Wednesday scent of the day 5/21

Posted by Robin on 21 May 2025 130 Comments

It’s Hump Day, World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development and World Meditation Day. RIP George Wendt. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando for a dental appointment this morning. I will pick something calming for World Meditation Day when I get back.

Reminder: 5/23 is World Turtle Day...celebrate the occasion with your fragrance, in whatever way you see fit.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Leaving for the Natural History museum in a little bit. They just redid ours and from what I have heard, it is really something. Then I will head on over for my neurologist appointment right around the corner at 2:30. I decided that after my shower, I will wear Apres l’ondee. I haven’t worn Apres L’ondee in years and want to give it another try. Will be wearing my amber collar and bracelet because I am going to the Natural History museum.

Sounds like a partially fun day, anyway. I enjoy planning my jewelry as much as my perfume, your amber is perfect.

I’m in a generous amount of Chanel Eau de Cologne. There’s a non profit group I volunteer for, and this afternoon there’s a panel discussion on a relevant topic. I thought I was going to support the people who are speaking. Found out very late last night I am one of the speakers. I feel like I’m back in high school and forgot an assignment. Gotta hustle and write-hope everyone has a really good day!

It was such a polite audience, and a subject I’m, passionate about. It went well, and a couple of people came up to me afterwards to chat. Super nice group. Thanks, all of you, for being so nice-I really did feel like an unprepared scholar once again 🙂

Was in the mood for CSP Vanille Banane, and I remembered that some people say jasmine can have a banana-ish quality to it (something I’ve never noticed), so I put on a spritz each of VB and Demeter Jasmine, and people, it is FANTASTIC. The two scents just bring out the best in one another.

Finished my latest quilt top this morning, a huge undertaking, king-size at 88″ x 121″. I bought a yukata in Tokyo 13 years ago, midnight blue with Japanese words in white scattered all over it, but I never wore it, so I wanted to incorporate it into a quilt, along with my favourite-ever shirt that I wore until the placket was threadbare, a dusky purple colour. The rest of the fabrics are all shades of blues and greens and purples, my favourites, and I’m so happy with it. Now I have to deal with the rest of the process: I’m thinking of getting it professionally quilted, but that will cost close to $200, plus the backing fabric and batting will be almost that again, and I’m just hyperventilating at the thought of spending that much money on a single quilt. I could piece the backing and the batting and quilt it by hand, but that’s an immense amount of mostly uninteresting work. (What I really want to do is start another quilt top.) As I always say, you pay for everything with either money or time….

Have you started watching Taskmaster series 19? It’s only up to episode 3 on youtube but it’s SO GOOD! No spoilers just in case you’ve yet to start. I’ll say only this, the cast this season is really great.

Yes! There are some utterly deranged tasks — you wouldn’t think they could keep it fresh after so many seasons and iterations but they sure do. There’s often a contestant I can do without and this season’s is Fatiha El-Ghorri, but I love the rest of them and Jason Mantzoukas is the star as far as I’m concerned.

Yes I totally agree. Fatiha I can totally do without. She can get a bit much.
I love Jason in this, you can tell he’s a fan of the show and he loved every second of being on it! His chaos energy is absolutely wonderful.
I too am amazed by how creative some of the tasks still are. Alex Horne and his writing team are doing great work!

And I bet that quilt is gorgeous! Would love to see if you want to post an image anywhere.

I think it’s an excellent jasmine soliflore. It’s balanced, not too much of anything — not too swoony and overwhelming, not overly sweet nor indolic nor green, just a beautifully conceived middle-of-the-road jasmine. The usual Demeter lifespan, but at that price you could reapply as often as you like.

I’ll post a picture of the quilt top on my Instagram soon, once I have it pressed and presentable.

Sigh. I’m having some serious quilting envy. Growing up, my parents were in the textile business, so of course I learned to sew. And for many years I flirted with a career in costume design—but ultimately realized I didn’t have the drive to achieve enough technical skill to build and sew my designs at a professional level. But for all that, I have never made a quilt in my life. I love that you’ve incorporated a favorite old shirt. That is the magic of quilts!

I held off replacing my finished bottle of Boy because I had bought a bottle of Jersey and felt obligated to use it up first. I finally caved. With great fanfare I “generously” gave my bottle of Jersey to my husband (admittedly he may never ever wear it!) and bought a new bottle of Boy. The world is now set right.

I had sampled it before and told myself that I liked it but not enough for a FB. It wasn’t until I picked it out as my favorite in a blind sniff test at Chanel a year later that it felt like the right time.

SotD Shalimar Millesime Jasmine. FragranceNet’s offering it around $65! I think it is a good addition to the Shalimar family, but it does have that airy, clean touch of Mme. Jelk. Her style takes some getting used to IMHO. In other news, I benefitted so much from y’all’s many kind words and thoughts to me last week about the loss of my little cat. Fragrant hugs to you all. I’ve been busy with various garden projects and have a visit from my sister and BIL to look forward to in June. It’s wonderful how guests inspire good housekeeping! 🙂

RE: Shalimar MJ, it took a surprisingly musky turn as the day wore on, in the Kiehl’s zone, which I enjoyed. I think if you already have a Shalimar flanker or two, and a version of Shalimar (edp, cologne, etc) that you wear well, MJ might be redundant. I blind bought with high hopes, but found I like Millesime Iris or the oft’ forgotten Philtre better. I like Philtre very much.

I’m curious if you have had it very long. As it maturates, the jasmine really starts getting strong. In the beginning I thought it was pretty airy too, but not anymore. I wonder after it sits a while if you will like it better.

Feeling grateful for some good rain this week to water everything and keep it green💚

And speaking of water and turtles, I’m in a spritz of Byredo M/Mink for its marine note. I know this isn’t a widely loved fragrance but there’s something strangely compelling to me about it.

And as always, it’s fun to look at my collection through a different lens, in this case, marine.

I’ve been thinking about turtles. The ones I see around here are usually lined up along a sunny log in a river or creek, so I’m looking at woodsy notes, and maybe solar notes for my version of the CP. First up is Lubin Idole over Jergens Sweet Citrus Body Butter. Enabler button to Kris for the lotion, it’s really nice and the scent lasts a while. It provides a good base for the bitter orange in Idole.
Another wet, dreary, windy day. The local weather people keep saying the sun will come out tomorrow…queue earworm.

You are so right lillyjo! I think I liked the scalp massage the best during the wash, but it’s nice to have a professional blowout.

Glad you kept your hair appointment today. I’m sure it feels much better.

If it’s any consolation, I have to find a “new” person for my hair. I moved around a year ago, but I had my hair cut and color done in my home province when I was visiting the last 2 times. I got super lucky, as she “got” my hair. But it was super crazy expensive! I’m finding myself going back in about 2 weeks (for a wedding) but can’t wait/and or have the time to dilly-dally. I got a local hair place to call tomorrow; hoping that things work out.

When you find someone who understands your hair and what you want, it’s like they become part of the family. My aunt’s hair stylist of 40!yrs just came by last weekend to say goodbye. We’re a loyal family!

      Haircut twins!

I forgot to ask my person (who does a fantastic job) not to put extra product in my hair, as a result I’ve got it up in clips because what she put on was so smelly it was making me crazy and I’ve already had two showers today (showered to go to periodontist this morning, then again after gym & sauna) so don’t want to wash my hair. Blech! This stuff is so strong I will probably have to change my sheets in the morning.

The perfume is Mugler Wonder Bouquet. It has a brioche note.

Another dreary, dismal, chilly day here – temps barely into the 50’s + more rain and drizzle. Frustrating, because the lilacs I wait for all year are in full bloom and it’s too cold/wet to open a window/door or sit on the deck or even work in the garden and smell their intoxicating scent. 😖First world problem, I guess.

I was in the mood for something warm and fruity today so I reached for a seldom-worn GWP from a few years back, VS Dream Angels Forever, a satisfying combo of blackberry, Iris, and amber. Blackberry is my favorite berry note.

Hoping to find some zen on World Meditation Day at an afternoon yoga class, then just doing some menu-planning and grocery-list making for tomorrow’s weekly shopping trip.

Hoping the 🌞 is shining wherever you are and that it will shine here soon.🤞

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mock_Turtle

Today I’m going with John Tenniel’s illustration of the Mock Turtle from Alice in Wonderland. So, I remember seeing cans of mock turtle soup, which is made from meat, when I was younger ( and also when I was in Shackleton’s hut in the Antarctic) …hence the turtle is shown with a calf’s head, hooves and tail . The Mock Turtle in Alice is also sad, having once being a real turtle. So, I reckon I need a ‘ fake’ perfume that makes me sad…which is basically a lot of mainstream perfumes or anything with Ambroxan. But instead of going in the fake direction, I’m going in the English direction…as mock turtle seems like a very English thing…and wearing a drop of Penhaligon’s Night Scented Stock, which is kind of a melancholy scent, Inguess.

I loved those illustrations as a child; I never understood about that turtle! It was a wonderland, so I never questioned much of what was presented. How amazing to visit Shackleton’s hut – such a compelling historical person.

Turtles are very cool creatures, all the way from little terrapins to giant sea turtles, but I’m making some very tenuous perfume connections, particularly because I’ve got just a few travel sprays with me.
I’m wearing one of my recent purchases today, SL’s La Proie Pour L’Ombre. It’s got shadow in the name, and sea turtles can dive to dark and shadowy depths 🙂 .

I am wearing Bombay Bling today, such a cheerful perfume. Bertie’s vet appointment went well, we discovered he is blind in his right eye which explains why he walked into a door jamb the other day. If he were two we’d be going to the ophthalmologist, but he’s at least fifteen and has other, more pressing medical issues so I am not very concerned.

“It’s a dog eat dog world, and I’m wearing Milk-Bone underwear.” Best quote from Cheers, ever. George Wendt delivered it perfectly.

Productive day today. I made a couple of appointments and washed a comforter after I found dried cat snot on it.

Still pondering about turtles. I realized last night that yesterday’s teapot reminded me of a Godzilla antagonist.

SOTD = Etro Royal Pavilion. Lots of ylang in this!

I had to switch back to my winter pj’s last night. Candy Night is delicious!

I’m a bit lost for this week’s cp too. I was in sunscreen today, so thought it’s close enough to the beach or lakes (where turtles can be found).

SOTD is a sample Suleko’s Baba Yaga. I get powdery green notes which I didn’t know was a thing until today. I like it quite a bit. For some reason I have always associated Baba Yaga with the witch who owned the house in Hansel & Gretel.

Tea of the day is a mix of two darjeelings, one of which was a thunk.

Chiming in very late to say that I wore Chanel 19 EDT to give myself the illusion of backbone for a somewhat fraught meeting with the family CPAs. Sometimes being ladylike and understated just does not work, though, especially with my very loud family — I got trampled. But my back stayed straight!
