Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, late September 2025

Posted by Robin on 27 September 2025 255 Comments

The swapmeet is open for business through Tuesday! Then Donatella will be dropping by on Thursday.

Meanwhile, we're marking the last weekend in September with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, where you'll go on your next out-of-town trip and the fragrance you'll bring along, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Had a horrible night — think I maybe got 2 hours’ sleep — but am now enjoying my coffee, basking in Idyllwild, and listening to the sounds of a herd of gardeners replanting our South Forty that was denuded when we had to have a gigantic tree removed before it fell on a neighbor’s roof. It’s been pretty bleak looking out there for a while, so I imagine said neighbors will be happy to see vegetation instead of a blanket of weed barrier. Ah, life in the suburbs.

Thanks, y’all! The past two nights have featured weird-a$$ dreams, but at least one has to be asleep to dream so I feel caught up. We’ve had a very manic squirrel around the house (outside, but not for its lack of trying) which generated at least one of the weird dreams (squirrel fully ablaze, running madly through the house). Saturday evening the little maniac was in the wall between our front door and the garage, gnawing loudly on something. Then Sunday morning Mr. G saw the squirrel RUN up our back steps and FLING itself against the glass in the back door, then slowly slide down the glass, cartoon-like. I’m a little worried that it might be rabid. 😳

SOTD is ELdO Eau de Protection.

Leaving next week to see grandkids in North Carolina. We haven’t seen them for about 1 1/2 years so very excited! I think I will bring along what I have in my bag from last time, which includes travel sprays of Angel, Happy, Daisy, Replica On a Date and Gucci Bloom.

    Happy weekend!
    Sotd is TF Soleil Blanc.
Yesterday I went to TF to smell the new Black Orchid Reserve. I was surprised by how it lacked sweetness. It smelled very creamy and buttery, which made it feel quite dense and heavy and it was strong too. I prefer the parfum or edp though.
I then went to Kilian because I wanted to try out Angel’s Share and AS Paradis again. When the SA sprayed them on my arm, I forgot I had Black Orchid on one of them. To my surprise, Angel’s Share layered quite nicely with Black Orchid and gave it the sweetness that was missing.
My next trip is Kuala Lumpur in late October with my parents because they wanted to go somewhere warm and sunny but not beachy and has good food. I will probably bring my summer staples like Epice Marine, Vetiver Tonka, Soleil Blanc/Neige.

Definitely try smelling it and listen to the SA spin crazy stories. According to her, the new Reserve uses an orchid that is critically endangered (only <1500 left in the world). How TF is allowed to milked such precious flowers and have enough essence to produce enough perfume for THE WORLD and continuous production is sus to say the least!

This sounds like hogwash. They supposedly made 1500 bottles of this fragrance, I have a feeling she mixed up her data points.

The “ghost orchid” is an accord and clearly stated as such — no rare flowers died to make this perfume.

Wearing Kyoto today. After that tumble I took on the 18th that seemed to do a number on my foot and knee, I am still hurting from it. My shin is now a bruise and my foot is killing me. Just got to make it through work today and Wednesday before I can see someone on the 2nd. Will be putting my feet up the rest of the time. Just seems like I can’t get in to see anyone before the 2nd and I don’t want to go to the ER for it.

Oh Dawn, I am so sorry!

Seven year ago I got up from my desk and rolled my foot.
It turned out to be three fractures and I wore a boot for many weeks.
I did go to urgent care after sending my sister the NP a picture of my foot. If you have to go to ER, you have to go.

      And, you smell great!

I fell a few years ago, was taking a photo and tripped and fell forward. Like you, I wanted to see someone, just to find out what the damage was. The ER was NOT appealing and it wasn’t an emergency anyway. I don’t have a primary physician but I also knew if I went to a primary MD they could not do much more than I can do (look at the leg). I ended up going to a family medicine MD that was part of an orthopedics practice, she was able to X-ray the leg on the spot, informed me I did not break anything. It was sure better than waiting in the ER. Not sure if your insurance allows you to go to “a specialist”.

    Happy Saturday NST!

    Questions:
    1) do you ever wear one fragrance on one arm, then a different fragrance on the other? Reasons: discerning differences between two similar fragrances w your skin chemistry? compare and contrast scents for fun? Also I’m overflowing on my bowl of samples and looking to get some plinks in! Two arms= double plinking pleasure

    2) on some samples I’ve got from companies or generous NSTers, I have no idea what formulation it is? E.g., I want to get a FB of the TF Ombré Leather but there are multiple formulations listed. Take it to the fragrance counter and hope they can figure out? I’m concerned with an older fragrance, I may prefer the previous formulation and have to blind buy it online. I don’t want to get the wrong one.

Sotd- a long -awaited sample from Luckyscent. Brandt London Fog taken with a cup of matching Earl Grey. (I think I need a break from spicy & fiery scents after this past week as well as coffee/ coffee-based fragrance. Indochine decant tomorrow from a lovely lovey NSTer. Looking forward to it!

I often have different perfumes on each arm or the back of my hand. When I am at home, I tend to just randomly spray throughout the day.
What does your Ombre Leather sample say? I wouldn’t trust the nose of an SA. They won’t even admit that reformulation exists. Lol. If it’s a manufacturer’s sample I am guessing it’s probably the 2018 version which was a relaunch of the private blend version.

I think it’s the TF 2021 parfum. The sample was not labeled but came with a card that checked off Ombré Leather. I don’t think it’s the 2018 as I don’t care for those notes, but I loved this. Good heads up on SA.

      1) Yes, usually for layering. And sometimes to compare, or simply because later I felt like wearing something else and didn’t want to wash the first one off.

      2) The best way to check is to take your sample to a store and spray both it and the store tester for comparison — on skin. If you can’t do that, lillyjo gave you some good advice.

Back when I was seriously testing, I often had one perfume on the back of my hand, another on the back of my forearm, and then double that for the other arm. Some people used to do knees (in the summer, obvs)

      Now, no, pretty rare.

I would not bother taking a sample to a fragrance counter, I just think an SA who knows her stock that well is rare…instead I would try to get recent samples, or go smell a tester yourself.

It’s hard knowing which formulation is in stock at your counter and tbh the SAs often don’t have a clue. If your store is a busy one, I suspect the stock will be the newest formulation as they restock often. But low foot traffick stores have the risk of old stock stored in bad conditions (i.e. harsh and hot lighting/temp) which isn’t ideal.

In stores, I often spray one on each arm. For sure, I have sometimes forgotten which arm had what, so that is a definite downside.

At home, I tend to test serially, try one sample in the AM and another later in the day. They don’t tend to interfere too much that I can tell.

Recently, I went through lots of baggies of jumbled up samples, some had evaporated or leaked. I sorted the survivors into my alphabetized box. Sample costs add up but I have NOT done well with blind buys at all and avoid unless I cannot sample.

    Hi everyone 👋
It is a beautiful fall day but it’s 85F and I’m wearing Bronze Goddess. I love this one, I’ve worn it a lot this summer and it suits the heat which I’m not complaining about, except I’m ready for sweatshirt weather. Getting tired of summer clothes.

Bronze Goddess is so good in the heat. It was pretty much my go-to on days that I did wear something.

I hope the heat ends soon for you. Thankfully it’s cooled off here, just in the last few days; I even had to pull out a long-sleeved shirt!

    SOTD = Zoologist T-Rex

Some love it, some hate it, some don’t really care … I am part of the former 😇. I need to wear it more often!

I had been complaining about not having received a check for liquidating my Provident Bank muni investment. As it turned out, and boo hiss for me, it was actually deposited into one of my accounts! No loss, just an annoyance that I did not think of it myself!

In other news, I have been enjoying my “cuppa” at Panera. These days I have been getting the largest cold cup. Anyway, today, I decided to get an Asiago cheese bagel (🥯 but no holes). I asked if they had anymore Asiago cheese bagels and the cashier said no. I asked what types of bagels they have and she started to rattle off Asiago cheese, Cinnamon crunch and I stopped her and wanted to double check on what she said. They do have the bagel and I was shocked to see the bill showing $6 + ! She clarified that they have not taken out the discount for the cold cup and I just went whew! In any case, as soon as I got the bagel and put it down, a huge 1 inch spider 🕷️ 🕷️🕷️😡 fell down from the curtain. To say I panicked would have been a misnomer. Thank goodness one of the managers took care of it! I have half a mind to send in a complaint but let’s see.

I’m glad you got both your desired bagel and your deposited check, but very sorry about that SCARY spider. Last night when I opened the kitchen porch door, a large bug flew inside. Needless to say, there was considerable feline excitement. It’s not unusual to get those big flying cockroaches here (“palmetto bugs”) so that’s what I thought it was. Later on though I discovered the cats surrounding something on the kitchen rug and saw that it was a cicada. I put the poor thing out of its misery–it wouldn’t have had long to live anyway. And then, after all that, I wound up having a big nightmare about BEDBUGS. Who knows the workings of the dreaming mind?
But I actually came here to say, I love T-Rex too! The dry down is so fantastic. However, I do find those initial moments (maybe an hour even) very difficult to take. You’ve given me an idea for today (I’m having a slow start and realize it’s already Sunday afternoon; my nightmare kept me awake for hours during the night so I slept in late today.)

I typically don’t mind spiders. I found a tarantula in my bathroom recently. Poor thing seemed terrified but he did get “relocated” to the outdoors. I much prefer the tarantula to the scorpion who showed up on our bed the next weekend. And my absolute biggest dislike is flying stinging insects – wasps and yellowjackets since I cannot outrun them.

Good morning from the airport. I’m heading back home after a few days of getting my mother settled in at home. I’m so glad I came down, she really couldn’t have coped herself. Now that we’ve got her usual routines back in place, she should be fine with some home help that has been arranged.
I’ll be able to see how she is doing shortly, I’ll be back in a few weeks for her 95th birthday.
I’m wearing Diorling today, I feel elegant and organised wearing this, which I need after the last few days. Life has come full circle, she bathed me as a baby, now I’ve been helping her shower.

Just like ringthing I’m enjoying a beautiful fall day – except with summer temps, it’s 86 now! But low humidity, so the house is quite comfortable with just fans going.

Unlike ringthing, my summer scents are put away and I’m enjoying early fall ones. I love violet notes and wear a violet fragrance each month. SOTD is my September violet, She Wood by D-Squared, a soft, woody violet, not too heavy for the heat of the day.

Enjoying a quiet weekend getting our houseplants that have been simmering outside ready to come in tomorrow, having given them a good watering today.

“Hope all is well with you” – totally stealing, I mean copying that perfect turn of phrase Daniel. I’m maintaining a positive altitude despite my continuing heavy heart. Rough summer in many ways. I wish I could make your production but I’ve had major schedule disruption which has made it hard to plan. Hope you do it again and maybe we can rally SoCal NSTers to attend together in the future! As for O/L, I did more research and it appears I have the discontinued version. Evil Bay prices are sky high, so I think I won’t be plinking this sample any time soon.

I was meeting a friend to go to a Farmers Market, and it was one of those days when it was too early to get ready and all of a sudden it was time to go. I keep a Mugler “Perfuming Brush” of Alien in my purse, and that became SotD at the first long stoplight! My friend is not a perfume lover and if she noticed it, she said nothing. Got some excellent green beans and tomatoes and had a nice talk with the farmers who it turned out were related to people my friend and I knew from our days of working together. Currently sitting in our screened porch with our “grandcat” (daughter’s cat), whom we’re watching while she’s on a trip to Italy. The weather is perfect! Clear blue sky, low humidity, temps in the 70s. Daughter’s cat is so entertaining! He’s still quite young, so everything catches his interest. Our elderly dog Lucy is scared of him (although she is ten times his size) because he always wants to play with her and that startles her. So we keep them apart.

My foot feels a bit better. The top of my foot is swollen and it hurts a little bit to walk. The goofy thing is that my foot doesn’t like anything brushing up on the top of it. So wearing shoes is out of the question. If the swelling doesn’t improve by tomorrow, I will go for an x-ray. I still think that there is some deep bruising that didn’t be ome apparent until I worked 3 days in a row. I am still keeping that appointment for Thursday though.

Still summer here but not quite as hot.

Testing out Delina for about the 3rd-4th time. I have narrowed down my rose perfume contenders to this and Byredo Young Rose. The Young Rose ends up more like a skin scent, probably more wearable but I have a lot of those type of scents so maybe Delina is more unique.

I ordered some Serge Lutens samples. I wish the fragrances were available here to test out. Most are way too expensive to blind buy. I ordered Fille en Aiguilles and Ambre Sultan.

Do you think the tariffs are making a big difference in perfume costs? The niche prices are high as it is, haven’t noticed any huge jumps. And “American” brands seem to be no less costly.

I’m still feeling a bit crook but we drove over the hill yesterday, past paddocks bursting with bright, white lambs to the beach. It was a warm, sunny day and low-tide so we meandered along the foreshore, and through a big cave to a sheltered beach. Was joined, unexpectedly, by a young sea lion , that came up out of the surf and then chased us from our spot. Lots of swallows darting in and out of the sea cliffs. The beach is called Doctors Point, and it certainly felt healing. Wearing A La Nuit today.

    Happy Sunday NST!

Sotd PG Indochine from a generous NSTer! Lovely but no sillage on me. Have applied 2x in 3 hrs. Have not applied Bumbum crème on top.

Speaking of Bumbum crème 😆, my new container inspired me to get out my Megababe Le Tush masque. I forgot how totally adorable the packaging is. So I used it first on my Le Tush following up with Le Bumbum! It’s always delightful when a product actually outperforms. I had forgotten what terrific products they both are.

Brandt London Fog review from yesterday: pleasant, forgettable, weak tea, no sillage or zing. I used up the whole sample trying to get it to make a fragrant statement to no avail. A very disappointed plink last night.

Thank you to all for the excellent ideas about both my questions! I appreciate y’all taking time to answer both thoughtfully and thoroughly!

Received an email from Deva today. Though her health issues have gotten better for the most part, she has no interest in perfume. She doesn’t see herself coming back to this site. She and T-Rex are on a new mission. She left the Midwest campground and took another nursing job in a small hospital. It has a nice winter climate and she will be there through Christmas. She said to wish everyone well and enjoy your perfumes!

I’m in Hiram Green Shangri-la today, as I wasn’t sure if I’d have to sit through an “open rehearsal” at Ockeghem Teen’s orchestra retreat. No other parents seemed to be there, so I’ve been spared, but now I’m marooned a bridge away from home, and I’m not feeling like braving the bridge traffic three times more, so I’m just trying to kill time in cafes.

I haven’t been able to keep up much here anymore, but has anyone smelled the new Tauer LAdDM Noir? I finally bit the bullet and paid twice the cost of the sample in shipping to get it sent from Luckyscent, and it made it to customs before Canada Post went on a surprise strike on Thursday. I was hoping to smell it before Mr. Ockeghem comes home from Europe, so if I liked it he could get it there since Tauer doesn’t ship to Canada, but…who knows when I’ll get it now. Strikes are all the fashion these days — postal workers, liquor store workers, and the orchestra are all on strike in my city right now, sigh.

Finally got all the houseplants inside today; it’s amazing how much they grow in the summer outside! Mr. Laila complained that the room was now too crowded- uh, the plants have been in their places for years and years but the 4 guitars and 5 guitar cases that now also occupy the room have not.🙄. Cats’ toys are also back in place in the room where last week’s party was held and they are thrilled. They actually played with them for a change!

Another summer-like day today and I’ve been enjoying the black currant in philosophy’s Unconditional Love as my SOTD. Getting ready for pork chops on the grill and the finale of Professor T on PBS.

    Happy Sunday evening! 🪴

Hey all! I “plinked,” as LesLiesse would say, a sample of Olibanum, which I think is from Profumum Roma. I really like this one! If I didn’t already have L’Orpheline I’d consider getting it, since I prefer my incense light and airy.

We’ve been having such nice weather here, extending the growing season, so I’m really pleased that I’m still getting some tomatoes and my green beans are finally producing little beans! Hope y’all had a nice weekend :).

Gorgeous sunny fall day here. Working on my work project which seems chaotic-like herding cats, as the saying goes 🙂 Wearing Bigarade Concentree, both the lotion bd the EDP. I do love this scent. I knew the next two weeks would be chaotic so I ordered some Dammann tea, and it just arrived. o Tea is their superb Tea Vert Au Jasmin-it reminds me of A La Nuit, and its gorgeous. It’s been a favourite tea for 20 years.

Hope everyone’s day is only minimally chaotic 🙂

    Happy Monday!

PLINK WEEK begins. Sotd FM Iris Poudre, my first decant from a generous NSTer! Now I have a FB, I feel I can finally use this up as I have been most stingy with spraying to make it last and last (which is the opposite of basking and basking).

This afternoon after showering from gym, I’m switching to a layer of Bumbum crème with PG Indochine in top to see if I can get more sillage. (And no I will not be spraying the glorious Indochine on Le Tush 😆)

A swell day (as inspired by Daniel’s comment) to all!

Spritzed Cedre Sambac on my wrists from a spray sample, and now I can’t stop doing the perfumista salute! I’m huffing my wrists non-stop. 😊

It’s interesting how noses change. First time I tried this scent (a couple years ago) it was ok but not a favorite. I almost wore Ambre Narguile today, then my hand wandered over to Cedre Sambac. I’m so glad.

Happy National Coffee Day! As a coffee lover, I celebrate this day every day, couldn’t be w/o my morning Java. Nothing complicated, just fresh ground beans, black and strong and numerous cups!

To further celebrate this day, though, I’m wearing BBW’s Fresh Vanilla edt from years back layered over the Vanilla Mocha Cafe body products. The Fresh Vanilla is warm and a bit caramelly, so I smell like a Cappuccino, yum!

Another beautiful summer 🌞 day here but w/o the yucky humidity. Although I’m ready for cooler temps, I’m grateful for much that this warm stretch brings: a longer growing season for our veggies, can still dry laundry outside, our solar panels are very happy, and looks like no need to turn on the heat for awhile yet. 🙏

Happy Monday and a great week ahead! ☕️

Thank you! No I don’t remember the bacon & egg alarm clock post; I’ll definitely stick with a coffee wakeup routine aroma. Had it been cooler, I would’ve worn Black Opium over the Vanilla Cafe I bought last week with its espresso & hazelnut notes, but not on an 87 degree day, the lighter cappuccino seemed more appropriate.

My back is feeling much better after a weekend of rest and Advil. Felt well enough to do a big load of laundry yesterday. I think I overdid a workout sometime last week. 😒

SOTD = ELdO Attaquer le Soleil Marquis de Sade, from The Sample Stash. Supposedly this is just labdanum. On me, it has smoke, incense, and a hint of pine needles. Nice nicer than the name suggests.

That should be “Much nicer than the name suggests.” ⬆️

Glad your back is better! Your scent sounds wonderful, has all the notes I enjoy – when and if we ever get cooler weather!

It’s worth sampling. But not sure it’s full bottle worthy.

Cooler weather is headed here in a few days. Maybe it will head your way after that?

Wearing Mercedes-Benz Club Black. While I am certainly terrible with blind buys – most went on to Goodwill – this has to be one of the best blind buys I ever made, it was so inexpensive and the description sounded so good, I decided to take the risk. It is very much like G&B Silky Woods, a sueded vanilla. The bottle looks very ridiculous, a plastic tower and maybe does look like a car part.

Yay for a successful blind buy!
