Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, early August 2025

Posted by Robin on 2 August 2025 206 Comments

We're marking the first weekend in August with our same old open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, any perfume sampling plans you might have for the weekend, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

What, I’m the first? wow. I don’t have any perfume-related questions but wanted to say what beautiful flowers those are! I wonder if they’re dahlias? I am on hold with my bank after a bunch of fraudulent charges on my debit card. Yikes. It has been canceled already but I’m about to travel next week for vacation and it’s a very bad time to be without my bank card! Ugh. Anyway I hope others are having a better Saturday than I am!

I’m sorry that your bank card was compromised and I hope it doesn’t impact your travel too much. What a PITA! I wish banks would issue replacement or temporary cards more quickly.

Thanks, allo and Laila. I should be glad that my bank (Wells Fargo) caught the fraud right away and so nothing was taken out of my account. But it feels very creepy. And, alas, they can’t send the card in any expedited way, nor can they send it to me at another address in Michigan. Oh well. What I can do is simply go to a branch and show my ID and take out cash before I leave. It’s somewhat annoying as I don’t generally like to carry much cash, but I do have other cards and can manage this situation, especially since I’ll be with relatives who can help me out if needed. I was just in panic mode when I found out this morning.
Since then I have showered, sprayed myself with a lot of Tom Ford Myrrhe Mystere, and come to my local Tex-Mex for some delicious shrimp tacos plus a very large top shelf frozen margarita–with salt, please!

Bummer about the banking hassles! I like your way of coping with it all though, shrimp tacos and a margarita would tend to put everything into perspective!

Getting credit or debit cards canceled stinks. Sorry.

The last 2 times my credit card got canceled, it was around travel time. Once I was actually ON a trip, staying in a hotel. That was really stressful, I had to have my husband call and cover the hotel cost, since he was not with me at the time, I was on a business trip.

I rarely use my debit card anymore. I think the credit card is safer. I also moved most of my money out of the bank at which I have my day to day “checking account”. Most of our money is stored in the equivalent of “mattress”, an account that we use for nothing but savings/storage.

Ugh, sorry you’re dealing with this. As an employee at a credit union, I’m pretty sure a very large bank should have a process to expedite sending you a new card. Sounds more like a “won’t” than “can’t” so shame on them. I’m glad you’ve found a workaround at least and hope you can enjoy your MI trip!

Happy Saturday, everyone! Started the day with a Fryman Canyon hike – got up and out while the morning fog was still keeping things cool. Lots of folks had the same idea, so the trail was more crowded than I like. A lovely hike, nonetheless.

I’m wearing Guerlain Heritage. It’s good stuff – well balanced, warm, slightly sweet, and a little spicy. I like it fine, but it doesn’t thrill me.

As a long time chronic allergy sufferer, I am always interested to hear what helps other people. I know there are some new ones that I haven’t tried, having found something that helped me a lot. What med or combo of meds work for you right now?

For years I had sinus headaches that only “real” Sudafed (none of this PE stuff, tyvm) combined with an NSAID would help. (There was also a migraine med that worked great, but doctors didn’t like prescribing it because it’s a barbiturate.) As I’ve aged, I’ve had to give up NSAIDs and real Sudafed, so now what works best is a prescription antihistamine spray called azelastine along with an OTC product that combines the PE stuff with acetaminophen. And coffee — caffeine has always helped with headaches.

It truly is a ‘yellow’ day! While weeding in the garden, I saw 2 male goldfinches in their beautiful yellow and black plumage visit my giant sunflowers that are in full bloom. Not only did they grace me with their presence, they sang me a sweet song of gratitude for providing them with their favorite treat, sunflower seeds. 🌻

Not this time. But years ago when my grandtwins were little and still shared a bedroom when they visited here, we planted giant sunflowers together right outside the bedroom window. Later that summer I lined up their favorite stuffed animals on the windowsill looking outside and took a photo of that scene from behind them. I had it made into a poster that hangs in my breakfast room each summer and reminds me of those precious days long ago – they’ll be 18 and headed off to college in just a few weeks.😢

Big white floral, like tuberose, gardenia, lily of the valley (LOTV) etc. Some can be really soft and pretty and others are very “go big or go home!”

I got samples of two Mind Games perfumes a few months ago with a purchase. Ruy Lopez was nice, what I generally think of as spicy and boozy. My notes tell me that The Forward is citrusy and OK, but the prices were silly, so I haven’t investigated any further.

I got a big batch of Mind Games samples from a nice SA and remember liking one quite a lot. They are all upstairs and I will go up soon to check which one it was. (I have a large contented cat purring on my lap right now.) They do seem like a lot of hype though with their clever names, extravagant bottle designs, and “concept” perfume creation. I’d have to really love one to pay the price for all that.

OK, the kitty moved, so I was free to go up and find my samples from Mind Games. I revisited Ruy Lopez, since Gaynor mentioned it, and I do think it’s very nice. It’s got black tea and I’m not generally a fan of tea scents, but if you are, you might really like it. The one I liked the most was As-Suli’s Diamond. It’s got some fruits, woods, and incense, and it is an intriguing scent. I recommend trying it, at least. Unfortunately, there is something in it that at times smells like a rubber note and that is what kept me from buying it. (Good to have an excuse. ) The official notes list includes a lot of stuff such as fig, broom, and ylang ylang.

Re large contented cat purring in lap, I laughed because that was always my kids’ excuse for anything they didn’t want to do – homework, set the table, take out trash, etc. I can’t Mom, Nosy (our cat) just settled. And since I was a sucker for happy kids petting purring cats, I’d let it slide.

Finishing up my Mimosa Adoration & Reverie week in the layered Chers Amis au Coeur du Jardin again – Prada Infusion de Mimosa and FM Iris Poudre.

Just ordered a FB of the Iris Poudre. After it arrives I’m going to have my own Iris appreciation week.

Question: is a decant what you receive from a NSTer from their FB while a sample is from a company?

I have my own arbitrary definition, so this probably isn’t useful!
A sample is one or two mls from anywhere, a decant is a larger amount, either shared by someone or a purchase from a site like The Perfumed Court or Surrender to Chance.

Same. I tend to think of a sample as anything up to 1-2ml in size, and a decant as something more like 5ml or more, regardless of where I got them.

This is from my AI search. A sample is usually a pre-packaged portion of perfume, sometimes provided by a perfume manufacturer or a retailer. A decant is a portion of perfume from a larger bottle into a smaller one. It is frequently done by using a pipette or a sterile syringe and can come in any sizes. What I have sent you have been decants. Many of the samples are on little cards from retailers.

I use the term the same as tulipani. A sample can be decanted from a bottle, but “a decant” usually refers to a larger amount, 5 mls or more.

Correct. If somebody takes 10 ml off their bottle and gives it to you, it’s a decant. If a company sells a 10 ml bottle, it’s a travel spray 🙂

For me, the difference between a sample and a decant is size. Samples are usually between 1 and 2mLs, while decants can be anywhere from 3mL up to 20mL. There is a bit of overlap between a decant and a travel spray, but travel sprays are typically manufacturer made.

I agree it’s more a size difference than source.
I take a sample as 1-3mls and decants I classify as anywhere from 5mls-even 100mls!
We have a local decant reseller and she does samples at 2ml(but decanted from a 100ml bottle) and decants from 5mls up to 50mls.So I guess it depends on source size as well!

I think of samples/decants more in terms of function – a sample is like first and second date, a very small amount just to see if you like the scent – enough for a brief test or two, and then maybe a full on application or two as well, just to see if you like it and it sits well on your skin, ad doesn’t offend your entourage, your know? (I have a special place for those samples, which, when asked if it smelled good to him, my ever diplomatic hubby damned with the faint praise, “It smells a lot!”) 🙂
If you do like it on first exposure, then you graduate to the honeymoon phase, obtaining a decant, whether a 5 ml carefully filled sprayer from a friend; some small amount, usually 5-10 ml, purchased from a decant reseller: or a 10-15 ml travel sized spray or roller from the company or a big retailer. This gives time for allergies, odd skin or emotional reactions, or just waking up one morning going, “Oh, my heavens this doesn’t smell good to me any more!”, to manifest themselves during the decant phase, and saves one time and money, and the hassle of figuring out how to pass on, trade or give away that expensive Full Bottle Which Just Doesn’t Work for You.
A Full Bottle is moving in together. Happy are the people who buy a Second Bottle, or Back up Bottles!

        Ha! So clever and true!

I usually skip the decant stage and just order as small a bottle as I can once I make up my mind from the sample. I have ordered 2 samples on occasion, since one was not enough to make up my mind.

I have forgotten to put perfume on for two days in a row, which I don’t think has happened in years. When I got home this afternoon, I stuck my hand in my perfume cabinet above a basket of decants and grabbed – it’s Zoologist Civet, and wow it smells great. I am too lazy to look up the notes and it’s just a lovely melange but I can pick out the coffee note and tuberose.
The weather here is perfect, 77F, low humidity and a cool breeze. I checked the garden and found dozens of cherry tomatoes, some big and some small, both yellow and red, they are so sweet and have that concentrated tomato flavor that is only in the home grown ones 🍅

I tried Tropical, the new Arquiste, yesterday. The first few minutes are an amazingly realistic fruit note, and it dries down quickly to a floral. It’s a very nice floral, it doesn’t grab me, but I recommend giving it a sniff.

It’s been a tumultous few days for me, I got laid off from my job. Not entirely surprised because I’m in higher ed, and it’s been rough times for colleges in recent months. But still, it’s been rather devastating, a blood bath as colleagues are calling it. I think I just feel so heartbroken, I loved my job and my colleagues, this all feels so senseless.

I’ve been trying to stay as positive as I can, just focusing on what I can control. There’s loads of annoying financial decisions to make, none of them particularly great. Fragrance has been a nice distraction. Today I’m sampling Carine Roitfeld Sebastian, it’s a happy, easy-to-wear tuberose.

I had been there for 20+ years, as was the case for several of my friends that got let go there, and loved my job. Hopefully, due to your education, that will help you find something else. I know that was the case with me. So glad to be retired now. Sending healing thoughts your way as you get on to the next chapter in your life.

SOTD = Guerlain Rose Cherie, one of the samples I was given in Paris when I bought a Guerlain lipstick, and the shop girl was so excited – she picked out the color of lipstick for me, since they were out of the one I was thinking of, but she chose well – I get complimented by discerning ladies of a certain age, who always say, “That is a really good color for you!” The Rose Cherie is nice but not FB worthy, it has some of those creamy lactones that don’t agree with me (like Memo Latin Quarter, which actively makes me nauseous), and it also has a hint of pepper, which I cannot abide by in perfumes, but it is mostly rose, and nicely blended and light enough for summer, so I don’t sniff deeply, but just wear it as a souvenir, and will not be replacing it when it is gone…
Yesterday was adorable hubbie’s 50th year class reunion, so we dressed up, for us, and went over to the golf course/watering hole and ate dry ham, even drier chicken, really good cheesy garlicy mashed potatoes, and some lovely white cake with white and blue icing, in a venue with a peaked roof ceiling covered in wood paneling, which looks lovely and echos like a sounding board, so it was almost impossible to really talk to people, it was so loud. Hubby saw many of his old friends, and I sat with some of the other spouses, one of whom told me that she had advocated going somewhere where else because the sound was so bad (her hubby was on the committee, so she did have a chance at having a say), but at this point it is a tradition, everyone complains about the sound while eating and then spills outside onto whatever golf hole is right next to the restaurant, where it was much easier to talk, and since it was a lovely evening, a good time was had by all. They had made yearbook pictures of everyone to wear as name tags. In 1975, 18 year old boys wore hair down to their shoulders, and my poor hubbie’s pic shows him with long, thick blond hair and an already receding hairline! The nice man who is now a pastor, after a career in banking, told me stories of working for hubbie’s father during the summers, baling hay and milking on weekends. One of the classmates who is a highly politicized poster on Facebook, was going around hugging everyone she saw. No politics were discussed. A good time was had by all, and today, I am learning how true it is, that once you fall off the no-carb wagon, the carb cravings roar back with a vengeance. No more cheesey potatoes and yummy white cake for this girl for a while. I mean, I could make some mashed potatoes with lots of garlic, smothered in cheddar cheese, but I will wait until cooler weather. 🙂 I could go get a Duncan Heinz white cake mix, and a can of cream cheese icing, but I will waiter for an appropriate excuse….Ah, wait, today is my mother’s birthday! But she preferred yellow cake….no, no, I just need to wait. LOL!

Hub waffled but finally decided to go. He was glad to hear news of people he had not seen for a long time, and appreciated the sad news of the loss of a few more people. The sense of connecting with their earlier selves seemed to make these mostly small town taciturn people really chatty. Hubby certainly was talking freely and for a long time with variety of people, and he rarely just hangs out and shoots the breeze. He said he had a better time than he expected.

I went to my 40th last fall. It was ruined by a regrettable setting, a shabby community center with terrible food. But the real tragedy was the venue INSISTED on playing the music so loud that we could not converse. Just perfect: bring a lot of near-60 year olds who already have some hearing loss and subject them to loud music and terrible lighting. I had flown across the country to attend and I would have liked to visit with the other classmates.

I am glad your hubby’s was better.

Another very pleasant day today, happy to spend the day at home again, relaxing, doing more weeding, and looking forward to the finale of Gorgeous Guy aka Grantchester tonight. Pork chops on the grill and fresh green beans from the garden for dinner later. 🍽️

SOTD is what I think of as Arnold Palmer aka YR Verte Envolee, lemon and black tea with a green accord and just a hint of spice . Very refreshing!

    Happy Sunday to all! 👩‍🌾

I used to watch it in the beginning but when they replaced the original vicar I lost interest. But earlier this year I saw a preview of this season with another replacement vicar whom I immediately fell in love with – Gorgeous Guy – and began watching again. Aside from that, yes, it’s very good. The mysteries are complex and the interpersonal relationship between the characters is just as good; I love all the characters. I highly recommend. 👍Yes, PBS is what I mostly watch and stream, have no other cable or streaming services and only watch a few programs on network tv.

Welp, I got out an oldie but goodie today that I’ve had for years – vintage Eau de Caron EdT. And as I put it on, it took my breath away, so beautiful, and another perfumista and I swear that it smells just like an EdT version of vintage Alpona, a long-gone fragrance from Caron’s glory days. I have now put my mini on the dresser for regular rotation. Why don’t I wear this more often?

And I still regret not buying Alpona! I had a scented tassel that I held onto for years to remind me, ha.

Quiet weekend. Back from vacation and glad to be home, did a lot of housework and odd things that needed to be done. Took a walk each day.

The usual August heat is back here, after a milder-than-usual July. I am wearing a sample of Ex Nihilo Vesper Glitz. Started out floral, ended up vanilla. I like it.

We are switched, we had a hotter than usual July and it is currently a cooler than usual August…although long way to go and I am not paying attention to the forecast.

Hope you had a wonderful vacation!

We have another air quality alert here. The air looks like it did in the 70’s. Remember how everything was sort of dull and hazy looking. Then the 80’s came and everything turned to neon. Lol.
My sotd is Shalimar Millesime Jasmin. I’m looking forward to bringing out my Fall scents soon. Not this week though, another heatwave is on its way.

We’re having very cool weather in Seattle. I’d much rather have this than hot weather, but my arms are actually cold as I sit in from of my window, which is so bizarre this time of year.

But I’ve been able to wear the kinds of perfumes that don’t usually make a showing in the summer. Today I’m in Ruh by Pekji Perfumes with notes of coffee, oud, cardamom, saffron, and rose. Yesterday was the delicious Vanille Havane by Les Indemodables, and Saturday was another by LI Patchouli Noisette. I finished off those LI samples, but I already want more Vanille Havane.

The first full week of August is going to be a hot one for me. Today’s high was around 95F or 35C. Drought is starting to creep back in to some areas along the Front Range. Might hit triple digits in the next 4 days.

Dealing with some very sore abs right now. I spent Friday and Saturday sneezing much more than usual. I figure allergies or poor air quality was the culprit. I stopped sneezing yesterday.

SOTD = Korres Avgoustos, from The Sample Stash. Starts off as a very nice woody fig fragrance, but that doesn’t last long. What lingers is an OK citrus scent.

A lazy afternoon at the pool is my favorite summer Monday activity and I indulged today; it’s both a nice end to the weekend and a nice start to the week. Not totally lazy, really, as I alternate swimming as an exercise with lounging and catching up on my reading , which I don’t do enough of.

Post pool-shower I’ve been enjoying Love2Love Orange Blossom & White Musk edt layered over BBW Endless Weekend body products. Post swim I prefer light and refreshing scents and this combo fits that nicely. Maurice Roucel is the nose behind the Orange Blossom & White Musk, he who is also the nose behind another orange blossom scent, Hermes 24 Faubourg.

Wishing everyone a great week ahead!
