Perfume and the In Between Season

Posted by Angela on 21 February 2008 83 Comments

T.S. Eliot might have written that “April is the cruelest month“, but if he'd lived where I do he'd have sacrificed the artful rhythm of his line to write “February” instead. By now, I've had my fill of cold, rainy days. Mean old February seems cannily aware of how I feel and lures me into a false hope of spring by easing a few daphne buds into bloom and the odd robin and scrub jay into the yard. Still, the lilacs are weeks from blooming. It isn't really winter any more, but it certainly isn't spring. What kind of perfume suits the “in between” season?

For me, the in between season is a great opportunity to try something new or to revisit scents I haven't worn for a long time. I'm ready to put away Caron Tabac Blond and Guerlain Mitsouko for a day or two…

Aedes de Venustas + Molinard Histoire de Chypre ~ perfume review

Posted by Angela on 12 February 2008 51 Comments

Aedes + Molinard Histoire de Chypre fragranceSometimes the designation of a perfume as a “chypre” can feel mysterious. Guerlain Mitsouko, Carven Ma Griffe, and Paloma Picasso Mon Parfum are all chypres, for instance, but each smells so different. If you are stumped as to how a chypre really smells and need an olfactory benchmark — and a gorgeous one, at that — try Aedes de Venustas Histoire de Chypre.

“Chypre” is French for Cyprus and was linked with perfume in 1917 when Coty released a fragrance called Chypre. Coty Chypre was one of the first scents to move away from replicating something recognizable, like the smell of citrus or flowers…

How to Sell Perfume

Posted by Angela on 6 February 2008 93 Comments

Juicy Couture Smell Me perfume adA lot has been made lately about how perfume sales have slowed despite the record number of new perfume releases and the millions of dollars spent marketing them. What has gone wrong? I have a few ideas about the reasons for lagging perfume sales and how to boost them. Perfume lovers, I welcome your input. Perfume flacks, pay attention.

First, let's go to the root of the problem. Good perfume, like good wine, isn't easy to love. To appreciate scent a person needs to spend time — sometimes years — smelling different scents and learning to appreciate them. Remember the first time you tried an olive or Taleggio cheese or champagne? You probably didn't like it…

Christian Dior Dioressence, vintage & new ~ perfume review

Posted by Angela on 30 January 2008 46 Comments

Dioressence fragrance by Christian Dior

Although it took me a while to appreciate some of the classic Christian Diors, as I've become more experienced with perfume I've come to love them more and more. For instance, the first time I tried Miss Dior and Diorella, I wasn't sure about them. They were intriguing, but I wasn't ready for them yet. Dioressence, on the other hand, I loved at first sniff. What I didn't know was that my first sniff was of the vintage Dioressence.

Dior's website describes Dioressence as a “spicy oriental” and lists its top notes as aldehydes, greens and fruit; its heart as jasmine, geranium, cinnamon, carnation, orris, ylang ylang and tuberose; and its base as patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver, vanilla and musk…

Perfumista Tip: How to Buy Vintage Perfume

Posted by Angela on 23 January 2008 39 Comments

Nina Ricci Bigarade perfume

For me, vintage perfume is both a dream and a nightmare. On one hand, smelling a scent that isn’t made any more feels gloriously forbidden, like tricking time. The old packaging can be gorgeous, too. On the other hand, vintage fragrances can be hard to find, expensive if you do find them, and heartbreaking when they run out. No one said love was easy.

Fortunately, if you know where to look, vintage perfume is out there and for a decent — sometimes ridiculously low — price. Here’s what I’ve learned so far about finding vintage perfume. If you have any tips to share, please comment…
