Hermes ~ shopping for perfume in New York

Posted by Guest Shopper on 19 January 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Hermes on Madison AvenueThe Hermès flagship boutique on Madison Avenue is the epitome of a luxury boutique, with all the requisite elements: a doorman to greet you, a hushed ambience, a richly furnished interior, and an extremely well dressed clientele. The fragrance counter is stationed between shelves and cases displaying ties, briefcases, and leather-bound appointment books, and nearby spiral staircases lead to upper and lower levels, where customers are examining and — mirabile dictu! — even purchasing scarves and Birkin bags.

Once you are able to focus on the fragrances, you will notice that they are available in a complete range of concentrations, matching body products, and elegant presentation sets…

Space NK ~ shopping for perfume in New York

Posted by Guest Shopper on 5 January 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Space NK, SohoBeauty entrepreneur Nicky Kinnaird recently expanded her chain of Space NK Apothecary shops to the United States, including two locations in Manhattan. The jaded New York shopper might initially ask herself or himself whether this city really needs another venue for luxury toiletries; however, a visit to Space NK’s airy SoHo flagship boutique suggests that this company has found a niche of its own.

In addition to a small but smartly edited selection of fragrances and home fragrance, Space NK showcases high-quality, hard-to-find lines of skincare (Leaf & Rusher, Eve Lom, and Sheerino’Kho, plus many others), haircare (including Arrojo and Christophe Robin), and cosmetics (such as Lipstick Queen by Poppy King)…

Les Senteurs ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 21 December 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Les Senteurs perfumeryLes Senteurs is a tiny piece of big excitement on the edge of Belgravia — a specialist scent boutique run by an expert with a passion for perfume.

The thing that strikes you most as you come into Les Senteurs is how small a space it is. However, they’ve countered that by running the shelves up to the ceiling — this is a place where you need the services of an assistant with a stepladder!

Luckily, the assistants are invariably fantastic. This is a perfume shop where the staff don’t have to be sweet-talked into giving you samples…

Lafco New York ~ shopping for perfume in New York

Posted by Guest Shopper on 10 December 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Lafco New YorkWhen you pass through the wrought-iron gates that mark the entrance to Lafco New York, you may forget you’re just a stone’s throw from one of Manhattan’s busiest, and ever-changing, retail districts. The loft-like space of this softly lit shop, with its wood floors and cast-iron columns, is a throwback to traditional SoHo architecture; the products displayed there are often wonderfully Old World in nature.

Lafco (“Luxury Articles & Fragrance Company”) offers an enviable selection of home fragrance and body products, including Claus Porto soaps, beloved just as much for their Art Deco-inspired labels as for their scents; Linari’s luxurious oil diffusers; and Lafco’s own fragranced candles. A highlight of the perfume offerings is Lorenzo Villoresi’s line of meticulously crafted fragrances…

Fortnum & Mason ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 30 November 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Fortnum & Mason, London, exteriorSay the words ‘Fortnum & Mason’, and I defy you not to get a mental image of food hampers packed with foie gras. Fortnums has become pretty much synonymous with the provision of superior groceries since its founding at the beginning of the 18th Century. What’s less well known is that it sells lots of other luxury goods, including high-end perfumes.

From the outside, Fortnum & Mason is so fairy-taleish, with its pale blue portico and its musical clock, it looks more like something knocked up for a film set than a real store. I’d place it just below Liberty in the spontaneous giggle league…
