The tenth edition of a poll about transitional fragrances: what are your favorite fragrances as summer turns to fall this year? What scent makes you happy as the nights get chilly and the days take on that crisp edge? And tell us what perfume you wish you owned for chilly weather.
(Or, if you’re like me, tell us what fragrances will allow you to hang on to that summer feeling just a little bit longer. And of course, if winter is turning to spring where you are, adjust the questions accordingly.)
Or, as always, talk about something else…

Ooh, double points for me — I’m in Gucci EDP, otherwise known here as “Gucci Brown”, which, as it happens, is one of my favorite fall fragrances. But my original thought when spraying it this morning was for scenting Fat Bottomed Girls, as suggested by lillyjo last week. My one remaining bottle of this is the squat, square one that takes both hands to spray and should really feature as the murder weapon in one of Angela Sanders’ novels (are you listening, Angie?). Hey, happy weekend everyone!
Smelling wonderful today SheriG!
I have the Gucci square bottle. It’s so heavy! It could definitely be used as a weapon.
Today I am wearing Infusion d’iris. It’s starting to turn to cooler temps and I did pull out some Shalimar.
You smell wonderful. Id’I is a cooling scent.
I’ll be back in Rumba to go for a walk and work on my DIY closet today.
I wish I hadn’t drained my bottle of Cuir Ottoman… it’s perfect for fall and winter. But I do have a sample of Cuir Beluga on the way, which I’ve never smelled. I’m afraid to love it 😆 $$$
The things we do for love ❤️
Getting dressed to go to girls lunch over at the beach where it will be a lovely mid 70s along the Pacific.
Chloe Cedrus for the day. It’s kind of perfect for Los Angeles fall weather.
I eagerly await a day for Chergui or Fumiere Turque.
Good Saturday to all!
Happy Saturday to you 🥰
Thank you!
Waves at you from the Gulf Coast! Hotter here, but a nice breeze and surf sounds make it worth while. I just think about being back in Indiana for the Winter if a sweat drop or a gnat offends. 😸
Waving back!
I’m wearing Stash which I like for fall, lotion and perfume. I have a hair mist somewhere but couldn’t put my hand on it this morning.
You smell great😸.
Thanks 😉 And it’s good to see you!
👋
Stash is so good. The only bottle I have drained.
Wearing Gucci Envy.
Plans to have early dinner out with my younger sister and my nephew today have been canceled. We are expecting severe weather in the next couple of hours with thunderstorms and heavy rain until tomorrow. Temps have warmed up since yesterday. It is 82 degrees right now, but it feel like 89. Muggy and uncomfortable. I will spend the weekend doing some clothes and shoes purging and have them picked up by the donation center next week. I will feel really good after having free space in my closet.
Happy weekend! 🌻
Yes I saw that. Be careful, pl67!
Thank you, Apsara! We will definitely stay home this weekend and gather together with my youngest sister in two weeks when she is finally back from her business trip.
Closet cleaning is like a therapy for me. I already have 2 bags ready to go and I am not finished yet!
I hope you can reschedule the dinner plans soon! I agree closet cleaning is great!
It sounds like a great day to stay inside and de-clutter.
Stay safe! You smell fantastic!
Thank you, Lillyjo! It is pretty bad outside right now. And I have made a big mess taking things out of the closet. Lol! I will straighten everything up before going to bed tonight! 😅
We had severe weather warnings too and it seemed to have passed us by…hope it did not hit you too hard!
The weather was severe for about two hours. I am glad we got that rain, because it had been very dry here for almost a month.
Same here, we probably did not get enough.
Severe weather sisters! It’s all thunder and heavy rain for the next 2-3 days. Glad I stocked up on groceries the day before so I can stay comfy at home.
Stay safe! It is still raining here, but it is supposed to stop sometime in the afternoon. The rest of the week will be beautiful with sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s.
No CP this week, though I needed to do last week’s. I’ve been away to the Florida Panhandle, sort of desert island-like, helping a friend get their beach house cleaned, stocked and ready for Winter guests and enjoying said beach house with family! I tried to keep up with comments, but we’ve been on the move quite a bit: missed you guys😸🏖️ and hope everyone is well. I’ll try and catch up on comments. I’ve been wearing Shalimar L’Essence and Millesime Tonka, and Comete. My sister brought Queen Latifa. Off to watch over the self-clean oven feature which makes me really nervous. 800 degrees?!! 😳
Heading home soon and sure did miss our cats, but our wonderful house sitter sends the best pictures!
Twins in Shalimar L’Essence!
Hi twin! We smell wonderful and I think this is an excellent addition to the Shalimar family.
🎉🎉🎉
800 degrees?! I get nervous at 425. Obviously my oven isn’t that clean. Lol.
Have a nice visit and safe travels.
I used to be too afraid to use my self-cleaning feature. But the harsh chemicals are no fun either. I just have to wait for a cool day so I can open a bunch of windows. I do wipe the oven down ahead of time with some mild soap water. There is something gratifying about opening up the oven at the end and seeing a nice clean oven with a tiny bit of ash.
That is how it worked out-I was startled how shiny and clean it was. I had fans going and windows open, as well as opening the adjacent drawers and cabinets. Glad that was over!
Triplets in L’Essence.
Happy happy happy triplet!
A repair person told us never to use the self cleaning feature on our oven because it’s often a source of oven failure. I haven’t quite still gotten over it, though I now set it for the lowest time.
That’s why I don’t use that feature on my 1960’s oven. I mitigate the use of icky chemicals by not cleaning it that often! 🤭
SotD is Dame BFMV. I was just reading fall polls from past years this morning, thinking about swapping my perfume tray out. I’ll dig out a couple more vanillas: Shalimar MVP and BeautyPie Vanilla Nue, Chanel Bois des Iles and Coromandel, and an Amber from BeautyPie.
We are having unseasonably cool weather here and I slept with smartwool socks on last night! We are supposed to warm up and be close to 80 again next weekend, just in time for madtownteen’s birthday.
I’m feeling somewhat lazy today and happy to just be home after last Saturday’s whirlwind less than 24 hour visit to mpls to get gradtowngirl settled into her new apartment. We did an ikea run and then worked in her apartment for hours cleaning, unpacking and setting up. I think it took me 3 days to recover and feel rested lol.
It’s 58 here and I am fighting to not turn the furnace on for a bit.
Enjoy your lazy weekend!
We put it on for a while this morning. Looks like next week it is going to be summer again.
Ooh yeah, that’s chilly. We made it to 62 here and today should be 64. Of course tomorrow when I’m back to work it’s back to the 70’s.😏
Ah… yes- I’m pulling out my BdI, Coromandel, and some Shalimar flankers, too! Plus I came across a bottle of the original Mona di Orio Vanille. That will be fun the cooler it gets.
Enjoy the cooler weather!
Thanks! It’s good sleeping weather.😅😉
Yay for Smartwool socks! Love them.
Happy weekend! We’ve woken up to another sunny morning. The weather here is usually disappointing, punctuated by an occasional nice day, but we’ve had a run of sunshine over the last couple of weeks with just a few wet days.
I’m celebrating in AG’s Le Chèvrefeuille.
Glad you have some good weather!
The perfect scent for it!
Happy Saturday!
Delighted, totally over the Moon to tell you I finally tracked down the Shalimar L’Essence, loved it, purchased it, and am now basking and basking!
Took me 4 different department stores until I found it at a branch of the same one my father purchased it at in 1956 in Pittsburgh, PA. I felt like he was with me as I was helped by a vivacious older sales associate named Gwen. So Old Schoool that she had printed business cards. A fun and satisfying experience!
Great story about finding a helpful and caring SA! I vote SL’E a winner and I’ve enjoyed my scent bubble, and the long drydown is pleasing, too. My sister gave herself a good spritzing of SL’E and she got great sillage. Here’s hoping the same sillage is happening for me and you.
The longer I wear it the more I like it!
I get good sillage too.
So glad you found it!
I was determined to exhaust my options! Ended up being a happy ending 😉
So happy for all of your fragrant basking!
With this sillage, I’ll be basking into bedtime! Thank you allo!
Today it was 28ºC with a humidex of 35ºC, which is appalling for September — we dashed out early to get groceries and then retreated to the AC — but then I remember that last year we had similar weather and even into October it would still exceed 20º, which in Atlantic Canada is not normal, or used to not be, anyway. Nowadays, who can even say what normal is?
I make less and less of a distinction between warm-weather and cold-weather scents these days, and today I’m wearing the creamy-smooth Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensée, which by rights is a November-December sort of scent, but I felt like it. I didn’t love it at first, but it’s really grown on me.
I wonder if I will ever get used to the new normal??
Stay cool, pyramus.
Ugh, sorry about the weather. Similar out here on the west coast, though with more smoke.
Commando today-
I would say Shalimar is a nice fall scent and Songes to hang on to summer!
Have you gotten a chance to try L’Essence yet?
🙂↔️ not yet
Am I missing out ?
Yes😉It is a very nice vanilla.
Today I am wearing Organza. I think it’s a good transitional perfume. It’s rich and deep smelling but without weight.
My Son and I were sent home early today because the store had gone over payroll budget for the week. I normally would be upset, but I think I am coming down with a cold. I’m just going to rest tonight.
I hope you get some good rest tonight and ward off that cold😊
Feel better soon!
Lillyjo, enjoy some well-deserved rest!
Feel better soon!
Hopefully the cold doesn’t linger. You smell wonderful in Organza.
I’m sorry Lillyjo, hope that cold will be mild. Lots of hot drinks with lemon meanwhile.
Hopefully you didn’t have a cold after all.
Inspired by SarahN, I’m in a few spritzes of Cuir Ottoman. It’s a great transitional fragrance.
I just rewatched Persolaise’s Top 10 Perfumes for Autumn 2024 and look forward to wearing some of them. When I watched it last Autumn, it pushed me over the perfume edge and I found a bottle of OJ Man at a good price. It’s such a good one for this transition.
From his list, I also have Parle Moi de Parfum Papyrus Oud, SL Fils de Joie, LL Patchouli 24 and of course, Shalimar!
🙂
Happy weekend!
Sotd is Guerlain Pêche Mirage. This is my probably 5 time trying it out. Still a no though. It starts out with a weak and verrry dry osmanthus tea, not honeyed, fruity nor sweet in any way. Then around 20 mins in, a robust though somewhat synthetic peach suddenly appears and grows louder by the minute. This is when the scent development stops and stays like this for the rest of the duration. Meh.
I have quite a few Fall suitable scents I want to use! TF Black Orchid Parfum, F*cking Fabulous, Guerlain Cherry Oud, Tobacco Honey, Cartier La Panthère Parfum to name a few.
I just got a new bottle of Panthère recently- can’t wait to bring it out to wear!
Thanks for the detailed review of Peche Mirage – definitely not one that inspired a blind buy for me. I’ll sample it sometime or another.
I am impressed that you gave it 5 tries!
I sprayed on La Curie Ossuary today. I’m not sure it’s transitional, but it feels more fall to me. I wasn’t going to wear Incendo as we’ve been blanketed in forest fire smoke for days. (We got through all of this summer without the post-apocalyptic weather, but then September happened.)
Finally, though, tonight some rain has moved through. I’m hoping desperately that this will move the smoke off. At any rate it’s given me the opportunity to play my rain playlist, which does have some winners on it, like Oran Juice Jones, “The Rain.” (Yeah, I also have a smoke playlist…because I need one every year these days.)
First week of school and single parenting is down. It can only go up from here, right?
Thank you for reminding me about Ossuary and Incendo. They are perfect this time of year (sans real smoke, that is).
Just played your Oran Juice Jones The Rain. Really enjoy seeing the rest of your Rain playlist. I don’t think I can handle the Smoke playlist after this winter’s fires just yet.
Happy Sunday!
We are still enjoying false fall and I am wearing Coco Noir today. It smells smooth and elegant.
Happy Sunday!
Coco Noir is on my Fall list list of perfume I should wear more often.
Me too😊
Me three.
Greetings from Drôme Provençale where I arrived late Wednesday night. I’m glad to report that there hasn’t been any fire, it’s the south West of France which suffered. On the contrary everything is very green as there has been copious amounts of rain in spring. It can rain in September but it’s been gorgeous so far, around 26C and today it will rise to 30C. I realize how lucky I am to prolong my summer every September. I will comment time to time but I have only four perfumes available here. Sending best wishes to everyone.
Glad you arrived safely Aurora.
Have a wonderful and relaxing time. 🌻😀
Thank you very much Lillyjo, yes relaxation is starting to sink in.
Enjoy your trip, Aurora!
Thank you very much, gorgeous weather, September in Provence is uniquely lovely.
Have a great time!
Thank you Kris, I made a great tomato salad with local produce.
Sounds good!
Enjoy it all!
Thank you Apsara, lots of rest on menu but also long walks.
Best kind of vacation sez me!
😁I agree and hope you feel rested too.
Aurora, bonne vacances! It sounds idyllic so enjoy each and every well-deserved minute!
Merci Leslie! Mon frère a une maison en Provence et chaque année c’est là que je passe mes vacances.
Profitez bien du temps ensemble!
Glad to hear you are safe in Provence and relaxing. Eat a tomato for me, please!
Thank you Jalapeno, I will make another tomato salad😀
Have a lovely time Aurora!
Thank you Robin!

Summer vs Fall. It’s funny!
I slept a bunch last night and feeling a bit better and back at work this morning. I had to be here at 7 am so my sotd is from the purse stash. Coco Mademoiselle, another good transitional scent.
Hope your day goes well today and your cold doesn’t bother you too much!
Lillyjo, that video is hilarious. I’m alternatively amused and grossed out by all the pumpkin spice products (Pumpkin Spice Bud Light 😳). Glad you’re feeling a bit better. Aboutse stash of fragrance – Brilliant Idea!
That video was awesome! Made me grin from ear to ear.
I still can’t get over the fact that Pumpkin Spice Spam was a real thing one year not too long ago.
Today is the season opener for the Cleveland Browns and my folks are going to be glued to the TV. I can care less about football so I will find something to binge watch after lunch. Wearing Number One Intense today.
I love football so I will be watching today with your folks. My team is the Minnesota Vikings and they don’t play until tomorrow night. That’s okay. I will watch anyone!!!
I’m in a nail-biter watching Steelers vs Jets. Not an Aaron Rogers fan, so if the Jets win I will be happier than I would be with a loss. Watched my Alma mater last night get shellacked- they only managed a measly field goal. 😩
I’m watching too and cheering for the Jets. Don’t care for Aaron either.
First football game I ever remember watching as a child was Jets w Joe Namath as QB!
https://youtu.be/zMOdn-8zK-Y?feature=shared
Joe Namath for Brut Cologne.
I can smell it just watching that😂
I also liked his pantyhose commercial!
Wearing Goldfield &Banks Ingenious Ginger because it’s in my travel bag. For fall, I love light ambery and spicy scents. We are on our way home from NJ where my son’s game yesterday was called after a four hour storm delay, ending in a tie. The game started at heat stroke levels of hot and then a deluge so we sat around soaked waiting for them to decide what to do. Exhausting. The team ended up getting back to Cleveland at 4:30 am. Rough first week.
That stinks! Hope you are nice and dry today.
Gosh that’s really tough! You’re very devoted parents which I’m sure your son will cherish as memories many years from now!
Ugh, that does sound exhausting! Extra parenting points for sure.
SOTD is Byredo Rose of No Man’s Land. I guess this could be a transitional scent. I usually wear it in the cooler months, but it really can be worn year-round. I really like Eau des Merveilles as a transitional scent as well.
It is going to heat up again this week into the 80’s so I suppose I am going to have to drag out the summer perfumes again.
I’m fully committed to my Fall perfumes now. I will want my summer one’s back probably after the first snowfall. Lol.
Good way to think about it. Unfortunately, I see 85 most of the week and I can’t see wearing some of mine in that heat.
I’m in 4160 Tuesdays Hush Hush edp. To me this is a good fall transition scent, being not overly sweet. The violet is so well blended with the woods. Overall, it’s smelling a bit mentholy in the deep drydown. It could be the cooler weather bringing out those notes.
And love that name!
In Los Angeles we don’t always get long transitional seasons, and fall and even early winter can be quite hot. I recall ‘laying out’ in my backyard to tan over Xmas holidays one year during college. But generally in summer I crave light floral or light fruity or cologney or white musk type things such as Dzongkha, Hiris, Chanel EdC, Patchouli Patch, many from the Jo Malone, Body Shop, Crabtree, L’Occitane, and L’Artisan lines (you get the picture). I don’t want anything cloying or sweet. When it’s cold I crave spicy resinous honeyed scents, ambers, vanillas, incenses, things by Lutens or Tauer or the classic French houses. That’s when I reach for sweeter scents, although I will also wear Santal Blanc in the summer sometimes, or Le Chevrefeuillei in the winter (I’m all out at the moment), so I’m all over the place. But I was thinking that Lorenzo Villoresi Piper Nigrum is a good transitional scent. The mint and anise notes keeps it cool, while the black pepper, incense and spices warm it up a bit. I’m going to get my bottle out for the post shower evening. Right now I’m in Madame Rochas. My mother always had a bottle in the bathroom cabinet so it reminds me of her, but it is too much of a straight ahead floral for me, though there are some animalics lurking in there. Hope everyone’s having a good weekend.
I completely agree with DeniseH’s take on Los Angeles!
I can see where you wouldn’t get the drastic seasonal changes like we do in the Midwest.
Happy Sunday! Sotd Replica Lazy Sunday Morning because this morning has been anything but lazy & I enjoy irony. Also I’m in search of more plinks so want to use up samples &!discovery sets.
Watched my beloved Steelers beat the Jets including a 60-yd field goal -Unbelievable! Now watching US Open men’s finals. Later 3 loads of laundry!
Fall & transitional scents- I have no idea. Macy’s sent me some Replica samples and I plan to wear two of them this fall- Jazz Club and By the Fireplace.
Both of your Replica samples were a little too masculine for me, but some people really liked them.
I think I’ll have to try them when it gets cooler. I’ll let you know what I think.
This weekend has been spent in vintage Chanel No. 19 EDT and vintage Estee Lauder Private Collection just because the mood struck. I’m also burning the last of a cilantro and bergamot candle from Keap.
Transitional scents between summer and fall are kinda anything goes – last chance to wear the beachy summer perfumes on the slightly warmer days, a good time for green florals, classic perfumes, chypres and herbaceous scents on the cloudy, windy, or moodier days. With more mild temps, not quite warm and not quite cool, most anything goes!
I gave myself a four day weekend by taking Friday and Monday off so tomorrow I’m looking forward to vegging with some TV shows or a movie and a book and getting a few chores done as well.
You have been smelling fabulous! I found myself spraying Eau de Patou in the morning and Arpège this afternoon so something must be in the air. I think you’re right about classic perfumes and chypres in particular; they are perfect for this time of year.
Woo-hoo for a long weekend!
Enjoy your time tomorrow!
Wearing Peche Velours by Mainson Mahata for the second day. I like it, there’s a big projection and sillage, but it is also unobtrusive? i would not wear it in a scent free environment at all – this one travels. But it is also really pleasant.
It goes in and out of me being able to smell it, even when my husband sitting a few feet away commented on being able to smell it. Two sprays.
It is very nice, I get the peach, there’s maybe a vanilla thing that barely registers as vanilla, more like someone baked using powdered sugar nearby.
Okay – I just figured it out. Wearing this smells like walking through a peach vape cloud.
It sounded interesting until you said peach vape…that is not a smell I love!
Any kind of vape cloud sounds awful to me. Yuck!
Happy Monday!
I am doing the CP – Essential Parfums Orange x Santal for Brandied Melon, because this color makes me think of both oranges and sandalwood.
Happy Monday Glannys!
Good call, I could not think of anything for that color but oranges and sandalwood together seems right.
I’m in Philosykos on this sunny and cool Monday. I was thinking of Poppy and Barley earlier, which I do think works for transition purposes, although I’ve certainly worn both of these in hot weather. Moschino I Love Love is another one that’s calling me. I enjoy the orange note, and the woody notes in the drydown seem fall-appropriate. I bet there’s some layering opportunities with this one.
Have a great Monday, y’all!
That made me realize I possibly have no weather associations with Philosykos at all since I mostly wear it inside!
Happy Monday! Since today would have been my aunt’s birthday, I’m wearing her last favorite scent on me IA How to Say Bicycle in French for its herbaceous notes. Chinese food tonight for dinner with her hospice nurses and her favorite celebration prosecco, actually Martini & Rossi Asti Spumante, for toasting how marvelous she was and how utterly missed she is less than 3 months out. Mom will be wearing my new Shalimar L’Essence to see likes it.
How sweet her nurse’s will be there for dinner.
Nurses Rock!!!
Sounds like a lovely way to say thanks to the hospice nurses.
A lovey evening was had by all!
That is very nice.
I am curious how your mom likes the perfume.
She liked it but said the original smelled better because my dad bought it for her!!
Happy Monday everyone!
SOTD is a transitional fragrance-Eau des Merveilles.
Happy Monday!
You smell fantastic!
Had some groceries delivered and how hard is it to keep common items in stock? There are so many substitutions that one can make. I was thinking of wearing the original Coco but wasn’t exactly ready for the commitment that it requires. I went with Hedonist today.
I swear grocery store shelves have not been the same since covid. That and doctor appts…
Good morning! I’m wearing Indigo Smoke from Arquiste today.
Nice call for a Monday 🙂
I really enjoyed watching the eclipse yesterday as our sky was completely clear. Watched from around 5.15- 6.20 am when the moon then dipped behind the hills and the sky started lightening, for sunrise around 7am. It felt extra special to see the rust red of the moon followed by the streaks of the sun. Still happily wearing Shalimar but this time layered with Santal Majuscule. A good combination.
Kanuka, your vivid description makes the eclipse come alive! Thank you for sharing it!
Le Lion called to me today….ROAAAR!🦁
I need to dig out my decant for Fall/Winter. You smell great!
No Autumn weather for me today. It got up to 86 degrees F/30 degrees C. Not going to see a cool down until Friday or Saturday. So I will keep on with the summer-ish scents I’ve been enjoying. Some of my Fall favorites, like vintage Hugo Boss Deep Red and Agent Provocateur will have to wait.
Teflon kitty’s shoulder is healing up nicely. I had trouble finding the injured spot this morning. She goes back to the vet on Wednesday for a re-check on her ear infection.
SOTD = commando.
Fingers crossed…that ear has to resolve eventually, right??
Thanks Robin. The vet thinks it could be autoimmune related, so I do have a med that might address that. Was reading the drug insert today.
