Tuesday scent of the day 3/18

Posted by Robin on 18 March 2025 173 Comments

It's Tuesday and National Sloppy Joe Day. The swapmeet is open for another week! Birthdays: John Updike, Charley Pride, Wilson Pickett, Queen Latifah.  What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Cartier Baiser Volé.

Reminder: 3/21 is International Fragrance Day. Wear a fragrance and tell us why you picked it.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the "Shoryu Kiln Teapot, Tenmoku Gold Picking, Red and White Plum Pattern" is $144 at Amazon.

It’s still cold here, so I am still wearing winter perfumes. Today it’s Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours – boozy gourmand suede.

Thank you for the birthday wishes yesterday. Jalapeno, your virtual soup seems to have helped too!

Eau des Baux from L’Occitane. Such an excellent and reasonably priced scent, very warming on me and long lasting, quite unlike a cooling ‘eau.’ Extremely unisex, reminds some of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille at a much better price point. Oh how I love my 80s/90s mall shop perfumes.

I LOVE Eau des Baux! It’s cosy and long lasting. I agree it’s unisex. Sort of a balsamic or benzoin vanilla. You smell amazing!

For no reason but a whim I’m doing housework in vintage Dior Poison Esprit de Parfum: I have a tiny amount left and the colour’s changed rather drastically but it still smells great (perhaps just a little weird at the top, quickly gone). So much better than what they’ve been peddling under that name for at least the last 15 years. I sure will miss it when it’s gone, but we had a lot of good years together.

I love John Updike’s work, but lately I haven’t been able to concentrate well enough to read his marvelously dense prose. Even re-reading things of his that I’ve enjoyed isn’t working — I loved A Month of Sundays so much and picked it up again a few months ago, but so much of my reading consisted of going over the same paragraph several times that I had to set it aside.

Anyway, this morning I’m in Memoirs of a Trespasser and looking longingly out at my back garden. There are some big pots of day lilies that need to be transplanted, and a heavenly bamboo that needs serious pruning, but March is still in its lion phase here with intermittent heavy rain and wind — not very inviting. Here’s hoping that April comes in lamb-like!

Interesting because I have not been moved to reread Updike either. Was going to say it seems of another age but I reread quite a few even older authors…reading Sebald again right now with no problem.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a long time favorite author, is another I can’t seem to find the way back to…

I’ll be in Leather Jardin today, since I took the bottle out to snap a photo for Hajusuuri. (My bottle looks completely different than hers.) I missed it while in Germany; it’s just such a comfortable scent.

Packing to head to London today. Does anyone have any perfume recommendations that I should check out in my short time there? Les Senteurs won’t be far from where we’re staying, but I’d love to check out someplace new.

Harrods and Selfridges have a very healthy selection of perfumes, exclusives and I think early launches.

Thanks, all! I think Liberty has Astier de Villatte, and I’ve never been to Liberty in all these years, so I may try? I think Bloom is close to some of the shows we’re seeing, though, so if I can get there I will.

I don’t know Fenwick and the Dover Street Market, so I will take a look! Thanks, allo.

If I find anything else, I’ll report back. (Though it’s a short trip and apparently we’re going to the Imperial War Museum when we’re not seeing plays, b/c Ockeghem Teen has been learning about WWI and II in school and finds a simulated trench where she can learn about trench foot more interesting than the British Museum. Interesting about face from when she was four, when it was all about the mummies. 🙂 )

No. It looks like a flask and has a gold ribbed top. I’m having a hard time sharing here from Instagram (or you can follow me at lslouffm to see it; it will only let me share to Facebook and I don’t have a Facebook account). Anyway, if you look at the Fragrantica image (https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Zara/Leather-Jardin-69129.html), it’s close to what I have, except my bottle has a red label glued to the front.

    Happy Tuesday, everyone!

I’m still smelling of Portrait of a Lady, which I wore last night. It really is an extraordinary perfume. As unapologetically huge as it is, it’s also remarkably well-balanced. I don’t wear it as often as a bunch of other Malle fragrances, but when I’m looking for that “wow” factor, this is my choice. And it always makes me feel like a million bucks.

Confession—I have now explored dupe territory. I generally do not like the idea of a company remaking a perfume on the cheap. I think of perfume as art and the noses/perfumers as commercial artists.

I got a bunch of samples from Niche4All and I’m wearing their Apple Musk on one arm and Roja’s Elysium parfum on the other. Shockingly close and the Apple Musk is wearing longer…

Many of the samples are very loud and not for me. I decided to secret them in bathrooms at work and use 1-2 spritzes as room spray. One spray from that tiny sample atomizer is massive.

I hope your explorations are fun and fragrant. Be well.

Have you ever taken a shower and when you go to turn the water off the handle breaks off in you hand?

Well, there is was soaking wet and needing to go outside to turn off the water.

Oye ve. Made for interesting weekend. Repair or replace the entire shower? and of course, it’s upstairs in my townhouse.

SOTD is Bois Imperial. This bottle I think has been my most worn over the past few months. I love the crisp opening.

Going out for a brisk walk. Sunny, but windy and chilly here by ocean.

Read the Careless People book about Meta. Having worked at both startups and media/entertainment here in California, I can attest to the how important these clowns think they are.

Etiquette question — my cousin’s son got married in early November 2024. I have come to realize that the couple has about 6 months after the wedding to send a thank you note. Also, the bride had her shower in late September 2024. This past Saturday, I got a notecard which was a combined thank you for the shower AND the wedding. Because he is a godson, I gave VERY VERY generously to the tune of $$$$. I know people are busy but I am taking umbrage at the combined thank you (why? And I don’t accept being too busy as the excuse) and really, how long does it take to send in a picture and have it printed on notecards? Maybe I am being too sensitive in my “old age”? Or do kids (late 20s) don’t care anymore as to what’s proper?

I learned 50 years ago to thank for everything promptly. With the virtual world, I think the younger generations know nothing about written thank you notes. I now get texts from people as a thank you. I, myself, still do written thank you notes. Just my opinion.

In my extended family if they didn’t get a thank you after the shower they would have told the mother or father and then they would have gotten after the kids. Lol.

Thank you card etiquette has been lost. I used to be a reluctant thank you card writer as a kid but now, as an adult who has been more on the giving side, I am glad I did it.

I regularly send nieces and nephews money and gifts and never once have received a thank you of any sort. I would even take a text message or email since part of what I want to know is that the gift made it there.

I send thank you cards as appropriate but for close family members, I often text them or – sometimes send a photo of the gift along with a text about how grateful I am.

I’m with the texting or even email (with texting issues of unknown origin). I check obsessively weekly and after a month, I just ask if they ever received the notification of a gift card.

ITA with Kris and lillyjo: the shower and wedding thank yous should have been separate. I can see extending a grace period if the couple moved after the wedding.

Never got any thank you notes, calls, emails, or texts from Mr. Jalapeno’s nephews when we got them gifts. Both of them are in their 20’s now…

Commando at the moment as I was just awoken by the emergency alert system because of high winds and a Tatooine-like dust storm. Had to move the camper because the winds were hitting broadside and gusts are around 65mph with sustained winds 35-45mph. Glad I only have to drive from one end of the parking lot to the other end today because this is what I’d call sub optimal driving conditions. 🤣

Based on that, I’m going with something easy and calming because my sinuses are in an uproar again. Omnia for the win! 🙌

Soft 🌞 and a temperature of 69 degrees, Beautiful 😻and Pretty 😻 are relaxing with me on our screened porch, enjoying lots of cardinal songs – nesting season is here! I’m enjoying vintage Guerlain Meteorites, a Springtime favorite of mine and soft like the day.. I love violet scents and like to feature a different one each month – Meteorites is my March choice.

Looking forward to our monthly Green Drinks get-together, tonight’s program features many of the local candidates running for offices in our April 1 non-partisan election. I really like hearing what they have to say in person rather than just reading about it in print or online. We’re fortunate to have so many good community-minded individuals.

Hope you’re all having a good day! 🪻

Beautiful and Pretty are sisters we adopted from a friend who adopted their pregnant mom from a shelter – she kept the mom and two brothers after they were born, gave the last brother to another friend, and we got the girls. They have ‘real’ names, but our friend started calling the eldest sister Beautiful and her sister Pretty, so we often call them that, too. My third 😻that I found in my backyard when she was lost and just three weeks old, our friend often says she’s adorable, so though she also has a real name, too, we often call her Adorable!

    Gorgeous teapot today Robin!

Been having some very lion-like weather here. Yesterday the wind was so bad I could feel my apartment building shaking every so often. In addition to that, at least 3 wildfires have broken out in Colorado. None of them near me, and none were large. All of them have been contained.

On the plus side, this morning was Teflon kitty’s last dose of the detested ear drops. We will find out on Thursday if this round was enough to knock out her ear infection.

SOTD = still wearing SB Florist’s Fridge. Getting close to the end of this sample.
