Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-August 2025

Posted by Robin on 16 August 2025 207 Comments

The dog days of summer are behind us, and we're celebrating (or mourning, as the case may be) with our usual open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you keep thinking you should wear more often, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

We are going to a big fiesta this afternoon, so my sotd will be Eau de Sunscreen & Deep Woods Off. I’ll check in with a real sotd tomorrow. Happy weekend all!

Fun and hot, 93F all afternoon. The food was amazing and the band was good, and we were able to slip away pretty easily when we were ready. A cold, Dr Bronners Peppermint Castile soap shower was wonderful upon coming home!

Saturday SOTM is Bel Respiro layered with Le Dix dusting powder, a nice green-floral combo. The fall sweater I ordered from LL Bean the other day arrived, and now I’m looking forward to the autumnal equinox even more than usual. I love the shoulder seasons here in the PNW.

I received my sweaters yesterday too. They are nice, but I was hoping they would have been a little heavier. They will be fine for late summer or fall. Which one did you get? I may need to get some others.

I got the quarter-zip cotton-blend one that they call a “mariner shaker” sweater. It’s medium heavy, I’d say. It’s a little scratchy, but nothing that my magical dry cleaner can’t remedy.

Ancient shirts and sweaters are the best. My favorite is a flannel shirt that’s so old the tag says “made in the Kingdom of Siam”. 😂

One more dog day here (90+!), then finally cooler next week; thank heavens.

I’m sampling Xinu Oronardo today. Strong, lovely stuff. Gorgeous tuberose with a medicinal edge. I put a drop on paper, but got a tiny bit on my fingers, and boy, that’s enough.

Big White Flowers can sure pack a punch. I’ve just put on a spritz of Boutonniere (gardenia) and it will calm down in, oh, about an hour.

I’m in Myhrre 55 from a sample. More jasmine than myrrhe on my skin. And softer than I had anticipated. It’s very pretty.
When I was in Le Labo a couple weeks ago, the Iris scent was available in store but I don’t see it on their website. Does anyone know what’s up with that? Is it available only in store? Discontinued?🤔
Unfortunately our dog days of summer are not quite over. 90 and humid today. Cooler weather is coming though, later next week we will finally have some cooler nights.

A fun few days coming up – my mom and my sisters are arriving from the east coast. They are all delightful company, and I can’t wait to see them. I expect my sisters, at least, to spend time exploring my ridiculous collection of perfumes.😊

It’s a short visit, because my mom always heeds the advice of Benjamin Franklin, who said, “Company are like fish; after three days they both stink,” or words to that effect. No matter how much I assure her that I’d love for her to stay longer, she feels that three nights is the right amount.

For fellow Los Angelenos, I’m taking them to a famous Oaxacan restaurant tonight, Guelaguetza. (I love that they’re adventurous foodies.) Tomorrow they’ll come see the play I’m doing, and Monday we’ll hit LACMA and then dine at one of my favorite restaurants, Osteria Mozza.

Scent of the morning is Les Infusions de Mimosa from Prada. No doubt I’ll be in something different when I pick up the fam at the airport.

    Happy Weekend, everyone!

      Twins for SOTD!

What a fun fun time Daniel! I’ve never been to that Oaxaca restaurant, but I’ve heard amazing things about their mole! Osteria Mozza is always great! Bon appétit!

I haven’t been to LACMA since they started construction. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Last guest that came to visit we went to The Broad. In 10 yrs of its existence, I had never visited but I quite enjoyed it.

Play? You’re in a play? Details please!

I haven’t been back to LACMA in many years – eager to see how it’s changed.

Yes, I’ll insist everyone tries the mole! And Mozza is such a treat.

I’m in a play out in the woods of Topanga at the Theatricum Botanicum. An adaptation of Chekhov’s “The Seagull,” set in early 80s Malibu. (A little odd, but it kind of works.) Considering we had only eight rehearsals, it’s pretty good!

Hello, all. I haven’t managed to check in very much this summer. So many guests and they stay a long time. Just sent off the fifth set. And why don’t they offer a suggestion of what to do that day or take themselves off for a bit or offer to make dinner. I am struggling to come up with ways to set boundaries.

I missed our green CP but I’m in Eris Delta of Venus today which might count for the galbanum, although it’s lots of lovely guava as well.

I have the house to myself for a few days and I am planning to bask in it!!

Eau de Liesse which inspired my moniker here is a very favorite of mine. A dear friend who’s half-French loves Eau Pâle, which she calls a lavender-iris scent, despite the citrus top notes.

Yes, something along the lines of Lost Cherry. But I found that fleeting (I live in a very hot and humid climate, maybe that’s why?). Not too fond of Bitter Peach though I would love something that is peachy – Rochas Femme is one of my favourites.

Not here, Robin, we’re still deep in the 🐶 days. Never was I so grateful for a/c like today – it’s ghastly out there. Currently 94 degrees with a 73 dew point. 🥵We walked the 2 blocks earlier to our library, for an outdoor program and free ice cream to say goodbye to summer. I was hot just sitting there toe-tapping; I felt sorry for the band. Then we walked 2 more blocks to our favorite charcuterie for a wonderful summer day lunch of hummus and Apple and Spicy Walnut salad + a 🍷 of rosè wine. Stopped back at the library for a brief cooldown and now we’re home for the day, expecting storms. Got my laundry off the line and, in the vernacular of my childhood neighborhood, I ain’t goin’ nowhere now!

Still enjoying the light fruity scents of YR’s past summer releases. Earlier I wore Collection Ete, with a Mediterranean feel focusing on citrus flower; now I’m relaxing with YR Bleu Vegetal, a bit more floral with a jasmine note.

Stay cool 😎 everyone or, if need be, stay warm!

As I said above to madtowngirl, it feels like dog days here too, although maybe not quite so bad as a month ago. Still, the dog days ended officially on August 11, despite what the weather might or might not do.

I suspect that comes from the Farmer’s Almanac which does not take global warming into consideration 🙂

Every year the Farmers Almanac says it’s going to be cold in the Midwest with some severe snow and ice storms. Every year they are correct. Lol!
It’s the summer that varies more often here.
My personal weather observation is hot dry summer = colder and snowier winter.

I’m still scurrying to catch up with last week’s greens. I wore my obscure French Provençal Vetyver from Honore Payan again yesterday for the CP though I didn’t get a chance to post, and my perfumer friend said she smelled a lot of lemongrass as well as Vetiver in it so I think I was compliant. Today I’m wearing one I rarely see mentioned, Coriolan from Guerlain. I have a partial mini from 1998 and it has a lot of green herbs and clary sage. It was re released some years later as L’Ame d’un Hero’s. My friend has that one so we will do a comparison someday soon. Happy weekend, everyone!

I’ll take your winter. I can always wear more clothes and can still breathe outside even if I have to wear a scarf. In summer there’s only so many clothes I can remove when outside and I am claustrophobic in the heat and humidity. Yeah, I’ll take those nice 80 degree days but they are sadly few and far between.

It was interesting to read in the comments that other people are anosmic to this supposed “beast.” I actually get more nuance in the long dry-down! Hit repeat today for SotD.

This morning I reeked of citronella oil because I made a pest spray to deter the tiny lizards that keep getting into the vacation place. Of course the bottle dripped and some got on me. Persistent stuff, citronella oil. This afternoon after the citronella smell finally went away I put on some CSP Aloha Tiare. Very summery!

SOTD = Maksim Amber +Balsam, which is pleasantly exactly what it sounds like, on first application, in a high end, very pretty way. ( SOTD yesterday was Oud Marine, which is an odd and fantastic perfume – I thought I talked about it hear yesterday but apparently not, anyway, luca Turin was right about these perfumes, they are unusual and special, and worth the drama of getting these samples here from Thailand!)
Meanwhile, back on the ranch, there is a fire that just skirted our ranch and has burned 70,000 acres of our neighbors’ fall and winter grazing land, and is, as of this morning, 0% controlled. It will be an economic and biological catastrophe for the local people, burning the largest grouse lek in the area, and ground that is wintering forage for antelope and mule deer as well as cattle and sheep. It is approaching some small oil well fields and pumping stations, but because of the cuts to various emergency services, the fire was allowed to burn pretty much unattended except by local people trying to protect their property. Now, some federal services have arrived, which should have showed up when the fire first bloomed from 3000 acres to 10,000. There were a couple spots when applications of lots of water could have prevented the spread over a ridge line, but too late. Now it is spreading across flat sagebrush prairie, with no natural barriers and no rain forecast for the foreseeable future. People in front of the fire have spent the last two days moving cattle and horses to hopefully safer pastures. So far no people have died, but the number of livestock and wildlife which were unable to escape the firestorms can only be guessed at until everything dies down. One person posted on Facebook two days ago, that by the time they got their cows moved, the fire was within half a mile of their corrals and house, and they were going to try to save that now. haven’t heard from her this morning, I hope they still have a farmstead to call home. Pray for rain in the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming, if you do that sort of thing. It’s just awful. Sorry to be a bummer. Count your blessings, whatever they are, you never know when things will change in an instant.

Thanks, springpansy! I am in Michigan, far away, and as I said, the fire just skirted our place, burned maybe a 1000 acres of less productive grazing and an old lambing camp, which was not longer used, but my Grandparents had built that little house and all those corrals, so it feels like a loss of history. Neighbors to the east have lost all their winter grazing and some have lost buildings and a lot of fence, but so far no lives. The evacuation order area has been extended. Some people may loose their houses, barns, hayfields and stored hay. It is a mess.

It’s so true about things changing in an instant meredifay! As much as I try to be grateful, taking things, especially ordinary things that happen every day, for granted happens to me frequently. Then – poof!- gone in an instant. Sending prayers that the fire gets contained. After our January flamepocalypse in So Cal, we feel your pain.

SOTD another Maksim perfume sample. Beastia Sacra, the one with frankincense and msg champs and real Siberian deer musk. The still smells fantastic.
Back at the ranch, the fire has spread to over 100,000 acres, now in three counties, and is finally really attracting the attention of the authorities. It is burning away from our pastures, so we are out of the immediate danger zone for now, but roads are closed, evacuation zones are expanding, and it is just generally a bad time in the Big Horn Basin. Pray for rain.

Both have that green, spicy vanilla. I noticed on Fragrantica that quite a few people suggested that Angelique Noire is a smell alike for Eau Duelle so I tried it and agree. (Of course lots of people also disagree so 🤷🏻‍♀️?)

I rotate my fragrances seasonally and often monthly, so to find a scent that’s all-season, all occasion is a rarity. One such scent is my SOTD, SJP Covet. With its notes of lemon, lavender, green notes, and chocolate, I wear it all year round and just layer it over different body products. Today I’m enjoying it layered over various lemon body products for that summery 🌞 feel.

Nasty, nasty storms all around me last night that did considerable damage nearby but, luckily, we just had a few heavy downpours and a couple of brief power outages but all is ok here. Not as hot but still very sticky today, with more rain in the forecast for several days.

Sending stay safe wishes to all for this crazy weather so many of us have been experiencing this summer!🤞🙏

After a bit of poking around on Wikipedia, it seems that the span of summer’s dog days from 03 July to 11 August is a fairly modern idea that originates in the English-speaking world. Depending on the people, the era, or the location, the start of the dog days could be anywhere from 03 July to 15 August, and last anywhere from 30 to 61 days.

Have had a bit of a cool down here over the past couple of days, if you can call temps around 90 degrees F cool. Even had a couple of oh-so-brief and gentle rain showers this afternoon. It’s going to warm up again starting tomorrow, which means that some school districts might have early dismissals due to lack of A/C in older buildings. One meteorologist has said it’s “iced coffee weather” this week.

SOTD = Demeter Gingerale. Something refreshing that doesn’t stick around might be the way to go for a while.

One of the elementary schools I attended was a nasty old brick dump. IIRC, it didn’t have A/C. But the school year there let out before the heat rolled in. (The furnace wasn’t all that good either, and it probably had lead paint on the walls.)

Some of the school buildings in question are old brick ones. They are ovens in 95+ degree heat.

There is a plan to eventually get A/C in all the schools, but it’s going to take quite a bit of time and money to do so.

I’m behind in everything after my Michigan holiday trip, which was mainly to visit family members, with several days and many sweaty hours spent on sorting out old memorabilia and paperwork dating back 40 years or more–things moved from my parents’ house to my brother’s house without any sorting. Tough job, physically but mores emotionally.
Today is my birthday! I’m just drinking wine and eating gifted chocolate fudge. I’ll be having dinners out with friends later this week. I have been doing Korean homework since I missed class last week and must turn in the homework by tomorrow night for credit. So far I’ve learned some basic greetings, vowels, and some consonants. The teacher is excellent and the other “students” (it’s a non-credit class, but serious) seem dedicated and fun. Having learned some languages earlier in my life, I can testify that your memory definitely has a tougher time with things when you are in your 70s rather than your teens or 20s!
I’m catching up on green scents with Zoologist–yesterday was Elephant and today was Chameleon. The former is more truly a green scent than the latter.

    Happy Monday!
Ylang is a rather challenging note for me. Sometimes it comes across as spicy in a medicinal way, even with a sort of camphorous chill. But I do enjoy a creamy, sunny ylang.

Inspired by Robin, I mixed up an ylang-scented body lotion: plain unscented lotion with a few drops of ylang ylang EO. I like it much better than the pure EO – the smell is creamier and mellower.

Today I layered it with a vintage-ish bottle of Samsara (EDP, 1998, according to the seller). Normally I think of Samsara as a powdery sandalwood scent, but today I’m also getting plenty of ylang. Maybe it’s the weather, maybe it’s the DIY lotion, but I love it.

Guerlain sometimes gives samples with a purchase, but they don’t usually just have samples to purchase. You can purchase Guerlain samples at Surrender to Chance or some of the online websites. You also may be able to get a sample at a department store that sells Guerlain perfume.

Great idea! I bet I can find at least a spray in one of the better department stores.

Ooh, thank you for the PSA, She-ra! I couldn’t resist this one. I missed the MVP when it was offered so I made sure to get in on this one. Hoping for good things!

Thanks, She-ra. I checked a few days ago and it wasn’t on the website yet.

Fragrance will be Chanel No. 5 L’eau post workout – post shower, which contains ylang ylang, at least per Fragrantica.

Or rather than “contains”, I should probably say has an ylang ylang note.

I popped by to say that I’m wearing L’AP Tea for Two, and discovered my unposted comment from Sunday.
If I’d hit the post button, I’d have told you that I wore Tobacco Vanille when we went out for coffee, and ended the day in Colony

Taking a break from tropical fruity florals today with Ivoire de Balmain. (Is there another fragrance with more notes than this one? I counted 32!) I have – and ❤️- Ivoire, Miss Balmain, Jolie Madame and Vent Vert, one Pierre Balmain for each season.

Happy birthday to sisters Beautiful 😻 and Pretty 😽, who are 10 today, and their adopted ‘baby’ sister, Adorable 😺. When I found her lost and crying in my backyard on a September morning, she was about 3 weeks old, so we celebrate her birthday on this day also; she is 7 already! They will get new toys and an extra serving of fresh catnip from the garden to celebrate. 🥳

Nasty weather is on its way here again with 3 alerts right now for my area. 🤞to stay safe and 🙏 this nasty weather ends for all of us.

    Happy Monday!

Sotd FM Iris Poudre from my beautiful new bottle! Basking and basking.

Celebrated MRI results with friends at an Asian fusion restaurant. Champagne doesn’t go with Asian food imo, so we ordered cocktails for toasting my good news. I had a litchi martini, which was so fragrant and delicious I was looking for litchi perfumes today. Thinking of either SdJ Cheirosa’68 or CSP Rouge Litchi.

Answering my own post. Sooo, I’m getting ready for ylang CP. I will wear Moon Glory, which I adore. In checking whether ylang-ylang was a top or middle note, I saw it has litchi! But was not listed under Notes for litchi on Fragrantica. So I don’t need another litchi fragrance, I already have one I adore!

I personally didn’t care for Cheirosa ’68 but some do. However, if you are looking for another lithci, I would recommend Gueralin AA Rosa Rossa, Lancome Miracle, Angel Nova, Juliette Has a Gun Miss Charming or Essential Parfums Rose Magnetic. I love all of these.

For me, beer would have been an excellent choice for Asian fusion, especially if a good selection of craft brews are available. Extra bonus points for something sessionable. Vive la difference!

My parents both preferred their steaks medium rare, so that’s how I grew up eating steak. Can’t quite do rare. You are braver than I am!

Back in Demeter Gingerale again today, for errands and household tasks. Bringing home a huge batch of fresh mint in a warm car smelled great this afternoon. 🌿

Forgot to mention that Friday was the 4th anniversary of my Mom’s passing. I’m kind of shocked that much time has gone by already.

I have a couple recipes that use mint in a savory dish, like the Greek style marinade I mentioned above. I could also use cilantro, but I prefer the mint.

Sending hugs your way on your sad anniversary.🤗
I have several varieties of mint in my backyard; it’s really easy to grow and spreads quickly, can be grown in a pot easily, too, if it’s something you use a lot.

I have grown mint in containers back in NJ. For some weird reason, I didn’t see any mint plants at the usual suspects here this Spring. Strange.
