Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-September 2025

Posted by Robin on 13 September 2025 277 Comments

PSA: our next swapmeet will start on Saturday, 20 September.

We're marking the last days (weeks? maybe?) of summer with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the vintage perfume you've been thinking you really ought to smell, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

I woke up to a light veil of fog outside and a rare (for me) wish to smell of roses. So I’m in Myrrhe Églantine and enjoying its development from fresh, citrusy rose to faintly incensy rose. And speaking thereof, my Hot Cocoa rose finally woke up and started producing blooms. It began while we were “enjoying” temperatures near 100f, so now I’m thinking it has “hot” in its name for a reason. Will have to remember that for next year, and maybe not swear at it quite so much.

Me too! Maybe it just needed all that heat and time to settle in. Or it was the swearing. Or the squirrel poop — there’s one who is trying hard to disturb every cubic centimeter of dirt in my back yard, including those in pots!

Was going to wear Escada Casual Friday yesterday — I rarely think to wear except on Fridays, which is ridiculous of me — but it wouldn’t have fit the community theme so I’m wearing it today. It’s a terrific spicy-woody floral, much better than Givenchy Insensé (probably the most lauded of the era’s florals for men), so of course it had to be discontinued.

Wearing Casual Friday on a Saturday seems like the best of both worlds to me. I’m a bit torn about going with a title or not. One of my adored fragrances is Abel’s Laundry Day, which I stubbornly refuse to wear when the wash is calling my name.

        Kris,
She puts out a lot of fragrances! Sometimes it overwhelms me at once.
I do find a lot to love there as I love resins and spices and she has that well covered. Also, the range of sizes one can get makes it not outrageous.

    Happy Saturday!

Sotd- Zara Gourmand Coffee, since I only got a 1/2 yesterday. Basking and basking! Thanks again happy888cat!

Back to National Day of Encouragement. Another fragrance site wrote up Shalimar L’Essence today. I was going to comment about how much I loved it but the last time I did post in order to ask a question, a troll insulted my (apparently low) IQ. Not even a comment he disagreed with, but a question. I’ve been thinking about civility a lot this week, and I’m grateful to be part of a worldwide community that is part of the solution, part of the answer to the famous question, “Can we all get along?” Here at NST, the answer is a deeply felt YES!

Now I’m going to go recover from my exhausting exercise echocardiogram yesterday with its 24h caffeine moratorium by drinking tons of glorious coffee and smelling like it too 😆 !

Fragrance lovers are a passionate bunch and no two noses are alike.

I had a very dear friend who died at 33 in 1994 from AIDS.

I still have a tiny bottle of his Grey Flannel and his very important advice.

“Take what you like and leave the rest.”

And because the Egyptians used resins, oils and spices as they prepared their dead for the next journey, this is 100% perfect.
Shalimar, even better, since it honors Mumtaz Mahal.

Covet today. This is one of those fragrances I go back and forth on, but today it’s a win. Sadly, I can’t find that plastic flower cap for my bottle. So cheesy, but I love it.

Just had one of my favorite breakfasts: tomato toast with olive oil and garlic (pan con tomate, which I learned about on a trip to Spain several years ago) with my homegrown tomatoes and garlic. So delicious. My tomatoes always seem to all ripen in Sept no matter which type I plant. Also getting ready for final camping trip this next week. The weather looks like it will be good.

    Have a great weekend, all.

It’s very simple and I love it. Here are the steps:
        1) Cut your tomatoes in half and grate the cut end on the large sized holes of a grater. The skin magically doesn’t grate so you just get the meat of the tomato and you are left holding the skin. (A meatier type like those for sauce works best, but I’ve used all kinds.)
        2) Toast your bread – I used a whole grain French loaf.
        3) Cut a clove of fresh garlic in half and rub on the toasted bread while it is still warm.
        4) Spritz or dribble a little olive oil on the toast.
        5) Spread on your tomato “meat” and sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper and/or Italian herbs if you want.
        Eat and enjoy!

Yesterday I was out to dinner and a couple walked in and all I could smell was this cloud of sweet lemon/vanilla fluffy goodness… when we were wrapping up our bill and getting ready to leave, they had a chat with us about how we liked the food and that’s when I asked the wife what perfume was she wearing, and it was the new Shalimar.

No citrus or bergamot in this version of Shalimar, but I thought this afternoon that I maybe smelled a little lemon. I just know it was not listed in the notes.

Sounds like the Shalimar on her almost turned gourmand! On me the bergamot burns off fast and it’s mostly the delectable vanilla that’s left.

lemon and vanilla reminded me that I saw a window for Akro’s Bake at Bloomingdales yesterday. Still haven’t sniffed that one but I think it might be time to soon.

Here’s something I like to ask for help with every now and then. I absolutely loved the old Pantene shampoo fragrance – early 80s before they were bought by Proctor & Gamble. I know that is many years ago. If any of you remember it, please let me know if you have any recommendations for similar fragrances. I’d love to find one. Someone on fragrantica mentioned that they thought Guerlain Champs Elysees EDT smelled a bit like the old Pantene, but I don’t know if they meant current day Champs Elysees or vintage. And I’ve never smelled it so no idea myself.

I can’t help you but as a fan of old Wella Balsam, Flex and the original Herbal Essence shampoos, I can relate. I actually bought an old Wella Balsam once years ago just for old time’s sake. It still smelled good. Everything is available on the evilbay and other sites at inflated prices, of course.

Oh yes … and maybe I’ve started on the Talk Like a Pirate CP? Love it! My FB is still full so many many wears left!

For adanst — I ended up not doing a side x side for Shalimar L’Essence and MVP. They are different with L’Essence smelling more concentrated and richer while MVP is more complex and diffusive. If you’re like me, I would get both. 😇

I started to read through some of the retirement programs which had updated terms. I read the one for 401(k) and could actually withdraw with no penalty. I have to understand a little better though as to what the balance would be – does it change (other than for withdrawn amount) or will it stay the same on the day after I submit my request? Anyway, no issues regardless but I do need to figure out if and how I can split up the pre-tax, post-tax and Roth. I also have a retirement plan which I need to tend to as well but the document is a little bit thicker …

    Have a great weekend!

I can still smell last night’s perfume on my clothes – SL’s Écrin de Fumée. Post-shower, I’m thinking about something floral to encourage the sun to come out, maybe L’Âme Perdue.
We’ve got to go to the supermarket this morning. That was supposed to be yesterday but the car’s battery was flat – we don’t use the car a lot, so we have frequent battery problems. We’ve got an awesome little battery pack that can start the car (battery technology has come a long way), but we forgot to recharge it!

Wearing Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady.

I am having coffee with a slice a zucchini bread and feta cheese. The farmers market had a great variety of bread early this morning, so I bought enough to last me for the next two weeks. Bread is something that I cannot live without and I consume it daily. Fall is my favorite time of the year because of the seasonal flavors. The fig apple bread is one of my favorites. I might grab more next weekend.

I’m in Dune, which seemed appropriate for this transitional weather. We had major thunder and rain overnight, woke me out of a sound sleep. The rain brought the humidity back and we turned our ac back on this morning. I’m glad we did because it’s muggy out!

The house smells like banana cake. It’s my daughter’s annual request. Tomorrow I’ll put the chocolate frosting on. Twenty candles, hopefully the smoke alarm doesn’t go off.😅

Wow, we had several incredible downpours this morning, complete with lots of thunder and lightening that drove all 3 😻😽😸under the bed! Luckily it cleared up in time for our historical society’s annual cemetery walk, a fun event featuring some of our local HS history and theater students portraying some of our town’s most famous residents buried there. Turned out to be warm and sunny 🌞 and breezy as we volunteered and led several tours.

Didn’t wear any fragrance earlier since it’s mosquito season out there but now I’m enjoying the soft sandalwood of YR Ode of Reve, with just a touch of vanilla and incense and a jasmine note making it a light, calming, soothing scent. Definitely a ‘blue,’ scent, the color of the bottle.

    Happy Saturday to all!

Yesterday I waited on a woman who said she had worked with me at my old store of employment. It took me a second to remember and I said Yes! You wore LouLou! It was her signature. You couldn’t buy it here and she had purchased it in some larger city. I was so jealous. Anyway we talked about old times ( over 30 years ago!) and told each other how great we still looked. I held up my line a bit too long but I didn’t care. It was nice.
Today I am wearing TF Fleur de Chine.

I’ve been somewhat bogged down in some writing projects plus my Korean class homework and preparing a presentation for Monday night’s class…. It’s a bit absurd that I taught for 40 years and am nervous about a 10-minute presentation to a non-credit course, but there you go! (It’s in English, fortunately! Anyway our summer weather continues unabated, highs in the 90s and humid, ugh. I wore Zoologist Camel today, somewhat hurrying Fall to come along… with its nice spices and fruits plus miscellaneous other notes (like myrrh) it was very pleasant and not too heavy. Hope everyone else is doing all right these days, when the general atmosphere of the world and nation seem so tense and depressing.

I had been thinking if I should start learning Korean since I already know some Japanese (I passed JLPT N1, meaning I can get by daily life in Japan) and I heard that their grammar is very similar, plus the Korean writing system is much easier. Do you have your lessons 1-on-1 or is it a large class?

Sotd is Amouage Dia 40. Floral aldehyde heaven. I love it.
Dad’s cake was a success! He had 2 large servings so I was very happy. (So did I, but that’s expected given my sweet tooth.)
I can’t wait for summer to be over because I had a few cases of heatstroke already. The weather is still blisteringly hot so I am guessing fall won’t be here until October.

Dia and 40 smell quite similar but I’d say 40 is ever so slightly more floral and polished. The sillage is also a little stronger. However if you already have the original, you won’t need 40.

    An early happy Sunday!

Going to see the SpinalbTap sequel and trying to figure out which fragrance to wear. The obvious one is Lake & Skye 11 11, but I don’t have any and no Ulta’s nearby. Are there any Stonehenge scents? If we really like it we may go see it a second time on the big screen so any creative ideas will be appreciated.

I would say an over-the-top “rockstar” scent with lots of sillage should work. Remember that Spinal Tap is “one of England’s loudest bands”. But it might be too much for a public space.

Also, what about a black/noir scent with a leather note?
“The way they dress, the leather.” Also, remember their infamous “Smell the glove” cover? “How much more black could this be?” and the answer is: “None, none… more black.”

Anyway, whatever you wear, I hope you enjoy the show! I enjoyed both the original movie and their “Retrun of Spinal Tap” concert, but have not seen the sequel yet.

Glannys, thank you for the insightful reply!

Since none of my bottles seemed right, I went to my samples and pulled out IA’s The Cobra and the Canary! I had avoided it (especially after the Bull’s Blood scrubber debacle) because snakes – yechhhh 😡- but silly me it’s NOT a snake it’s the famous 1964 Shelby Cobra roadster from Carroll Shelby! And here’s the famous IA write-up: “their journey is a blur of seedy motels, cool swimming pools, hot debutantes, cocktails, and cigarette smoke.” Now that sounds like a rock and roll tour to me! Thanks again Glannys!

I came across an interesting video about pirates – “Historian Answers Pirate Questions” while looking for ideas for the next week CP (or should I say YouTube scarily recommended it to me). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IuezELhnLs&t=604s

No perfume yet as I am still in pajamas but I think it will be new Shalimar today. I haven’t fallen for it but I’ve also been too busy to sit and enjoy perfume, so that shall be my mission today 🙂

I also did a little perfume shelf organization and out away some perfume bottles for the swap. The longer I’ve had my collection the easier it’s been to understand which bottles I will never reach for (even if I do like the scent). Off to a better home they go!

My mom always was a pack rat and since she is visiting a friend, we are taking advantage and seeing what we can get cleaned and organized. I think in the next hour, he will call it quits for the day. I am going to finish some vacuuming and call it a day for cleaning. I think after my shower, Noontide Petals will do.

Celebrating a beautiful early fall day with NR Nina, a fruity-floral gourmand fragrance, apple-centric with some floral and woody notes, light and crisp and just a little sweet, like your favorite apple. I enjoy apple scents in early fall, and this one is nice on a rather warm day that actually feels more like summer. Nina actually fits this week’s piracy theme as a ‘steal,’ – I remember I paid $5 for it years ago at our local Jewel/Osco.

Treated us to breakfast at our favorite local diner and continued today’s apple theme with apple walnut crepes and bacon. Yum! 😋 Will be spending the rest of the day transitioning our home decor to early fall as well, but no pumpkins yet!

    Happy Sunday!🍎🍏

Interesting! Apparently the Jewel Food stores acquired Osco in the 1960’s, constructed many side-by-side businesses in the 60’s and 70’s, and then by the mid-80’s had consolidated both stores into one under one roof. I don’t think I ever knew Osco as a separate store.

Had more wild weather here yesterday, with several bouts of rain and thunderstorms. That’s all moved out overnight, and the reamining clouds have gradually burned off during the afternoon. Perfect temps in the low to mid 70’s now.

Watching (American) football while I multitask with chores. Finished a load of dishes earlier and now doing laundry. Been sorely tempted by the new Guerlain LPRN. But Teflon kitty has a vet appointment this week, so those funds will go to that.

I’m starting the CP with Francesca Bianchi Sex and the Sea Neroli – a scent for the pirate priestess (and so much more), Tia Dalma. Think salty, sweaty skin, the brightness of neroli and a swirl of deeply animalic notes.

For anyone curious, here’s the full list of notes:
Bergamot, petitgrain, honey, neroli, mimosa, coconut, immortelle, rose, iris, sandalwood, vetiver, labdanum, benzoin, ambergris, civet, vanilla.

Yes, I25 is less than beautiful. Take the old road from Fort Collins to Laramie, or if you really have time the even older road through Saratoga-much prettier drive! But you generally need a reason to drive into Wyoming beyond pretty scenery. A lot of nothing in all directions…

I am on “staycation”, trying to knock out some nagging tasks. I am wearing a sample of Reve D’Ossian by Oriza L Legrand for doing my mammogram and some household tasks. The bottle on this one looks so vintage though maybe the newer bottles no longer have the gold tassel. Incense is so calming for me but I am not sure this one would add a lot to my collection. Technically, I am not supposed to wear scents to the mammogram but I am a light applier and did not get any complaints.

But two called to me, so I have a spritz of VF on one wrist and au couer on the other. They blend nicely in a very Tauer-y manner. A little bit of these goes a long way for me. 🤭

Hope everyone had a super scented Monday. 🌸

Wearing a spray of Insolence edt over BBW Butterfly lotion. We’re back to (or still in) summer. It will be like this all week 🌞.

Like summer here all week, too, so much for the fall fragrances on my perfume tray.

Hello there NST! You all aren’t going to believe this, but today I *finally* found my misplaced Tauer samples! Also had several L’Artisan manufacturer samples hanging out with them, and some perfume mini bottles. It only took me 19 months, ha!

Now if only I can find those books of stamps I packed….

SOTD = still hanging out in Smell Bent TEN.

Oh fun!!! At least it wasn’t 19 years when they’re all spoiled past using 🙂

Now to see how many duplicate perfumes I have in the Tauer sample stash. 🤪😂

I think karma visited you today, because you suppressed your desire for that new Guerlain and put Teflon kitty’s needs first, the missing samples miraculously appeared!👍

Karma, or visualization. I’d been thinking a lot about finding those samples lately!

Another summery day here, so I’m sticking with another light fruity floral with an apple note, the original Burberry fragrance, sometimes called Burberry Classic or Burberry Woman, from the mid-90’s, one of the few scents that I used up and repurchased. I distinctly remember trying this one out in the mall one day; I wasn’t really into fragrances much then, and it appealed to me so much I bought it on the spot and still enjoy it albeit only occasionally since I have way too many others clamoring for attention!

Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead! It’s been a long day and I’m off to 😴 💤.
