Friday scent of the day 7/11

Posted by Robin on 11 July 2025 209 Comments

Happy Friday! It's also Free Slurpee from 7-Eleven day, plus World Population Day (that would be about 8.2 billion). Birthdays: James Abbott McNeill Whistler, EB White, Jhumpa Lahiri. Our community project for today: imagine you are an astronaut and you've just returned to earth after nine months in space. What scent did you miss most, and what perfume would you reach for? Thanks go to Kanuka for the suggestion!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I think what I would miss the most is the smell of real flowers, so I'm in the perfume from my collection that smells the most like real flowers: Aftelier Candide. (My runners up, but I have only a few drops left of each, would be CB I Hate Perfume On A Clear Day You Can See Forever or April Aromatics Jasmina; if I still had any at all I would have considered Hiram Green Moon Bloom.)

Reminder: on 7/18, we're doing Cheap & Cheerful Friday. Suggested by ringthing.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I understand that your sense of smell is diminished in space (possibly a good thing), so I would probably wander around sniffing absolutely everything. The real-world scent I’d miss the most would be fresh lilacs, so I hope I come back from orbit when they’re at their peak. The constructed fragrance I’d want to smell first, and I apologize that this is my answer to every question, is Parfum d’Hermès extrait, because it’s so amazingly complicated and detailed, everything I love in one place.

Ha, it is very useful to have a limited number of perfume answers to every cp…I have said before that I think I could come up with a set of 5-6 fragrances that would cover everything, especially if one of them was Guerlain Cologne du 68. (Which probably doesn’t have any more notes than usual but takes the trouble to tell you all 68.)

    Hello and tgif!
I am leaving my greatest back-to-Earth food craving till last: bread. I am channeling that through Uncle Serge’s wonderful Jeux de Peau.
I had a rough night’s sleep, I think I only got 2hrs in. Powering through with strong black mind buzzing coffee. I am seeing many more cups of this today.

Omg, I have to share my space related story. It’s my first and probably last time I’ll back a project on Kickstarter.
The project I chose to back was “The Smell of Space Perfume”. The spiel was that they captured and reproduced the smell of space according to reports from astronauts and NASA. Isn’t that something? I also had a friend who’s a huge Star Wars fan so I thought it’d make a great gift so I backed a 2 bottle package. Fast forward to shipping day, the tracking said it shipped from China (What..? I thought it was an US based project… Red flag? Hmm.) Turned out my suspicions were correct, no further updates after that and nobody received their perfumes and everybody got scammed. Ughhhhh!

Terrible that they spoofed their address location. You might’ve been a little more cautious if you knew from the beginning where it was coming from.

I think I would miss the warmth of the sun, the smell of flowers, the coolness of tree shade, the softness of grass… Many perfumes could capture that feeling, but L’Artisan La Chasse aux Papillons seems to be designed to embody it: “Long, sunny days and meadows full of flowers in bloom, wispy white clouds and butterflies float above” (from the L’Artisan website).

And that’s why I am wearing it today!

If I was coming back from space, or anywhere for that matter, where I hadn’t had access to perfume for that long, I would want to douse myself in one of my favorites. SOTD is Chanel 31 Rue Cambon.

Like Glannys, would most miss the sun and the flora. This isn’t a fave, just a sample tryout–Marlou’s Heliodose, with notes of tiare, indole, musk and galbanum. It is nice, but think today’s extremely muggy, sticky weather is interfering with my enjoyment of this one.
Will be interested to re-try in fall/winter.

For the past 2 or 3 days, I have been going through my clothes and have gotten rid of anywhere between 1/3 to 1/2 of them. What I am getting rid of is being donated. I was doing the CP yesterday with Amouage Epic. I have so many perfumes that I would miss but I had a hankering for Epic and not Lyric. After my shower, I will be wearing Clinique Happy.

We got the lab results on Sydney from her vet visit. Everything is fine in terms of bloodwork but her potassium is a little on the low side. The vet said that the bump on her eyelid isn’t a a sty because it’s in the wrong spot. She doesn’t think it is cancer but within the next month we do need to schedule surgery due to it’s location and the margins are not that big.

I would miss the most the salty smell of the ocean, the sea air.
I am wearing L’Artisan Un Air de Bretagne, my favorite marine scent. Other favorites are Hermes Eau de Merveilles Bleue, Hermes Epice Marine, Comptoir Sud Pacifique Aqua Motu, Demeter Salt Air.

    Happy Friday! 🌊🏝

The Demeter is just a very salty, fresh scent. Plain and simple. It doesn’t compare at all with Eau de Merveilles Bleue which is a more complex scent, with a great salty, cold mineral aspect and also the driftwood, citrus and seaweed notes that are present and enjoyable all the time.

You guys, I’m having one of those NOW I get it! moments that we’ve all had. I’ve been feeling self-indulgent the past 18 hours or so, and decided to combine that with my forest theme for this week. Last night’s bedtime scent was the remains of a dabber of Sous le Vent, and decided that’s what a forest in heaven smells like. But that wasn’t The Moment. No, this morning I retrieved the dabber of Bois des Îles extrait from purgatory where it’s been languishing for about 10 years, and that’s when it finally registered properly in my brain. It’s far too late to acquire any more of it, however, so I will treasure the few remaining drops, and put this one on the unobtainables list along with Hermes Doblis and the aforementioned Sous le Vent. C’est la vie! 🙂

Box of eels is my choice for today’s CP too, and it’s kind of cheating because it evokes, wonderful exotic sandalwood forests as well as a meadow of flowers. Plus, it is just beauty personified, a work of abstract art that I would also miss in space. I hope you can track some down, SheriG.

After nine months in space I think there are lots of things I would have missed. Silence, for one, I think a space station or a space ship has lots of background noise that would bother me if it never stopped. For smells, I think I would miss the smell (and taste!) of fresh food the most, so I am wearing Orange Sanguine today.

Hi all, my SOTD is Tiempe Passate by Antonia’s Flowers. It’s the perfect salty, amber, rock rose, driftwood scent of my childhood on Eastern Long Island.
FYI, it’s been re-released and is available on the website. I reached out to the company and they are working on re-releasing the original Antonia’s Flowers. So that’s pretty good news! The reddit conversation/buzz is pretty good. The re-release is pretty good!

I’m headed out in a little bit to my PT appointment. Everyone have a good Friday!

I took a personal day today. I am about to do some cleaning and then later getting my mammogram done. Thanks to someone who posted about theirs a few weeks ago, making me schedule an appointment.
If I were in Space, I would miss the smell of Spring in the morning. It smells and sounds like happiness and hope. My sotd is Carven L’eau de toilette it reminds me of dewy grass.

Oh, I think that was me with the mammogram, I’m glad it prompted you to get it done! Unfortunately I have to go back for another one, along with an ultrasound, because they want to get a second look in an area. ☹️ Fingers crossed it’s nothing.

Fingers crossed, tulipani. I think call backs are pretty common…I had to go back once and was all clear but waiting for the follow-up appointment and result was still nerve-racking.

Yes, the doctor’s letter did say this is quite common and most re-scans don’t result in any findings but like you said, it’s no fun waiting!

I had the same thing happen with my mammogram in 2023. Something looked a little odd the first time, so I got called back for another mammogram and an ultrasound. Fortunately, it proved to be nothing worth worrying about.

I’m in a bunch of aldehydes because maybe I would miss that “partial oxidation” to which I’d become accustomed.

I started with Caleche, then spritzed No. 22 and found myself floating in the clouds.

I think I’d really miss enjoying a cup of steaming hot tea on my return to earth. I think drinking a warm beverage in space just wouldn’t be the same without the steam and smells. So I thought about wearing Russian Tea, but it’s going to be too warm today for that. Instead I chose L’Heure Fougueuse which does have a maté note.

    Happy friday to all!

Yesterday I wore Philtre and today I am in Souffle de Lumière.

Word on the street suggests we will get Shalimar L’Essence this fall. I hope we get that and a new Millésime…note the and statement…not an or…ehaeheh troubled times call for more flankers. 😅

I lightly cooked the defrozen forest fruits of yesterday with a little bit of honey, it’s my dessert.

This morning I sprayed a sample, Lanvin Mon éclat edt, an inoffensive little perfume, not offensive but nothing to write home about and for the CP tonight it’s Cacharel Eden to represent earth, it’s my weirdest scent I always say, I used the modern version as the vintage, deeper and with more patchouli would be a little much on this 31C day. On a whim I also went to the perfume cabinet to retrieve Germaine Monteil Galoré parfum de toilette and it smells wonderful as usual, I always confuse it with Louis Féraud Justine for some reason, perhaps I had bought them around the same time, I seem to remember Lillyjo had mentioned that Galore was quite expensive in the US while here I got it for little.

Oh dear, that’s crazy expensive, I checked and paid £29.99 in 2022. Now, it really is a good perfume but it’s reminiscent of Chanel No 5 EDT, only a little sweeter, so if you know or own that it gives you an idea of Galoré.

I’m really enjoying seeing everyone’s choices. I love the summer scent of haymaking, whether it’s wheat, or ryegrass. The smell drifts across the valley to my house during late December when the paddocks are mown. The sweetness and earthiness with a mix of clover, ‘ bread’ and almost-almond/ coconut nuttiness. I don’t have a hay scent though I did once have a sample of Epidor which I liked. So, I’m sticking with a farm theme and going with woodcut, for the smell of a freshly sawn woodpile.

This has been a fascinating CP and so I thank Kanuka for suggesting it. I agree with many who thought that the returning astronaut would enjoy earth smells like flowers, oceans, soil, rain, forests, and so on. I also thought the astronaut would have missed smells of home and cooking like bacon and coffee–but I don’t have anything with those notes! So instead I’ve put on Azemour Les Oranges. That’s in part because I guess I had breakfast and orange juice on my mind, and also because our forecast high is 98F today and Azemour works so well in the heat. (Fortunately, I guess, because we’re having rain and thunderstorms, it’s only 89 so far.)

I’ve been wearing all my top favs this week. Yesterday was 10 Corso Como and today is Tam Dao. Tam Dao is one of just a handful of perfumes I’ve replaced, and I recently got a BUB of 10CC, so I’m good.

Found out some exciting news this week. I’ve been accepted to graduate school!🤩 I’m excited and also a bit nervous. Maybe this is a crazy undertaking at my age. My mom retired when she was my age, but I’ve been percolating on this for a few years. Some of you may (or may not) remember I completed my BSN a few years ago. When I went to the graduation, one of my professors was there and she said to me, “you should go on,” and those 4 little words burrowed into my brain and have been taking up headspace ever since. I’ve researched a lot of programs and found the perfect fit almost in my backyard, literally. A local, private college with an online program designed for working adults. Win win. After madtownteen left for college last fall I spent a fair amount of time reflecting on what I wanted to do next, and I decided this was it!

Lovely! I should wear this more often because not only is it good but I also have a vat of it! I had a haircut this morning and wore my howmanysprays8 this afternoon.

So my brother / SIL / Granddaughter K. were supposed to come this past Tuesday. He participated in a bike ride the week before and had sciatica upon his return. The worst position to be in was sitting, but with medication and acupuncture (not sure if he did this), they’ve rescheduled to come on Wednesday instead. Wouldn’t you know it but my nephew ended up having dangerously low sodium on Monday and was rushed to the ICU for a titrated sodium replacement. This nephew is currently taking Ozempic and I will not describe what happened to him (vs. what happened to my BIL who was taking Mountjaro). All I can say is each had the opposite effect. All our plans were thrown into chaos but at the proverbial end of the day, no one traveled which I think was the best final end result!

I am looking forward to a fuss-free weekend!

Yikes! You’ve had more than your fair share of family drama lately!

I hope you have a nice, boring weekend.

L’Eau is an easy one to do the eight sprays!

This has been a great CP, I’ve found it very hard to decide which smells I’d miss most – I’ve been nodding in agreement to everyone’s comments.
I went for complete overkill with Amouage Memoir last night, that lasts for weeks on clothes – I should have worn that before lift off and I’d have been able to smell it for the 9 months!
It’s very wet and dull today, so I think I’ll try to summon spring with the beautifully green Scherrer.

I think I would crave comfort and familiarity the most, so I have chosen my ultimate comfort scent, Paris YSL.

I also think I’d most want to smell flowers and plants when getting back to Earth so I went with AG Eau de Camille today. I’m smelling green and grassy.

A coolish day here for the height of summer. It was only 84 degrees here. I would horribly miss Teflon kitty if I was away from her for 9 months. She would probably be upset, too. Her fur smells similar to Annick Goutal’s Musc Nobile, especially on top of her head, between her ears. I don’t have any of my sample left, or I would have worn that today.

Demeter speed sniffing rundown, for the curious:

Gingerale = exactly what it says on the label. It even smells fizzy, too!

Thunderstorm = initially hard to describe. After sniffing it several times, I can pick out ozone and wet earth notes.

Jasmine = lovely green jasmine. Not indolic at all.

Frankincense = creamy incense on the masculine side. Does not have the citrus top note I associate with frankincense.

Iris Purple = a dead ringer for Choward’s Violet candies. Smells like sweet Parma violets to me.

Myrrh = OMG! This is good! Incense lovers should try this one.

Holy Water = a run of the mill aquatic. No incense that I can detect. Not my thing at all.

SOTD = Demeter Fragrance Orchid Collection Calypso. It’s quite pretty: floral, a little sweet, a little spicy, and a hint of citrus. It’s one of the best that I picked up in my Demeter rampage last month. Figured I go with something that reminded me of flowers today.

Oops, that should have been Musc Nomade, not Nobile. Should have double checked the name.

The Demeter website is the best place to get it, IMO. They sell purse sprays and mini purse sprays for a very reasonable price.

Unless you are lucky enough to live somewhere you can sniff in person?

I posted right before some very nasty thunderstorms hit my area. Both my cell phone and the TV were going nuts with severe weather alerts. I might get another round later on tonight. For now, it’s quiet.

Another name for the Buck Full Moon is the Thunder Moon. It’s definitely appropriate for Colorado!

Glad you liked the Demeter speed run. 😉

Calypso orchids are a favorite note of The Harmonist. Their a gorgeous prominent note in their Moon Glory which is a favorite of mine for date nights.

Demeter is nowhere near in the same league as The Harmonist! But it’s worth a try anyway for something casual.

Thanks for the reviews Jalapeno. I need to get my hands on the Myrrh then. Gingerale has always been on my purchase list. I should think about buying them soon.

I was a Janie-come-lately to Chowards Violet. Haven’t seen them recently out here, but I also haven’t been looking.

Late to post, been having some stomach issues (hoping it’s not an ulcer) so accomplished little today. I have a bridal shower to photograph tomorrow so I need to gather as much energy as I can for the event. My return from space perfume – summer edition – Chanel Paris Deauville. I’ll probably wear that tomorrow.
