Friday scent of the day 8/22

Posted by Robin on 22 August 2025 228 Comments

It's Friday and National Eat A Peach Day! Plus, the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. Musical birthdays: John Lee Hooker, Claude Debussy, Tori Amos. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with ylang ylang, if you have one. Thanks to Kanuka for the suggestion!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in my DIY sweet orange + ylang ylang lotion again, this time layered with Neela Vermeire Créations Pichola.

Reminder: 8/29 will be Desert Island Friday...come up with a list of 5 fragrances you could live with for some unspecified amount of time while marooned on a desert island. Share your list on Friday and wear one of the fragrances. (Suggested by springpansy)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello and tgif!
Sotd is The Body Shop Full Ylang Ylang. It is a realistic tropical ylang scent and also budget friendly! I got this for 40% off so by perfume math it’s pretty much free.
The paella yesterday was a success! Polished it off and no leftovers. I’ve tried many rice types but nothing compares with the real Bomba rice. Now I am itching to make Arroz Negro.

Great news on both fronts. Paella can be intimidating – so many ingredients and the special pan. Can’t say I’ve ever made it though I should try!
And your Lush sounds lovely. and you smell great! I will have to try that one!

The symmetry of John Lee Hooker sharing a birthday with Debussy is pleasing to me 🙂

And a customer brought me a huge basket of home grown peaches yesterday, and I had one with breakfast. IMHO no one has yet captured the smell of a perfectly ripe peach-the smell of these is to die for.

I am wearing Guerlain Embruns d’ylang, from a decant, and I love it. It reminds me of that fantastic lily AA that came out in 2012-I gave that bottle away and truly regret it.

Hope it’s a decent Friday for everyone 🙂

DeniseH the peaches are so good! This customer had a long and distinguished career, and I think he missed his calling-he should have been a peach farmer. And thank you for the compliment-I do love this scent.

I love both the edt and the edp, but sometimes the edp seems more approachable. And elegance is an attribute that I strive for (but sadly, seldom reach), so just for today I’ll pretend that I have it. 🙂

I’m wearing the only fragrance I own that I know has Ylang Ylang. Pepper Ylang by Smell Bent was on of the Frankensmellies produced by the brand, and I have most of a full bottle. The pepper is predominant here, but I’m not a Ylang Ylang fan anyway.

DIY ylang body lotion (used it all week) and my newest decant addition: Comptoir Sud Pacifique Coeur d’Ylang. This one’s a bit of a shapeshifter – sometimes it smells like suntan lotion, sometimes like a vanilla liqueur. Gourmand suntan lotion? In any case, lots of vanilla and ylang – a fun scent.

I am wearing again BBW Delicate Iris (not Simply Iris as I named it yesterday).

Already at the airport waiting to board our plane back home. The memorial service yesterday was beautiful, full of tears and laughter. My sister and I were glad to be there sharing that special moment with everyone. At some point, my aunt, 81 years old made unnecessary comments about not having a religious service that made my cousin’s wife feel very uncomfortable. My cousin was not a religious person and he always said that he didn’t want any type of religious services when he died. I am thankful that the situation didn’t turn into a drama, because it is not easy to make an old and religious person, like my aunt, understand that.
Other than that, I am glad to be on our way home. My youngest sister is on a business trip and my brother-in-law and nieces are planning to visit a farm to pick up peaches and strawberries this weekend. I think I will join them.

    Happy and healthy Friday! 🌻

Thank you, Lillyjo! I saw the whole line for the first time yesterday. I assume it is new. If I remember correctly there were 8 of them. I tried all of them in paper and they are pretty nice, especially for layering. I also liked the Tonka and the Amber, but didn’t buy them.

In just a smidge of Iris Poudre which they say has ylang ylang among the notes. I’ve had a crazy but fun week —got to visit a charming town called Gig Harbor, and sleep on a boat for a night. Also played with all 3 grandkids at different times. We are having a gorgeous (although too dry) summer.

Wearing Jubilation 25 since it has ylang ylang in it. Doing the big grocery shop today and might as well smell fabulous while doing it.

If you want to read something a little funny here it goes. I did a load of laundry and didn’t check a fleeced work coat well enough and a Clinique Happy roller ball went through the wash. It was still full and didn’t leak all over the clothes. Good thing I caught it before I put everything in the dryer.

L’Essence is quite recognizably a Shalimar flanker, minus the components some view as difficult, i.e. incense, leather & civet. It also omits the bergamot topnote. Think the far drydown will make the Ode lovers happy. I do own Mexique, but will have to compare them on a less sticky & humid day. It’s been a while since I’ve smelled it, but l’Essence may bear a resemblance to Shalimar Eau Legere, without the lime & bergamot.
The 30 ml bottle is attractive and I love the deco font. This will be a great fall scent, while I think of the OG as a dead of winter choice.

SOTD= DS & Durga Durga, a big dose of tuberose and ylang. Participating in the CP by accident!
Finally cooler weather here, at least at night, what a relief.
The fire in Wyoming has grown to almost 130,00 acres. Partial control because the back end of the fire has run out of fuel. People with no winter grazing left are weighing whether to go deeper in debt buying hay, or selling their herds and hoping they can rebuild next year, or the year after. It will take 3 years for the grazing to grow back to what it was this year prior to the fire, which was actually pretty good, since we had had a wet, cool, late spring. So sad. My family is not badly impacted, we are in much better shape that most of our neighbors, due to the vagaries of the winds.
Today, I spent the morning getting my Escape’s oil changed, tires rotated, filters and levels checked, and generally making sure I am ready for winter.
This afternoon, another therapeutic massage! I love that my PT told me to get a massage every week in between the PT appointments. So much long term stress, my muscles are pretty much one big knot. Looking forward to another hour of soft smells, soft music and mostly soft touches. Have a good Friday, one and all.

I’m glad your property is not impacted, meredifay, but so sorry for all your neighbors. “The vagaries of the winds” is also something I’m familiar with, here in Los Angeles. My SIL’s house was among a half block of homes left standing after the Altadena fire, but everything around her burned for blocks. She is back in her home after much fire remediation, but there is scorched earth everywhere and it won’t be the same in our lifetimes.

I’m in Flower Drench from Beauty Pie, and cp compliant because it has middle notes of ylang ylang.
Omg it was gorgeous this morning! It’s my day off but woke up at my regular alarm time anyway. I walked to get a latte and it was a lovely 61 degrees and sun shining on my face.🌞 Our extended forecast has highs in the 60s and 70s. The weatherman says this is the first time we’ve had temps like this since May, and I’m ready for it! It’s been so hot this summer.
Yesterday was our 32 wedding anniversary and it was really just like any other day except we walked to a neighborhood restaurant with outdoor seating for dinner. No gifts exchanged, BUT my husband did get us tickets this week to see Cheap Trick when they come to town in December so I’m counting that as our gift that we’ll get to enjoy together. I can remember having a crush on Robin Zander when at Budokan live came out. I was 10, lol.

Back home, dog is very happy (our son housesat) and I’m abloom in Guerlain’s AA Ylang Vanille, so pretty. It is also an AA that lasts a long time on me, unlike many of them, so that’s a plus factor too. This CP has reminded me to wear it more often.

Today I’m in my most summery ylang ylang perfume, Micallef Ylang in Gold. It even has tiny gold flecks in the bottle so you get a very subtle shimmer when it’s applied. Seriously, super subtle nothing like full on glitter skin. I think this one smells pretty beachy and delightful. I have loved it with just a decant for many years and then I received a bottle from a generous swapper in last year’s swap meet.

We’re about to have a heat wave (hopefully the last of this year) starting today and going though Tuesday. The highest temps should be on Saturday and Sunday. No a/c here except an enormous hand-me-down portable one that’s a beast to set up so we’ll probably just roast in here and have lots of iced water and frozen fruit pops.

Gaynor was in town yesterday so we met up and had a good yak, pretty much talked about perfume for an hour and I came away with some wonderful samples and, sadly, she went away with nothing because I forgot to give her the bottle of vintage 1000 I picked up in the op-shop a while ago. Then, last night I watched Rocky for the first time ever. The 1970s were such an incredible decade for American movies…Francis Ford Coppola, Altman, Cassavetes, Friedkin, Malick, Spielberg, Lucas, Scorsese, Woody Allen, Polanski…anyway, what a great day. Wearing L’eau Moheli today and from the number of stars I saw earlier I think it’s going to be sunny. Saw my first magnolia flower in bloom yesterday…must be spring!

I think homemade lotion is the way to go to get the full ylang ylang experience, and combo with sweet orange sounds great.

I was initially going for something obvious, a white flower bomb that is Hiram Green Moon Bloom, with its notes of tuberose, jasmine and ylang ylang. While I was looking for it, I found a bottle of vintage Eau d’Hadrien, a citrus and green notes bomb but with its notes buttressed by ylang ylang in the base, so I went for it instead.

I forgot how glorious this old formula was! Citrusy and mossy with a hint of creamy flowers in the bottom. I tried the modern version, which still lists cypress and ylang ylang in the notes, several years ago and I hated the watered down, bathroom cleaner type of citrus formula so I will stick to the vintage juice, while it lasts. I’m really enjoying wearing it right now. This all takes me back to my early perfumista days, it was one of the first perfumes I fell in love with.

How lovely…I forgot Hadrien even had ylang, have not smelled the vintage version in eons. Glad it has a decent shelf life.

I miss Sud, that was my favorite, but have avoided trying modern versions, figured no way could they be as good.

I had a crazy mixed-up morning today! Planned a leisurely grocery trip followed by a stop at BBW and lunch @McD’s and suddenly remembered we had a yoga class first thing at a nearby library and if we didn’t all of a sudden hurry we’d be late, only to realize halfway there it was the week for the class to be virtual and not in person. Oy! The rest of the trip was pretty goofy, too, but it ended on a good note when I treated myself to a few minis on sale @BBW and used a coupon for an even better deal.👍

For today’s cp, I’m wearing Goutal’s Songes. I fell in love with this fragrance from first sniff, which always puzzled me since I rarely meet a white floral scent that I even like, much less love, but I sure do this one.❤️

Hoping everyone stays safe from Erin and all the other weather anomolies we’ve been experiencing lately. 🤞A nice day here for a change, mild temps and ⛅️🌤️.

That sounds like something I would do! Glad you finished off with treats at BBW.

We are having decent weather. I know there was coastal flooding and rip tides on the Delaware beaches near me, but nothing inland, we did not even get a bad storm.

I had a lovely time chatting to Kanuka yesterday, there aren’t that many people in the world who enjoy talking about perfume so much!
It was a beautiful spring afternoon, so it was a great day all round.
One the way home, I went into a fashion shop (it’s been an institution in Dunedin for 40 years) that stocks CdG, and they also had a perfume from designer Anne Deulemeester. It is a nice leather, but I nearly laughed out loud when I saw the price – nearly USD$500. That makes everything else on my buy list look completely reasonable.

I’m in Chanel No 19 edt. Hoping the green-ness will counteract the heat that’s settling in for the next while.

I started to itemize my stash just to see how many bottles I have; I also looked for ylang ylang on the first page of bottles that I recorded; it’s at about 25%. I’ll continue my project since it’s going to be scorching out for the next week or so.

    Stay cool everyone!

I accidentally click post too soon. eheheh 😆 I quite like it and look forward to trying it again if/when the weather cools off here. ☀️

I was never really a fan of OG Shalimar and do think the Millésimes were my gateway drugs. Now I wonder what I didn’t like about Shalimar. 🤷‍♀️ I guess Guerlain has had their way with me and their plan worked. 🍋🍨🐄😅

I think the same way you do. I never cared for the OG Shalimar either but did like the Millesimes in iris and jasmine.

Since I just got a taste of the Shalimar L’Essence, I am not saying too much yet though it seems like a toned down version of the original. I will try it for real tomorrow since it is predicted to be cooler outside.

SOTD = Chanel Eau Premiere EDP

Lovely! I have the 40mL size which came either via a swap or freebie. Regardless, I love it! 🥰

I usually try, and fail to, get the $s off from a minimum purchase at Target. I was hoping to do it yesterday but somehow when I tallied up my “wants” I ended up not making it. I have, therefore, decided to stop doing this because I don’t want to disappoint myself.

In other news, my never-ending quest for organization has me thinking a lot about how to organize. Don’t get me wrong – just about the only organization book I got over the years was the one by Marie Kondo and I organized myself out of losing it. Anyway, here are some books from The NY Times:

      I will check the list.

LesLiesse! I hope you’re keeping cool in this heatwave.

A wonderful weekend with my family. They loved the play, loved LACMA, and loved Osteria Mozza. (The mole was interesting, but I don’t think any of us will be rushing back to have it again – some fab appetizers, though, and the atmosphere was fun and festive.)

My sisters sampled dozens of perfumes, and I sent them home with many travel atomizers – Chanel, Malle, Parfum d’Empire, Givenchy… My mom only wears perfume on rare occasions, and when she does it’s White Shoulders, because it reminds her of her mother. But I convinced her to try Cuir de Russie, and she ADORED it. She went home with enough to last her for many years.😊

White Shoulders was what my aunt always wore! I’m very happy your mom liked the Cuir de Russie. And what a perfect idea to gift your sisters travel atomizers of those fabulous fragrances! Holy Moley, no mole in the future then. As for heat, it’s fairly bad here too. I suspect we will all be able to wear summer fragrances into October at this rate.

Embruns d’Ylang for the CP win! Using the search by notes/my shelf tool on Fragrantica confirmed that I am a big ylang ylang fan, and a fan of the “yellow floral” note in general. I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s choices!

I think of myself as a big fan but have never really found a ylang-forward fragrance that I adore, honestly I’m happier adding the EO to lotion. Maybe I need to go back and try again?

And I should try an essential oil and lotion! I don’t reliably sniff out ylang (though this CP helped). Fragrantica showed it’s often part of the big florals I enjoy most: Estee, Tuscany per Donna, Diorama, Ubar, and Jill Sander No. 4 are ylang forward on me.

Re: daily lemming on Je I’d Golden Nectar ice cream w ylang-ylang. I stopped by Beverly Hills Jeni’s figuring if any store got that flavor, it would be them. Wrong. They never had it and never heard of it. I showed them Robin’s post, and the store mgr was quite intrigued, said she would report to corporate that someone came in all excited to try it. Now for bragging g rights: I promised myself that if they had Golden Nectar, I would try a scoop (research & reporting purposes 😉😉), but if they didn’t I would walk out without eating any other flavor. Mission Accomplished! 🎉🎉

Robin, I’m with you, but right now I’m trying to take off all the unhealthy weight I packed on during my uncle’s passing in 2024 and my aunt’s this summer. Between takeout and comfort food (ice cream included), I completely fed my feelings. One day a week now I eat what I want (ice cream is on the menu), then 6 days I keep it super healthy, fruit for dessert (eating a peach tonight for National Eat a Peach Day), and a full 64 oz of water. So this week we’re celebrating my goddaughter’s college graduation tomorrow night, meaning Saturday is eat whatever I want, including ice cream and 🥂 to toast her future. That said, I did make a purchase of a bag of long handled metal tasting spoons in a bag that said, “ One voluptuous bite is worth more than all the forgettable ice cream in the world!”

Very late today, as I dealt with the cleaners first thing in the morning, picking the kid up at the ferry from sleepaway camp mid-day, and trying to wrap up everything at work for a week’s vacation in and around all that.

But! I do have a peach to eat, thanks to our trip to the Okanagan last weekend. (And I need to eat it before we leave.) And I will listen to some Tori Amos today to celebrate her birthday.

CP compliant, apparently, with Puente Iris Doux, though I don’t smell the ylang-ylang. It reminds me of my time in Germany last year. Very glad I got a small bottle before he limited everything to crazy expensive 50 mls.

Wearing Perris Monte Carlo Nosy Be Ylang Ylang sample. I swore I would buy this in 2025 and I haven’t gotten it yet. Every time I wear this perfume, I am blown away. It is a floral banana to me, in the best possible way. I keep getting distracted and buying other perfumes. Nosy Be Ylang Ylang is like nothing else I have.

I think I have to wait another month before I make any more perfume purchases.
