Friday scent of the day 11/28

Posted by Robin on 28 November 2025 138 Comments

It's Black Friday aka Buy Nothing Day, and Native American Heritage Day. (Also, National French Toast Day.) Birthdays: William Blake, Nancy Mitford, Berry Gordy, Randy Newman, Jon Stewart, Martin Clunes. Our community project for today: pick your Black Friday poison...wear the last fragrance you bought, wear a cheap thrill, or wear a fragrance you love but refuse to buy in a full size because it's too expensive. (We've done this project several times.)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Unless I am forgetting something (which is quite possible) the last thing I bought was a decant of Imaginary Authors Dipped in Chocolate, and that's what I'm wearing today.

Reminder: there will be a community project on 12/5, and I am hoping to replenish the stock by the end of the day!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is detail from Forest Scene. Chalee, Pop. 02.527. circa 1950. via Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa. Bonus reading about this work at Gilcrease.

    Hello and tgif!
Sotd is Dior Rouge Trafalgar Esprit de Parfum from a miniature because I am reluctant to pay so much for a (although delicious) very sweet strawberry candy shampoo. I do love it so much, it’s a lot of fun.
Poor doggo’s left ear flap is very swollen due to aural hematoma (burst blood vessel). I just dropped her off at the vet for surgery. They need to cut an opening in her ear to perform suture of the blood vessel and drainage. Ouch. 🙁

Forgot to post yesterday since Thanksgiving was a chaos for me. It wasn’t until 5 that I was able to apply perfume. The SOTD was Feminite du Bois

The CP will have to wait until Sunday. Since I had yesterday off, I am working today. After this week’s holiday insanity, I need some extra zen and I am wearing Kyoto.

There used to be such a mad profusion of Liz Claiborne scents in the online retailers that I occasionally wondered if they manufactured them just for that market, bypassing brick-and-mortar retail altogether.

Anyway, I’m wearing Spark, a spicy woody oriental, nominally the women’s version, although both this and the men’s are entirely unisex. I have a big 100-mL bottle that I can’t have paid more than $15 for twenty or so years ago, a very cheap thrill indeed.

I kind of love Black Friday. Looking at Indigo (chain of bookstores) to see what’s available 🙂

I’m in Borneo, because it’s gorgeous and I thought I would not be working in close contact with coworkers today-I was wrong. They hate patchouli. Good thing I only wore one spritz.

Hope everyone’s Thanksgiving was awesome, and you all have leftovers for lunch.

You smell wonderful even if your co-workers don’t think so.

I was just reading about leftovers! I was fretting about refrigerated / frozen foods when a power outage went slightly over 4 hours. All good though …

Continuing my unplanned Chanel week, I’m in Eau de Cologne (from a sample.) I love this stuff so much – what a beautiful, elegant scent. Alas, it lasts all of twenty minutes on my skin, so I’d go through a 6.8oz bottle in a flash. At $540.00, it ain’t happening until my financial ship comes in. (I’ve received no notice that it’s even set sail.)

    Happy Friday, everyone!

Daniel this is a favourite of mine, and I did buy the big bottle a long time ago when it was marginally less. I like to get it in my hair or on my collar to make sure it lasts longer. Everything lasts forever on my skin anyway. You smell great!

I hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving with no cooking dramas! I went shopping for a sun hat and came home not only with a hat that isn’t particularly suitable for summer ( though it’s pretty cool, and wearable, Yamamoto black bucket hat) but with a bottle of CDG Zero ( Fanny Bal). It starts off smelling of celery ( not listed in the notes) and bergamot, and then twists to a kind of wood varnish ( quite sharp, as if you’re in the process of painting varnish onto wood) and then softens into a citrus/ wood with a hint of celery ….it’s better than it sounds, and unlike any other CDGs except, maybe, that chlorophyll one.

It sounds rather peculiar, but that can be a good thing in perfumery.
I haven’t tried a lot if CdG’s, the incense series (before I actually started enjoying the note), CdG Laurel and Black. Which is peanuts considering all they have produced.

I still find their perfumes worth trying and they haven’t gone up in price to the same extent as other brands. I really like Ganja of their more recent releases. Copper, too. Not so keen on the Marseille soap one or the Kaws one. Have a nice weekend. Hope it’s not too cold.

It’s damp and chilly, so uncomfortable rather than cold.
I very rarely try new perfumes not having easy access to a good perfume store. But I would like to explore CdG a bit more.

I tried that one out, looking at “rose-ish” scents since it is supposed to have synthetic rose. I used my whole sample up very quickly because I found it quite light. I don’t know if it would end up like some other scents I could not smell at first but then I ended up being able to smell all day and loving (Gypsy Water). Maybe another sample some day. . . .

I’m still in seclusion with what is probably a medium-mild case of covid, and wearing Idyllwild to reassure myself that I haven’t lost my sense of smell. Thankfully Mr. G and I staked out our respective preferred bathrooms years ago so neither of us has to make that small sacrifice … but waving to each other across the room is getting old rather quickly.

My last purchase was a decant of Santal Complet. My last cheap thrill (which I have mentioned before) was Grand Cuvée body mist from Vacation — this one is almost a base fragrance for me. I often wear just a little spritz on my chest and then add something different to my wrists. Although I love both of the above, what I am actually wearing today is Eris Parfums Mx.

Didn’t get to post yesterday: lots of cooking plus busy with grandkids, but I wore a little spritz of my beloved YSL Cinema EDT.

Hope everyone is having a good week.

We’ve reached the weekend, I’m very thankful for that, it’s been a wild week at work.
I’ve been resisting the Black Friday sales, I’ve seen some good prices, but I’m reminding myself that it’s better to get one thing I really want from my buy list, rather than pounce on bargains that aren’t on the list.
In that vein, I’m wearing several samples of Manos Gerakinis perfumes just to make sure that none of them need to leap on to my buy list 🙂 .

Happy Friday NST! I’m very very grateful for this community!

During my Wednesday walk in the park, I got bitten twice and my ankle and upper foot are swollen. Supposed to stay off it, cortisone cream and ice. Not conducive to serving Thanksgiving so I’m making up for it today by lying flat on my back with foot elevated to avoid an Urgent Care visit. Yikes!

Sotd a full bottle blind buy that I’m really enjoying. Natura Ilia Plena. Rose forward. Gorgeous bottle like a Rothko. Brazilian company. And only $55 for a 50ml bottle.

I’m in a cheap thrill, plus I got it on a Black Friday several years ago. Esprit d’Oscar. It’s making me sneeze so I might have to move it out of my collection.

Last night we had a small earthquake just before midnight; I’m not usually up that late but for some reason I was. We don’t get too many here (that I hear of) so it was a bit of a shock. I heard a loud thundering from what sounded like the road above me first, almost like a semi crashing; then the floor shook, and finally it sounded like someone crashed into the garage. Within 5 minutes it was posted online about the quake; however not much sleep for me last night. Thankfully no damage that I can see.

Thanks Laila. It was, mostly because it was unexpected; we aren’t prone to them here. Initially I thought something happened with my elderly neighbor.

Thank you lillyjo! It was pretty bizarre. I noticed quite a few earthquakes in California, and 1 or 2 in Alaska. Makes more sense to me now since I’m pretty much in between there, geography wise.

I was not planning to buy anything today, but I fact I’m wearing my very latest purchase, Hiram Green’s new perfume, Ultra. That is, I am wearing a spritz from a sample I got from Lucky Scent that convinced me to buy a full bottle from them and because they actually have a Black Friday sale – and not to be an enabler but the code is Sweet16 😉 – so I placed my order few hours ago.
At first, smelling the sample and enjoying the narcissus blast, I was not convinced that I needed a full bottle. What won me over was the drydown, which radiates beautiful floral notes in a glorious honeyed Hiram Green tradition. I promised myself I would only buy new perfumes if I was sure that I would actually wear them a lot and this one fits the bill.

Remembering this date that was a long-ago Sunday that year when my son surprised me with his birth a month early! All went well and it truly was the best surprise of my life, so glad I could celebrate with him yesterday. 🥰

At this time of year I ❤️ all things cranberry; the fresh cranberry/orange relish I made for Thanksgiving dinner, the cranberry/orange breakfast biscuits I had early this morning, the cranberry bagel I had with my classic egg sandwich at Einstein Bros. later, and my SOTD for today’s cp (cheap thrill), YR Canneberge & Amande, simply cranberry and almond. It’s nicely tart but not sour and lasts a long time for what it is.

Bright 🌞 today but very cold as we get ready to head out to our town’s annual Winterfest, lots of outdoor fun things going on in our business districts and a trolley to get us there and back. Probably the last time we’ll go out this weekend as we’re expecting our first major snowstorm starting after midnight tonight with 6-8” of snow ❄️ throughout tomorrow. 😫

    Happy weekend to all! ☃️

SOTD = Panier des Sens Blooming Iris EDT

Woot! I bought a large 50mL sample and whoa, it is soooo wonderful! The cost? Hard to judge because I got it as part of a set with a huge tube of 75mL hand cream, also just as good! Love it. For an EDT, so far it’s lasted 2.5 hours, not bad.

Thanksgiving was great. We had dinner at my aunt’s place and we had the perfect number of guests – all family except for one. Anyway, conversation flowed really well. We spent a good amount of time discussing our cousin & fam visit. At the end of the day, I’ve done my bit and will not worry about how they are going from point A to point B.

My splits have been mailed and emails have gone out to the participants. All good except for one person who “joined” the previous time in 2021 and it took her a (long) while to get back to me. I did NOT decant for her because she has not responded to my reach out email. I can wait.

I started to do some research on Roth and the higher income threshold to leverage the 0% long-term capital gains. So far, it looks like I can do up to $8,500 in Roth in 2026. I haven’t done much with the long-term capital gains but will do so next week.

P.S. My most recent fragrance purchase was the new Shalimar L’Essence, which I wore yesterday. I love it dearly! My nice husband bought me a 50 ml bottle for a late birthday gift, since he was in Las Vegas and near the Guerlain boutique, and I loved it so much, I got a big backup bottle when all fragrance was on sale at Nordstrom, for him to give me for Christmas! We have an excellent arrangement when it comes to fragrance, lol.

Super duper late tonight. I got back from my brother’s place about 15 minutes ago. IDK if anyone will see this.

Thankful I was able to have a belated Thanksgiving dinner with him, and that he doesn’t seem to be catching a cold (yet). Got snow coming tomorrow supposedly.

SOTD = back in Hypnotic Poison EdT. This was one of the latest samples I bought, and I got the elusive root beer note today.

I love Hypnotic Poison edt! ( and I like a good root beer note.) Another favorite of mine in the root beer genre was AG Myrrhe Ardente.

Son and family headed to Colo tomorrow – hope it’s not too much snow!

I must have been hyperosmic to something in HP EdT when it first came out. I never smelled root beer or jasmine in it before. Just sore muscle liniment. The current iteration suits me much better.

Predicted snow totals are paltry for the Front Range. An inch or so? But some places in the mountains might get 6 – 8 inches.
