Happy Friday and happy Repeal Day! And a very happy 90th birthday to Calvin Trillin. For today's community project, we're celebrating World Soil Day. Wear something earthy, or something that reminds you of plants growing, or do something else creative with the theme.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I went with the obvious: CB I Hate Perfume M#2 Black March.
Reminder: on 12/12, tell us about a personal hobby or interest or any activity you do frequently, other than perfume, and match it to a fragrance. Suggested by Kanuka.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I also went with the obvious, the soiliest thing I know, Yves Rocher Nature Millénaire Homme. Demeter Dirt smelled kind of dirt-ish in a not entirely pleasant way: this smells gorgeously like fallen leaves and damp soil and wood smoke, everything autumnal. It’s been my fall/winter go-to for years and years.
I need to get new minis of Demeter Dirt and Old Book…
One day I will find a mini of this to try. You have really sold this over several posts, pyramus. I finally got to try the women’s version and liked it a lot and would recommend it! What a shame that both are d/c.
It wasn’t on the market for very long, and I don’t know if they ever manufactured minis. (There were minis of the women’s version for a little while.) Full-sized bottles show up every now and then for hundreds of dollars. It really is a shame: in their heyday, YR made some top-flight fragrances, as good as anything the more famous houses were producing.
You’re so right! I absolutely love the women’s version. Luckily I have 2 minis and 2 bottles. Like you, I love it in the fall – even its bronze leaf bottle says ‘fall’ – yet it was marketed as a summer scent. (I have the original ad from back in the day.)
I am wearing L’Artisan Patchouli Patch for the CP.
Happy Friday! 🌻
I love that scent, pl67-excellent choice for soil.
Thank you, Carole! It is indeed a great scent.
Happy Friday, pl67. Patchouli Patch is so fabulous, you chose well!
Thank you, Tulipani! 🌻
Oh, that’s a great one PL67!
It is!
Do you get a black licorice note from Patchouli Patch?
The licorice is very subtle and it dissappears very quickly, at least on my skin.
So I am not imagining it! Thanks!
I’m in Gardener’s Glove, from St. Clair: the smell of leather gardening gloves after pulling up weeds, picking lemons from a tree, planting tomato vines, training jasmine on a trellis, and cutting roses for a bouquet.
Sounds like a great perfume
Her fragrances are so complex and evocative. You smell good!
I am sure it is better than Demeter Pruning Shears, but I did like Demeter Pruning Shears!
You smell great!
I love Diane St. Clair.
Post shower a few drops of Pharoahs Passion as I only have a bit left and there is no more to be had anywhere.
Oh, yes, that one (PP) was gorgeous.
Lovely! We are twins!
Wow! We smell great!😊
We were almost twins, Robin, but then it’s pouring rain, has been for a week and will for the next week, and I just couldn’t do a spring soil scent. Except that we’re related, because then I decided to layer Demeter Dirt with La Curie Ossuary to get past the rain thing.
Ossuary is such a wonderful rooty iris and perfect with your Dirt combo.
Perfect!
We are having snow flurries here, which I guess is better than rain…
Collecting points in Goutal Ninfeo Mio-humid garden soil sensation—like standing under a fig tree after watering the garden. Fig tree, roots, moss, stones…earth
Slow cooking turkey chili for tonights dinner.
LTSG – I just emailed you some nut-free holiday cookie recipes! ♥
I am reading them right now!
Also having a LOT of coffee today as I stayed up pass midnight reading…
I am still on my 80’s perfume kick because of this book but taking a break today
I love all things Goutal-nice choice for today’s CP:)
Ooooh, another great one, Lovestosmellgood. You smell wonderful.
Your chili sounds great!
Following allo’s lead from earlier in the week for CP points: Roberto Greco Rauque for this incredibly wonderful earthy leathery mushroom concoction that also has notes of myrrh and pine tar. It’s really a unique and beautiful fragrance. And, it’s wearable!
Always a bonus! I have found myself moving away from acquiring Interesting Scents, as I am in favour of wearability.
This one is both interesting and wearable! You’re right, sometimes you don’t get both in one fragrance.
Lush Tramp Body Spray. Oakmoss and patchouli – smell of damp moss and wet earth.
That sounds good. I hope your electricity/power stays on all weekend so you can just relax and keep warm, and eat hot food.
Thanks! We have not got an outage yesterday and today, and I hope it will last. We have a gas stove, so at least we can use it for hot food (the oven and microwave are of course unusable without power). We even have a charging station for heating – but it depends how long the outage lasts. Hoping for a warm winter and fewer attacks.
I am hoping with you, Glannys.
me three Glannys.
I’m also hoping for the best for you, I think of you often when I see news from Ukraine.
Very pleased to hear that you have had a couple days of uninterrupted power. I wish that outages were a rare exception for you all. Thinking a lot about Ukraine this season.
If I’d still had any Black March, I would definitely have gone with that today. As it is, I nearly chose OJ Woman, but the hand went straight to Balenciaga Le Dix for all the flowers. It’s bucketing rain here and I’m still sick (and therefore exiled from my favorite coffee-drinking chair), so my subconscious evidently decided I needed a little springtime.
Is it the new Le Dix or the vintage? I am contemplating buying the 2x10ml set just for it but a new article on Fragrantica is not exactly positive. Would love your thought please.
It’s vintage, the original edt according to STC’s label. I haven’t tried the reissue so can’t help there.
If the article is to be trusted, we aren’t missing out and also that you smell fabulous!
Are you getting at least a little better?
Sadly, not really. I seem to have plateaued with sinus issues and headache, but really no other symptoms other than positive tests and total boredom. 🙂
Nuts.
So sorry SheriG! Hope you improve over the weekend.
Hello and tgif!
I am wearing pretty much the literal soil in Zoologist King Cobra. Hyperrealistic soil, cold, damp and filthy goodness. Spray on any more, I’ll start growing mushrooms.
I imagine that Zoologist would do a good Mole perfume – but King Cobra sounds great
hahaha very evocative happy888cat.
ZOMG, that mushroom comment! 😂😂
I am not CP compliant-I’m in Mona di Orio’s Musc. Another snowstorm and I had to drive through it, so I needed the protection of the angels. Neroli is the scent of angels so I’m in Musc. Dreading drive home in another 4 hours.
Stay safe carole.
I love Neroli
Hope that you are home safe and sound! And warm!
To comply with the CP, I am in the earthy VC&A Bois d’Iris.
I have to smell more VC&A
Yes, you do. VC&A is worth checking out.
What else is good by them? I don’t believe have tried anything else.
If Rose Velours is still around, that one was quite pretty. Been a long time since I have seen VC&A bottles in person, but that’s due to my location.
IIRC, I had a sample of their Orchidee Vanille and it was almost painfully sweet to my nose. And I have several gourmand perfumes.
Bois Dore
Thank you ladies!
Long time no post, and it feels great to be back. NST was always my always my happy place, and I am so glad everyone is still here.
In Chanel Sycomore today, for CP. I’ve always thought that there was something like damp soil in it, but in the nicest way. And because it’s Chanel, it’s sparkly and beautiful too.
Welcome back!
Hello, gvillecreative! I too am in Coromandel – but over a base of Nombril Immense. It feels heretical, especially with a Chanel, but the big bellybutton seems to ground the former.
Nice to see you, and of course you smell fabulous😊
Hello! Sycomore is wonderful. Welcome back.
Vetiver is definitely earthy! I meant to wear something with vetiver this week, but eventually went with patchouli.
Welcome back! You smell fantastic today.
Great to see you back!
*waves hello*
My plan was to wear something with a beetroot note for CP, probably Diptyque Kyoto. But it’s very chilly this morning so I wanted something warming and chose Shalimar Millesime Tonka. It’s making me think of Deva, I remember her really liking this one.
It’s a miserablly chilly, rainy day, so went with warmth too.
I really should have pulled out my Demeter Beetroot this week! Assuming I still have any.
It’s hot and blustery and I have a long drive home today (5 hours – which isn’t long by USA standards, probably a work commute) . I’ll be wearing Chypre Mousse later. For anyone wanting a beautiful, quiet and immersive movie I recommend Train Dreams (Joel Edgerton in main role) on Netflix. It’s terrific.
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2025/nov/06/train-dreams-reviewjoel-edgerton-denis-johnson
Thanks for the recommendation- that looks really good!
I’ve been reading very positive reviews of that movie.
5 hours seems long to me! Hope you are well rested by now.
Happy Friday!
Wearing Fischersund 101 because its grassy, coniferous vibe is an homage to the soil that gives it life💚
Wonderful choice! Happy Friday!
Happy Friday back atcha!
Totally not CP compliant today in SL Santal Blanc, re-applied from last night, because I love it so. My fave of the Lutens santal trifecta.
That was a good one, and I have not worn it in eons.
I am triplets in Black March today. I love this scent so much, it embodies creative perfumery to me.
It is bucketing down rain here, but too warm in the mountains to be snow so ski season is still delayed. Plus I have a leak in the roof over the garage. It’s the second one this year so I see a re-roof in my future some time this summer.
Oh dear, that sounds like $$$.
Are you feeling better? I hope so.
I am feeling better, still have a headache but otherwise okay. The roof should be 10K-15K, although one bozo thought he might scam the nice old lady and quoted 30-40K.
Oh no. Another roof leak? That sucks.
Ugh on the roof, but don’t we smell great?
I wore Papillon Perfumes Dryad last night, it is amazing for the first hour or so, but I’m not so keen on the drydown. Costus tends to dominate and costus smells to me like dirty hair.
I bought a FB because I like the start so much, and I wear it every now and then at home when I can change my clothes if the costus is too much. This time, though, it’s still smelling OK on my clothes this morning. Maybe my reaction to costus has changed or the bottle has aged a bit 🙂 .
PS, I forgot about today! I’ll be wearing Andrea Maack’s Coven this morning.
Dirty hair!
Then again someone once told me I Love Carottes smelled like dirty hair, and I thought wow, I wish my hair smelled that good when it was dirty 🙂
Compliant in PdN Iris Medicis. It was a bit overwhelming when I first tried it in the spring/summer–much better as a winter scent.
I need to try that one! Do you love it now?
It’s a pretty nice iris. A kind perfume friend passed it along to me, and I have just spritzed it.
I’m house twins with HappyCat in Zoologist. I couldn’t make up my mind so I’ve got a double-barrel (or double-wrist) of “stinky” stuff on me, or I hope, earthy stuff: Bat on left hand and Civet on right hand, both the originals. I am sure there’s some other animals in their collection that might be “earthy” or slinky or whatever, but these came to my mind. Trying them now, I have to say that I find Civet a lot more interesting. Bat is VERY fruity, at least at first (I’ve only now sprayed them on). Civet is much stranger and it seems more multidimensional with spices, animal notes, some oak moss, grassy, and floral–all rolled into one. It’s fascinating. I have not worn either of these for a long time–I keep all of their scents in a box together and don’t often get them out.
But what I was WANTING to wear was what I considered a great idea for the CP–CDG Gold. I’m sure I have a bottle of it and for the life of me I can’t find it. I suspect any of the more “elemental” of their scents would be good for today, including Copper and (maybe) Cement, or even the inky one. Metals are of the earth, right?
I’m venturing out to one shop and maybe one art gallery today as my first effort at Christmas shopping. I have very few people to buy things for and know their tastes. For some of my other friends I will buy some nice soaps and/or send a famous Houston Goode Company pecan pie, packed in a big wooden box. It’s ridiculously expensive, but it is SO good and kind of distinctive–once I’ve sent it to someone they always want it again! I’m a bit locked in. Mom always made my aunt and uncle (her in-laws) a pecan pie for Christmas. I’m no baker, so this is my way of taking on the tradition. Works for us!
Aha, I need a nice gift to send someone and that pecan pie looks perfect! I might steal your idea.
Hope you find your Gold! A lay down bottle seems harder to lose, somehow, but maybe it’s easier to lose.
SOTD = St. Clair Scents Gardener’s Glove
Green leather, on theme with the CP. I should wear this more often although I am down to the dregs … and no BUB!
I went back to the Japanese restaurant and 😋 on the bara chirashi. I decided to see what it would cost without ordering any extras and the total came out to $32. Not bad for a nice lunch meal and this also means I am okay with going there at least once a month!
Tomorrow I am meeting up with friends for dinner in New Brunswick!
Is Gardener’s Glove still around for you to get a BUB? Or was it LE?
Enjoy that dinner out with friends tomorrow! Hope your weather cooperates.
I’ve never looked but judging by my last quarter “ferfume” (as my nieces used to call it) spending, I should not even think about it.
Looking forward to the dinner…looks like it’s warm enough to melt the dusting of snow!
Enjoy your dinner!
Thank you, lillyjo!
I did a fragantica search of earth notes and nope, I didn’t have any of the perfumes listed.
Instead I’m doing a Shalimar-off with the new one on one wrist and MVP on the other. Boy, they are verrrry close. At least to my untrained nose.
Well perfume friends- I did it! Submitted my final paper of the semester this morning, one semester of grad school in the books. It was a long one. Remind me again why I’m doing this lol, no, it’s all good. I am actually really loving using my brain again and looking at research. Paper writing does get to be a bit of a brain marathon for me though. The class was healthcare policy and politics and ended up being so much more interesting than I thought it would be! which was good. Now I’m off til January 20. I was telling my daughter last night I think I’ll have some time now to read some “real” books. Maybe some Jane Austen. We recently watched Miss Austen on PBS and if you haven’t seen it, I would highly recommend. I love Keeley Hawes, and the story itself was quite interesting. Be forewarned though, grab some tissues for the last episode.
Congrats on your final paper of your first grad school semester! You can do it – and your brain is lovin’ it!👍
Thanks Laila!😁
Great news madtowngirl! Enjoy your well-deserved break from academia.
Thanks Jalapeño! I will! 🙂
Congratulations! I think it’s awesome that you are doing this.
Also… quit sending me your cold and snow! Lol. I thought we were friends! 😀🤘
Thanks lillyjo!
lol, sorry! yeah, winter really snuck up on us didn’t it? One Sunday we had 55 degrees, the next we were buried under a foot of snow!
Another very cold day with temps in the teens this morning. My heart aches for all the birds and little creatures outside my window; we feed them all but there are swarms of them and they look so cold.🥶
It’s difficult to think of ‘earthy’ or ‘plants growing’ when the world outside is a frozen tundra, so I chose Dame’s Earth Mother for today’s cp, a late winter/early spring favorite of mine when I know She’s beginning a new life cycle I cannot yet see deep beneath. Earth Mother’s warm, nurturing embrace contains garden notes of sage, jasmine, LOTV, and galbanum with patchouli at the bottom I always associate with the soil.❤️
Home most of the day decorating but looking forward to seeing my favorite cellist tonight as he begins another tour upon the release of his newest album.
Sending you a Lullaby for ☮️ on Mother Earth.🎶

Lovely video, Laila.
I’m wearing SL La Fille de Berlin. It’s a beautiful understated rose (to me). Yesterday I was in my carrot seed oil mixture. I’m loving these grounding, earthy scents this week. Great CP!
This is the perfect time of year for grounding and calming perfumes!
I like to think of myself as the queen of green perfumes, all natural frags, and the earthier, the better. I went with something easy, Aftelier Cepes et Tuberose. It’s earthy and teaming with plant life.
I thought of that one but don’t have any left…glad to see it represented!
Today’s picture looks delicate and quite pretty. Not something I associate with mushrooms. Usually ‘delicious’ comes to mind instead. 🍄🍄🍄
Lots of melting and evaporation going on here. But the mountains are getting another round of snow starting tomorrow and going thru the weekend. Should make both the ski resorts and the hydrologists happy.
SOTD = Reminiscence Patchouli EdT. It’s biggest, baddest patch fragrance that I have, and is for serious patchouli aficionados only. Pairs quite nicely with Bum Bum Cream. But I think I like yesterday’s combo more.
It seems like people have been layering with Bum Bum cream with so many different perfumes. Does it sweeten up the perfume?
Technically I don’t think I am layering with the Bum Bum Cream, since it is nowhere near the perfume. It’s on my shins, while I am currently wearing perfume on the underside of my arms. I haven’t noticed any difference in how my perfumes smell.
However, my laundry hamper is a different thing entirely!
I actually may have Reminiscence Patchouli although maybe I am mistaking it for the vanilla!
The far drydown of the Rem Patchouli was so, so good this morning.
I know Aurora has a few of the Rem scents, too.
I went with patchouli and wore Zara Fleur de Patchouli for work today. Tonight I am wearing Jimmy Choo edp with matching lotion.
I might be back in Jimmy Choo tomorrow. I still need to compare it against Angel Comet one of these days.
Hello, everyone. Very often I read articles here without posting. This morning I definitely felt like sharing something from me.
Since collecting perfumes for the last 25+ years since a very young teen – I have come to my “perfume career” conclusion. I have decided that only one perfume house is what I want/need. Chanel. In the last less than 3 months I have gathered an impressive collection already.
When reading this article this beautiful morning – I was already wearing something that fits the bill: Chanel Sycomore pre-2016 EdT. I can’t even get into details how gorgeous it is – I can sing praises about it all day long. I also have the current EdP on the way and I hope it delivers something really nice. I watched a video and someone said that the new EdP bottles released AFTER 2022 are back to being “good” juice.
At home I have a vintage bottle of Bois des Iles waiting for me to try (we are visiting relatives today). Can’t wait to try it!!
Funny fact about my perfume hobby is that now that I have decided to collect Chanel only I still have my massive collection of everything else I got through the years. Sometimes I come across something I forgot I even have: like a bottle of Orris Wakan I bought and never even used!! Or Musc Pallida, also unused. Each one costs like $500!! When across each thing ik like: “I spent $500 and never even used it… I really am crazy about perfume”.
Nice to see you! I hope you will try those fragrances in your collection that you haven’t tried yet. Maybe you’ll find a new love.
Thank You. Frankly I love all and every Chanel fragrance I have collected so far. Wow now I have a true, huge rotation. The ones I reach most for: Chanel 22, Sycomore, 5 L’Eau. I do adore Bois des Iles and it smells EXACTLY as I had imagined it. Same happened with 5 L’Eau – it ended up smelling the same exact as I had thought it would. I guess that’s the 25+ years of “perfumista” career.
