Thursday scent of the day 12/18

Posted by Robin on 18 December 2025 91 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also World Arabic Language Day and International Migrants Day. Birthdays: Paul Klee, Fletcher Henderson, Ossie Davis, Jacques Pépin. What fragrance are you wearing?

For the song Sous le ciel de Paris, I went with the obvious: vintage Yves Saint Laurent Paris.

Reminder: 12/19 is Édith Piaf's birthday. Scent an Édith Piaf song, or honor Édith Piaf with your fragrance in any other way you see fit.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows  Édith Piaf and Yves Montand in a still from the 1946 movie Étoile sans lumière. Montand on Piaf:

''We lived together for two years,'' Mr. Montand recalled.''But we had only one year of love life. She was exceptional when she sang but in life she could be bitchy and she could be captivating. One was never bored.'' Legend has it that she left Mr. Montand because she was jealous of his success, which she had aided. ''All the men she loved she left,'' Mr. Montand declared. ''She was never left. For me, it was one of the most beautiful years of my life and I was terribly hurt.''

Bonus listen: Édith Piaf singing Sous le ciel de Paris, followed by the Yves Montand version.

Yeah, I thought of YSL Paris immediately when I was trying to match something with “Sous le ciel de Paris” yesterday. If I still had the scent, I definitely would’ve worn it yesterday. Great pairing, Robin!

As for today, I’ve been thinking about what would pair well with “Non, je ne regrette rien”, and I eventually went with ELDO Jasmin et Cigarette. The cigarette/ash accord symbolizes the past – “swept away”, “With my memories I lit the fire” – while the jasmine feels like the new love and fresh start she is singing about – “For my life, for my joys… It starts with you today”. The cigarette note also nods to Piaf’s world – cabaret lights, late nights, smoke-filled rooms.

I can’t hear Hymne à l’amour without shedding a tear. Piaf wrote it for Marcel Cerdan, the great love of her life—and only weeks later, he died in a plane crash on his way to see her. When she recorded it after his death, the song became her grief..
In La Vie en Rose, Marion Cotillard’s portrayal of the moment Édith Piaf learns of Marcel Cerdan’s death. Supposedly it was shot in a single 4 min take.

SOTD is something by Chanel but I don’t know what to fit this beautiful song yet…

Woke up a little later than normal today. Took care of finances while still in no 22 edt. I despise paying bills but they have to be done. After my shower, I will be getting some groceries at a little higher end grocery store since my normal grocery store doesn’t sell marrow soup bones. Just getting 5 things. And I am going to wear no 5 edt while doing it.

          Huh, interesting.

I think it is a kind of stress for me to do anything with money other than spend it. I check every month that my mother has paid all HER bills, and even doing that (not my money!) is mildly (very mildly, but still) unpleasant even though it takes me no more than 10 minutes.

Lovely NST-ers positively rained extra samples and decants on me in and around the last Swap and Split Meets! Testing and claiming CP points in Byredo Vanille Antique for a thought it gave me of a smoky bakery in France. I just spritzed so I will have to see how it develops. Trying to finish Christmas cards today. Will try to catch up on comments this evening. 🎄📥. Thanks for the great song links, Robin! I enjoyed both but I thought M. Piaf’s “mmm” chorus was way better.

I would have been a teenager when Grace Jones came out with her cover of La Vie en Rose and it was played everywhere. This Top of the Pops clip features a campy stage set- some of the objects look like vacuum cleaners covered in silver paint. She’s fabulous, too. I’m not really matching too well as I fancy wearing A La Nuit rather than a rose scent, though the night time vibes might drag it past the line.

Wearing my decant of YSL Parisienne–given to me by Koyel –I miss seeing her here. It’s rose, violet and peony, for a sophisticated cosmetics scent, and then that dash of vinyl that just keeps it slightly off kilter which fits Piaf well IMO.

I’m claiming points in Vol de Nuit parfum, as I can imagine either Edith or Yves wearing it well. I hadn’t realized that she wrote the lyrics to many of her signature songs. I also didn’t know that she and Montand were in love at one point — I absolutely can believe it would have been a stormy relationship that was never boring!

I’m in Musc Ravageur. Really pretty in the cold air. I was looking at the Holts site, and then the FM site, and realized some items are disappearing. Have to admit I splurges and bought the matching body butter-if it’s leaving the line up I want to experience it before it’s all gone. Bought it at CCO-I’m not rich 🙂

Wearing Turmeric Latte by Lush, which annieperfumes introduced me to, thank you Annie, I hope you are well. So unusual and interesting, sometimes I really crave it.
I doubt that Edith Piaf drank any turmeric drinks, but she might have sipped lattes at a zinc-topped bar in Paris…though a triple espresso might have been more her style.
I realize that many of the fragrances I’ve worn this week came from NSTers. I share the sentiments of SheriG about the generosity here.

It’s been a busy week for me and haven’t had a chance to think about Edith Piaf but hope to catch up on all the cool info Robin has posted and the cp tomorrow.

An ugly and bizarre weather day today. It was 50 degrees this morning, but cloudy, dark and dreary with strong gusty winds, and then the rain started and should be ending soon. (The only good thing is the frozen piles of snow are finally melting,). Later today winds will shift and temps will plummet to 15 degrees, freezing everything wet since all the salt will have been washed away from roads and sidewalks. Temps will only get up to mid-20’s tomorrow, so nothing will melt. Oy!

Glad I’m home today catching up on chores. SOTD is an old YR December favorite of mine, the original Fleur de Noel, from 2008. Based on the hellebore flower – sometimes called the Christmas rose – its pretty pinkness is touched with a scent of sweet almonds and warmed with tonka bean and musk. A bit gourmand, a bit floral – nice!

    Sending 🌸🌸🌸to all!

I have an idea for the CP tomorrow, but the scent I have initially picked out is kind of weather dependent. We shall see if Colorado’s volatile weather cooperates or not.

No wind today, thank God. There was a bit of rain late last night as the front pushed on thru. Just enough to get the streets and sidewalks wet for a while. But things dried out quickly. And tomorrow it might get up to 70. See what I mean by volatile? 🤣☠️

SOTD = returned to the EdP version of Hypnotic Poison. My dabber samples of both the EDT and EDP are getting low.

SOTD is Shalimar L’Essence. Finally pulled the trigger with Sephora’s 20% off sale and decided to have a little Merry Christmas to me! Glad I did. I was afraid it would be too sweet, but it’s perfect.

Will mentally wear L’Air de Rien tomorrow for Rien de Rien. It’s not really office-friendly when getting up close to patients. Maybe I’ll put it on after work tomorrow or wear it Saturday.

You probably would “regrette” wearing L’Air de Rien to work😬
