Thursday scent of the day 8/14

Posted by Robin on 14 August 2025 137 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy National Creamsicle Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm out of town, and in my usual DIY lotion with sweet orange and ylang oils. No more green points for me this week!

Reminder: 8/15 will be Go Green Friday...wear a green fragrance. (This is a repeat, suggested by Dawn.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I used to know the difference between PF & Philosykos very well but it’s been so many years since I’ve smelled PF that I’d have to go look at my notes! Is PF greener than Philosykos?

It’s been years since I smelled Philosykos. 😂 I didn’t care for it; as I recall, it’s built around a fig-fruit note I don’t find appealing, and it doesn’t strike me as green. PF, by contrast, smells mostly of green leaves rather than fruit.

This is hilarious! I happen to prefer Ninfeo Mio for my figs in perfume.

And my ultimate fig perfume depends on the weather. Summer = Ninfeo Mio. Cold weather = TM Womanity.

    Hello.
Sotd is Hermès Galop. It’s elegant and expensive smelling but easy to wear, I love it.
I plan to drop by Dior to try out Miss Dior Essence again, so I left my arms unscented. Does anyone else perfume their arms usually?

I am maybe weird but I never scent my wrists…either the back of the hand or the top side of the forearm.

I usually put fragrance on both the inside and top of my wrists, and for a weak fragrance I will also spray on the top of my arms and the inside of my elbow. A stronger fragrance I will just spray the sides of my neck and the top of my chest.

I recently started putting perfume on my upper arms. Previous spots were not tolerating application any more, and were quite unhappy.

I can’t do perfume on my wrists. For some reason, it drives me crazy in a Bad Way.

In Guerlain AA Herba Fresca. Full bottle thunk! I don’t need to worry because I have a BUB that I will open next summer. I have a couple of more bottles and decants with very few spritzes left that I planned to finish before the season is over.

Another hot, muggy day in the 90s. Having my second cup of coffee with salt caramel sauce and a bacon cheddar cheese bagel. Very unhealthy breakfast, but I wanted to take a break today from my healthy food
    Happy Thursday! 🌞

That sounds like a great indulgent breakfast! I find my body tolerates a fairly abstinent diet for a few weeks, but when the cravings start to get to me, a good bingeing feast day seems to help reset everything a bit. After all, back in the day, that is how our ancestors probably ate, a fairly spare diet with lots of greens until a big protein meal opportunity came along, and everyone could get their fill, before back to the more moderate routine!
      Plus, you smell great!

I am doing a full wearing of one of those samples I got from the Russian perfumer, Maksim Bortnikov in Bangkok. This is called Chypre le Grand, and that name made me roll my eyes, until I smelled it! This is a very very nice and yet odd perfume! Top notes ae Bergamot, Lime, and Grapefruit. Heart notes are Thai liquorice, Styrax, Guaiac wood, Benzoin, Beeswax, Rose de mai, and Siberian Deer Musk (which as I noted yesterday, smells nothing at all like anything that passes for musk in laundry products or the perfumes one can purchase at Ulta). Base notes are Oakmoss (also possibly the real deal – maybe that is why Russians are making perfumes in Thailand, where the authorities may not care at all about IFRA regulations?), Labdanum, Light Patchouli (light is apparently a relative concept here) and Virginia Cedarwood. An international perfume, harkening back to the roots of the genre but not a fusty speak-easy type Chypre. Another good one for getting in the spirit of outdoor adventures, or at least watching a movies like “A River Runs Through It” or “The African Queen.” 🙂 it started off with a big blast of citrus and cedar, and now several hours in, there is more benzoin and labdanum, with less cedar and more oakmoss. It is so well blended, I know the liquorice and rose are there, but they are not distinct. This is that chypre magic, just like Mitsouko (although they smell nothing alike ), I just keep sniffing my hand and thinking, ‘What is that?”
I am a lousy housekeeper, and I am ashamed to say that my living room rug filled more than one vacuum cleaner cannister with dry gunk and dust this morning. It doesn’t take than long to do, I truly do not understand why I resist putting that on a regular schedule and just doing it so it doesn’t become another monumental task. My sister tells me I am still recovering from that wearing commute. Ah, well, we all do what we can do when we can do it, and you know, la la, to the rest, I am watching my Bp. LOL. Have a good day one an all!

Luca Turin just posted on the surprising number of Russian perfumers in Thailand, as well, though he was reviewing Aton Perfumes. I personally liked his theory that they are secret followers of Scriabin, but somehow doubt that’s the case. 🙂

Yes, that is where I got the original information from. That guy is a wealth of entertaining but veering information, and his observations of the world make me laugh. He knows things I don’t, but I don’t agree with some of his conclusions. I do seem to have similar taste with his evaluation of perfumes that I have tried, but that is a limited sample. I know he is not everyone’s cup of tea. For example, I do not know Scriabin, and didn’t look it up. What do you know about this name?

Scriabin was a Russian composer in the late 19th / early 20th century. I believe he was also a theosophist, or theosophist-adjacent, and had some idea about a piece to be performed in the Himalayas that would cause the world to end, though he never finished it.

Well it got here finally, and what I put on this morning is still chypring away, fainter but complete, all these hours later. I am not sure I am brave enough to order a full bottle of this, but the four little samples were wrapped up in enough layers it took me 10 minutes to get the box open! So they are serious about their international shipments.

I’m now on my second full week of being laid off, and still have not really established a new routine at all. In fact the opposite, I’m sort of losing track of days! I’ve been hanging out a lot more with my son before he’s back to school next week, and I also have some family visiting this week. Oh well.

I wore Rauque on Tuesday, and it does have a bitter green note to my nose. And yesterday I chose Dusita Pelagos, which has pine and cypress. I’m very tempted by a full bottle of this, it’s at the discounters, but I really have no business buying a full bottle right now. Still commando for today. I hope everyone is having a good week!

Getting laid off is such a challenge. When my hubby was almost accidently laid off, (long story involving non-profit politics – ugh) he started scrambling immediately to find a new job. If you are situated so that you can take a little breather, treat it as a sabbatical or extended vacation if you can, and relax a little!

It was a while ago, he was highly marketable, found good paying job he hated within a few weeks, and a better paying job he liked a couple months after that, so it was chaotic for a while but was a good thing in the long run. Glad to hear you have some resources so it is not an urgent financial mess. Uncertainty is hard to live with,, I know.

Dropping in today, for once, since I have a few minutes this morning to breathe. SOTD is Nomenclature Minted, which is maybe not “green” in the way a lot of people think of it, but mint is green and the bottle’s green, so… Haven’t had this one out yet this summer, but I had a dream the other night where I was wearing it. I hope everyone’s having a great summer, and a less busy one than mine!

SOTD is Chanel no 5 L’Eau.

I did hear from Deva today. Have been hesitant to share anything as she asked me not to quite a while ago. Today, she said I could. She is still in Minnesota working at a campground. She found out a few months ago that she had a serious health issue and has been getting treatments, which haven’t gone the best. She is probably going to try a different treatment protocol and if that doesn’t work she will just let the chips fall where they may. Right now she has no interest in perfume so I don’t know that she even reads the blog anymore. She said she hopes everyone is doing well and enjoying their stash! Keep her in your thoughts and prayers please.

Got up to 98 this afternoon instead of 100 degrees F. Still plenty hot! But a good sized weather front started blowing thru about an hour ago and temps have dropped by 10 degrees or so. Haven’t seen any rain from it, alas.

SOTD = back in Chanel Paris-Deauville again today. I smelled great taking out a few boxes to the recycling bin!

I didn’t know it was National Creamsicle Day when I chose my fragrance today, but it’s perfect because it does smell like a creamsicle! SOTD for the last of 2 beautiful summer days is the very fun summer scent, RL Ralph Rocks. I won a small bottle and lotion years ago when our iconic and beloved Marshall Field & Co. was still in existence and used to have great fragrance events. Described as a ‘citrus floral cream,’ its notes are passion fruit, lemon, and kiwi layered over palm leaf, orange blossom, hyacinth and freesia, on a base of sandalwood and amber. Perfumer is Annie Buzantian, whose fragrances I tend to like, and I like Ralph Rocks a lot. 👍

Started the day with another virtual yoga class, then a bunch of errands, now looking forward to another fun library Global Neighbors program tonight. There’s always music, cultural info and food; tonight the focus will be on Mexico.

    Have a great night!🇲🇽🌮🎶

I’m watching my dog zoom around and tossing an acorn around the yard. It’s the little things in life. 🙂
I’m sampling Jadore d’eau. The one without alcohol. It supposedly has green notes. It’s fine.
If anyone is looking for a coffee scent, BBW has one called Vanilla Cafe. It’s definitely coffee smelling. I picked up the body products today.

It seems like a fun smell. They were on sale for 5 dollars. I wouldn’t pay full price.

I see there’s a Rich Expresso scent on their website, says it’s a dark coffee scent, might be really good with the Black Opium. I use the. Vanilla Mocha Cafe products from a few years ago with Black Opium and I love it!

Sounds good’. I’ve been avoiding BBW lately as I have WAY too many lotions and potions so had not heard of this one. I have the Vanilla Mocha Cafe products from a few years ago and I wear it with my coffee scents, including Black Opium, which I love.
