Parfums de Nicolai ~ shopping for perfume in London

Parfums de Nicolai boutique in LondonParfums de Nicolai boutique in London

If they ever had a contest for the smallest retail perfume space in the world, the Parfums de Nicolaï shop in London would surely be a hot contender.

Barely six feet by twenty, the shop is tucked into a corner on the plush end of Fulham Road. There’s no time for spacy minimalism here — every spare inch of the space is packed with goods. It’s like a treasure cave.

The main window display holds glass shelves of fancy perfume bottles, while the inside walls are crammed with personal fragrances, room sprays, candles, scented oils, soaps and toiletries and large bottles of lampe perfumeur liquid…

La Perla ~ shopping for perfume in New York City

Posted by Guest Shopper on 14 September 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

La Perla in SoHoThe SoHo outpost of La Perla, the Italian luxury lingerie company, couldn’t be more different from the raucous Victoria’s Secret located just two blocks away on Broadway. Its space is sunny and airy, decorated in shades of cream and white, and it feels private despite the large windows facing onto the cobble-stoned street. Sophisticated confections of satin and lace are meticulously displayed on the walls and in glass-topped cases; their price tags, as well as their delicate construction, may take your breath away.

Happily, the sales staff is also welcoming to visitors who are interested more in trying the store’s line of fragrances than in purchasing a very costly brassiere…

John Lewis ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 7 September 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

John Lewis in LondonThere are four big department stores on Oxford Street, all between Oxford Circus and Marble Arch. Of these, Selfridges is by far the biggest and best, but John Lewis — closest to Oxford Circus of the four — has a treat or two for perfumistas.

Along with all the standard department store fragrances, John Lewis has a little cache of niche surprises — at present Acqua di Parma, Annick Goutal, Banana Republic, Creed, Il Profumo, Juliette has a Gun, Maître Parfumeur et Gantier, Rance and The Different Company…

Georgia ~ shopping for perfume in New York City

Posted by Guest Shopper on 31 August 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Georgia boutique, interior

The new boutique called Georgia is located on a slightly gritty block of Houston Street, where the graffitied and security-gated facades of other local businesses stand as reminders of the neighborhood’s industrial past. Georgia’s interior has preserved some authentically distressed surfaces, but the goods for sale are far from grungy. In the front area of the shop, long shelves display scented bath and body products and a few fragrances, accompanied by an impressive variety of sisal cloths, sea sponges, and other bath-time indulgences. Baskets and smaller shelves hold good-smelling necessities like Smith’s Rosebud Salve and Herban Essentials essential oil towelettes.

The rear section of the boutique is dedicated to an in-store salon and a wall of haircare products…

Annick Goutal on Motcomb Street ~ perfume shopping in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 3 August 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Annick Goutal in London, Motcomb Street

The first Annick Goutal boutique in the UK has opened on Motcomb Street, a tucked-away retail enclave in glossy Knightsbridge.

Although it’s only ten minutes walk from Harvey Nichols, it’s a bit off the beaten track as far as the tourist trade is concerned. This makes for a quiet shopping experience, which can come as a relief after the bustle of the big Knightsbridge stores.

The boutique sells the full Goutal range, including toiletries, candles and the L’Orientalistes collection. Fragrances such as Sables, not always widely available, can be found here.

On the main floor, there’s a quiet space with seats and a hand-basin, so that you can test and remove the scents. Downstairs, there’s a lingerie room with a small jewellery range, and a display of fragrances in Baccarat bottles…
