Wednesday scent of the day 6/18

Posted by Robin on 18 June 2025 119 Comments

It's Hump Day, Waterloo Day, International Sushi Day and Autistic Pride Day. Happy 83rd birthday to Paul McCartney! What fragrance are you wearing?

My song pick today is the pop masterpiece Wouldn't It Be Nice, from the 1966 Beach Boys album Pet Sounds. Pure joy, and I'm wearing Aftelier Candide to match.

Reminder: 6/20 is Brian Wilson's birthday (and the summer solstice). Scent a Beach Boys song, or honor Brian Williams with your fragrance in any other way you see fit. (For lillyjo, who asked for another music cp.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows Brian Wilson at 20, during the recording sessions for The Beach Boys’ 1962 debut album, Surfing’ Safari, and is via Brian Wilson at Facebook.

Bonus listen: the isolated vocals from Wouldn't It Be Nice. (You can find the band's official video of Wouldn't It Be Nice here.)

Bonus unrelated cover: They Might Be Giants doing Caroline, No.

    Hi everyone 😊
I’m enlisting my husband’s help with the CP, he was a musician in the 60s. Today I’m wearing Chanel L’Eau with a blue striped shirt and he said both reminded him of Surfing USA.
My favorite Beach Boys song is Good Vibrations, I just haven’t found the right perfume to pair it with. Maybe I’ll figure it out by Friday.
    Thanks for the videos, Robin!

I may wear L’Eau tomorrow as I, along with many others here, get to take a trip to the dentist. I don’t want to blast them with anything too strong.

I seem to be fixated on beach/sunshine scents for the theme, and today I’m in Clinique Wrappings, the brightest gold scent I ever smelled. Starts with a lens flare of aldehydes and quickly settles into a sunlight-golden green-floral chypre.

They usually positioned it as a Christmas scent, with a gift set available only at the holidays, but I was out and about today (23ºC) and it worked perfectly. Not too strong, bright and gleaming, lasts for hours and hours — I can still smell it.

I’m in a lot of Jardin Apres La Mousson. I love this scent-I have no issues with melon when it’s used correctly. This scent smells so good in the heat.

After work it’s a spot of tame mountain biking, and then more yoga practice. The first week of July I have a week long Pose and Repose session. I know I’ll be a hurting unit physically but it will get me out of my comfort zone. thanks for the kind comments on my headstand-I really appreciate it. I’m trying to be more active. Yoga is funny: sometimes you think-that’s not a pose for me but you cannot know that until you try it. Then you try it and it feels fine, or you can find some ease in it, or maybe you’re just naturally good at it. But you can’t know until you try 🙂

I sprayed Love Tuberose after learning here that it’s Paul McCartney’s birthday. I’m pairing it with his song “Silly Love Songs” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ap87QgZKTNw
It also feels like a good match for the Beach Boys, since it smells like suntan lotion. But I plan to scent two Beach Boys songs tomorrow and on Friday.

It probably says something about me that my two favorite Beach Boys recordings are Sloop John B (not written by any of The Beach Boys) and Sail On, Sailor (written in part by Brian Wilson but with lead vocals by a guy named Blondie Chaplin). This morning I’m in Maison Crivelli Rose Saltifolia for Sail On, Sailor, a song that Wilson reportedly did not like at all but nevertheless chose for inclusion on “Classics Chosen by Brian Wilson”. Go figure. 🙄

I was a choir kid too, and really close harmonies ARE difficult. I sang alto, but I remember doing something from Handel in high school where we were short on tenors so they switched me to tenor for that, and that was super hard too.

Here’s a fantastic cover version of Sloop John B from an Australian music show called Rockwiz. The singers are Norman Blake from Teenage Fanclub and Hailey Cramer ( well known Australian singer) who just blows it away with her harmonising. Will cheer up any grey day.

Happy Wednesday, everyone. (And Happy Birthday to Paul McCartney – half of the greatest songwriting team ever.😎)

My vetiver week continues. I’ve worn some great ones: Guerlain Vetiver, Malle’s Vetiver Extraordinaire, Encre Noire from Lalique, Sel de Vetiver from The Different Company, and Dior’s Vetiver. All quite different, and all really compelling. (The Dior is discontinued, and prices on eBay are nuts, so I cherish the generous sample from our very own AnnE.)

Today I’m in Red Vetiver from Montale, which features a combo of rose and vetiver. In the dry down, the rose fades a bit, and the scent starts to resemble Terre d’Hermes. Good stuff.

Paul McCartneys’ birthday was tantamount to a national public holiday when my sister and I were teenagers.

It’s also National Picnic Day, so one can eat their sushi outside and conquer two holidays in one.

Keeping it apolitical, some of my favorite memories of Teheran were the hot, no a/c days of summer, especially Fridays when families would take their carpets, samovars, and food and head up to the mountains outside the city. Food placed in the icy rivers and brooks to chill, everyone napping after lunch on their carpets before heading back to the city at dusk.

SOTD post shower will be Passage d’ Enfer.

I chose Moschino I Love Love for today and the song I had in mind is Good Vibrations–looks like I’m not alone with that song!

It’s another beautiful day in Seattle and I am meeting some friends at a park this morning before other friends arrive to stay for a few days. They leave Saturday morning and still other friends in town from far away come for dinner Saturday night, then relatives arrive Sunday for a long stay. I can barely keep up with all the logistics. There are different guests in July and August and September. I really need Mr. SP to stop telling everyone to visit us in the summer.

I’m wearing CDG Ganja, which has become one of my all-time favourite perfumes. It’s a rounder version of Chypre de Mousse, equally potent but with a faint sweetness that just makes it so incredibly wearable. I think it’s in my top 5 and I’m almost finished my bottle. I don’t get marijuana from it ( but I’m no expert on what it smells like). I guess it could fit the CP, in a roundabout way.

I’m in Initio Power Self today, because it came in my monthly sample bag from Scentrique. According to the description card, it’s “bold & empowering”, also “confident, sensual, and magnetic”. Musk and white flowers don’t really say any of that to me, especially in this incarnation. I’ve done the monthly sample program for 6 months to try some new (to me) lines and I just cancelled; nothing has grabbed me other than the PdN Pavlova, which I already owned.

No CP link at all. Oh well. Happy hump day, all!

It’s been a pet-oriented morning. Bertie has a vet appointment and needed urine collected, so he was stuck in the shower enclosure for six hours and was not happy about it. Dapper has a stomach upset and so I was cleaning liquid poop out of his butt fur. There really is only one house suitable to scent these events, so I am wearing Chanel. I think the Chanel woman rises above such mundane chores as butt fur cleaning and pretends there are no such things as poop or butts. I am wearing Box of Eels and pretending I am that Chanel woman.

Softly floral, no tennis ball 🎾 smell although I suppose the soft floral gives one the impression of tennis? I have a travel spray, just enough to last me a while!

Today I am wearing Laura Mercier Almond Coconut. I layered it with Tree Hut Pineapple shower gel and Tree Hut Coconut body butter. All that layering and the humidity still ate it up.
I walked by a woman today who was wearing Aromatics Elixer. I walked by twice just to be sure. It was just the right amount. Not overpowering at all.

I have a travel spray of that LM, I like it. Lucky to smell AE in the wild and impressive you recognised it.

My SOTD is MDCI La Ravissante, just because I love it and it makes me feel pretty. It’s sweet but has a juicy pomegranate note too. After doing a couple of brief errands in the 90+ degree heat and glaring sun, I kind of collapsed at home with a bottle of cold water and the AC turned extra low. Ugh. On the plus side, I found a little container of Tillamook Peanut Butter-Chocolate Ice Cream at the grocery store and have a fun snack to look forward to!

I like La Ravissante. I ordered a sample many months ago after I saw you post about it. Sweet, pretty, classy.

Never tried any ice cream from Tillamook. Love their cheeses, though.

I have been listening to a lot of The Beach Boys these last couple weeks, RIP Brian. I never heard their vocals isolated. It showcases what talented vocalists they were and how great with singing in harmony together. I am wearing Jo Malone Sweet Pea and English Pear from a 9 ml free sample bottle. It isn’t a big favorite, but it has grown on me and it is young and reminds me of a sunny warm day like, a lot of TBB 1960’s music does.

There is some kind of magic to TTB’s sunny happy psychedelic pop sound. So uplifting.

Your scent sounds beautiful. The sweet peas growing in my neighborhood were very fragrant this year. I love them. 😍

    In Chanel Bel Respiro.
I just got home from working at the office today and I collapsed on my couch exhausted. A heat wave is arriving tomorrow and it will stay until the end of next week. Temps will be in the upper 90s with heat index in the 100s. Welcome summer! am glad I won’t be back to the office until next Monday. I am not going outside at all, except for Saturday.
    Happy Wednesday! 🌞

sotd = Chanel No. 5 esp

Because why not? Oddly, it’s a very grounding scent for me. I guess Old School perfumes are comforting in some way.☺️

I did a random deep dive into The Beach Boys and came up with a beautiful ballad about a love that never dies. The fifth song from their fifth album is called The Warmth of the Sun. ☀️ 🎶

It’s International Sushi Day?!? I could have grabbed some at the grocery store if I’d have known. ☹️

Late post due to afternoon errands. It’s a beautiful day in my neighborhood with sun and temps in the low to mid 80’s. Yesterday’s stormy weather is a distant memory. I took advantage of nice weather to get groceries, especially perishables. Supposed to have seriously hot weather for the next 4 days.

SOTD = back in Baiser Vole EdP. This sample is getting low, so a thunk could happen sometime soon.

My brother has a makeshift “sun shade” over the sliding doors to his deck. It really helps with the sun load.

I’ve been thinking of putting a reflective film on my bedroom windows, since they face East.
