It's Hump Day, SWINTON’s birthday and Guy Fawkes Day. The Beaver supermoon reached its peak this morning but should still be impressive tonight. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Lalique Encre Noire.
Reminder: on 11/7, wear a fragrance with vetiver, if you have one. (This is a repeat from 2017.)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Lalique Cabochon ring ("An iconic, must-have piece of jewellery, the Cabochon ring is a signature item which gives free rein to the peerless skill of the House of Lalique. Created in 1931 by René Lalique, the minimalist ring is the epitome of eye-catching style, combining simplicity with elegance") comes in 18 colors and is $200.
Blanche
Nice to meet you Blanche. 😀
😆
And thanks for letting me know about Brown Sugar and Fig!!!! Will keep my eyes 👀 open for it!!!
Where’s Rose? 🌹🌹🌹
Thank you for 3 a.m. extra points, Robin! 😂
Today’s scent is a classic – Guerlain Vetiver.
Of course! You were first out of the gate!
and you smell great.
I’m in Sisley-a spray of Soir de Lune, and their hair care spray. It’s a good combination!
We got lots of rain this week, and more coming. Nice to see rivers and streams and ponds filling up 🙂
So long as they don’t overflow, it’s good news 🙂
Happy Wednesday, all! Classic 1970s Week continues here in the City of Angels.
Last night, I wore (for the first time) Oscar de la Renta EDT, from 1977. I don’t know how old my bottle is, but there’s no bar code on it, and the ingredients are listed as alcohol, water, and fragrance. I picked it up (unopened) on eBay for a song. It was supposedly inspired by L’Heure Bleue, but I’ve only smelled the Guerlain once, and too long ago to know how close they really are.
At any rate, this gets a “wow” from me. It’s a beautiful, powdery, abstract white floral – unquestionably feminine, but the spices, gentle woods, and fuzzy musk in the base made it easy for this fella to wear.
Today, I’m in vintage Lagerfeld For Men, from 1978. This one is near and dear to me – an early signature scent of mine. I first wore it in the mid-80s, and fell in love with it. Absolutely intoxicating stuff.
I was a broke acting student in San Francisco, and initially I couldn’t afford a bottle, so I’d stop at Macy’s in Union Square and spray my wrists from a tester before heading off to class, or on a lunch break. It didn’t smell overtly masculine to my inexperienced nose, so it felt wonderfully daring to wear it. I saved up for a bottle – a sexy, art-deco treasure – and it looked so darn chic on my dresser.
I highly recommend reading this review/buying guide of it over on Kafkaesque’s blog. She gets it.😎
https://kafkaesqueblog.com/2012/12/06/review-karl-lagerfeld-for-men-cologne-or-vintage-karl-lagerfeld-classic/
Yeah, it’s Lagerfeld For Men, but it’s thoroughly unisex, and man, oh man, would I love to smell this on a woman.
Oscar de La Renta brings back wonderful memories for me. I wore it in high school and drained several bottles. I still had it in my collection in the 90s. KL I also wore and agree, definitely unisex.
I loved that KL. Loved it.
This reads like a short story Daniel, so engrossing! I knew that Macy’s well. I checked the Kafkaesque blog post. Wow, I went to Evil Bay looking but only the Classic reformulations available.
How did your audition go?
You smell fabulous in both, Daniel. And I love that department store story. Like many of you here, I wore Oscar de La Renta (women) in the 80s and 90s and loved it to death. I still have a vintage mini of the parfum. As for Lagerfeld for Men and for LesLiesse, I have several clues for tracking down a vintage bottle online. The main one is that the label at the bottom of the bottle will say Lagerfeld Parfums, Inc. (Later the brand was sold to Coty and then resold again, can’t remember to whom. Interparfums maybe?). 2ndly it will probably say ‘cologne’ and prolly not EdT. And it will definitely not say “Classic” as that was only added later. Thirdly, it will probably have a silver cap with a silver ring at the top, though the ring can sometimes fall off, leaving an unsightly hole where it once was but not affecting the ability of the cap to seal. Good luck! It’s really worth tracking down.
LesLiesse!
I have an ample supply of the vintage stuff, and will send you some.😊
The audition went well, I think. But unfortunately they’re offering me a different role than the one I went in for, and I’m not interested in the other part. So, not a happy ending. Oh well.
Sorry about the audition Daniel. That’s very generous and thoughtful of you to offer some of your bounty!
(And Denise, happy to send you some of the Lagerfeld Parfums stuff, too!)
Thank you Daniel very generous but no need. I’ve owned it on and off for years and it’s lovely.
Back in the day the OG Oscar de la Renta was a beauty. I loved sniffing it at the department store perfume counters.
I’ve joined Robin in Encre Noire, partly because it’s gorgeous, but mostly (this morning) because it would either play nicely with or completely obliterate the tenaciously lingering Telegrama spritzed on last night. For some reason, last night and this morning I’ve been particularly sensitive to scent — Mr. G’s bedtime spritz of Italian Leather made me cough, and the mingling scents of Encre Noire, coffee beans and the orange-rind-iness of my cuticle serum now are just amazing.
Hey twin!!
What’s your cuticle serum??
ps I use that Hard as Hoof stuff and adore it for both nails and cuticles, but now I want it to smell like orange rinds.
I always want to smell like orange rinds!
😆
It’s from Dear Sundays, a salon in NYC that also does internet orders. I love their polishes, and they have (off and on) two cuticle serums. The orange-y one is Cs02. I’ve also tried Cs01 and it’s good too.
Dropping in to post my SOTD – Bal d’Afrique (vetiver!).
And smelling fabulous! Thanks for the reminder that this has vetiver.
Claiming points in Zoologist Moth, I’ll save my Encre Noir for Friday.
I need to pick a scent for Friday!
Turns out I was CP compliant in AdV signature yesterday and today I’m going to wear FM French Lover.
Enjoyed going to a concert last night with John Scofield, an amazing jazz guitarist, along with pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Bill Stewart.
That sounds like an amazing concert!
Sounds wonderful!🎶
I’m wearing Cra-yon Art Life again. It’s a citrus perfume with a dry fig and ( pencil shavings) cedar perfume. It’s a nice morning-scent. Jessica reviewed it back in December. I’m going to look for more from this brand.
And I forgot all about it. I should try that one.
Vetiver is one of my least-liked notes. But I have one vetiver-centered fragrance. I’ll wear it Friday.
Today I am wearing Maksim Cologne d’Agar. Notes of bergamot, Sichaun pepper, rose, saffron, frankincense, agarwood, sandalwood, vanilla, labdanum, and benzoin. It’s deep and rich and the oud is not too loud or barnyardy. Also, it’s an extrait concentration, I have no idea why it’s named “Cologne.” Maybe the perfumer is making a joke.
It’s pouring rain here and I have to go to the grocery store…
Oh, but don’t wear one even on Friday if you don’t like it! It is not worth suffering for.
Maybe just cologne in the old school, non-concentration-specific sense of perfume for men?
What you’re wearing today sounds wonderful! I must find it to try sometime. I wanted to say, I’m with you on not much liking vetiver. It, along with iris, are two of my least-liked notes. Do I hereby lose all my perfume credentials?
I’m glad ringthing mentioned Moth above. I do have that, and like it, so I can wear that on Friday. I had no idea it has vetiver in it. When I looked on Fragrantica I had nothing whatsoever from their list of scents with this note.
ITA with Calypso. Your SOTD sounds marvelous!
It is a cool day here and I am going to enjoy some Babycat.
Can’t go wrong with that kittycat
Meow! 😻
Sotd The Different Company Sel de Vetiver.
Happy Wednesday! 🌻
One of my favourite summer scents!
It is one of my favorites too!
Happy Wednesday back atcha!
Thank you, Jalapeno!
I love vetiver and have many from which to choose, but I just HAD to wear Like This today when I saw that it was the Swinton’s birthday! It’s also perfect for a rainy day this time of year.

Here’s the link for Tilda reciting Rumi’s Like This. Read it sitting down or risk swooning is my advice.
Wow, that was gorgeous and swoon worthy. I had to close my eyes while listening. Thanks so much for sharing!
The seductive power of the whisper! And Rumi!
Thank you LesLiesse. That made my day. Her voice is sublime.
I wish she’d record a whole album’s worth of Rumi!
Oooh, I wish I’d seen that connection before I put on my other ELdO FB today.
You hit a double!
Well, I noticed that several of my iris scents have vetiver so I can continue with my iris week AND wear vetiver. Today it is Zara Romance d’Iris.
I’ll be joining you on Friday Kris in an iris-vetiver combo.
Oh, good!
I was having a bit of an iris week too before today! I wore your Bukhara and Atelier’s Iris Silver. 💕
Nice.
I’ll have to check what perfumes I have with a vetiver note, but today I’m wearing Omnia. I had a bottle many years ago, I dithered for ages about replacing it, and I’m so glad I finally did.
I love Omnia, too, and also just replaced my bottle!
Happy Hump Day!
Sotd The Harmonist Yin Transformation, an aquatic floral scent. The nose behind this fragrance is Guillaume Flavigny.
Top notes are Orchid, Bulgarian Rose and Mandarin Orange;
middle notes are Ylang-Ylang, Almond Milk and Iris;
base notes are White Musk, Sandalwood and Benzoin.
On me this evokes a calming energy.
Re: vetiver, I’ve been reading up and will have questions on Friday!
A beautiful day to all!
Calming energy is good!
Just started making chicken soup. The first package of chicken that was in my fridge was sitting in the fridge longer than I thought. Opened the package and knew that it went bad. Good thing that I had chicken breasts in the fridge that were good, other wise my broth would have to be thrown out as well. Wearing Coromandel edp today.
Shoot. Bad chicken smells BAD.
Vetiverissimo from Fzotic is my SOTD, and I’ll be finishing off this sample by the end of the day. I also have a travel spray and a couple other samples so I’m still well-stocked. I love this one.
YUM!
Fat Electrician for me today. I missed that it was Tilda’s birthday — Like This is right next to it in the drawer.
Fat Electrician was my first FB from ELdO. Good stuff!
Even though I might have saved it for Friday, I too am in Guerlain’s Vetiver, from a smallish and vintage splash bottle that I had already taken out of the cabinet and worn one recent evening after a run, as I find the note quite refreshing. Good thing I’m lazy and hadn’t put it back yet 🙂
That one really is refreshing.
I’m cp compliant today in OJ Woman. When I checked the listed notes for several of the scents I have, there were three that have vetiver that didn’t surprise me: Silences, Je Reviens, and Mitsouko. There were, however, some I found very surprising: Encens Mythique, Mahora (really??), Shalimar eau de cologne, Michael (Kors), and Lolita Lempicka (the original one, I think). My nose would never have detected a trace of vetiver in any of those! Now that I know it may be lurking somewhere in the base, I’ll go sniffing for it.
Vetiver in Mahora?? I share your disbelief.
One of the last of our beautiful autumn days here, treasuring every moment. The maple tree that Chance planted in a narrow patch of dirt adjacent to a utility pole in our parkway is growing strong and is all beautiful gold and orange. This spring, Chance planted a purple loosestrife plant in front of our garage in the front of our house in a tiny space between the brick paver and the garage wall and it bloomed beautifully for a long time. This summer Chance planted the beautiful tall white Nicotiana we already have in our night garden in our backyard, one plant close to the front of our house adjacent to the walkway to the front door, so every evening when we step in or out of our front door we are graced with its beautiful fragrance (and there are still 2 blossoms remaining).
So I am honoring and thanking Mother Nature for the beautiful surprises she has given me this year with the last drops of my Pacifica Temple Mountain Temple today. 🙏
Sending☮️✌️to all!
A very eloquent THUNK from you today!
How lovely to have nicotiana right by the door! But a moment of silence for your Tibetan Mountain Temple.
What a cool ring, Robin!
Another gorgeous day here, with blue skies and temps in the mid 60’s. Starting to knock down the piles of laundry despite the nice weather (ha).
Got a few options for vetiver. Not quite up to wearing perfume just yet. But soon. SOTD = commando again.
Hopefully you will be up to wearing some perfume favorites again soon.
I’ve been sniffing the sprayers of a few perfume bottles but haven’t quite been moved to put anything on myself.
But you know darn well I am still wearing perfumed lotion on my shins!
Hope you have piles of nicely folded clean clothes tonight!
Later than Jalapeno tonight.
I had a busy work day and then errands and still trying to clean a bit.
I am still wearing big perfumes. Today is Marc Jacob’s Decadence.
It’s been awhile since I’ve worn it.
That Decadence bottle was so cool!
It’s really heavy too.
Very late here. I was in Dior Addict; it seemed appropriate for a rainy, cold day. Tomorrow is supposed to be back to sun.
