Thursday scent of the day 7/31

Posted by Robin on 31 July 2025 87 Comments

It's Almost-Friday and Almost-August, plus World Ranger Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Berdoues Assam of India.

Reminder: on 8/1, rabbit rabbit rabbit! It's August. Wear a fragrance that will bring you peace, happiness or good luck for the month.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good morning, one and all! SOTD = Mon Precieux Nectar, not sure this hits the CP goal at all, but this is one of my prettiest scents, and always dependable. Today in the heat it seems pretty sweet, but it is soooo pretty, sweet is ok!
I made my cornbread this morning with cornmeal, agave syrup, sorghum flour and real butter, and it is very very tasty, if I do say so myself. It is good to get up and bake at 5:30 in the morning. It makes that second cup of tea at 9:30 very satisfying!
    Have a good good day!

I wish I could get up at 5:30 and bake! I cannot get up at 5:30 for anything really. But that does sound delicious.

I come from a long line of semi-nomadic sheep herders, need to get up when the stock decides to leave the bed ground. Now, at 3:00 pm I am ready for a nappie.

It is a very simple and easy recipe.
      1 cup cornmeal
      1 cup sorghum flour
      1/2 cup butter (one stick)
1/4 cup sugar or agave syrup or honey
      1 tsp baking powder
      1 tsp baking soda
      1/2 tsp salt
      2 eggs
1 cup buttermilk or 1 c milk with 1 tsp lemon juice added right before mixing.
      Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Melt butter in 8 or 9 inch square pan, let cool.
Mix all dry ingredients together in big bowl.
In small bowl, whip wet ingredients (not including butter) until eggs , milk and liquid sweetener if using, are combined.
Pour wet ingredients into big bowl. Pour melted butter on and stir until just combined.
Pour into baking pan. Smooth top. Bake for 20 minutes. Yum yum. If you like savory, halve the sweetener and stir in some bacon crumbles and finely chopped onion instead.

The cool front has arrived! It’s 60F and raining and very refreshing. Heads up for those in the eastern US, relief from the heat is on the way.
    Sotd is Seville l’Aube.
My husband brought home the first eggplant from the garden we have at my mom’s house. It is absolutely beautiful, like a picture. I will roast it and make a dip out of it later today, since I can finally use the oven.

When we visited with Mr. Laila’s nephew last week, he gave me a zucchini from his garden that was the size of a small club or baseball bat! I could hardly fit it in my fridge. Not sure what I will do with it yet.

Another random eye catcher, Scent Trunk Salt. Inspired by the Utah Salt Flats. Fairly weird, salt/aquatic/floral. I have a few of the 5ml travel sprays and that’s just about the right amount. Finally cooler today!

The heat wave is finally gone. We will be in the mid 80s now, but the humidity is so high that it still feels very uncomfortable. We are expecting thunderstorms this afternoon. I am sure it will be too muggy after that.

Wearing Guerlain Vetiver, airy and refreshing for the summer season!
    Happy Thursday! 🌞

Rabbit rabbit rabbit, August has arrived cold and dark but at least July has passed. The Chinese Witch Hazel is now blooming brightly in the graveyard, one of the first trees to bloom though I noticed a bright pink camellia yesterday. It’s so nice to see these flashes of colour when everywhere is grey and forlorn. I watched Paul Schrader’s Master Gardener last night, and enjoyed seeing the garden itself. Not as good as First Reformed but a good watch. Wearing Marrakech Intense today which is a nice basic perfume for a chilly day.

Joy may be too strong a word to describe my emotion when I turned off the a/c this morning and opened all the windows, but I don’t think so, after what seemed like the heat and humidity would never end. But it did! Finally, a beautiful 🌞, warm, but non-sticky day🙏. I know those of you on the East coast are having a difficult weather day, but I hope my weather is coming your way soon.🤞

After a few errands this morning, grocery and cat food shopping, I’ve been enjoying this day in the last of my July seaside scents, JM Wood Sage and Sea Salt 🌊. I’ve failed miserably on my commitment to weed the garden, so am going to renew my vow once again and head outside now and for a good part of the weekend.

    Happy Thursday! 👩‍🌾

Yesterday I visited our wonderful niche perfume store Kuhl-Linscomb (which is actually one of those sprawling “lifestyle” shops with lots of stuff for the home, clothes, jewelry, toys, books, watches, kitchenware, furniture, linens, stationery, you-name-it), and sprayed on a giant blast of Arquiste Almond Suede. It’s something I keep wanting but can’t make up my mind about. Yesterday was the same, it’s somehow addictive but just so thick and kind of heavy, really is like putting on some soft gloves or something. I can still smell it on my arm 24 hours later! It’s got giant staying power and I love the dry down. I looked up reviews on Fragrantica and they are all over the place. Too much almond, can’t smell the almond. Not sweet, too sweet. Just like a marzipan, can’t smell any marzipan. Smells like concrete, smells like gasoline, smells like citrus, smells like honey. Smells like suede, smells like a dentist’s chair, smells like old leather boots. Crazy. It’s definitely not a safe blind buy. One thing people do seem to agree on is that it’s thick, which was my impression yesterday. I am not sure what it could be in a perfume that makes it smell thick, but there you have it.

K-L which used to be very open and permissive and fun to visit has, since my last visit, become highly policed, in the sense of posting signs that say “Spray only on cards, ask for one, numbers are strictly limited.” Also, “no photography permitted.” “No making of decants.” I didn’t talk to any of the SA’s but it made me think some people must have really been misbehaving in there, which is a shame. We had something unique and precious there.

Robin, if you need any CP ideas for next week, I was thinking about “wear your favorite summer citrus scent, or if you’re in the Southern hemisphere, your favorite winter citrus scent.” Or could be wear something with a bergamot or lemon or orange note (pick one of those or have them all as options).

Today I’m in Aedes de Venustas Signature just because I felt like wearing it.

Quite the weird looking sunrise here this morning, with a bright red sun in a grey sky. Most of the smoke is from wildfires in Utah and Arizona. But some fires are burning on the other side of Colorado as well.

Yep, as nice as our day was, some parts of the city were very hazy from the Canadian wildfires; it was only a little hazy where I’m at. Nevertheless, various reports said Chicago had the worst air quality today anywhere, rated in the unhealthy zone but nearing very unhealthy.
