Wednesday scent of the day 6/25

Posted by Robin on 25 June 2025 146 Comments

It’s Hump Day and Global Beatles Day. Birthdays: George Orwell, James Meredith, Carly Simon, Anthony Bourdain. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm matching the heat (and wearing a bit of orange blossom) in Hermès Brin de Réglisse.

Reminder: 6/27 is National Orange Blossom Day...you know what to do! (This is another repeat.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Happy hump day!
Today I am wearing Jean Patou Chaldee which yes, has orange blossom. Jalapeño said it smells great in the heat and I agree, it blooms beautifully.

I agree – it smell gorgeous in the heat! I’ll dig out my bottle for this week, too. So sophisticated and unusual.

I’m CP adjacent in Bigarade Concentre. I love this scent-it’s just happiness in a bottle. I love the hay dry down, and the rose, and I cannot smell cumin at all.

We had one hot day here yesterday, and I have so much respect for all of you have been suffering under excessive heat. It’s much cooler today and there’s a breeze.

Bigarade Concentrée has been one of my most successful blind buys. I got it when a Dutch etailer was getting rid of old stock and selling a bunch of Malles at a discount.
      I find it very bracing.

    Hello.
Commando as I was out early for a pharmacy run and forgot perfume.
The strangest thing happened when I got into the Uber. The car smelled beautifully of iris, equal parts floral and rooty. As I was contemplating on commenting on her great choice of air freshener (also where I could get my hands on one!), she spoke first “What perfume are you wearing? It smells so good!” But guys, I was commando! I told her such and then said it was not me but her car that smelled really good. Then she laughed and said there was NO air freshener nor perfume on her! Either both our noses were out of whack or some mystical perfume magic happened.

I just got this decant and thought it sounded interesting. I’m wearing Acqua di Parma Luce di Rosa. It started off with a blast of pepper when I applied it, but is now featuring the rose. I would have liked more pepper past the first few moments.

Got Guerlain Shalimar Parfum Initial in a recent swap (hi, Gail!) and it is SPECTACULAR. The first iris I’ve ever genuinely liked — it’s there but it doesn’t take over, just sort of drifts among all the other notes. (I find it usually dominates and often has a sharp, kind of garbagey quality. I know there are some real iris fans here and I’ve never gotten it, but now I think I sort of do.)

Shalimar PI used to be my signature for years (well, “signature” as in wore it at least once per week) so imagine how gutted I was when Guerlain axed it. I only have half a bottle left and I would take it out every now and then to look at it and reminisce.

Robin, we’re house twins. I had one of those work meetings that make me nervous, so I went with a wine-colored T-shirt and Hermes 24 Faubourg for a boost of confidence – golden orange blossom with boss vibes.

Commando for a doctor appointment shortly, but afterwards I’ll be wearing something wonderful. Despite orange blossom being a somewhat challenging note for me, it appears I own many fragrances that include it. Hard to choose a favorite among them, but 24 Faubourg and Azemour Les Oranges are two contenders.

It’s gonna be my Friday wear! Vintage Bal á Versailles is thoroughly animalic to the point of being filthy (which is why I can’t wear it to work tomorrow), but the orange-flower note somehow stands out — I always notice it. That’s perfume alchemy is what it is.

Heat Metaphor Goddess! We’ve got a marvelous local library, and I think I well-designed one (eps w working a/c) is a crown jewelfor a neighborhood. The children’s library, utterly enchanting. And the small coffee shop has an outdoor area with umbrellas where you can read, sip iced tea, catch a breeze. Whenever I need to do long-range planning, I go there for uninterrupted, relaxing concentration time. The nearby Jasmine wafting perfume doesn’t hurt 😉. Long live our libraries!

Frozen summer fruits and yogurt smoothie

The heatwave finished with the weekend, we Brits are wimps when it comes to temperatures as it never was above the lower thirties Celsius, what was more noticeable is that it happened in June which is rare. It still reached 27C today and I sprayed Eau Ressourçante liberally and when that faded Aromafit and tonight for the CP it’s Nuxe Prodigieux le Parfum, my back up bottle as I finished my first bottle some time ago, it’s very pretty-smelling and I like it better than Terracotta.

I pulled out Smell Bent 1999 for the CP today. The grapefruit still comes off as household cleaner to my nose, but fortunately that’s mostly faded and I’m just smelling orange creamsicle.

Very much looking forward to a long weekend away, if not very far away. Ockeghem Teen started summer today, though it feels nothing like summer and she’s spent the morning burrowed into her bed. She can lounge while she can — she starts school back up next week, to finish the two courses that were a disaster online.

I nabbed it when it first came out, it was a toss up between it and Indigo Smoke, but I realised that my local perfumery was selling L’Or de Louis for the same price as the rest of the range and I thought that mightn’t last!

Sotd John Varvatos Artisan. Love that woven bottle. It’s a men’s fragrance but normally I layer something on top to make it smell more feminine.

Haven’t been in gym since November, but all this gym talk is inspiring me. Once I get out of my sleep deficit, I hope to emulate apsara and Robin, and anyone else pursuing that excellent habit!

I’m wearing lots of sprays of MFK APOM, the original one for Femmes. I’m lucky I bought a bottle since it’s inexplicably discontinued. :-(. I have not had the opportunity yet to try the new 2024 unisex re-release. I’m someone for whom a little orange blossom goes a long, long way—like a bridge too far kind of distance. I find Seville de L’Aube a scary scrubber. Eek! But I guess the ylang ylang in this one just makes it less cloying and more swoon worthy.

Thank you Robin. From the description of L’Ete 67 (sipping peach tea in a garden full of jasmine) I was surprised at the notes listed. But, so inspired, I’m making peach iced tea with fresh peach puree and going to drink it near the jasmine on the property.

Feeling very sorry for everyone who is broiling under that Heat Dome. I saw news footage of roads buckling in Baltimore last night. And some of my friends in the Princeton, NJ, area lost power an hour ago. Their service provider said it might be back on by 8:30 tonight. Fortunately for them, they went out to dinner.

Nothing like that here, thank God. Today will be the last of the days right around 80 degrees. Gonna start heating up once again.

SOTD = Dior Pure Poison. Glannys’ orange blossom list reminded me that I do have it, and I can definitely smell the orange blossom in it.

I love that Pure Poison bottle. So fab.

So sorry about the heat and the troubles it’s causing for so many. Very glad you are ok, Jalapeño!

One of my toughest memories from life in NJ was two days of — massive thunderstorms, downed trees, no power, no AC, temps in the 90s and 90% humidity, and a two month old baby to boot!

You lived in NJ, too? Where at?

I remember losing power after Superstorm Sandy rolled thru. We were some of the lucky ones, with only 17 hours of outage. Some people didn’t have power for a month.

sotd = Jour d’Hermes (am) + White Shoulders (pm) + 4711 Original (all day long)

It’s finally hot here! I can now commiserate with everyone who’s been riding the recent heatwaves.

But I’m almost always cold (cold hands, warm heart!) so it will be a few days before I tire of sweating it out.

In silly tech-y news I am learning use my first ever iPhone. It’s a bit of a learning curve for me for certain. I think I will love it eventually.

Favorite thing at the moment is that I can pair my magic keyboard to my phone! No more trying to type with two fingers on the tiny keys on the screen.

I may start writing massive love letters to perfume and to all of you fabulously fragrant folks. Time will tell. 🙂

SOTD = Eris Parfum Green Spell

    CP-fail but oh so good!

In other news, at my cousin-in-law’s retirement party, I sat close to someone whom I thought was a church friend but ended up being a pickleball friend. You couldn’t blame me because I heard “temple” sometime during our conversation. She asked me now that I am retired, what do I do ALL DAY? I provided my usual declutter, etc. She appeared not to understand my response so I asked how she spends her days (she’s not retired). So she rattled off her entire day x5 from the time she wakes up the time she goes to bed and Saturday + Sunday. This took all of 5 minutes and then she asked me again. My response is the same except I can’t wake up any time I want to … no pressure. WTH did she want me to say. 🤦🏻‍♀️

The orange blossom note seems to be in a lot of fragrances, so I was accidentally compliant in l’Eau d’Hiver yesterday. Yet today, I’m surprisingly not compliant in Chanel no 5 EDT. I thought for sure orange blossom would be one of the MANY floral notes in No 5! But wait, it does have neroli. I always get confused about the difference between OB and neroli.

Neroli is just another way of processing orange blossoms. IMO there is no reason not to count it for the cp.

I narrowly avoided getting hit by a bunch of wood falling off the truck ahead of me today. I uncharacteristically passed him probably 10 seconds before it all fell. It was very scary but I was more shocked than anything. I guess my real sotd was Angel.
