Thursday scent of the day 5/22

Posted by Robin on 22 May 2025 110 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also World Goth Day and Sherlock Holmes Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Wrong month, but right weather, plus it smells like it could be a turtle habitat...so I'm in CB I Hate Perfume M#2 Black March.

Reminder: 5/23 is World Turtle Day...celebrate the occasion with your fragrance, in whatever way you see fit.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
Sotd is Amouage Outlands. I smell a strong resemblance of Angel under the spices of cardamom, anise and coriander. There is also an almost cool, minty, pine-like note perhaps from the elemi. The oud comes on slowly. It’s complex stuff.
I used to have a pet turtle when I was a child. Me and my cousins all had one each and when we visited each other, we would bring our turtles along.

We kept a snapping turtle for a time, a road rescue. Eventually we found a good pond for him.

We would put stickers on their shells before letting them socialize so we know which one belonged to who.

Haven’t checked in this week, so had guessed that the CP was “what perfume would a turtle wear?” I am stumped…

Will report back on the Parisian perfume shopping once the dust has settled.

Cristalle – I feel that all green and earthy perfumes (as well as aquatic ones) are suitable for the CP.
I spent almost two days unable to smell anything due to a head cold. Today, I can finally enjoy perfumes again, although my sense of smell is still a bit patchy.

      Some ideas for tomorrow.

“World Turtle Day is promoted by dressing up as turtles, wearing green summer dresses, saving turtles caught on highways, engaging in research, and adopting turtles or tortoises from rehabilitation centers.” (Wikipedia)

Anything nature-related I can tie in with turtles – sea, forest, desert, etc. – especially green scents.

Additionally, turtles are associated with longevity, knowledge, wisdom and tranquility.

Tomorrow I will probably choose something falling under at least one of these categories:

      Oceanic and aquatic scents
      Green, earthy, natural scents
      “Green Summer Dress” perfumes
Scents of wisdom, knowledge and tranquility
      Perfumes that last forever
      Vintage and enduring classics

Tam Dao should be great, for example.
      I hope this helps someone.

I’m not at all CP compliant-I’m in Carnal Flower lol. It’s a nice day here, and my yoga teacher has invited me and another student to her home to work on inversions. I’ve had about four serious concussions in my life so I am very careful what I do with my head and neck.

I just bought a small bottle of Number One. It reminds me so much of what I recall of Tatiana, my first “grown up” perfume I wore in the late 70s and early 80s. A while ago I smelled the reformulated Tatiana and it was awful, I mean really awful. When I tried Number One I was immediately transported back in time in the very best way.

I’m in Hermes Epice Marine for the CP, the which is salty and funky and animalic and seaweedy and reminds me of the giant green endangered turtle or tortoise we once saw half-submerged off the rocks of a beach in Hawaii. It was huge and its shell, what we could see through the water, was a beautiful blackish dark green. (We did not get close).
But for tomorrow, following Glannys’ suggestions for widening the interpretation, I may go with L’Air du Desert Marocain. Dunno if there are desert tortoises in North Africa but we have them in our local SoCal deserts so I think anything with dry herbs and incense and desert flowers would work just fine.

A couple of months ago I read a book called Maurice and Maralyn by Sophie Elmhirst about an English couple who set out to sail the world in the 1970s when their yacht was sunk by a whale. They ended up in a tiny rubber life raft for four months before being rescued by a Korean cargo ship. Apart from eating turtles, they also kept one as a ‘pet’ and it became an important part of their daily regime. It’s a good book ( not a memoir) and interesting because Maralyn is by far the stronger of the two, and her ability to make plans and care for her husband is really what kept them going when ship after ship sailed by without spotting them. It’s difficult to find a perfume match in my collection but am going with Copper which has an opaque ashiness which could bring to mind endless days lolling on an ocean.

When I think of turtles, I think of the succession of red-eared sliders I had as a kid. They were sold at the dime store for about a dollar, I think. The habitat was a round plastic dish with an island in the center, and a plastic palm tree on it. The moat around the island was supposed to be filled with water, so that the turtle could take refreshing swims (and drink it, I suppose). Those poor turtles! They never lived very long.
Today is cloudy and rather cool, so I picked Prada Infusion d’Iris. I like the Absolue version better most days but today the regular infusion is hitting the spot.

Wearing one of my Paris purchases, Soul of My Soul by ELDO. It was my favorite of all the ones I tried in the shop. I find it addicting, a rose spiffed up with woods, not at all sweet nor dense. I hardly noticed it when I first applied it, but as time wore on (see what I did there?😉) it was the one I kept coming back to sniff on paper and then my wrist. I just looked it up on Fragrantica—oh goodness those folks HATE it. Too funny.

Smoothie is an apple from Kent, so almost local.

I chose the very cheerful I Profumi Di Firenze Agrumi Di Sicilia, it’s one of my favorite citrus scents and its lasting power is quite good without awful synthetics like ambroxan and the like, instead the iPdF gentle musks which smell good on me. Tonight I chose vintage Caron Nocturnes and enjoying it, I must have shared before that the seller decanted the splash bottle in a good quality spray bottle and sent me both of them, so I have the empty, pretty splash bottle and the much more practical, full spray bottle.

They both sound very nice, and anything without those tenacious fixatives is a plus. Have never tried any Carons–they used to have a boutique in NYC that I always wanted to visit, but trips there were so action-packed that I never had a chance. Peeked at Caron’s site, and the bottles look completely revamped (with free engraving through 5/25). Not doing any blind buys, though. Betting vintage is better😉.

I did manage over the years to acquire some vintage Carons which were close to my heart (Bellodgia, Fleurs de Rocaille) as I had got to smell them in Paris as a teenager but I don’t have them all by any means. The prices for the re-released classics are so very steep🥺 aren’t they? The only one I really want is En avion extrait, because I have a sample and it’s glorious, like you I’d rather go vintage but prices vary widly on eBay.uk so one has to be patient to get deals.

🤞Supposedly the last of our dreary, chilly days, it’s warmed up just a bit and the 🌞 has finally peeked out. Yay! And more good news: it appears a brave pair of tiny wrens decided to occupy the birdhouse just outside my kitchen window, despite the pesky house sparrows who decided to nest in a nearby gutter and would prefer to be the only birds in the neighborhood.

SOTD is another one of the rare spring florals I really enjoy, and one of my favorite Goutals, La Violette. A little sweet, a little powdery, and a little green – perfect for a cool spring day. Yoga this morning, grocery shopping this afternoon, leftover lamb steak and couscous for dinner, just going to relax now.

    Happy almost-the-weekend!

We are house twins, I am wearing another Goutal, Eau du ciel (old version). I like La Violette, and have a small bottle. Have you ever tried Doyen’s other violet for Les Nez, The Unicorn Spell? I think it is greener than LV, but it has been a long time since I have worn either of them.

No, I’m not familiar with The Unicorn Spell, but I will check it out. Thanks for mentioning! I tend towards greener scents in spring rather than florals, so I’m definitely interested.

When I was a child, there was a couple of terrapins in the hothouse in the botanic gardens, I loved the warmth, the exotic plants and particularly the terrapins. So I’m wearing 1000 today, it’s a hefty floral, it’s sure to have some hothouse flowers in there somewhere.

I started my day in Masque Milano Russian Tea, which is interesting, easy to wear but not quite my thing.
I have since moved on to Goutal’s Eau du ciel. A tender hearted spring floral.

I know I tried Russian Tea but I honestly don’t remember a thing. And sadly, I don’t really remember that Goutal either.

Eau de Ciel was my first Annick Goutal and definitely one of my first niche fragrances.

SOTD = Marissa Zappas Annabel’s Birthday Cake

Seriously good, although not a serious perfume at all. It’s vanilla and all sorts of other yummy notes like cacao, tonka, whipped cream, honey 🍯…

And, since I usually don’t contribute much to reading polls, here’s a gift article from The NY Times on new books. You’re welcome 😇 🤣.

I’ve had a hard time making it here to post this week, mostly due to being busy at work, so I’ll just comment and run for now and try to get here earlier tomorrow! I finished a sample of Arquiste A Grove By the Sea today for the sea turtle connection. 🙂

Very pretty picture, the loss of my usual icon prompted me to make my own too.

Commando today. I woke up with a nasty headache that didn’t go away until around 4pm this afternoon. Perfume was not interesting to me. But I am wearing scented sunscreen on my arms.

Thinking more about turtles and tortoises. I remember seeing giant tortoises at the Philadelphia Zoo a few years back. They had decided to exit their house all at once, and two of them had the doorway to the outdoor habitat completely blocked. It reminded me of traffic on The Schuylkill Expressway. 🐢🐢🐢

Oh dear, I guess at least it eventually went away.

Can you believe I have never been to the Philadelphia zoo? I have probably been to the DC zoo (my reference zoo since I grew up there) 10 or 15 times since I’ve lived in PA, and went to the little zoo in Wilmington a handful of times, but never the Philly one.

I can highly recommend the Philly zoo! They have walkways for the animals that are above the human sidewalks. Very cool.

My reference zoo would be the Denver Zoo. That’s the one I have visited the most. But the Bronx Zoo was amazing. Too bad I went there only once.

I am sure it is lovely…my husband took my son at least once a year when he was young. I always opted for the day off 😉

I won’t share the gory details, but my newest pup could take care of that traffic blockage.🤢

Those tortoises were HUGE! They looked to be half the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. BEEG!!
