Mrs. Meyer’s Lavender Clean Day Room Freshener & Fabuloso Lavender Multi-Purpose Cleaner ~ home fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 4 March 2019 15 Comments

The thing about lavender-scented household products is that they rarely seem to smell like lavender. Which isn’t to say they don’t smell nice. This definitely holds true for Mrs. Meyer’s Lavender Clean Day Room Freshener and Fabuloso Lavender Multi-Purpose Cleaner.

Let’s start with the room freshener. In general, I’m not a fan of room sprays. I like a gently scented candle or an occasional baton of incense, and I burn a lot of Papiers d’Arménie near the litter box, but I like my home to feature me as its scented focal point.

However, I recently spent a week in a house in Palm Springs with a spray bottle of Mrs. Meyer’s Lavender Clean Day Room Freshener on the bathroom counter…

Pont des Arts A Ce Soir & A Chaque Instant ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Angela on 4 February 2019 32 Comments

There’s new perfume house in town: Pont des Arts. Some of you might be groaning, and I don’t blame you. It’s hard enough to keep up with promising releases from houses we already know and love. Stop it with the new brands already!

That said, Pont des Arts bears watching. Its first offering is a manageable three fragrances including an oriental, a floral chypre and a fresh woody citrus. Even more intriguing, perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour developed the oriental, À Ce Soir, and the floral chypre, À Chaque Instant…

5 Perfumes for Palm Springs

Posted by Angela on 21 January 2019 37 Comments

February in my home town is dark and rainy. Smart Portlanders book flights for Mexico and other parts south. My budget usually keeps me home with stacks of novels and something braising in the oven, but this year I’m going to spend a week at a friend’s house in Palm Springs. I’ve never been there, and my brain is loaded with visions of the desert, palm trees, old steakhouses, and, hopefully, a good thrift shop or two.

I’ll be traveling with a modest carry-on suitcase, so I’ll probably take only a decant of a good all-purpose vintage fragrance with a warm-day, cool-night feel, like Rochas Audace. But if I were to pack a steamer trunk, here are five perfumes I’d include…

Carner Barcelona Sweet William ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 7 January 2019 68 Comments

Hey, carnation lovers. You know who you are. You dream of Caron Poivre Extrait and hoard old bottles of Bellodgia. You lard your linen closet with discs of Roger & Gallet Carnation soap and mourn their discontinued Blue Carnation. You plant red dianthus up your walkway. You put extra clove in your molasses cookies.

I have news. First, I hear on good authority that carnations are making a comeback among chic florists. I’m not talking about fat, stiff grocery store carnations dyed Easter egg colors. I mean real carnations, the little ones pungent with spice…

Angela’s Fragrance Highlights of 2018

Posted by Angela on 24 December 2018 44 Comments

This year, 2018, marks my twelfth year writing about perfume. I’ve passed a period where I bought a bottle of fragrance a month, and I no longer need to study my way through the classics to understand fragrance benchmarks. I’ve given up on trying to sniff most new releases, and I only bought two new bottles of perfume this year. But I still wear perfume every day. In other words, by now I’m living with fragrance the way I’ll probably live with it the rest of my life.

Now that I’ve lowered your expectations, here are my perfume highlights for the year…
