Happy Almost-Friday and happy National Chocolate Chip Day! It's also the International Day of Families and Peace Officers Memorial Day. Birthdays: Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, L. Frank Baum, Katherine Anne Porter, Richard Avedon, Jasper Johns. What fragrance are you wearing?
Today I'm in one of my two most-worn bedtime fragrances: Diptyque Tam Dao.
Reminder: 5/16 will be Time for Bed Friday...wear a fragrance you normally put on to wear to bed. If you don't usually put on fragrance then, wear a fragrance you normally only wear in the evening or on special occasions? Suggested by NinaV.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Happy Thursday, everyone!
I wore vintage Perry Ellis For Men last night – it’s a really good sleep scent. To my nose, old-school leathery/mossy aromatic “masculines” – Aramis, Devin, Ralph Lauren Chaps – work well for sleep, since their dry-downs are cozy and comforting, and not too assertive.
Devin 🙂
Devin 🙂
I’m not familiar with Devin, but it’s evoking something special here. Insight? I have the most wonderful associations with Aramis because of my darling dad. I once followed a guy around the market because he was wearing it. And a lot of it so I could safely stay 3-4 ft away and still bask in it.
Oh, it’s a beauty – made by the same fellow who created Aramis, Bernard Chant. It starts out with lovely citrus, which segues into warm, spicy, piney, mossy, leathery goodness.
The current version is adequate; the vintage stuff is really special. (Happy to send you a sample when I come up for air.)
Devin also happens to be the first fragrance I ever owned. (And I wore it in public for the first time in tenth grade to the semi-formal dance.) As you can imagine, lots of memories associated with it.😊
Oh gosh that’s a skin-tingling memory! My Nextdoor neighbor’s son is going to prom next week, and she and I were reminiscing about our first high school dances in 10th grade. Such a special time in life! You are too generous Daniel – I walked by Creed this morning going to my Dr’s appt and almost went in for two samples (one for each of us) of their Irish Tweed since Fragrantica was recently comparing it to Cool Water. Sadly I was running late and very nervous before my test, so I didn’t. Raincheck!
Bernard Chant created some wonderful works of art.
Oh, he did! He should be better known. In fact, it’s hard to find out much of anything about him, at least in my amateur Google sleuthing. But he sure made some extraordinary and influential perfumes.
Hello.
Sotd is Twilly d’Hermes. I often wear this to bed. The ginger and soft tuberose smell warm, comforting and plush. It also smells great lightly mist over sheets.
I might have to try that one night.
I am wearing Gres Cabaret I think for the first time this year. This was basically my first introduction to rose and patchouli together.
Reunited 🙂
I am in Organza, which smells delightfully cosy on this cold, rainy day.
I don’t have strict rules about bedtime scents. When I wear a fragrance before going to bed, it can be anything I want. If I really had to choose, though, these types of perfumes would be more likely picks:
– Lavender perfumes
– Linear and simple
– Clean-smelling
– Warm and resinous when it’s cold; refreshing and cooling when it’s hot.
Maybe tomorrow I’ll wear a “typical” bedtime perfume. But rules are meant to be broken – I wore Opium to bed a few days ago, and it was glorious.
Glannys, you smell wonderful in Organza.
Thank you!
I’m intrigued by your description of « warm and resinous when cold, refreshing and cool when it’s hot. ». Can’t wait to read what fragrances fit that description!
I might have unintentionally misled you. I did not mean warm and cool at the same time. When it is cold I am likely to put on something warm, and when it is hot I will want something cooling. Different fragrances for different seasons.
Well I was ready to go out and blind buy a FB of it! Well if any master perfumers are lurking here to be inspired for new scents- this is one I want to try! You’re quite poetic and creative Glannys- I still appreciate how your using AI to name a perfume layer inspired me to plunge in with CoPilot on my laptop.
Thank you!
Have you tried Neroli Outrenoir? It has smoky and fresh notes.
I’ve never tried Outrenoir, but it’s now on my To Try list (is there a moniker for that here in NST land?) !
AFAIK there isn’t any NST jargon for a “To Try” list.
My bedtime scents are all over the place. It’s often a simple musk or Roberto Cavalli Oro, just because the bottle doesn’t fit in my perfume cabinet so it sits out and is easy to grab. Today I’m wearing a common bedtime (or anytime) scent, Phlur vanilla hair mist.
We are looking at high 80s today with scary looking storms tonight for me, lillyjo, madtowngirl and anyone else around Lake Michigan. My roses are full of buds and I’m hoping the unseasonable heat doesn’t make them open too early.
Joining you in the risk for storms tonight. Hopefully, not.🤞🙏
I knew there was a windy city area person here! Yes, hopefully not. 🤞
I do not like 80´s + storm warning for you all at all ! 🙏🙏🙏 for safety
Stay safe, it’s a mercy it will be during the night, hope you won’t be awaken by thunder.
Thunder is more of a problem for poor Larry the cat, he is not a fan.
Aw, poor Larry! I wish I could send him some of Teflon kitty’s cattitude. She couldn’t care less about thunder.
Hail storms are another matter, though.
Teflon is tough!
She’s a feisty little thing. 😉😸
Ringthing, I am already scared. I’m praying the storm weakens over the lake.
Stay safe!
I hope so too. I’m thinking of wearing White Cube in case we have to head for the basement, it smells like most old house basements. My concern is always that my mom doesn’t lose power.
I wish my old basement smelled as good as White Cube!
I hope we all keep power.
My big concern is my daughters resistance to going in the basement. It’s a battle every time there is a warning and I don’t always win.
Hi fragrant friends,
Am packing to go see my sister!
We will have a few birthdays to celebrate, a delayed mothers day and her grandaughters’ graduation from H.S.
This first grandchild was born two months after my dad died and two months later, my brother in law died. Eighteen years gone in a flash.
SOTD will be Vanille 44. Nothing worn to bed but moisturizer.
No fragrance will travel with me as my sister cannot tolerate.
Oh well. Give the perfume cabinet a rest.
Have a wonderful and special time!
Thank you Laila!!
That’s a lot of tough loss combined with the joyous arrival of a baby. I deeply hope your time together for this graduation milestone will fill all your hearts up! Sorry these precious memories you’ll be making are fragrance free.
Yay, sister time!
The best!!
Safe travels and have a wonderful time.
Oh how nice! Enjoy your time together. 🌷
Bon voyage!
Have a wonderful visit!
I’m in JHaG Ode to Dullness for a sample thunk. It’s actually quite pretty despite the name.
I caved when I got home from work yesterday and turned on the ac. The thermostat said the house was 77 which means the upstairs bedrooms had to be 80 or more. That’s a no can do for sleeping.
Today we will reach 87🥵. As ringthing said, we are in line for big storms and then cooler temps.
We’re supposed to get up to 91 today.🥵
Yikes! Stay cool!
Stay hydrated with that kind of heat! What’s a “sample thunk?”
I will!
lol, a sample “thunk” is the sound it makes when it’s empty and gets thrown into the garbage. cm8 coined that term a few years ago, I believe.
Great phrase ! Who is this auditory description artist cm8? Is that her full moniker?
Haha, it really is, isn’t it? That would be chocolatemarzipan8, she pops in every now and then.😊
Sometimes CM8 will show up as Chocolatemarzipan here at NST. She has 2 user names.
My car said it was 90 here an hour ago.
Fingers crossed we all stay safe tonight 🤞
🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
with you lillyjo !
Hoping that the NSTers in the Midwest have a relatively uneventful night tonight!
Hellooooooo my dears. Yeesh. I’ve missed you and want to tell you all about my visit to l’Osmotheque last month. When I got back I came down with some dreadful sinus infection, my FiL was dxed with metastatic etc., and then I broke my foot. So I’ve been traveling in a boot and crutches to SoCal or watching back to back junky true crime and thrillers.
My France trip now seems like a distant dream, but I will get my act together and at least write up the visit to the perfume archive.
Despite much meditation and self-counsel to NOT buy perfume, I bought a lot of perfume in Paris. So today I am wafting Nicolai’s Iris Medisis and watching Secrets We Keep🩵
You smell great, in the midst of some chaos. Your Paris trip sounds lovely – I wouldn’t stop myself from Paris perfume shopping either. What a dream.
So glad you checked in, was wondering if you’d decided to stay in France 🙂
But oh my goodness Oakland Fresca, what a run of bad luck, and right after you had covid. Hope everything is settling down, and terribly sorry to hear about your FIL…is he nearby?
A little over six hours by car south of us. It’s been hard on my hubby. More so as I am not driving at all. So it goes. So it goes.
Oh dear, that’s a ways, and I bet that is hard on Mr. OF.
Why would anyone not buy perfume in Paris?!
Well. I had this idea that I’d get caught up in the Paris of it all (check), if I started I’d have trouble stopping (check), I’d spend a lot of money (check), and I already have so much perfume (check). Totally unrealistic expectation in retrospect 😉
A rollercoaster of events.
🥴 But I still have Paris, and perfume🧡
A life well lived, then.
OF, you’ll always have Paris! Ha, couldn’t resist.
I’m so sorry that your return has been so fraught with life’s speed bumps. I hope things smooth out soon. Looking forward to your Osmotheque account. I was starting to worry about you!
Omgoodness I’m so sorry to hear about this series of unhappy events, and yes, perfume and Paris has to help a little. But I’ve broken both feet in different places over the years and I know how painful it is! Wishing you a speedy recovery.
I’m wishing you and your family well OF.
I’m glad you had a nice vacation.
Wow, that’s a lot of ups and downs. I’m sending you lots of healing vibes for your foot!
Glad to see you posting today. Egads, what a rollercoaster you’ve been on lately. Hope that your foot heals quickly!
A little bit of backyard heaven: Despite heat, humidity and storms predicted for later in the day, it was a cool & 🌞 morning. We enjoyed our morning ☕️ and biscotti outside on our little bedroom deck, inhaling deeply the nearby lilacs finally blooming, and listening to the soothing sounds of our small waterfall and a multitude of migrating birds singing their thanks for our bird feeders. It doesn’t get much better than that for me! ❤️
This is the only time of year I enjoy wearing floral scents, and I’m continuing florals with a lilac note today in Alfred Shung Sha. So soft, so pretty, so well-blended with numerous florals and a strong lilac presence. 👍
Looking forward to tonight’s monthly Global Neighbors program at my library – showcasing a different country each month, with a sampling of music, dancers, and food! Tonight it’s Poland, my heritage.
Happy Thursday to all! 🐦⬛
Sounds like paradise, I ‘m not familiar with your scent but bet you smell very spring-like.
Sha was popular on the boards in the early 2000’s as were other Alfred Sung scents. I used to work near a TJMaxx and got some of the popular scents of the time very inexpensively and easily there. And, yes, Sha is a perfect scent for this time of year when so much begins to bloom.
I remember Sha from MakeupAlley 🙂
Yum, pierogies! First time I ever had some was in Pittsburgh, PA in the mid 1990’s. Delicious!
Usually the Global Neighbors’ nights feature food samples at the end of the presentation. This time there was a whole array of food – a dinner’s worth! – spread out as we entered! Yes, pierogi (plural is ‘pierogi,’ singular is ‘pierog,’) – cheese, potato, and sauerkraut – as well as cheese and cherry blintzes, a warm mushroom salad and a cold vegetable salad, several varieties of Pączki, cookies, and other things I didn’t even taste. Well, what do you expect with Polish food – we always eat hearty! 😄
I did not know that pierogi was plural! The blintzes and the sauerkraut are also sounding really good.
I wore Cologne Haute Provence to bed last night. One of Nicolaï’s colognes with a nice lavender note.
My daytime scent today was Sarrasins, which I think is probably my favourite Lutens.
Hope you all have a good day today!
Hope you are having a good day too 🌹
I am not a body spray person, but I am wearing Snif Berry Styles 2.5 oz body spray, to try out for summer. It is a totally unpretentious, unserious, and sweet mostly blueberry scent with a rather silly name. The blueberry note isn’t as dark as in V.P. Poets of Berlin. But, it’s pleasantly jammy without being cloying and I’m here for it. I need not seriously right now with what’s going on in the world. The only thing is I wish it was in an EDP or EDT instead. I definitely could wear this fragrance to bed.
I tried that line of body sprays. I thought they we were good but a little on the sweet side for me.
If it weren’t so expensive, “find the best fruity body spray” would be a great Friday project.
Swamped again this week, so haven’t been stopping in much. I don’t usually wear a fragrance to bed, but sometimes I’ll use a lavender room spray. In honour of that yesterday I wore Bogue Mem (though I wouldn’t wear this to bed, it’d distract my sleep). Today I’m in Boudicca Wode, since my hand just fell on it this morning.
I’m looking forward to finally getting PdN Muguet this weekend; it’s been hiding somewhere in the house for a few weeks but it’ll be gifted on Saturday.
It’s gorgeous!
Wode was such a good fragrance.
Sotd Desertland with matching body lotion.
I’m a bit confused/ disappointed. I simple adore my Desertland sample. It had a prominent opening note of juniper and lavender. The FB opens with zip, I’m only getting the middle notes of Angelica and some pine. It’s supposed to be Eau de Parfum. Any ideas? Should I return? Maybe some oxidation at top of bottle, and spray down 20%? It’s a small problem in the big wide world I know, but I’d love some input
Was your sample in a dabber vial (as opposed to a sprayer)? If so, maybe the different delivery mechanism is altering how the juice smells? Alternatively, sometimes the first few sprays from a bottle are off because of oxidation of the juice in the sprayer tube. In my experience that usually only happens with vintage bottles that have not been sprayed in many years, which I assume is not the case for Desertland since it has only been around a few years. But if you have a super sensitive nose, maybe you are picking up on early changes?
The sample was a very good sprayer which has never clogged or stopped working. I tried an experiment with FB on right wrist and sample on left. I wasn’t imagining it. Perhaps I should try getting rid of the top juice? It did come on a wrapped box and is Eau de parfum, so this is unexpected.
Maybe your perfume bottle needs to sit and macerate for a while before it smells like your sample? I’ve had a scent mismatch between a sample and a full bottle before. After the bottle sat for a while it smelled much closer to the sample.
Interesting advice jalapeño! Does that mean? Don’t use or don’t move the bottle? Do I put it in the dark? On a counter? For how long?
Just let the bottle sit quietly in the dark for a while. Bonus points if you still have the box it came in.
As for how long, well, that’s an open ended question. For starters try 3 months and see if it’s any better. You might want to keep a bit of your sample handy as a reference standard.
I second this advice.
Third. Or, just keep using the new bottle and I bet eventually it will smell like what you’re expecting.
Just dabbed on some Frederick Malle Iris Poudre. Feeling refined while I wfh in my daytime pj pants and raggedy sweatshirt. We won’t discuss the state of my hair.
I have a bunch of bedtime scents. Most frequent are Carchel Noa, Hermes Rose Ikabana, Elizabeth & James Nirvana Black, Chanel n5 edp or Eau Premiere, Lutens Femininite du Bois, Narciso Rodriguez For Her and selected flankers Pure Musc & Cristalle, Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream, Aerin Wild Geranium, Chanel Boy.
I like to wear something to bed, since I have many perfumes and won’t get to enjoy nearly as many unless I use perfume at night too. It’s part of an expanding bedtime ritual – knee pillow, heating pad, single earplug in one ear to block out snoring sounds from other side of bed, flat bluetooth speaker from a sleeping headband tucked between my pillowcase and pillow so I can listen to my Agatha Christie audiobooks narrated by Hugh Frasier as I go to sleep (and also block out snoring…), cat curled up behind my knees.
That sounds like a delightfully cozy bedtime set up
You smell fantastic! Am I too obvious if I expect a lot of scents with the word dream in their names for the CP?
Hi Twin! We smell good!
I grabbed Iris Poudre on my way to a memorial service. I went to support a friend and IP seemed like the perfect fragrance. Very comforting.
I thunked my sample of Rose de Jamal from Les Indémodables last night. It’s got a minty note, it’s quite unusual, I like it, but it’s not a love.
I’ll continue the rose theme today with Paestum Rose, that’s a very definite love.
Paestum Rose ❤️
Apples and yogurt smoothie
This morning I chose vintage Diorella which Lillyjo thought I was wearing during the guessing game but the answer was Diorling, the fact is I wear it’s dupe Molyneux Quartz much more often but Diorella behaved well and boy is it long-lasting. Tonight for the CP it’s Dior too, Jasmin des Anges, the reason is that I have 250ml of it and am making a dent by wearing it often last thing in the evening.
250 ml!
It sounds dreamy though.
It’s a perfect jasmine, with it and Jasmins Marzipane and the more complex Olène I feel this note is well represented in my collection, oh and also AdP Acqua Nobile Gelsomino.
That bottle is frightening.
8.7 ounces or thereabouts? I think that’s what 250mL converts to in Imperial units.
Someone could get hurt with a bottle that large.
You’re absolutely right about the conversion😀, oh yes, it could inflict a lot of damage in connecting with someone’s head.
I’ve seen some 6.8 ounce bottles on the Internet lately, and I thought those were bad!
I’m in a sample of Lilac Brulee today. I probably could have just blind bought a full bottle of this, but I was trying to be responsible. So now I will get a FB, eyes open. 😀It is more brulee than lilac, whereas I had expected the reverse, but it is beautifully done.
Tea today is Clipper Ship Nutcracker, which is as good without milk as it is with milk. I’m on a stupid clear liquids diet until tomorrow and I’ve reach the irritable and annoyed at everyone phase. Mr. Vee suddenly had some errands that had to get done right away. 😂
Good luck with what’s happening tomorrow and the rest of the time on the liquid diet! 😬 Do you have some jello you can eat? I find that to be a nice distraction!
“Clear liquids diet”? Is that a prelude to an even more unpleasant procedure?
Ehh, I find the prelude is worse than the procedure. As far as I’m concerned the procedure is a nice midday nap 😂
Ha, wise Mr. Vee! Good luck.
Hello !
Sipping chai tea all day and eating a lot these days.
Nothing wrong with that 😉 are you still riding?
Yes- this week it got canceled because of the rain – but I will be back on hopefully soon.
I have noticed I need to work on my core for the horse 🐴
Sounds heavenly! Enjoy!
I booked my next trip today, I am going to the Baltic states and Poland in September. I’m looking forward to something different compared to more western European cities, and of course the food. SOTD is Rhubarbe Ecarlate.
The food will be fantastic!
That sounds like it will be amazing! Hope the weather will cooperate with your plans.
I’m envious, would love to visit that part of the world and see my ancestral villages.
Testing Spell 125 today. The opening is quite intense but I like the drydown and can detect some similarities in the resinous base to Bengale Rouge (not that they smell anything alike, but perhaps Papillon has an accord used in a few of their scents).
I know I tried something by the brand but sorry to say I can’t remember…
Blue skies and puffy little white clouds a la Bob Ross here today. But very windy. It’s also 20 degrees cooler than it was at the beginning of this week, so the weather is feeling quite brisk.
Teflon kitty is NOT happy to be back on the ear drops regime. I wish there was a way to tell her it’s for her own good. 😿
SOTD = jumped back to the Diane EdT today. It would be a good candidate for a bedtime perfume. However, my SOTD usually ends up sticking around for bedtime. So I don’t do anything special.
Sending you strength to deal with Teflon, if only we could explain.
Thanks Aurora. One of her ears is rather painful to handle so it complicates things.
So sorry that you and Teflon kitty have to go through this again. Hope it heals quickly. 🤗 Sending healing vibes from my three 😽😽😽.
Thank you Laila. And thank your clowder, too. 😉
Hope this round of drops does the trick!
Not sure if we will be dealing with one week or two. Time will tell.
Ugh.
Poor Teflon kitty. It would be great if we could make our animals understand!
Yeah. 😾
Checking in late. We are currently under a Tornado watch.
Ugh…
I am wearing No.5 L’eau.
Hope you stay safe. We are still under it, too, and thus far only had a little rain. 🤞
Nothing going on here but the storm is still about 50 miles away.
Fingers crossed that you just get some rain. Be safe!
Guerlain Liu
Hope all is well Barqs.
