Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ whispering to Santa (or the gift-giving entity of your choice), 2025 edition

Posted by Robin on 29 November 2025 170 Comments

Our eighteenth annual holiday gift poll. Here are the three questions:

What is the fragrance-related gift you’d most like to receive this year?

Let’s say you were going to ask for just one unsniffed fragrance this year, what would it be?

Are you giving any fragrance items for gifts this year, and if so, what?

Or, as always, just talk about something else.

Late as always (I lied when I said I would get it done by the end of the day Friday) but I have updated the Friday Community Projects list.

SOTD = Frederic Malle Iris Poudre

Love! This is one where all parts are excellent AND I also want someone to just create a whole new perfume where it’s the dry down from top to bottom! 🤍🤍🤍

My iPad is not updating because I refused to purchase extra cloud storage for $2.99 per month! I went ahead and deleted photos and apps but it is still telling me that it cannot be updated because my iPad is full! It’s possible I may be stuck unless someone here can give me pointers on how to fully delete without having to reset it. Anyone?

We now have to think about a possible venue change for linner on the 28th. Originally, we were going to time it (for the 27th) so my sister who lives in PA can share a meal but since the date changed, she couldn’t make it. Then we thought the 28th would work and set time for 12:30PM but then heard that 11:30 is probably better so we changed it to accommodate. With the discussion on Thanksgiving, we may change it yet again to early dinner at a diner which is right next door. I am going there for dinner later today so we’ll see what’s what.

As to the poll, my answers are none, none and no 🤣.

You emptied the trash, too, right?

I would take it to an Apple store and work through with a Genius, ideally in the morning or nearer closing when there are fewer people.

      Good luck!

I had the same problem. I can’t update because of lack of storage etc. I can’t store on iCloud because I don’t have enough data to install. And then continual messages about my iPad being full. I borrow a look of books/ newspaper subs on various sites (often library) and although things were returned they were still in the system. I think this has something to do with the cache. By uninstalling apps these apps I got back about 15GB. I then re-installed them. I see you’ve deleted apps but maybe have a look if there’s any where you ‘borrow’ things and single them out. In other words, check that you’ve cleared the cache

Wearing Kyoto again for my last day before vacation. I would love to get either Epic 56 or Rose de Nuit for Christmas but unless I find someone with serious money or I come into money, it’s not happening. It’s the end of November, so the timing is right for me to start seriously thinking about Christmas – I’ve been trying not to see the shops full of Christmas things for the last few months!
A gift for me – I’ll ask for that to be delayed till April, I’m planning a trip (two weeks in Paris and Rome), and there will be any number of perfumes that Santa could give me!
Unsniffed – I used to say that I never wanted to get a FB of any perfume I hadn’t tried, but that’s no longer true, I’m getting more reckless as I age. I might ask Santa from something from Godet. I saw their shop in St Paul de Vence earlier this year, but didn’t have time to go in, and I’m still haunted by the lost opportunity!
Gifts for others – it’s my usual of looking for some nice soaps for my mother. My mother’s cousin loves perfume, so I’ll give her a couple of travel sprays of things from my collection. It’s an easy gift – when she doesn’t like something, I take it back and send her something else.

Hello, all. The grandkids have left 🙁 so I’m wearing a bit more fragrance today. I’m in 2024 Absolue Pour le Soir. Just gorgeous.

    1) I’d love to receive SL Un Bois Vanille or Jovoy Fire at Will, but I’m sure I won’t!
    2) Let’s see, an unsniffed fragrance… maybe the Opera or Atelier de Balthus candle from Astier de Villatte.
    3) Probably no fragrant gifts for anyone, unless it’s a Christmas candle. Those Frasier Fir candles are tempting.

I would like Parfume De Empire Madagascar Vanilla Balm. Cannot get a sample and right now only available from their website.

Only two gifts being given – Sephora cards to my great neices.

We brought home our tree from the little Canadian shop around the corner, and this year the scent is especially delicious — the whole house smells like winter. The kids did the decorating, and now we’re officially in full holiday mode.
I’m curled up with Rivals by Jilly Cooper, and my scent of the day is Lilac Love by Amouage. If Santa is taking requests, I’m quietly hoping he brings me Guidance perfume by Amouage, Shalimar L’Essense or unsniffed the Honey Rose LPRN that others seem to want also.

The Halifax Explosion-if you read about it, it’s a horror story. People suffered so much. Many more would have died if our American friends hadn’t been so generous and offered a tremendous amount of help and organized it so quickly.

I’m not thinking about gifts just yet because “denial is not just a river in Egypt.” Feeling seasonal in Fumerie Turque due to an interesting local reason. Our house is on a corner and just about square with the compass. When our neighbors to the West use their fireplace, as they are today, the strongly prevailing Westerly winds often blow a light smokiness into our drafty old house. FT sweetens the smoke. Cold and snow forecast for tonight but often the worst weather stops North of us.

    Hello NST!
I’m still (mostly) tied up with holiday and family things, but have been decanting a few vials for an NST friend and so gave myself a few daubs of the last one I uncorked – SL Arabie, which smells so happily holiday that I should just wear that alone until Jan 1. (but of course I won’t, hahaha.)
I have a bit of a conundrum…on Thanksgiving, I wore Dior Babycat, from a decant that a kind NST swapper sent me, and when I hugged one of my sons’ girlfriends hello, she said, mmmh, you smell so great, what is that? So I told her, and said I would be happy to make her decants of some spicy ambery incensey scents, and that I would have included them in the first package I made for her but she’d said she liked citrus, bergamot, orange blossom, etc., so I went in a whole different direction.
So now I’m going to decant from my Babycat decant for her, and maybe also some Ambre Sultan. What are some others that fall into this profile? Are there any that I could recommend for her that don’t break the bank? (She works in the non-profit sector). I don’t have a huge amount of Babycat left to give her. Of course, I should really hunt down a full bottle for myself, then I won’t have this problem, haha, so maybe I’m answering part of the poll after all.
I will have to answer the rest later, my mind is full of too many other things at the moment, including making turkey soup, which is why ambery incense spicey scents are not spring to mind immediately. But I hope everyone is having happy holidays, with friends, family, and pets. (Hi Tiptoe the kitty!).
The rain a few weeks back in L.A., then subsequent warmth, has brought out ticks and I’ve had to remove two from our dog in 12 hours and now need to give her a thorough check. We live near some hills and take her walking up there every day, which is glorious but for those evil ticks. (I don’t think we have the Lyme disease ticks in L.A. but I just don’t know and ticks of all kinds must go. I have sometimes tried to figure out the evolutionary reason for ticks and mosquitos, and other than as a food source for other insects or animals, not much springs to mind.

There are plenty of tick-borne diseases in California that affect dogs. This would be a good thing to ask your vet about, as they would know what’s in your location, and there are apparently some preventive medications for dogs.

Also, please make sure you yourself are taking all precautions and getting someone to check your scalp. 🙏 Arthropod-borne diseases can sometimes be particularly nasty and difficult to get rid of.

Thank you for the reminder, nozknoz, I’ve read a lot about the awful diseases that ticks carry *in addition* to Lyme and the struggles that people have had once infected. Just horrible. I will be calling the vet tomorrow once things open back up.

Not sure about scents for my collection this holiday season, but I know I’m getting my daughter a bunch of fragrant presents for Christmas – perfume, shower gel, candles…

Spending these late November evenings watching two wonderful shows: Ken Burns’ “The American Revolution,” and The Beatles Anthology, which I haven’t seen since it first aired in the 90s. (I will watch anything to do with The Beatles.)

I’m wearing Musc Tonkin, from Parfum D’Empire, a beautiful musky, rosy, herbal perfume. Heady stuff.

Like several others, my answers to the poll questions (at least as of now) are none, none, and no.

I sure am glad we have nothing on the agenda today or tomorrow as we are really getting buried ❄️❄️❄️❄️! It’s been snowing all day and will continue all night. Mr. Laila’s already been snowblowing several times today as well as feeding all the birds that grace us with their presence. Staying warm with YR Rose Absolue, cinnamon atop Turkish, Bulgarian and Moroccan roses with warm patchouli at the bottom. Wonderful on a cold, snowy winter day ❤️.

Several of you commented on my recent mention of fresh cranberry/orange relish. Here’s the one I make, which takes only a few minutes and is delicious: In a food processor, using the quick on/off turns, process 1 12-oz. bag of cranberries (washed and stemmed), 1 large navel orange (unpeeled and cut in small chunks), and 3/4 cup granulated sugar until finely chopped. Cover and chill at least 1 hour. Garnish with an orange twist if desired. That’s it!

Hope you’re all enjoying the evening!⛄️

That was my Mom’s recipe for cranberry relish! It gets better as it sits for a day or two. She used a blender back in the day since we didn’t own a food processor.

I’ve been wearing a lot of perfume but not managing to post: PdE Cuir Ottoman, Profumum Roma Rosae Mundi, Capsule Parfums Legion, SL Vierge de Fer, and Borneo 1834, HG Dilettante, etc. etc.

What is the fragrance-related gift you’d most like to receive this year? One can always dream….Roberto Greco Œillères

Let’s say you were going to ask for just one unsniffed fragrance this year, what would it be? Vintage Bandit, why not?

Are you giving any fragrance items for gifts this year, and if so, what?I wish I had more fragrance enthusiasts in my life but nothing aside from re-gifting a scented candle (Mr. allo can’t handle them – I’m barely getting the Paperwhite Narcissus past him😬)

I would like Lyn Harris to gift me a complete set of Perfumer H samples.

This brand is difficult to sample in the U.S., where she has no stores. Occasionally, one can find an obscure, non perfume shop that stocks a few of her scents, such as Gardenheir, a gardening-focused shop in a ski town in the Catskills.

    https://gardenheir.com/pages/about

Nowhere I am likely to be. 😸

Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving and those among you under the weather have recovered.

Oh dear, was still shopping online yesterday to take advantage of amazing perfume deals we’ve had in the UK with Black Friday this year, eight purchases, the horror, but to answer one of the poll questions, one purchase is a vintage coffret of Grey Flannel for my brother who is going to be over the moon. I was wearing Orchid Soleil (another of my ‘Lillyjo made me buy it’ 50ml £40). I love this floral gourmand which leans more floral, good name too. I was reminded that I didn’t confess to Donatella in the fall, IIRC it was a fairly reasonable 4 bottles. As I wear the perfumes this month I will give details.

I picked up a bottle of the replacement for L’Occitaine Eau des Baux – Cedre Encens – for my son. And I ordered a couple of candles from Dirt Road Candle Company (from my home state of Iowa) based on a friend’s recommendation – for me and for possible gifts. Otherwise no fragrant gifts or wants. Recovering from hosting and decorating over this weekend – feeling a little decrepit as my bad shoulder has flared recently.

The only samples I’ve smelled are ones Gaynor passed on to me and although I like them I don’t plan to buy them. I’d really like some of those lemon-shaped Bronnley soaps – which you can no longer buy here, or Roger-Gallet soap (also gone ) or even Wrights Coal Tar Soap (gone, gone, gone). I’m on the west coast in torrential rain, it sounds like thunder. The clouds are down to the valley so no view of the mountains or glaciers. It’s a shame because I’m with someone who has never been to this part of the world and although she’s experiencing the drama (dark bush, flooded rivers, waterfalls) she’s not seeing the southern alps, the reflecting lakes or rata in bloom. By the time the weather clears we’ll be gone. Heading to Okarito and Hokitika for some dramatic beach scenery. The silver lining – no sandflies! Wearing twilly tutti fruitti (?) and I plan to buy Barenia Intense some time. Too wet to say rabbit rabbit rabbit…they’ll be pretty miserable today.

Kanuka, your writing is evocative-makes me want to visit your part of the world:)

As for soaps: I loved Claus Porto, and they used to be about $6.00 CDN. Now they’re only available at one deluxe store and they cost $30. I love the Roger-Gallet and fortunately they’re still available here. The one based on their original is my favourite. Can you find a local supplier who makes good soap?

Sounds like a lot of people had a really nice holiday!

I am trying to shop for my BFF who has a Christmas birthday. It’s proving a bit tricky this year. In the past she’s worn Chanel No5, and I’ve given her First, Iris Powder, and Blu. She likes things that are French and have aldehydes. She’s a very elegant person who loves sports. I could play it safe and go the Chanel 5 route, but I’m also thinking about 24 Faubourg. What do you all think? I love 24 Faubourg. She looks after a lot of people and I want to get her something that is very beautiful. Any insight is appreciated.

Chicago had its snowiest November day ever yesterday, 8.4”. Our area got the 8” and we’re expecting another 1-3” tomorrow, then extremely cold temps the rest of the week, down into the teens and highs only in the 20’s. Feels like we’re having mid-January weather when it’s not even December and it’s still technically fall! Bizarre!

Glad to be home today getting out the holiday decorations and winter linens and enjoying my favorite November scent, the original L’Occitane Vanille layered over BBW’s Vanilla Bean Noel. Mmm good ❤️!

Hi all — been AWOL for a bit, with the Sicily vacation and then catching up at home, and then getting a cold, which I am just in the worst part of now. (When you come home from vacation to a household that tells you they’re sick…sigh.)

    Answers to questions:
    – I’d like to get some Mendittorosa and Antonio Alessandria samples for Christmas. Yes, I was supposed to go to Giardinolfattivo in Palermo to sample them on my last day, but I was only in Palermo for about 18 hours, and it was in the opposite direction of all the things I wanted to see. Had I stuck to the itinerary I’d set out for myself when I woke up, I’d have gotten there, but then I wandered. And the wandering was good. I am a bad perfumista, but then I also told myself that I was unlikely to buy a €450 bottle based on 10 minutes of sniffing, anyway. And so I’m hoping someone will buy me some samples for Christmas, so I can sniff to my heart’s content.
    – I’m not big on unsniffed, but I did order a travel size of Fzotic Ummagumma Extra Intense unsniffed a few days ago. But…then, I own Ummagumma, so only sorta unsniffed.
    – Strangely, I AM giving fragrance as a gift this year. Ockeghem Teen is the least girly girl ever and doesn’t wear makeup (except maybe 3 times a year) or fragrance. But my niece, who is Sporty Spice and a new teen, is suddenly into all that stuff. She apparently wants small bottles of Sol de Janeiro scents, which I know nothing about, but her request was corroborated on a Strategist teen girl gift list that I saw last week. Not sure what I think about perfumes from a company that is requiring me to get a sample of “bum bum cream” with the order, but whatever. Teens.

I’m trying to think of some other samples to get for my niece, to try to steer her nose. Maybe a sample of Arielle Shoshana Saturday? Anyone have any other thoughts for a 13-year-old kickass softball pitcher and soccer goalie?

Pitcher and goalie — what a fascinating combination. Attack in one sport and defense in another. But as to perfumes, I would bet that the brand names are more of the allure than the scents themselves, at this point in her life. I suggest adding samples of light things (maybe Jo Malones?) but expecting most of the excitement to be about the Sol de Janeiro that appears to be all the rage for her now.

Sunday night and I’m finally getting to the poll:

The fragrance-related gift I’d most like to receive this year, partially answered above, is a bottle of Dior Babycat because I love it and so does my son’s girlfriend so I could decant some for her in addition to the small amount I’m currently working with. And Imma cheat here and say that purely for myself, I’d love a bottle of Lutens Daim Blond since this is a fantasy poll anyway.
The one unsniffed fragrance I’d like is a Profumum Roma one that has spice and myrrh and amber with a bit of incense and vanilla. I think there are a bunch that might qualify.
I always give a bunch of fragrance items as gifts each year as I have a sister, many nieces, girlfriends of sons, four sisters-in-law and a mother-in-law who all like perfume. One girlfriend is definitely getting some Babycat. Everything else is up in the air, I guess I have 24 days to figure it out.

After still another vet visit this afternoon, Teflon kitty has *finally* been given a clean bill of health re: her ears.

In other news, the snow that showed up here Saturday morning was between a dusting and a coating. But the wind! And the cold!! High temperature yesterday was 22 degrees F. My next utility bill is going to be an ugly one.

    Poll answers!

    1. No fragrance gifts unless I get it myself. Teflon kitty would, but she doesn’t know how to use a computer.

    2. Unsniffed perfume? I went ahead and ordered a travel size of Deixis from Fzotic during their Black Friday sale. Also picked up some Imaginary Authors samples.

    3. Giving other people scented gifts this year? Unlikely. Also, my Xmas list has been cut way down. I only have a couple of people on it this year.

SOTD = back in Dior Hypnotic Poison EdT. My dabber sample is disappearing fast. It may not clear out a room anymore, but on me HP easily lasts 24 hours or more.

It’s the whole lack of opposable thumbs thing. Cat typing doesn’t work very well. 🤣

Well enough for now. She starts on her allergy medicine tomorrow. I figure she’s earned a day off from me pestering her.

That’s great news for Teflon! I think she’d be a good shopper (my cat was quite skilled; he always knew what I wanted!)

A second vote of confidence for Tef as a purr-sonal shopper!

Yay for the good news at last about Teflon’s ears. Hope the allergy medicine will prove the definitive answer. No cologne for your brother?

My brother has never been a cologne kind of guy. I can’t ever remember him wearing any.

Re-reading all the instructions for the oral allergy medicine. It’s sorta complicated to administer. And I have to watch Teflon for 30 minutes afterwards in case of side effects.

SotD EL SpellBound. After Champagne/Yvress, it is my favorite by Sophia Grojsman.

I’m not sure I have an answer for each question but here goes (I did them out of order):

I probably won’t give anyone any fragrant gifts. My sister got several samples and my back-up of SM Tonka for her anniversary-birthday month so she may feel quite well-scented.

I just got my unsniffed purchase. Somehow I stumbled on a review of BDK French Bouquet at OSME Perfumery and felt the need of a hajusuuri-style 100ml sample as French Bouquet seems like it was D/C’d and disappearing over the horizon. I love it, and I was also delighted by OSME’s sending of a very generous amount of curated samples. I’d not heard of them but the customer service was very good.

I’d like some scented body creams. I find I need both the skin-protecting quality and the satisfaction of a thunk, which thunk is more achievable with scented body products than with perfume! 😁

Dustings of snow and cold here-kind of caught me off guard as I was thinking we’d still be having those Sunny 50’s afternoons for a while!

It is indeed easier to thunk scented body products…in fact I thunked a shower gel today.

So glad you loved the French Bouquet!

Temps only in the 20’s today and now we’re getting the additional 1-3” we were unfortunately promised. Bitter cold also promised for the rest of the week.🥶

Very glad to be home all day putting away the rest of the fall decor and getting out everything that says ‘winter,’ including some of my favorite December fragrances. My SOTD is one I know has its fans here, Clinique Wrappings. Layered over BBW’s pine & citrus Frosted Winter Woods. I smell like a snow-covered forest.❤️

For the poll, I took advantage of the Serge Lutens cyber Monday deal to purchase a Discovery set which I will split between my grandtwins. Now that they’re in college I thought it a good time to introduce them to something niche and a little bit more sophisticated than what I’ve gifted in the past.

All my 🐇🐇🐇 said “No-o-o, it’s way too cold to come out today! “ 🥶 Hope your bunnies fared better!

I was out with a friend today, so I kept things low-key with BBW Butterfly lotion.

On the weekend I was in Dior Addict (Saturday) and EL Azuree (on Sunday). Wrappings also made an appearance in the mix at bed time.

I need to find a nice vanilla based lotion to wear with the likes of Addict and the new Shalimar for winter.
