Tuesday scent of the day 6/17

Posted by Robin on 17 June 2025 110 Comments

It's (teapotless, I will do two teapots next week to make up for it) Tuesday, plus the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. What fragrance are you wearing?

Most of my favorite Beach Boys songs are from Pet Sounds, but I'm starting with an earlier song, Don't Worry Baby, from 1964. It was included on my first Beach Boys music purchase, the 1974 double album compilation Endless Summer. Don't Worry Baby was written by Brian Wilson with Roger Christian, with Wilson taking the lead vocal. While it's not entirely an upbeat song, it still gives me an instant happy summer feel. So I'm in a happy summer favorite, Carthusia Mediterraneo.

Reminder: 6/20 is Brian Wilson's birthday (and the summer solstice). Scent a Beach Boys song, or honor Brian Williams with your fragrance in any other way you see fit. (For lillyjo, who asked for another music cp.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows the Beach Boys (with Brian at the back) at Paradise Cove beach, Malibu, in 1962, in the then-SoCal-surfer uniform of khakis and Pendleton shirts. Yes, you can still buy the shirt.

Bonus listen: an outtake with alternate lead vocal, from the 2013 box set Made in California. You can also find a list of Don't Worry Baby covers at WhoSampled.

Bonus unrelated cover: Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco) singing Love and Mercy.

I know only a small handful of Beach Boys songs, but when I think of them I think of beaches and surfing, and more than any scent I know, L’Artisan Parfumeur Safran Troublant has thatgolden summertime glow to it. It’s not beachy, but it’s still a halo of sunshine.

    Hello.
I will try to do a Summer/beach week. Sotd is TF Soleil Blanc. While I don’t really enjoy Summer, the heat or the scorching sun, I do like the concept of a great Summer e.g. the beach, getaway vacays, ice creams (duh!) etc.

I’m wearing Fidji edt, one of my favorite old timers. Not that the bottle is old, and its probably been reformulated to death, but it still smells of galbanum, which is a favorite note of mine.

Wearing Bronze Goddess from the swapmeet today, I forgot what the CP was so I’m accidentally compliant. I will have to give this CP some thought! We saw the Beach Boys in concert with a bunch of people long ago, it was a fun, lighthearted show. Have a peaceful day, everyone 🌹

The weather today is not giving me beach vibes or any perfume with a beach vibe.

    Love this one!

After coming back from the horse races I got the kids some horse stuffed animals and we all watched Secretariat. They liked it way better than Sea Biscuit. I was crying the whole movie-forgotten how much I loved it.

    Good morning, all!

The hot weather continues, as does my current obsession with vetiver – today I’m wearing an absolute classic: Guerlain Vetiver (1959.) My bottle has been around awhile – probably from the 90s – and it’s more overtly citrusy than other vetivers in my collection. I haven’t worn it in a few years, and I’m struck by how fresh and almost “sporty” it feels. It also occurs to me that the original Paco Rabanne Pour Homme is remarkably similar – with a more prominent vetiver note, it could be a twin brother.

Back from camping and now in the happy scramble of cleaning all that up and getting ready for guests arriving tomorrow. This starts a whole stream of guests that will keep us quite busy.

We had such a great time camping – we made our own happy hours on the beach at the campground (this is PNW beach, but warm enough for lots of kids to be splashing around), enjoyed beautiful hiking and kayaking and campfires and all the (very) chill atmosphere of the island. Whenever we go, I always wonder, could I live here?

It was the midwinter swim here at the weekend, and midwinter celebrations all week with a holiday on Friday ( Matariki) to celebrate the Maori New Year ( when Matariki/ Pleiades/ Seven Sisters) rises above the predawn horizon. My friend surfs all year but the water is pretty cold so it’s not exactly surf safari weather. So, I’m going winter beach with Smoked Ambergris which would also be appropriate for In My Room, I think.

People don’t realize how freezing cold the Pacific in Southern California is all year round. Coming from the East Coast, it was a shock to me for sure.

But I bet it is colder there this time of year, and surely the air isn’t as warm.

      Excellent song choice 🙂

Lots of good smellin’ people here! I’m in Bigarade Concentree-a generous amount, plus matching body lotion. And last night I finally got into headstand for yoga! I wasn’t that keen on it-I’ve had about four serious head injuries, and so I am protective of my head and neck. It’s Iyengar yoga, and I’ve been practising the prep for almost a year. I honestly didn’t care if I ever got in it or not. But last night I tried, and popped right up. Makes me wonder what else I’m capable of 🙂

Don’t really have much for the CP today…SOTD is Hiram Green Shangri-la. I mean, at a stretch, I guess you could say that the Beach Boys’ songs described California as a kind of Shangri-la paradise.

Cool and mostly cloudy this morning, though I think in a normal June pattern, we may see a bit more sun this afternoon. I’m recovering from having my dad here this weekend. I find we have less and less to talk about these days, as current events and history are off the table. But, good to have him here.

I was looking for Memo Marfa and couldn’t find it but I found a spray sample of Memo Inlé which I am trying. It’s a really quiet scent and I’m getting primarily tea. Very calming but where are all the florals, bergamot, and mint? I would definitely not pay lots of dollars for this! It’s very quiet here. I had a quick trip to Trader Joe’s for a few needed items. Sadly, I passed on the peonies on sale, because they looked so bedraggled.

The Beach Boys are not my favorite band but I admire their harmonious voices and will honor them later this week. Fils de Dieu today, so I immediately thought of Deva and tonight Flagrant Délice, an almondy fig.

1st song, the amount of talent on that stage and she was unique

They are not my favorite band either, and I never owned any of their albums other than Pet Sounds and Endless Summer. But as I got older and learned more about music, I did begin to appreciate them on a different level. I don’t like throwing around the word genius but I do think Wilson was a genius at arrangement. Admittedly I don’t much care about their later music after he left.

I think the departed, brilliant Brian Wilson needs something soaring, unexpected, and complex.
Been listening to the Smile Sessions all week, which opens a window onto his composing process. Plus all of Smile is so beautifully weird.

I am hot summer day appropriate in Bottega Veneta Parco Palladiano V Lauro. Which I love and fits today’s heat, but isn’t really cp compliant IMO.

This is the only one I know. I picked up a small decant on a whim a while back from one of the decant purveyors and really fell for it. Very herbal and summery. Long d/c of course. I finally found a bottle at a plausible price. At some point if I ever pick up suitable supplies I could send some along. LMK.

SOTD = Jo Malone Ginger Biscuit

Sounds good. I don’t like summer so whatever my hand lands on that’s what I am wearing. I have the newer bottle with the ribbon. I have the original one too except I need to find it. The OG is definitely more long-lasting.

In other news, it has been miserable weather-wise although I shouldn’t complain (yet) because it has been not hot. The drivers though can use a bit of refresher training.

For those with Netflix, I just binge-watched Dept. Q. I am hoping there’s a second season!

It’s going to be in the 90’s here this weekend. I will try and keep the wind from blowing it your way.

Very stormy day in Colorado! One town north of me had baseball-sized hail this morning (yikes). None of that here, thank God. Plenty of thunder, lightning and rain, though.

Father’s Day is always melancholy for me. My Dad passed away shortly after my 23rd birthday.

SOTD = Cartier Baiser Vole EdP, from The Sample Stash. It’s working well with the rare humid weather I am experiencing today.

Colorado sure seems to get a lot of hail with the storm’s. I’m getting storm’s tomorrow, where it looks like rain and high winds will be the main threat.
Sending hugs to you for Father’s day.

Colorado (at least the eastern half of it) is part of Hail Alley. Think of Tornado Alley, except for hail. So it is an unfortunate part of living here.

Hope your weather tomorrow isn’t anywhere as gnarly as mine was!

Thanks for the hugs. IIRC, you are missing your Dad as well, aren’t you?

I am. I was 20 when I lost him unexpectedly. It was the biggest reality check of my life Jalapeno.
          Thank you for remembering 🩵

I have the same issues around Mother’s Day; lost my mom when I was 11. When my grandmother goes, it’s going to be incredibly hard. She just turned 95; it will happen sooner rather than later, but I’ll never be ready even if she is.

I can’t even imagine losing a parent at that tender age. But yeah, even when it’s expected, it is never easy to deal with the death of a loved one.

      A rollercoaster of weather.

Sending hugs, in my case it was my mother whom I lost early.

Definitely crazier than usual weather for June here. But summer in Colorado can be very volatile.

So sorry to hear that your Mom passed far too soon. Hugs back.

    Yay for a music cp!
I think I have a good song match for Friday. For now, I am wearing summer/ beachy perfumes. Yesterday I wore LVEB Crystal Soliel and today is Dusita La Douceur De Siam.
I recently sampled the new Angel Steller. It’s actually pretty decent. It smells like original Angel with I believe pistachio and whipped cream. It turned a bit sour on me though. I will sample again another time.

So maybe Mugler has turned a corner and is done with the godawfulness? Pistachio and whipped cream sounds like a call back to Angel Muse.

It’s similar to Muse. More sweet and more nutty to my nose.
