Tuesday scent of the day 7/22

Posted by Robin on 22 July 2025 124 Comments

It's Tuesday, National Mango Day and National Hammock Day. Birthdays: Edward Hopper, Alexander Calder, Tom Robbins, Oscar de la Renta, S. E. Hinton. RIP Malcolm-Jamal Warner. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Diptyque Philosykos, which features in the Cormoran Strike novel Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith aka JK Rowling (I learned this on Reddit, having long since forgotten learning it while reading the book). Tea at the moment is Cascadia Breakfast from The Jasmine Pearl Tea Co.

Reminder: 7/25 will be Mystery & Crime Friday...for Josephine Tey's birthday, interpret the theme any way you like...you can scent your favorite fictional detective (or villain); you can wear something that brings to mind a favorite mystery novel, film or genre; or maybe your perfume name contains a reference to a crime, a criminal, or a crime fighter. Suggested by Glannys.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Druggist Teapot from Jonathan Adler ("Expand horizons with Jonathan Adler's dreamy third-eye mindscapes. Featuring delft-inspired blues and accented with real sparking gold, the Druggist teapot is crafted from glossy high-fired porcelain") is $185 at Saks.

    Hello.
Sotd is Atelier Cologne Musc Imperial. Picked this one up over the weekend. Apparently they revamped the concentrations of their perfumes so they all now contain higher oil %.
Apparently Hermes Barenia is releasing an Intense version soon. Sounds tempting.

My Andy Tauer samples should have arrived yesterday but arriving today. I am thinking of either Apres L’ondee or Jicky for Friday. It would suit the time period for the Leiberman Papers. It’s early 20th century Vienna. Wearing Clinique Happy today.

Do report back w/ your thoughts on the Tauer samples. I had not realized that Vanilla Flash and Rose Flash were officially discontinued. I was a bit disappointed to see the two new absolues are absolutely more expensive too. 😉

Hoping your mom is doing well too.

Morning! I’m in eau d’Hadrien, with an extra bit of Gutal goodness-a small spritz of Heure Exquise. I remember smelling HE about 25 years ago and recoiling-never fails-I recoil, then get intrigued, then succumb to the fragrance. I bought the last bottle I could find on a discount site-I didn’t realize how many Goutal scents have been discontinued.

I can def get behind National mango day, paired with national hammock day 🙂

Twins! And I get what you mean about Heure Exquise — I did that too but have yet to succumb. I keep a small decant on hand just in case, so maybe someday!

For me it had a faint but distinct whiff of old vase water, so I ended up passing it along to a friend, who had no problems with it.

That is a great description of coming around to love a challenging fragrance. Perhaps the galbanum was what stopped you. I go back and forth on Heure Exquise. Sometimes it’s too dry and formal and astringent for me. The EdP is a bit sweeter, but not much.

    Good morning, everyone.
I’m in “Fire At Will” from Jovoy – a bomb of vanilla, toasted marshmallow, and brown sugar. As crazy sweet as that sounds, it’s got a gentle muskiness that keeps it beautifully balanced. And somehow, to my nose, it’s not cloying!

I’ve tried a bunch from their line – I’m especially fond of “Psychédélique,” a potent vanilla/patchouli. But “Fire At Will” is just a delight to wear.

Hands-down favorite is Agar Ébène, closely followed by Cèdre Sambac. I’m a very timid layerer and so far have only toyed with layering Hermessences in my mind. 😆 I do wonder if the rose in Myrrhe Églantine would blend well with the jasmine in Cèdre Sambac.

Bright and sunny but, at last, neither hot nor humid (we’ve had an awful stretch of that), and I’m wearing the exhilarating 1977 Eau de Courrèges, a vivid lime & vetiver cologne, probably my best blind buy ever.

No, but even if they couldn’t keep the original formula (no oakmoss in it nowadays, for starters), I think they could still do it justice: it’s hard to mess up the classic cologne structure, and the notes sound promising (still based on lime and vetiver plus more cologney citrus, some patchouli to ground everything instead of the oakmoss). I see you can get it for a song on Fragrancenet: I probably would!

So many favorite detectives and other crime unravelers! I would scent Miss Marple in a single spritz of Borsari Violet di Parma, Archie Goodwin in Eau Sauvage, Armand Gamache in something very subtle and forest-y. Peter Wimsey is giving me trouble, though — I have a feeling he would wear something so expensive and exclusive that there’s no hope I would ever have heard of it, let alone have any familiarity with it. However, I think it’s possible that Lord Peter’s love, Harriet Vane, might have worn my SOTM, Eau d’Hadrien, and I will take points as she is something of a detective in her own right.

Going to wearing Shalimar Millésime Jasmin today methinks. I watched Persolaise’s review of it yesterday…he wasn’t a fan of the opening but enjoyed the development and dry down. I love it now but initially wasn’t that impressed w/ it either. I found it kind of generic and underwhelming at first but w/ subsequent wearings it seemed to change and expand. Sometimes I wonder about maceration and letting a little air on the line as it were once sprayed and the effects on the juice.

I have gone down the rabbit hole catching up on Persolaise’s videos from the last couple years which is making me want to try and buy more perfumes…strange how that is. 😆 I love his descriptions and, of course, his accent too but his expressions may be the best part. He really loves sniffing perfume and that joy is so evident in his facial expressions and reactions. I watch him and think…hmm, he really get it…eheheh and by it I suppose I mean my own fascination w/ fragrance. All of this is to say, YouTube has its merits. 😉

It was blissfully cool this morning. Like many here, we are expecting the big heat wave to set up tomorrow. But since it was cool when I got dressed, I put on some Lattafa Khamra. It needs a citrus body spray to lift it a little, I may put on some Phlur vanilla hair mist later to smooth out the spice.

There was some much needed rain last night and it was mostly cloudy today, 22C. My first purchase of this quarter having arrived, I was in vintage Après l’ondée today, definitely stronger and more clovey than the current iteration, and tonight Lush Butterball oil which smells of milk chocolate, very realistic, I’m not a big chocolate fan in perfumes, I think I have 3 or 4 max but I didn’t have a milk chocolate, I also have 30ml of the perfume.

Beautiful and unusual summer day in the upper 70s with very low humidity. At least we are having a relief from the uncomfortable muggy days we have had recently.

Today it would be my mother’s 86th birthday. A bittersweet day. I am indulging in a couple of pieces of black sesame seed mochi to celebrate her life in some way. She loved mochi. They are very tasty! I may need to buy more to store for the rest of the summer.
    Happy Tuesday! 🌻

Great idea! Our entire family loves mochi. I also make a mochi cake using sweet glutinous rice flour and coconut milk that gets devoured quickly. Wearing She & Male by Len from a sample and it’s very nice. The label says Indigo Perfumery in Cleveland, so I suppose it’s a collaboration. Notes are iris, vetiver, neroli, musk, put together in an interesting way.

With the heat and humidity fast-approaching, I forced myself to go out early this morning into the garden for some much-needed weed-pulling. It’s been really neglected, mostly due to the heat/humidity – I can’t bear to go outside then – but when zi do, instead of bringing me joy, it’s been depressing. Just a brief start, but it felt good, and I uncovered the catnip plant, nasturtiums, and we picked a whole bunch of green beans and the last 3 gooseberries the birds left for us. 😋

SOTD could be another ‘cheap and cheerful,’ Ellen Tracy Bronze. A soft sparkling lemonade joined by a pretty violet note and a touch of powder. Nice!

Steak salad for dinner tonite 🍽️ and book discussion at the library later. Enjoy the evening!🌛

Thank you. I did. Part of the fun of participating in a book discussion group is hearing others’ perspectives that I never thought of when reading the book.

Yes, they enjoy the fresh catnip ( I only give them a leaf or two at a time – they’re indoor cats). They also really like the cat grass I have in little pots inside the house as well as the dry treats they get. As well as the toys in every room, various climbing structures to sit in, cushy beds, etc. Spoiled much?😻😻😻

I forgot to put on perfume today, which happens only very rarely. To compensate I’m wearing a gorgeous light perfume to bed, Angéliques sous la pluie.

    RIP Ozzy Osbourne. 😢

I am one of the resident metalheads here at NST, so this hits close to home. Godspeed. 🤘

SOTD = commando. I noticed a bit of skin irritation where I have been wearing perfume, so taking a break. I’ll see what it looks like tomorrow…

I got a news alert on my phone about Ozzy today. I knew it was coming but it still was a shock.
I saw him once around the later 80s. R.I.P.

“Car in the shop” twins today. I had just left my house in the morning when some “engine power is reduced” light came on and car went into “limp mode”. Luckily, dealership is on my way to work and I pulled in. But husband had to pick me up and take me home to get a spare car for the day. At least we own an extra car. The repair won’t be too bad and should be done by end of tomorrow.

Wearing Goldfield and Banks Sunset Hour from a travel spray.
