Thursday scent of the day 9/25

Posted by Robin on 25 September 2025 118 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy National Comic Book Day! Birthdays: William Faulkner, Donald Glover, Glenn Gould, Pedro Almodóvar. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am still sick and slept terribly late...apologies to the early birds who went looking for the daily poll! Thankfully I have not (knock on wood) lost my sense of smell but I still have no desire to wear perfume. And, still way behind on comments and losing ground daily. I will catch up eventually.

Reminder: 9/26 is the first Friday in Autumn (unless you're in the Southern Hemisphere, in which case you know what to do). Wear something to celebrate the new season.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
Feel better soon Robin! I still don’t have my voice but I feel functional already. This bug that we’ve got is strong!
Sotd is Shalimar the OG, layered over the body lotion.
Temperature finally cooled a bit to 80 today. Hope it stays that way and no more heatwaves please. Excuse for iced drinks and ice cream is nice but I can really do without the sweating or clammy skin!

I am incredibly sick — really barely functional. I still assume I have covid although have not tested positive, will do my last test today and then giving up.

What do you think you have?

I think I have the flu. Must’ve caught it from my trip to the mall this past weekend. I tested for covid but was luckily negative. I was so close to having a fever on the first night too. Ew.

Pardon my Mama Bear Mode here, but whatever you have Dear Robin has been persistent and unrelenting. Have you tried:

        – 24/7 Nurse line, if your health care provider has one ?
        – emailing your PCP ?
        – going to Urgent Care (what we call the group that is one step below the ER)?

We all want to you to turn the corner and start feeling better! And if I’m overstepping, please excuse me!

Oh, no worries, you’re not overstepping! But I am not worried, I really think it is covid, I know lots of people with covid around here, and for day 7 or 8 (depends how I count) I don’t think this level of exhaustion is unusual, in fact it’s not all that different than last time I had covid.

My other symptoms (sore throat, headache, etc) are all better. If my sore throat had persisted I would have gone to urgent care for a strep test.

There are OTC flu A, B and Covid tests all in one you can get a local retail pharmacies and Amazon now too and you may already be well aware. Hope you feel better soon and get lots of rest, Robin! 🤗

Yes, used those tests for first 5 days, now using the cheaper test for covid only since I know some people don’t test positive until day 7 or 8. I will test one more time tomorrow then give up, I think I have covid regardless, and it has been shown that you can have covid (and indeed feel quite sick) and not be shedding enough virus in your upper respiratory tract to test positive on antigen or PCR.

The only reason I really want to know so badly is to time my next vaccine booster.

I love the picture you chose, Robin, and I hope you feel better soon.

My SOTD is Mure at Musc extreme body wash, then some SL Clair de Musc. All those muscs must mix well cause I feel like I smell great.

Just came from my hand physio, cause I broke my hand last year. My grip strength has improved-there was a 30 lb difference between my hands-now they’re equal. Other parts of it healing nicely. All you medical professionals-thank you for being so good at your jobs. We patients appreciate you so much.

Not so bad-and I was motivated to do it, to try and get my dominant hand back to normal. I’m vain about my hands and my teeth-I want my teeth to last my lifetime, if possible, and I enjoy a good manicure. Seeing my finger all twisted made me sad and there was a constant feeling of tension going from the middle finger up into my shoulder. I’ll exercise it, if there’s a possibility of feeling better.

Feel better soon to those that are battling illness.

SOTD is Shalimar-Jasmine with BBW Vanilla Bean body cream. A little much for our warm weather probably, but that’s okay. The jasmine has really gotten stronger over the year. Not sure it’s strong enough for Allo yet😂

The jasmine intensifies!? Need to dig out my bottle and spray some. I remembered it being rather tame so I pushed it aside, poor bottle.

    Feel better soon Robin!!

A foggy drizzly day like this calls for Coromandel. I’ve been waiting for the fall weather to kick in to enjoy this beauty. Delicious and enveloping as always!

I got some samples of Les Indemodables recent offerings, Immortelle Soliel and Patchouli Noisette from lucky scent. I tried a dab of each and Immortelle Soliel is catching my attention. Patchouli Noisette is mostly giving me ambery woods in the drydown, which wasn’t very exciting.

Sorry to hear that the sickness is lingering — no need to catch up on comments, Robin. We’ll all be here once you’re feeling better.

Bulgari Black for me today — definitely a fall fragrance for me. I will put on some Glenn Gould now, to drown out the plunking piano in the high school choir portable under my office window. And Almodovar! I watched “The Room Next Door” on the flight home earlier this month. I love his movies.

We’re having a last hurrah of lovely weather here, and some much needed rain is coming next week. My SOTD bridges the gap nicely — thanks to jepster (and my lack of self-control) I’m in a healthy spritzing of Ineke Idyllwild. A very successful blind buy, and many thanks to jepster for the suggestion!

Yes! I’ve found lots of them that I either like or love, but none is quite the “ideal forest” that I’m hoping for. Forest Walk was very close, but there’s something acrid and burnt-smelling (on me) in Sonoma Scent Studio’s base. And there are still lots of candidates to explore.

Sotd Imaginary Authors O Unknown. Another bottle thunk! I will miss it.

I was woke up around 1am by incredible loud noises from the fire department knocking down the door of my neighbor next door. He is a nice man in his late 60s, living alone and with health issues. His sister had been trying to reach him for the past 2 days without any response. He was found on the kitchen floor, very confused and unable to move. What a stressful situation. He was taken to the hospital and I hope he recovers soon.
I could barely sleep after that, so coffee and more coffee is needed today to survive the day at work.

Sorry to hear you are still not feeling well, Robin. I hope tomorrow is a better day!

What did you think of O Unknown? I thought it was mediocre at best. So many other iris scents that I found to be better. Of course, just my opinion.

Definitely it is not the best iris scent, but I found the combination of orris and black tea very comforting. I used to reach for it on days when I needed a warm, cozy feeling from the orris note.

For some reason, tea in perfume doesn’t always agree with my skin. That may have been the issue.

Like Robin ( get well) I’ve been sick with influenza A the past week and it’s knocked me out energy-wise. But spring has arrived, and yesterday the first Royal Southern Albatross ( Toroa) of the season returned to shore . They have a colony at the entrance to our harbour, one of a very few in the world ( the rest are in the sub-Antarctic islands). So, to honour the albatross I’m wearing a perfume that smells like regurgitated fish…not! No, wearing Journey, because if there’s one thing these birds do well it’s flying , and crossing oceans.

… from a travel spray and IIRC a swap! So good, perfect transitional weather scent although it feels hot and humid (NO, not THAT kind of hot and humid but still). I should wear this more often.

In other news, I have been wondering about how much I can spend without really thinking too much. A recent article (sorry, no links!) mentioned using 0.01% and yes, the zeroes, the decimal and the % are correct. A follow up article asked a few random people what their “wouldn’t think about it amount”. The responses ranged from a cup of coffee (~ $3 per cup so 20 x $3 = $60) to $170 per month, although it is not clear where this amount came from. For me, it is definitely higher but I need to know when to stop because given this restriction, I may not know when to stop! What is your threshold?

0.01% of what? Your yearly income? Your net worth?

I should have qualified – “liquid assets” which, in simple summary, I take it to mean total assets minus real estate minus life insurance, then I took 25% off for taxes.

Interesting. This is not how I think about money and what I can “afford” at all.

Here is an unpaywalled version of the original WSJ article if anyone wants to see it:

Back in college, I tracked my expenses down to each cent. It was the only way I could afford things. I learned the hard way that $5 here and there could blow the budget. Mindful spending is the way to go for me.

Thank you hajusuuri and Robin – I heard this same theory in passing, did not catch the source, and wondered about it. I will check out this article and get the ever-frugal Mr. Mossy’s thoughts. I lean toward the Jalapeno theory and I balance my checkbook to the penny, but then there’s perfume…

LOL 😆! I think perfume should be in its own separate non-budgetable category.

Bear in mind that it is not really intended to help you save money…if you do lots of background reading, it originated as a way for wealthy people who were loath to spend money on luxury items to “let go” of that stress and just buy. So the idea was if you can easily afford a $40 bottle of wine, it’s silly to stress over it, just buy it.

Since I am not wealthy and I have no trouble wasting money, it is not for me.

I hope Robin and others are feeling better soon, colds and flu are no fun – we tend to think of colds a minor, but they can make you quite unwell for a couple of weeks.
My mother is back and getting back to her usual routines, she’s getting used to using a walker around the house, which is giving her a lot more confidence.
    I’m wearing Tobacco Vanille.

You smell wonderful. Like many, I would have loved a special edition “original” Shalimar. But I am a fan of Delphine Jelk’s style and I think she hit the nail on the head with L’Essence.

Rest, Robin, rest. It’s the best thing you can do for yourself. 🤗

Looks like today is the last of our cool-ish fall days with near-normal temps in the mid-70’s before summer warmth and temps in the80’s return. A nice scent for today, an autumn favorite of mine with its honey and woody notes, is the original EL Sensuous edp. Looks like after another wearing or two, the bottle is ready for thunking.

We’re headed out for a special evening sponsored by our local PBS station, an in-person event featuring film-maker Ken Burns, who will be giving us a preview of his upcoming 6-part, 12-hour film, The American Revolution. We’re big fans of his, so we’re really looking forward to this!

    Happy Almost-Friday! 🍂🍁

    Song of the Day: https://youtu.be/Im3JzxlatUs?list=RDIm3JzxlatUs

Today is also “One Hit Wonder” Day. That designation applies to a band or artist that has had only one of their songs hit the US Top 40. Hearing lots of my favorite songs on the radio! 😍🤩

A perfect “bluebird skies” day here, as madtowngirl would say. Temps are right around 80 again, with a dusting of snow upon the highest mountain peaks. Got more of the same for at least the next week.

My brother is still slogging thru the application process for the job he interviewed about a while back. It’s been a frustrating and disorienting experience for him. But we think things are progressing in the right direction.

SOTD = still in Rose Anonyme.

Stopping by late to waft some Cruel Gardenia. I’m not a fan of the name. I smell aldehydes, but the Fragrantica note list suggests neroli leads the parade. My love is the violet note holding its own with peach and white florals. It does not project much but smells wonderful on clothes the next day.
