Wednesday scent of the day 7/16

Posted by Robin on 16 July 2025 109 Comments

It's Hump Day plus World Snake Day. Birthdays: Ida B. Wells, Ginger Rogers, Cal Tjader, Anita Brookner, Will Ferrell. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm hitting the road today for some lake time up north...I'll be off the internet most of the day. I'm wearing my own cheap and cheerful DIY lotion with ylang and sweet orange.

Reminder: on 7/18, we're doing Cheap & Cheerful Friday. Suggested by ringthing.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Today felt like an angry-roses sort of day so I’m in Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme. (As soon as I wrote “angry roses” I realized that I have at least four scents that fit that description. It’s a whole category of its own!)

Angry roses sounds like a category worth exploring further! I’m positive we’d all love to know what other scents you feel fall into it.

SL La Fille de Berlin is absolutely an angry rose, and the queen of the category is ELdO Eau de Protection — so dark, so cruel! And Lush Rose Jam isn’t quite angry, but it’s getting there — sort of peevish, maybe? Certainly not light/airy/floral, at least not on my skin.

I have no problem with lovely roses: Patou Joy is one of the greatest scents ever, and Sophia Grojsman conjured up some wonders like YSL Paris and Lancôme Trésor. But mostly I like my roses with a bit of spite to them.

So, roses which have kept some of their thorns perhaps! I quite like the idea of a peevish rose. I may have to look into acquiring a fragrance to wear on my thornier days.

My SOTD is possibly the ultimate “cheap and cheerful” scent – 4711 Original Cologne.

We’ve been a bit worried about Kora lately – she keeps throwing up from time to time, although she seems healthy otherwise. So yesterday I called the vet, and this morning we took her in for blood tests. The results should be ready in a few hours. I hope it’s nothing serious.

I hope she’s ok and just has a bug. My cat Tipper was not well recently, just not eating at all, but the tests showed nothing wrong. The vet said sometimes cats can just get a bug like humans do, and then they get better. Which she did! And I hope Kora will, too.

It’s possible, considering the bloodwork showed low leukocytes. But this has been going on for over a month – she’ll get better and have a normal week, then suddenly vomit again. She recently turned 11, which makes her a senior kitty, and she had never been tested before. So we decided it’s better to err on the side of caution.

Thank you all! The results are in, and I discussed them with the vet. A few things are off, but nothing really alarming. The vet said that some of the results could be due to stress or even a technical error. She still recommended giving her some supplements like vitamins and immunity boosters and coming back in a month to repeat the tests.

I’m in a generous amount of Hermes Pamplemousse Rose-it’s such a cheerful summer scent, and I love the colour of the bottle.

Hope everyone’s day has at least one small cheerful thing. Sometimes we have to look for it, other times it falls in your lap. I’ll choose the linden bush at my place-I had a huge linden tree which cam down in a hurricane a few years ago. The stump was left, and the tree put down suckers. They are so thick and so tall, and they flower like the tree did. The whole thing is buzzing with the sound of bees and the air is so fragrant.

Cheap but fun sotd is Moschino Toy 2 Bubble Gum! Smells exactly like pink Hubba Bubba (Is there any other kind? Pink is the ONLY flavour to go!) but also like a true bubble gum, the fun phase fades rather quickly.

Something cheerful my son said to me this morning. He mentioned that he really loved it when I was studying Italian! Even though we did our trip 2 years ago and I stopped my lessons, he asked me if I would go back so that he can learn and we can go to Italy one day in the future! That really made my day! So on my list is “studying Italian” lol

I had one of those rough sleepless nights that ends in sleeping late, so my day is all discombobulated. But I smell great in Zoologist Bee, the travel size is comparatively cheap to a full bottle, and it’s definitely cheerful and delicious. And TCM is celebrating Barbara Stanwyck’s birthday with a day of her movies, so I can take things slowly today.

Cheap and cheerful with Fragonard Bel Oranger – 100ml for $77 plus they usually throw in some gift – tea towel, tote bag… you have to respray mid day but why not? I rarely buy 100ml of anything these days but don’t mind when it’s both inexpensive and light enough to go ham.

Cheap and cheerful for me is Tocade by Rochas. Rose and vanilla and turning darker/ambery with some of the vintage Rochas animalic growl as it progresses. I never hear anyone talk about this one and I don’t wear it often but it really hits the spot when I do. Really cute bottle too. It was definitely cheap when I bought it and I just looked online and yup, still cheap. Buy the vintage version if you can, as people say it’s been reformulated. Not sure how you tell unless it’s listed that way on the resale sites. I think Luca Turin liked it too for what it’s worth.

I’m in vintage Stetson, which I love. (It’s “for men,” but that shouldn’t deter anyone from wearing it.) It’s cheap, though “cheerful” isn’t a word I’d choose to describe it. I guess I’m halfway compliant, though the idea of a drugstore cheapie being so good does bring a smile to my face.

Cheap and Cheerful for me today is Zara’s Orange Nomad. It smells like shaving cream that is scented with oranges, orange blossom, and also some of wood from the tree. I don’t quite know how to describe the shaving cream aspect of it, but it is a sharp coolness and also foamy/creamy, if that makes sense.

Tea today is the last of my Margaret’s Hope Darjeeling from Clipper Ship. I’m not big on darjeeling generally, but I have enjoyed this one.

I have a couple of samples from a swap awhile back. From my brief sampling notes for Tempete d’Automne, I wrote Egoiste + vetiver, and I think I quite liked it. For Le Loden, I wrote masculine-leaning, menthol-ish patchouli. I’ll have to try it again, I can’t remember if I liked it.

My brand new bottle of Baiser Volé arrived yesterday, so that is what I am wearing today.

sotd = Hiris + Eau de Guerlain

It’s a combo that works. I think of Hiris as a “cool” iris perfume and Eau de Guerlain has a cooling minty cologne feel. 💙💚

My new phone decided to autocorrect Hiris to Horus, which kind of fits since I think Horus was a protection figure, and Hiris feels like protection too.

I’ve decided today is my Let’s Not Take Things Too Seriously Day. That means dance party in the kitchen starting . . . NOW!!! 🪩

Things have been a little busy lately so I’m a little behind on my NST reading, but I’m popping in to say hi and that I’m wearing 4711 Acqua Colonia Lemon and Ginger for the cp today. I keep that one and Guerlain Eau de Cologne Imperiale in the fridge for hot days, and today is one of those days! I’ve already refreshed myself with my SOTD multiple times and my SO put on the Guerlain to cool himself down.

Thankfully, there is a good breeze this evening, and it’s starting to cool down in here. The cold colognes do help so much!

Spent the day in Jour d’Hermes. Definitely cheerful, but not so cheap. 🙂

At least at the discounters Jour d’H is nicely affordable.

It’s almost chilly here today! A cold front snuck thru last night, and temps were in the upper 50’s this morning. I’m not sure it made it to 80 this afternoon. Had unsettled weather with rain earlier, and might have more later on this evening. A good day to stay inside doing laundry.

SOTD = still in PMC Essence de Patchouli.

50!? That is chilly. It looks like anything severe will stay south of me. I’m getting rain though. We really need it here.

I think the low here was 57 or 58. These temps will be gone by tomorrow. But the unsettled weather will remain.

My parents used to say that if you didn’t like the current weather in Colorado, just wait 5 minutes and it will change.

I have been enjoying Essence de Patchouli.
