La Nuit de Paco Rabanne ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 17 September 2012 62 Comments

La Nuit de Paco Rabanne

Some perfumes are a bare wisp that register more emotionally than physically. People around you sense something light about you but can’t quite connect it with perfume. Other fragrances are more insistent and complement your day like a pleasant soundtrack. Sure, people smell your perfume, but it’s a natural accompaniment to who you are.

And then there are the thugs like La Nuit de Paco Rabanne. La Nuit doesn’t waste time with seduction. It slips on brass knuckles and tells you and everyone else within noseshot how it’s going to be. And how it’s going to be is your trashiest 1980s nightmare come true. You just might love it…

Histoires de Parfums Edition Rare Ambrarem ~ fragrance review

Histoires de Parfums Edition Rare Ambrarem

Amber fragrances are the buttercream frosting of the perfume world. They’re easy to like and easy to get sick of. Nonetheless, it’s hard to imagine not having a little amber in your perfume collection to reach for when you’re cold and cranky and need the perfume equivalent of sweet comfort food.

The thing with amber fragrances, though, is that they’ve been done over and over. How do you make them new? When I saw the tome-shaped bottle for Histoires de Parfums Edition Rare Ambrarem, I wondered what the spin on amber would be this time. Citrus? Spice, maybe? No. I should have guessed: oud.

Histoires de Parfums nose Gérald Ghislain created Edition Rare Ambrarem, released in 2011. It includes top notes of pink peppercorn and elemi; heart notes of iris absolute and saffron; and base notes of castoreum absolute, Bourbon vanilla, sandalwood and amber.

Just after it’s sprayed on skin, Ambrarem’s amber-oud combination is cool and almost herbal…

Perfume Smell-Alikes

Coty Emeraude vintage advertGuerlain Shalimar vintage advert, are you her type

As new perfume releases fly by, I can’t help but remember the old saying, “There is nothing new under the sun.” While the monotony can be a drag, it has one big advantage: if you like a particular style of perfume, you might have lots of versions to chose from, at difference price points and availability.

This post is dedicated to calling out “smell-alikes” — that is, fragrances that aren’t dupes but smell similar enough to be siblings. They might give you ideas of fragrances to try, or they might provide a proxy for a rare perfume you can’t get your hands on. I hope you’ll add your own smell-alikes to the comments.

Frédéric Malle Carnal Flower/Coty Sand & Sable. Sure, there’s no comparing the quality between these two, and smelling them side by side would probably ruin Sand & Sable for me for good….

Vero Profumo Mito ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 27 August 2012 25 Comments

Tivoli, Villa d'Este

Until now, the Vero Profumo line had three fragrances: Onda, a mysterious herbal leather; Kiki, a fresh, bright lavender; and Rubj, a romantic, seductive orange blossom. Each perfume has a distinct personality, and each is different from the other. What would Vero Profumo’s logical next fragrance be? A green chypre, of course. In true Vero Profumo fashion, Mito Eau de Parfum is styled as a recognizable, but not entirely predictable, member of the family.

The fountains and statues in the garden of Italy’s Villa d’Este inspired Swiss perfumer Vero Kern to create Mito. Mito’s notes feature citrus, magnolia, jasmine, galbanum, hyacinth, cypress and moss. I’ve never been to Villa d’Este, and maybe I’ve fallen victim to the power of suggestion, but to me Mito does evoke a grassy garden smelled over a twist of fresh lemon peel and peppery bergamot. Shade dapples the velvet-fine lawn, and shrubs and trees dominate the garden’s alleys. Mito’s jasmine and magnolia don’t take center stage, but they soften the crisp galbanum without sweetening it…

Chanel Coco Noir ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 20 August 2012 179 Comments

Chanel Coco Noir

The word “noir” transforms nearly anything it modifies. For instance, think of “teddy bear.” Maybe you envision a beloved stuffed animal kissed by babies. Now imagine “teddy bear noir.” Suddenly that same toy lies abandoned in a sinister old farmhouse — maybe the house in Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood. Try it with different words: Disneyland. Disneyland Noir. Kitty. Kitty Noir. You see what I mean?

So, I had high expectations for Chanel Coco Noir. Chanel Coco is already sultry enough for Mata Hari. A noir version? Well, look at Caron Narcisse Noir. It’s loaded with menace and seduction. No way Chanel would let me down. Coco Noir would surely twist Coco’s spicy, woody heart into a real femme fatale.

Not. They should have called it Coco Pourpre…
