L’Artisan Parfumeur on Marylebone High Street ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 2 April 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

L'Artisan exterior, London

Long gone are the days when L’Artisan Parfumeur was a true niche brand. Nowadays, many department stores stock at least a couple of L’Artisan fragrances, and they’re even available on Amazon.

What you don’t often get to see, though, is the rest of the range — the candles, the scented ‘curiosities’, the home fragrances. For these, you usually need to find a proper L’Artisan boutique.

There are three of these in London, and the flagship store is in Marylebone High Street — slightly off the beaten track in perfume terms, but worth seeking out if you’re interested in more than the fragrances, or if you’re keen to sniff the Limited Editions…

Bergdorf Goodman ~ shopping for perfume in New York

Posted by Guest Shopper on 16 March 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Bergdorf Goodman exterior from Grand Army PlazaIf you stand at the southeast corner of Central Park, in the landmark Grand Army Plaza, you’ll see the Pulitzer Fountain set against a semi-circle of pear trees. The fountain’s sculpted centerpiece is Pomona, the goddess of abundance; serenely oblivious to the passing tourists and traffic, she rests an overflowing basket of fruit against her hip. Similar bounty awaits the fragrance-lover just beyond this graceful figure, through the doors of Bergdorf Goodman.

Bergdorf’s fragrances and cosmetics are located on the store’s lower level, one floor down from street level. The layout of the beauty level is slightly confusing, so it’s easiest and best to start in the “fragrance room” located near the center of the floor (see image below). There, you can sample numerous fragrance lines with the assistance of well-informed sales staff. Some of these lines are difficult to find elsewhere in their complete range…

Roja Dove’s Haute Parfumerie at Harrods ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 2 March 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Haute Parfumerie at Harrods, London

Roja Dove’s temple of scent is part of something called the ‘Urban Retreat’. The word ‘retreat’ is significant here, as the place is tucked away on the top floor of Harrods, and something of a challenge to find.

The trick is to choose the right set of escalators. Ignore the fancy Egyptian escalators in the heart of the building, and instead look for the smaller white-walled space between the Cosmetics Hall and Hans Crescent. Ride this all the way to the fifth floor, and you’ll find yourself just outside the Urban Retreat (lots of niche skincare brands). Go in, and there’s a doorway ahead of you on the right, which takes you into the Haute Parfumerie.

If you’ve ended up on the Egyptian escalators, you’ll arrive on the fifth floor amid lots of sporting goods. The signs will direct you to the right for the Urban Retreat. Ignore them, and head left instead, through the bistro bar. This will deposit you right outside the Haute Parfumerie…

New London Pharmacy ~ shopping for perfume in New York City

Posted by Guest Shopper on 21 February 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

New London PharmacyFollowing in the tradition of C. O. Bigelow, New London is a neighborhood pharmacy with a high-end twist: its well-stocked aisles mix basic drugstore remedies and mainstream beauty items with luxury toiletries gathered from locations around the world. Perfume lovers will also find a wide choice of merchandise, from popular favorites such as Thierry Mugler Angel and Marc Jacobs to more unusual lines like the New York-based SAN and Alan Cumming’s eponymous fragrance.

The only drawback to New London’s varied and colorful fragrance selection is its limited display space. Perfumes are densely packed on shelves below and behind the counter at the front of the store, where they share space with gum and candy and razor refills, and on the counter itself, where they surround the store’s main cash register…

Harrods ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 3 February 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

HarrodsJust after Christmas each year, an elegant commercial is shown on UK TV, which goes ‘There is only one sale. There is only one Harrods.’.

Well, if you had limited perfume-sniffin’ time in London, there is only one store to choose…and that’s Harrods.

I sometimes think of it as ‘Horrids’, not because it’s an unpleasant place — it isn’t by any means — but because it’s just so HUGE and so busy. There are four and a half large halls on the ground floor devoted to perfume and cosmetics…
