AI isn’t coming to fragrance — it’s already here

Posted by Robin on 24 June 2025 Leave a Comment

AI isn’t coming to fragrance — it’s already here, and in most things that the average consumer smells. The four fragrance conglomerates responsible for most of what the world smells — DSM-Firmenich, Givaudan, IFF, and Symrise — all integrate AI into their pipelines. Givaudan’s Carto system helps perfumers refine formulas. DSM-Firmenich’s EmotiON claims to produce scents that improve well-being. These systems are used not just in product labs but in fragrance education worldwide.

Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ four questions for mid-June 2025

Posted by Robin on 21 June 2025 199 Comments

This is a repeat of half-year poll we’ve done for the past few years. As always, answer as many or as few of the questions as you like, or just talk about something else.

1. What’s the best new scented thing you discovered in the first half of 2025? It can be anything, from a flower to a fragrance to a body product.

3. Now that the year is about half over, what do you think is the best new fragrance release of 2025 so far?

4. Share something wonderful with us! It can be anything — good news you received recently, something delicious you ate, the latest TV series you binged — really, anything…

Friday scent of the day 6/20

Posted by Robin on 20 June 2025 233 Comments

Happy Friday and happy Summer Solstice! It’s also World Refugee Day and National Ice Cream Soda Day. Our community project for today: celebrate Brian Wilson’s birthday (and the summer solstice) by scenting a Beach Boys song, or honor Brian Wilson with your fragrance in any other way you see fit.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

If you asked me to name my top 20 recording artists, The Beach Boys would not make the cut. I like their music well enough but they get only a tiny fraction of my listening time. That said, I do think Brian Wilson crafted at least two, maybe three, of what I’d call the Top 10 Perfect Pop songs, and without hesitation I’d put God Only Knows at spot #1 (and I’m not alone). Carl Wilson sings lead, but it’s Brian Wilson’s genius as a writer, producer and arranger that makes the song “one of the most complex—and beautiful—songs in the annals of American popular music”. The only thing I could think of to match it (that I was willing to wear on a hot June Day) was Diorissimo…

I feel like I’m sleeping at home

Posted by Robin on 20 June 2025 6 Comments

I like to put fragrance on the seat. Usually I wear perfume to bed, and I perfume [it]. Because I spend so much time in hotels, there’s nothing really grounding me. So I’ll get a perfume that I use that’s only for my bed and on the airplane seats, and I feel like I’m sleeping at home.
