Tuesday scent of the day 9/16

Posted by Robin on 16 September 2025 152 Comments

It’s Tuesday, the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer and B.B. King’s birthday. Update: RIP Robert Redford. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in a dab of Guerlain Vetiver. Tea at the moment is Art of Tea Rose Black.

Reminder: 9/19 is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Get as creative as you like with the theme! Wear a fragrance inspired by a pirate or piracy, wear something you bought so cheap it was a steal, steal an idea from someone else, whatever!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Camille Pale Jade Teapot by Aynsley ("Crafted from fine china, this set features a sleek, modern shape adorned with a stunning pale jade colour and delicately painted flowers") is £35 at Belleek.

Sotd Gucci Envy. Less than 1ml in my old full bottle. I might thunk it this week.

Early start of the day today. I arrived in the office at 6am. It was still dark outside, but we have a deadline for one of our projects this week and want to finish it before Friday.

On my second cup of coffee and a slice of apple bacon bread from the farmer’s market. Delicious!
    Happy Tuesday! ☕️

I like to start early, because with very few people around at that time I can focus better. I don’t know yet at what time I will leave. Coffee to the rescue!
I am really enjoying the breads. They are delish!

I love your SOTD so much-I bought and re bought Envy, and my friends gave it to me for Christmas. I bought one box when I saw it at Shoppers, super inexpensive-but my mom needed an emergency gift so I gave it to her. Regret, big time 🙂

Had a doctor’s appointment in the morning, so I decided to wear something discreet: Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt, with the sea as my connection to the pirate theme.

Back home in the afternoon – Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours, chosen for its rum note.

    Sea and rum, mateys!

Jalapeno, you asked about my Friday visit to the doctor. It’s nothing too serious – just chronic joint pain from an old injury. It bothers me from time to time. I’m following the treatment plan he gave me on Friday, and today he also gave me a shot. So now I’m resting after the injection.

    Hello.
Sotd is TF Soleil Neige, only because it’s the first bottle I saw today. It’s been a while since I had been this random with my sotd, I usually think for a little bit.
BBW will have a birthday collection for its 35th this year. It’s birthday cake scented. I am more excited about this than the usual fall stuff! https://www.bbwinc.com/media/stories/the-sweetest-collab-of-the-year-bath-body-works-milk-bar-debut-birthday-cake-fragrance

Yesterday and today have been absolutely perfect mornings. 62 degrees and sunny when I stepped out of the house. I wish this weather would never leave.
I broke my no buy recently and bought a travel spray of Anthropologie’s store brand Pilcro’s Barely There, which was as the name suggests barely there. A more watered down version of Not a Perfume, but I am a sucker for a good skin scent. Anyway, it is my sotd and I thunked it this morning.

I’m in a generous amount of Galop. I had one of those mornings when I couldn’t get out of my own way-so I stood there, and felt the nice bottle in my hand, and thought about what to wear and what I had t do for the day. And I just pressed the spray button absent mindedly over and over and over again. The scent of the quince brought me back to reality lol.

Might watch Out of Africa tonight-I love that movie and I’m sorry Robert Redford has died.

Today I had a desperate need for a big slug of oakmoss so I’m in Jacomo Parfum Rare, one of those ’80s kitchen-sink floral/oriental/chypre fragrances. Really dark and sophisticated. I have a line on a quarter ounce of the extrait and I am severely tempted to order it, plus probably a few other vintage chypres while I’m at it.

    Happy Teapot Tuesday!

Tea is Assam tea from the office pantry. SOTD is Shalimar L’Essence. I’ve decided that it still doesn’t capture my heart but it is a very nice and easy vanillic amber. I did have a moment of “oh something smells nice here” followed by a “oh it’s me!” realization. That counts for something!

Ate a kiwi berry for the first time today. It’s like a tiny kiwi with a thicker, non-fuzzy skin. Very tart and juicy. I’ve never seen it at grocery stores but I would eat more if they were available!

    Gorgeous teapot!

My tea of the afternoon is MF Vert Provence with some MF Sweet Shanghai.

SOTD is a very old sample of Ormonde Jayne Tiaré, which is distinctly unmemorable.
I finished it in one go. Mind you, I have had it for years so it might have list most of its oomph.

Sorry about Robert Redfotd, still 89 is a great age.

Ah, Robert Redford! What a life. What a giant. A terrific actor, who was also in some of my favorite films – The Sting, All The President’s Men, Three Days of the Condor, The Candidate… Environmentalist, champion of independent films, and a guy with more star power than just about anyone EVER.

His beauty was effortless, extraordinary, and, (to my generation,) iconic. I remember how people, when talking of a man’s looks, would say, “Well, he’s no Robert Redford.” He was IT. When paired with Paul Newman, their combined beauty was almost overwhelming.

I’m wearing an effortless beauty – Comête, from Chanel. Did anyone see Victoria’s review the other day on Bois de Jasmin? She articulated my feelings about it so well, and also made me think about the fragrance in a different way. How valuable high quality criticism can be!

Carole, yes, there’s a beautiful almond-y sweetness that I just love. I admit that the first time I tried it I thought, “Lovely, but not terribly exciting.” But it’s really grown on me, and I’m appreciating its charms more and more.

Yes, I saw Victoria’s review and felt it was quite accurate. I liked the scent very much, however, did not find it ground-breaking. I have Zara Romance d’Iris which is a cheap dupe to it. For me, that works. I do love many of the Exclusifs by Chanel and have a few.

RIP Robert Redford. What a full life!
I’m pondering the Pirate theme. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum. So any fragrance with a rum note would work. And those with a Caribbean theme. Creed’s Virgin Island Water and all the salty beachy fragrances like Lauder’s Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche and beachy and/or ozonic florals. Some of the Antonia’s Flowers qualify. Also Davidoff’s Cool Water for the name alone for Northern pirates.
Also, present-day Morocco was the base of the Barbary corsair pirates that raided the coasts and river towns of France, England, Italy, and Spain (mainly for slaves). A fascinating history of this recounted in White Gold by Giles Milton, about the 1 million Europeans captured and sold in these markets. (A relatively small number compared to enslaved Africans but this was all new to me). Anyway, so anything Moroccan (hello Uncle Serge) would work for the pirate theme. And Tauer’s L’Air du Desert Marocain and Au Coeur du Desert.
I’m opting for the rum note today in the sadly discontinued Comme des Garcons Sequoia in the “Red” series. (Notes are red rum, karo-karunde, oud, mahogany, redwood). With all those woody notes, it also makes me think of walking a (wood) plank.

I agree – great ideas! I also thought of rum (and tobacco, too), and I would definitely wear Creed’s Virgin Island Water this week if I still had it.

I did look up regions associated with pirates, and read a bit about Barbary pirates, but somehow did not make a connection with Morocco. Duh. Chergui should be perfect: tobacco + Morocco.

    Great teapot!
Sorry to read Robert Redford has passed. I used to buy the occasional thing from his overpriced but cutely curated Sundance catalog, but that website went bye bye sometime this last spring, so I figured he must be getting sick or something. He was a cutie-patootie back in the day. I liked the movies he made with Paul Newman, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Sting, and some of his wilderness movies, Jeremiah Johnson, and what not.
My SOTD = Killian’s Amber Oud, which I just read doesn’t actually have any oud in it! But it is a pretty fall gateway scent, rich but not too dense and heavy…
Afraid it has nothing to do with pirates, that I can think of, tho, so I am not CP compliant!

Redford sold the Sundance Catalog in 2004, and it just went into chap.7 bankruptcy this past year. It’s too bad, too, that catalog had the cutest stuff (too pricey for my wallet tho!).

I’ve found that MI is very temperature sensitive for me. In the warm, I get a lot of caramel and sweetness, and can barely detect the iris. I much prefer it when it’s cooler out.

Today it is Atelier Materi Santal Blond which I find ok but nothing fantastic and the sample will go into my alphabetized sample bin.

Weird, I feel so much better on my time off, I think because I get sleep every night and I eat better. Having some marinated collard greens salad for lunch.

RIP Robert Redford. I very much admire people who can be great in one aspect of their field and then transition to some other role – and still be great.

Movie was excellent. I cried at the end (the only one in the theater I think) because I remembered when Mom threw a premiere party for the first episode. Just she and me are left. Happy for the memories. (As Colin Hughes would counsel Richard Montlaur on Ted Lasso!)

Very much. After seeing the trailer I want to see the satire called Fackham Hall. The red band trailer appeared exclusively at Spinal Tap The Ens Continues showings. I couldn’t find one to post or I would.

        I love the news Shalimar!

My mom was such a huge Robert Redford fan. Great actor, and so handsome. We recently watched the Natural (we sometimes go on sports movie binges during the different sports seasons). No perfume today; feeling vaguely yucky after a difficult weekend and probably slightly tired after my double-red blood donation yesterday. I can’t really think of anything pirate-y, but I still have a few days.

Wearing Chanel Paris-Riviera. I definitely oversprayed myself and clothes. I like the scurvy prevention aspect, thanks to SheriG mentioning this!

I was saddened to hear about Robert Redford. I know as kids, we saw alot of his movies in theaters. Plus he seemed larger than life.

Zara Vapeur Blanche for me today — in the “so cheap it’s a steal” category, with cheap Olivia Giacobetti. May end up in Zara most of the week. I got it because it was cheap and wasn’t that taken with it when it first arrived, but the few times I’ve pulled it out lately, I’ve liked it more.

No scent today–flu shot instead! My one and only encounter with Robert Redford was a French bakery on the upper East Side of Manhattan in the early 80’s. I think he lived in the neighborhood. I would stop in occasionally for a croissant. That particular day, we were the only two customers in there…he arrived just before me. So in typical New York fashion, I gave a little nod to indicate that he should order first. With that big, beautiful grin, he said “you go, I’m still looking” And I thought to myself, so am I, Mr. Redford, so am I !! Got my croissant and left….with stars in my eyes.

Oy! Glad you are feeling better.

Coincidentally, I just read a Dear Abby article (which I hardly ever do) about how a person keeps getting sick due to having to now go into the office 4x per week. The answer: ask the manager to let everyone know that if they are sick, do not go into the office! Makes sense but how many people do that?

    SOTD = Hermes Galop

SAY YES TO HERMES ™️ by our very own tiffanie! I am pretty sure I have the refill bottle (because cheaper back then). More please!

I’m doing some “money” movements today: closing an account at HSBC and selling a mutual fund at Provident. Let’s talk HSBC – today is Tuesday, right? Right? I called to close my account because I have no need to have this account. After blah blah blah, I was told that the check will go out this Friday. What the —? It’s not like they have to sell anything! So because I wanted to get my $s, I said let me finish this transaction first before I ask HTH did they come up with mail only gets picked up once a week? The SA knew I would not let it go so she put me on hold. When she came back she said she was mistaken and that mail will be picked up daily. We’ll see…

In other news, I never knew there was a thing as cereal box records! This was from a while back (the records, as they are no longer being made). Here’s a gift article from The NY Times. Happy reading!

I work at a financial institution, and it is true that we have cut our mail / courier pickups. Because mail is handled from a central office at HQ, the branches have to send it in to HQ to be sent, and with COVID, so little mail these days, etc., we have cut our branch courier to a day or two a week.

This is not the U.S., of course, and we’re not as reliant on cheques. But yeah, mail and paper are anathema these days.

(We’re also A LOT smaller than HSBC. But they didn’t survive up here — recently pulled out of Canada.)

HSBC did not survive here either! In any case, I can understand the inability to send mail out everyday that the post office is open; however, does the company also wait one to two days a week to receive mail?

    Posting late today!

Back in the 1950’s, Robert Redford had a job at a dive bar/restaurant in Boulder, Colorado, called The Sink. I was at The Sink once in the early 1990’s. IIRC the burgers and pizza were pretty good there.

Changeable skies here. Had at least one round of rain this afternoon.

Got more good news yesterday after I posted. My brother called me while he was at work, which is highly unusual. First he asked a couple of questions about PDFs. Then he told me that he got an offer letter from the company he interviewed with last month! Exciting times.

SOTD = commando, but wearing Josie Maran Vanilla Vibezzz body butter in the usual spots. And wearing Vacation Classic Whip SPF30 Sunscreen Mousse on my arms.
