Friday scent of the day 6/27

Posted by Robin on 27 June 2025 144 Comments

It's the last Friday in June, plus National PTSD Awareness Day and Canadian Multiculturalism Day. Birthdays: Paul Laurence Dunbar, Helen Keller, Norma Kamali, Vera Wang, Alice McDermott. Also, National Orange Blossom Day, and that's the subject of our community project for today...you know what to do!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Diptyque Eau des Sens.

Reminder: on 7/4, wear a fragrance with a basil note, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Houbigant Orangers en Fleurs – a perfect orange blossom perfume, in my opinion.

By the way, I forgot another scent with orange blossom in my wardrobe – Chanel No. 22. But I’ll stick to Houbigant today.
And later I will try two samples of perfumes with basil, to see if I want to wear them next week.

As per Wednesday I’m in vintage Desprez Bal á Versailles, which may be representative of a grand ball in Paris, but only if everyone there sprayed on some perfume without bathing for a couple of days, and maybe I dunno playing with their pet tigers too. It does smell distinctly of orange-flower (and jasmine too), but lurking underneath is a lot of gorgeously dirty civet. No insult to say that it’s a really good copy of Dana Tabu.

    Hello and tgif!
I am wearing my most precious orange blossom – Guerlain Imagine.
The weather is so hot it made me do evil things. I made Affogato for my breakfast coffee. It was so great I *almost* made a second. Maybe a decaf version after dinner… 😛

It was a birthday present for myself. I figured it’s more affordable than a fancy designer bag and I can display the pretty bottle and see it everyday once I’m done, which you also can’t really do with a bag!

I’m wearing Nerolia Vetiver from a full bottle I bought unsniffed. On my skin it presents as a soliflore Neroli, no vetiver at all. Maybe it will develop later. Anyway, it fits the CP.

Yesterday got away from me so I’m now reporting that I wore 24, Faubourg all day yesterday and it was glorious — the scent, not the weather. Today is allegedly the last of our cool, rainy spell before summer returns, and I’m taking advantage by wearing Knize Ten. The perfumes in my collection that include an orange blossom note are mostly either leathers (K10, Cuir Cannage, Cuir Mauresque, Jolie Madame, etc.) or amber-y florals (24F, Alahine, TF Noir Pour Femme, Gucci EDP) because I don’t usually do well in BWFs, but I do own and love Au Delà Narcisse which I would have worn for the CP if it were a touch warmer weather. #firstworldproblems 😅

I remember liking 24F a lot when I did a perfume bender at a major mall. Think I had 12 – 14 scents on my arms by the time I was done.

Really should check out 24F on its own.

Paul Laurence Dunbar’s poem Dawn, in honor of his birthday.

Great memory! BYes and the body butter. I got the Vanilla Vibezz and Topless Tangerine Sugar Scrubs in Travel size, then the Bossy Butter in Sweet Citrus. I liked the consistency and result of the sugar scrubs, but preferred the tangerine thinking it would go nicely with my Lush Happy Hippie shower gel. I’m emulating Kris in her layering. The whipped argan body butter was a winner: consistency, scent and effect. That argan oil is highly effective on my body.

I’m in Art Meets Art Like a Virgin LE from perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin for the cp. This is a dupe for Love don’t be shy by Killian. This line disappeared for awhile but I see the website is back and they’ve renamed this one Like a Virgin Unplugged. Same notes. Remember MTV Unplugged? Dang, I miss the nineties.

It’s gorgeous out today and I’m off to get my haircut soon. I plan to have about 7-8 inches cut off! I’ve been growing my hair for the past couple of years and I’ve finally reached my breaking point lol. Back to my shoulder length bob I go.💇🏼‍♀️

Hi there! I was waiting for you to comment to tell you that Mr daughter spent a week in Wisconsin for work training and absolutely loved it!! Epic is like a Disneyland and she also went to Madison and Lake M and Chicago for a day trip. Her reports back and photos makes me want to move there 😝. I spent a summer in Milwaukee in 83 with the Milwaukee Ballet Company but I don’t think I got a good impression of your state. Her photos and videos changed that.

Omg, yes, epic IS like Disneyland.😅 They are open to the public on sundays for free, self guided tours and that’s what we did one Easter a couple years ago. That campus is amazing, and they are always expanding!
Curious what she did in madison proper? The capitol? The union? Picnic point? So many great things to do here!
Wisconsin is so green, lush and beautiful in the summertime. I can’t image living anywhere else, and it’s what keeps me here. It certainly isn’t the winters.😉

The state capital with that gorgeous dome, Monona Terrace and Lake Monona (sp?) and another neighborhood ( name escapes me) with a really cool main street with lots of restaurants, pubs and outdoor cafes. Her training was at Epic and she said the campus is like a huge university ( she and her sister went to a gigantic university so she has a point of comparison). The photos she sent me of Epic were jaw dropping. They have 14,000 employees!!!!

I really love the scent of neroli, actual all citrus blossoms. I’ve teed up Penhaligon’s Orange Blossom and Mizensir’s White Neroli for the morning.

In other perfume news—last night we watched the documentary Enigma on HBO Max. I totally loved it. It’s about two trans women who were famous in Europe in the 60s-80s, one entirely passing as a woman and the other who tried to live her life “out.” Their stories intersect with loads of famous people and royalty. But, the perfume link is that there is a shot of the bedroom vanity of Amanda Lear, and on it are a bottle of Mitsouko parfum and another Guerlain, as well as a pretty bottle of VC&A’s First. My poor husband sat through me rewinding the vid several times to get a proper look!

Eau de Mervielles which I believe has some orange in it- to my nose it does and I will look up the notes to make sure I get points.

I am very happy that I purchased this one-but I see now I could have gotten it cheaper on some discounters than at the department store. Oh well…at least I didn’t have to wait for shipping !

Our local library branch was closed the last few days and today it’s finally open and I had a huge stack of books waiting for me to come claim them. Though I am still reading Frozen River.

I had a good horse lesson this morning, with perfect riding weather. Little by little I feel my posting getting better and my leg stronger. Though my instructor hasn’t given me a compliment since I started in March-but that is par for the course…

Orange blossom is one of my favourite notes, and I have a huge line up of orange blossom perfumes, including several versions of L’Artisan Fleur D’Oranger, and soliflore Roxanna Illuminated Perfumes and DSH scents, but today I picked a duo from Hiram Green, the original and sadly discontinued Dilettante and the new iteration, Tryst, both all natural perfumes. Thematically they are all about the spirit of the orange grove, from the orange blossom petals to the bark and fruit and they translate it into a beautiful 4D olfactory experience. Tryst is richer and deeper, especially in base notes, Dilettante more honeyed and heady in its top notes. For now I like to wear them both at the same time, they blend so beautifully on my skin. I was completely smitten with Dilettante when it first came out: it was like an all natural, sunny yet carnal and complex rendition of vintage Narcisse Noir to me and for a while it was my signature perfume. I will be sad when my stash of it runs out but I’m glad Tryst is still around.

I’m wearing a dark, animalic orange blossom today for our cool and cloudy weather, Olympic Orchids Mardi Gras. For the same weather the last two days, I’ve worn vintage Caron Narcisse Noir and vintage L’Occitane Neroli. Orange blossom is a favorite note of mine and one that sparked a love of perfume as a child after we visited Florida and my mom brought home a Florida Water ob perfume from one of the souvenir shops.

A few others I wore earlier in the week were Arquiste L’Or de Louis (thunked my sample), Hermes Neroli Dore, and Frederic Malle Cologne Indelible. And I’m looking forward to next week’s basil CP.

Since it’s Paul Laurence Dunbar’s birthday, I have to do my usual plug for his poetry since he’s from my hometown of Dayton, Ohio. We studied him a lot in school, went to the museum at his old house, and probably also viewed his grave when we made a field trip to the beautiful Woodland Cemetery where he was buried (the Wright brothers were buried there too). If you’re wondering why we took a field trip to a cemetery, I went to a magnet school for the arts, and this was with the creative writing and visual arts programs. Us students would sit around through the cemetery and write and draw using the graves and cemetery setting as inspiration.

And yesterday we celebrated Peter Lorre’s birthday by watching a film of his we’d never seen, You’ll Find Out. It’s honestly pretty low on my list of his movies, and like Kanuka, I love M and only watched it for the first time last year. Another of my favorites with him as the star is The Face Behind the Mask. He had incredible range, on display in that film, going easily from a sweet, unassuming man to an abused and vengeful person. He could easily play it sweet and hopeful or sinister and cunning with that face of his.

I haven’t heard of Paul Laurence Dunbar so thanks for the tip. Incidentally I once ran a similar creative writing course centred on my local cemetery for inspiration. There are so many terrific stories to be found if you take the time to read/ research the lives of the buried.

I did not remember Dunbar was from Dayton. He lived in DC for a time and when I was growing up there was still a Dunbar High School there named after him, and I think there was a historical marker on one of his houses.

Oh funny, that’s nice to DC honored him though he was there only a few years per his Wikipedia. We, of course, also have a Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Dayton.

I’m a big fan of his! I get a poem a day in my email at poets.org and they have featured him several times. I included in my above post a shorter poem of his called Dawn. It’s exquisite imo. So delighted your school offered that kind of onsite education! Nothing like a field trip to make learning something I forgettable.

That’s very cool you are already a fan LesLiesse! I believe when I was in around 6th grade at a different school we all had to recite poems in front of an audience. I believe they were all his poems? That memory is a bit foggy.

And yes, my high school was really special. I went there 7-12 grades, and it was definitely not a typical junior high or high school experience when I talk to my partner or friends about what their school was like. I get a fair bit of nostalgia for some of those very creative and idealistic times spent there. Of course, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses, but the good memories outweigh the bad.

Two peaches again and having a chai tea from the teapot in my gravatar. Today, two favorite Ob scents, this morning Au Pays de la fleur d’oranger Neroli blanc, they’ve kept the intense which is inferior imo and discontinued the OG and tonight Chabaud Orangerie Musicale.

Yes, we’ve got to roll with it somehow, be philosophical, at least I’ve got a bottle, didn’t wait for a discount, purchased right there at the perfumery Bloom, the best we have in London for niche. On Fragrantica the intense is more popular, not the first time I disagree.

Taking points in Obvious Un Été (now renamed to Milk & Matcha) for the orange blossom, although that’s not its main note.

Alone-ness is vital to life, in my opinion. My mother has taught me the value of scheduling time alone and enjoying it, it’s a crucial part of everyday. Enjoy it while you have it during your very busy house guest summer!

Agree! I’ve never officially lived by myself, always someone with me somehow. But lately life is changing, and I find myself home alone for the better part of several days a week. It was hard for me after a time, and I commented to a friend who replied that enjoying alone-ness is an important life skill. 🙂

It’s a frightful day here: cold, pouring rain, risk of floods etc. so, a really cosy scent that is also a bit interesting, Breath of God. We’ve been watching the series A Night Of. It’s made by the same team who did the recent Andrew Scott Ripley series so it’s similarly stylish. Great actors, Riz Ahmed in the lead; John Tuturro supporting. It is so horribly, almost unbearably tense: a young Muslim man is picked up for a crime and put in NY prison, and everything goes from bad to worse. It is complex around issues of justice, innocence and guilt. It’s one of those series that is described as ‘ compelling’.

I haven’t watched the Andrew Scott Ripley, but I saw him once in an episode of Foyle’s War and I was very impressed with him in that.
He seems a very versatile actor.

I am celebrating orange blossom in SL Fleurs de Oranger. Today I am detecting something green in the mix that I hadn’t noticed before. I like orange blossom notes a lot, but I think my favorite is yesterday’s Tryst. From the comments here, I am wishing I had smelled Dilettante.

I wore several of my orange blossom scents already this week so I jumped the gun and went with Wilhelm perfume Basilico and Fellini, mainly because it’s one of the samples I found yesterday in my decluttering project. It’s REALLY green. I do like basil in scents but there’s some juicy green note in here that is making my nose twitch. Or is it the pitahaya? Dragon fruit which I am not familiar with. Or it could just be hay because I do always sneeze when I’m around fresh hay. Oh well. Maybe later on today I’ll spray a layer of Azemour les Oranges over all this!

I’m torn between Neroli Outrenoir and Narcisse Noir for today, I think I’ll start with one and move to the other in the evening 🙂 .
Meanwhile, I’m having a very pleasant slow start to Saturday, and I can still smell last night’s perfume on my clothes, Vero Profumo Rubj, the cutrent VdE.
I’ve got more perfumes with orange blossom and neroli notes than I realised.

    sotd = Jour d’Hermes

I’m CP adjacent, at least there’s nice citrus up top.

I was unscented on Thursday as I was on a day long hike and was encouraged not to wear perfume. Someone in the group thinks it scares away wildlife. Hmmmm.

And yesterday I had a lovely scented experience. A gentleman in my vicinity smelled amazing. I asked him if he minded a question . . . I asked . . . And he replied he wears Diptyque L’Eau De Neroli every day. It smelled incredible. I think it was scented kismet – the exact right fragrance with the exact right skin chemistry.

I’ve not smelled that scent in the bottle so now it’s on my sniffing wish list for next time I’m at a perfume counter.

Wishing everyone a wonderful FriYAY! For anyone who enjoys animated movies, please give The Wild Robot a try. It’s adorable. 🙂

I enjoy all sorts of ‘orange’ notes in fragrance except – I don’t care much for orange blossom. For today’s cp, I first considered AG Neroli, a strong orange blossom scent but, nah, too strong for this relentless hot humid weather. Next I have a soliliflore L’Occitane Orange Blossom edt I rarely wear, but nah again, still too potent. I finally settled on one I do enjoy, a cheapie bought some years ago that’s airy and refreshing in summer, Love2love Orange Blossom & White Musk (composed by Maurice Rousel, he of Hermes 24 Faubourg fame). Orange and bergamot sit atop orange blossom and peony resting on a base of sandalwood, white musk and orris root. It manages to be both light yet lasting and is my choice for this week’s cp. 👍

Like so many of you, it’s been ghastly hot and humid with a chance of storms each day for a week already with no relief in sight til next Tuesday. Last Sunday was our community’s garden club walk, about the last thing I wanted to do in the heat but as a fellow gardener I wanted to support all those who had to get their gardens ready despite the weather so we went and enjoyed it but we were drenched by the time we got home.

We’re headed out for an early evening outdoor concert tonight in a neighboring community, then maybe we’ll go to our own community concert just a few blocks from our house. Or maybe just retreat back to the a.c. For the night. We’ll see.

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend ahead!🎶

A “thunk” means you have used up or emptied a perfume, lotion, etc. IIRC, ChocolateMarzipan coined the term, after the sound an empty container makes when being tossed in a trash receptacle.
