It's Hump Day and World Pneumonia Day. Happy 80th to Neil Young! Other birthdays: Grace Kelly, Booker T Jones. What fragrance are you wearing?
On Mary Cassatt's The Boating Party, which I used to go visit regularly at The National Gallery of Art when I lived in Washington DC, Wikipedia says...
The vibrancy of the woman and child, as well as the boat and sea, are indicative of this Impressionist emphasis on bright colors based on plein air observation. The cropped view of the boat and the asymmetrical composition also suggest the influence of Ukiyo-e prints, which interested Cassatt. In 1890, Cassatt had visited the great Japanese Print exhibition at the École de Beaux-arts in Paris.
So to tie together the south of France (Cassatt painted The Boating Party while living in Cap d'Antibes) and Japan, I'm in Diptyque Kimonanthe.
Reminder: on 11/14, for Claude Monet's birthday, wear a fragrance that reflects the spirit of Impressionism (Wikipedia: "characterized by visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, unusual visual angles, and inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience") or scent a favorite Impressionist painting, or do something else creative with the theme.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image is detail from The Boating Party, Mary Cassatt, 1893-1894, via The National Gallery of Art.
I’m wearing La Chasse aux Papillons today, and yesterday I wore Cuir d’Ange. Both feel impressionistic to me.
I’d love to hear why they feel that way to you Glannys! Your take is unfailingly creative and very often poetic.
I haven’t thought about it deeply, sorry. I think it’s the soft focus of Cuir d’Ange and the light, airy feel of La Chasse.
Perfect descriptions!
Oh, thank you!
After my Walforf Astoria visit yesterday for Shalimar, I will be in Shalimar for days. Today I am pairing the body lotion with the new Essence
Started watching Frankenstein. Why does Jacob Elordi look good even as a monster? And drinking my literary tea for Mary Shelley from Simpson & Vail.
Mary Shelley forever! 🙂
At the Waldorf, how nice! Hope they served the Shalimar tea 😉
They didn’t, but they served a nice 30 min presentation. Lots of sniffing!
Have you tried the new one?
Got the 30 ml bottle. Fave is prob the Mexique version, but new one is nice & will get some wear out of it.
Mine is the Madagascar version!
I’m so glad you got to go to the event!
On Monday I received a package of decants, so I was going to wear one of those, but I couldn’t get the box open. Since I was in a hurry, I grabbed a 5ml perfume oil from Alkemia, Among the Pines. Less piney than I would have thought.
Among the Pines should be piney!
I’m wearing Opus VI again today. I can pair it with The Magpie, 1869 which is beautifully snowy.
I will listen to the Harvest Moon CD today, celebrating Neil Young.
Feeling super lazy this morning so I’m stealing ringthing’s idea and The Magpie but scenting it with Poudre de Riz from Pierre Guillaume, because it evokes powdery white snow for me and because I have a sample I’ve been meaning to re-test. (it’s been years, and in my memory, it’s fused a bit with Lorenzo Villoresi’s Teint de Neige., another powdery snowy scent.
Thanks for the inspirations ringthing! I’m playing Harvest Moon now too and a bit later some CSN&Y.
Such good music LesLiesse, enjoy!
Happy Hump Day!
Sotd Jones Road Shower because I’m going to see Bobbi Brown tonight talk about her new book. Going w fellow BB/Jones Road Beauty enthusiasts.
That sounds like a fun evening. Do tell us more tomorrow!
Have fun!
Pretty cool LesLiesse!
Report back on the event!
Exciting!
I think I’ll continue with a floral approach to impressionism, I’m wearing Scherrer 2. There’s a lot of flowers in there!
There sure are!
Wearing SL Vetiver Oriental for this typical November day. That is to say, windy, cold, and grey. I love this scent so much, but it’s become so specifically attached to this time of year that I rarely wear it otherwise.
I will have to back-in to connect this with the CP, so the only thing that came to me was for his painting, La Japonaise. Maybe at that time, the term “oriental” would be used for things Japanese-related? A bit of a stretch, I know, but that’s it for today.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Japonaise_(painting)
Have a good day, all.
Scent and weather twins with you today! I didn’t get to wear all the vetivers I wanted to wear last week.
So you’re a Vetiver lover, too! Do you have a favorite?
Yes, I am fond of vetiver although I feel like I’m not much of a connoisseur because I have never sniffed some of the iconic ones like Guerlain Vetiver and Encre Noire.
My sentimental favorite is Timbuktu. And my other two full bottles are Vetiver Oriental and Vetiverus. Tell me yours!
Timbuktu is classic. Now I can’t remember who makes Vetiverus – it’s an English brand, right?
I’ve tried so many vetivers, but in my rotation now are Vetiverissimo and Fat Electrician. Haven’t found the perfect all-year one yet.
Wearing Amouage Epic today since I have a huge craving for it. I could have worn Arabie but wasn’t quite feeling it.
You gotta go with what you feel!
I am wearing Pictura Fragrans Kopi Lewak. It was a big blast of chocolate patchouli to start, but now I am getting coffee, vanilla, and civet. It’s nice!
There are rainbows this morning from my lanai and the wind is gusting a bit. I might stay home and read.
Kopi LUwak!
Im going to have to put that on my sample list, yum. Do you live in Hawaii full-time?
Sounds beautiful!
Wow. 🌈🌈🌈
For the CP I am wearing Jo Malone Poppy & Barley for Monet’s painting Coquelicots – The Poppy Field near Argenteuil…shown here https://www.musee-orsay.fr/en/artworks/coquelicots-1010
You smell great! I have this perfume in the small bottle (maybe it only came in that size?) but in any case, I may wear this tomorrow or Friday.
I’m in DSH Muresque and matching it to Harold Harvey’s The Blackberry Harvest and Elizabeth Adela Forbes’ Blackberry Gathering. Muresque is a juicy, dark blackberry perfume.

Yay for Muresque. Great match-up.
Hey Robin, so glad to see a Mary Cassatt painting–you know she spent her formative years in our neck of the woods (outside of Philadelphia) and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. There is even a street named for her family (Cassatt Avenue) near the Berwyn train station on the Main Line, where I grew up–rode my bike there!!!
Still cold today, so enjoying the warmth of Chergui…it helps.
Love Chergui! I thought it was going to be warmer but boo hiss it was COLD! I treated one of my neighbors to lunch for her birthday or I may hav e hibernated at home!
Just received Chergui not long ago. That is a great cold weather scent!
Bucks County PA is a beautiful area.
Gosh, sadly I did not know any of that, thank you! But have loved that painting for years. It used to have a very prominent place at the National Gallery, right across from the doorway to one of the main galleries so that you saw it from the main hall. That and Whistler’s Symphony in White / The White Girl were my 2 favorite paintings there.
And in the olden days you could just pop down to the National Gallery and wander around and it was so peaceful, there weren’t a million tourists taking selfies & whatnot.
I had an experience many years ago at the Art Institute of Chicago–one of my favorite John Singer Sargent paintings is a portrait of Mrs. George Swinton. I had never seen it in person and didn’t know that it was in the collection of the museum. I turned a corner and…..there she was, larger than life as most of his portraits are….amazing. I don’t think I moved for half an hour!
What a nice memory.
SOTD = Gucci Memoire d’une Odeur
Love! I should wear this more often! On theme because Monet could have felt cold at some point in time? Yesterday, I wore Atelier Sous Le Toit de Paris, another love! On theme too yesterday because Monet would either have been in Paris and/or his work was shown in Paris at some point.
Has anyone seen the limited edition Coke Vanilla Cream? I don’t do diet so I’m only interested in the full sugar version. Anyway, Wegmans has the diet version only. I went to Customer Service and the woman there said the Coke guy is there everyday and she will ask. I went again today because no one won the Mega jackpot AND I did not get a phone call. Nada. She will send an email to find out what’s what so let’s see what happens in the next few days!
Decluttering seems to be the name of the game these days (years for me but who’s counting?). As such, here’s a gift article on Holiday decluttering. Enjoy!

Smelling lovely in Memoire d’une Odeur! I may copy you tomorrow.
My son tried the Zero version. He said he liked it.
Gorgeous bottle that actually matches the perfume. It’s funny how uncommon that is.
Mother Nature’s gifts today: blue skies, bright 🌞, and temps warming to the mid-50’s, Autumn returns! After the cold, snow and bitter winds, I feel like I’ve returned home after being in a strange place for 2 days. And, surprisingly, despite the nasty weather, many of the trees that were at their color peak have hung onto their leaves, giving the day a beautiful golden glow I’ve missed. To keep that glow going, I’m enjoying Hermes Ambre des Merveilles as my SOTD. Perfect!
I treated myself to a dip in the hot tub earlier and absorbed some much-needed vitamin D and just finished a virtual yoga class. Time to prepare for grocery-shopping tomorrow, then settle in with 😻😽😸and my 📖 for the evening.
Peace ☮️✌️to all! 🍁🍂
Enjoy your evening with cats!💕
Teflon kitty thinks that 😻😽😸 have an excellent evening ahead.
My feet are in the water enjoying a mani pedi.
SOTD is Sugar Leather.
If Neil Young is 80…
Gosh
Oh to live on sugar mountain…
What a beautiful song.
What color did you get this time?
They played tons of Neil Young on the radio here today. I’d forgotten some songs…
I’m wearing Tihota today from a sample I was gifted. Trying to think what I could match it with? Maybe for the feeling of a French impressionist painting I found that features a sunlit pathway – simple, yet beautiful in its simplicity.
That works!
Copied Nina from yesterday with SOTD VC&A Bois d’Iris to match Monet Irises.
Those VC&A bottles have such a nice, solid feel to them.
Hiya NST!
I think I actually saw the Northern Lights last night. When I went outside, the sky had a weird haze to it, and I saw a faint greenish cloud in one area that dissipated after 15 minutes. Not nearly as vivid or striking as the pictures that get posted everywhere. I will keep chasing auroras, since I want to see the red and purple ones!
SOTD = IA Slow Explosions. Still thinking on what to do for the CP.
I saw some pictures this morning. They were pretty awesome.
Some of the local photos here were freaking amazing.
Lots of clouds in the sky tonight. Not very good conditions for sky gazing. Grumble.
I saw them last summer when I went to my home province. If you take photos with your phone, the colors are much more pronounced. I’m sure there’s a science behind it but I was quite amazed at my picture quality.
I did take one picture last night. Need to play around with my settings. Don’t think my exposure was long enough.
I am also in an area with a lot of light pollution.
That could be. My sister has an IPhone and had to do some fiddling with settings. My Samsung seemed to work OK with no extra work (which kind of amazed me).
Lucky you! I didn’t hear it talked about yesterday before it happened so I missed it. But many many photos posted today from the Chicago area and lots of news coverage. Supposed to be visible tonight but haven’t seen anything yet.🤞
I have a Space Weather app on my cell phone. It was going nuts with notifications yesterday. Been quiet today, though.
I hear a lot of people saying that the best time to look is between 8pm and midnight. And pack your patience. I’ve watched meteor showers in the past, so I am familiar with the drill.
We had a corporate visit today, which was exhausting. I left while they were still there.
I still don’t have a working furnace. I’m feeling glad that I kept buying clearance blankets and throws over the years. They are being put to good use.
My sotd is No.19 for obvious reasons. Lol.
Ugh, what a day you had! Smart shopping on those blankets, for sure.
