Thursday scent of the day 10/9

Posted by Robin on 9 October 2025 76 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also John Lennon’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking community project points in a dab of Dries Van Noten par Frédéric Malle.

Reminder: on 10/10, wear a fragrance with nutmeg, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows a collection of silver nutmeg graters auctioned off by Wilson55 in the UK in 2023. Per Wikipedia, "In the late 17th century, nutmeg and nutmeg graters became associated with drinking punch, at that time a fashionable alcoholic beverage. Through the 18th century, it was the fashion for men to carry nutmeg in a pocket-sized silver container equipped with a grater in order to add freshly grated nutmeg to punch."

    Hello.
Still on the Shalimar train and today I am riding in compartment Millesime Iris. Shalimar with a slight gourmand flair, I adore it.
I have to thank my intuition or count my lucky stars! I had a sudden impulse to check my credit card transactions on my banking app and I saw that around midnight there was an unauthorised charge of $199.99. Thank goodness the charge had not yet gone through so I immediately called the bank to cancel my card. I needed a calm-me-down ice cream after that!

I live in the UK & on Sunday’s BBC1 Antiques Roadshow programme there was a ‘pocket nutmeg grater’ featured – it was indeed a nutmeg grater with a compartment for a whole nutmeg which the user would keep in their pocket to pull out to grate nutmeg over their food or drink. Of course I don’t know where you live but I believe BBC America in the US shows this programme? Anyway, perhaps both you, & Robin (the pic of the nutmeg graters is gorgeous), might be interested.

Every time I think of nutmeg, I can’t help but think of the YouTube channel of Townsends and to the lesser extent of Early American.

Today is turning out to be a tough day perfume wise. I can’t make up my mind of either no 5 extrait or Ubar.

P.S. The only fact I can recall about nutmegs is that New Hampshire used to be called “The Nutmeg State”, and alas not for a reason that would have them making it a motto on their license plates.

It is quite cool here in MN, so much so I broke out the pumpkin spice creamer for my coffee lol. I’m in SL Daim Blonde, a pure comfort scent for me.
Nutmeg: hubs and I visited the island of Grenada a few years ago. They are the leading producer of nutmeg. We visited a nutmeg farm and then a women’s coop that processed the fruit. Nutmeg is the seed, like a peach. Also learned that nutmeg still in its hard shell has a long shelf life. We bought a bag of about 20 nutmegs dirt cheap, they are still good. I do love a Tom&Jerry in the cold months and a grating of fresh nutmeg is sublime. Once you grate your own you’ll never go back.

We did that in Grenada too 🙂

And, by the end of our 3rd visit to the island, I had bought a stainless nutmeg mill and started putting freshly ground nutmeg on everything…ice cream, tea, coffee, cocktails. It is good stuff.

I’m in Anatole Lebreton Uruk this morning, which supposedly has nutmeg and orange, but they’re impossible to find in the overpowering smell of burning incense. It’s incense with a slight metallic edge, which on another wearing I decided must be the citrus note.

Like others, I do love grated nutmeg. And a Microplane grater works beautifully for it, though it is not nearly as pretty as the graters above. I love my Microplane so much that it’s a kitchen essential and I bought one to use just for the 6 months we were in Germany, since our kitchen didn’t have one.

We done extended stays (2-3 months) in Italy, Portugal and Austria. We never travel without our microplane, a decent chefs knife and chip clips lol. Our rentals have never had these three essentials!

Two of the three are necessary in Germany (bag clips are pretty common there). The last apartment we rented, for six months, had multiple pieces of various food processors / blenders, none of which fit together. I had to buy an immersion blender / mini prep combo to get through, and left it (and many other small things) behind, including two full sets of towels. The owner seemed pretty appreciative when we left, especially as she couldn’t find long-ish short-term renters and resorted to Airbnb after us.

That said, if anyone ever wants to stay in a lovely apartment just outside Frankfurt, I have a recommendation!

I am taking CP points today for my Zoologist Chipmunk. I don’t smell the nutmeg but it’s supposed to be in it.

Robin, I love the picture of all those pretty little silver pocket graters! I have a small wooden one that looks like a mini-pepper grinder. I agree, the smell of freshly grated nutmeg is heavenly. SOTD = Imaginary Authors The Abandoned Mansion

Love it! The 2nd time is the charm. I wore my usual howmanysprays8howmanysprays and it is still going (7 hours) although it was definitely most prominent during the first 2-3 hours.

My sister is in a frenzy trying to figure out what to do when my cousin and her family come in … December 😆. Anyway, I checked out breakfast at The Original Pancake House which is near to where I live and it’s acceptable – i.e. better than Friendly’s IIRC. We’ll check out Friendly’s tomorrow.

I went walking today after not having the walk for the past few months because it was too hot 🥵. I will be working up to 3-4 miles in < a month. I don’t think it’s a matter of NOT having the energy to do it but it is so nice not having to be sweating out there!

Oh, thank heavens I didn’t do 8 sprays of the Uruk this morning. I’d have been drowning. (I was drowning after 1.5. Still smelling it now.)

And Friendly’s! We used to go there with my grandparents, after a long day of working on the farm / in the market. I miss those days, especially this time of year. They decorated the old barn my grandpa had grown up milking cows in with every kind of fall thing, including a rubber spider attached to a string behind the cash register, which if you timed it just right, could really scare people. And my grandpa used to harness up his Belgians every weekend and give hayrides to people at the market…for free! Remember those days? (Now when we go out to a farm, every single thing is more money — want to see the cider press behind a window? $. Want a hayride pulled by a tractor? $$. Want to pet animals or bounce on a bouncy pillow? $$. And, oh, they’ve hired trucks to make mini donuts and BBQ. And there’s a corn cannon for $$. Sigh. I miss the old days, when it was just a farmer’s market, with pumpkins and gourds, and a horse-drawn hayride for free, and it still felt like fall.)

Sorry for the screed in the response. You just pulled me down memory lane!

I have 4 fragrances, 1 for each season, from the Vanillas of the World collection from the house of La Maison de La Vanille, inspired by the exotic lands where vanilla grows. For fall, I enjoy Vanille Fleurie de Tahiti, a gourmand that’s been described as ‘a sugary kiss of vanilla with a delightful glaze of fruity amber,’ and that is my SOTD on a perfect October day with bright 🌞 and temps in the mid-60’s.

Spent most of the afternoon volunteering at my favorite place in town – our library – and will be returning there tonight for a jazz duo performance after Mr. Laila treats me to dinner at our favorite local seafood restaurant we haven’t been to in awhile.😋

Gorgeous day here with temperatures in the low 80’s.

I have a couple of microplanes in my kitchen stuff, and they have been fantastic for zesting citrus fruit or pureeing garlic cloves. Haven’t tried them on a whole nutmeg yet.

Teflon kitty loathes her new medicine (bitter!), but it is showing results. She was playing with a toy she had ignored for over a year earlier today. I will try my best to dose it until the end of October, then re-evaluate.

SOTD = still in Angel Comet. Patchouli, which is perfect for John Lennon’s birthday! I should do a sniff-off between it and the first Jimmy Choo perfume.
