Friday scent of the day 3/14

Posted by Robin on 14 March 2025 208 Comments

Happy Friday and happy Pi Day, plus happy Holi! Birthdays: Albert Einstein, Diane Arbus, Quincy Jones. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with a hyacinth note, if you have one. If you don't, pick another spring flowering bulb?

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm on day 3 in L’Artisan Parfumeur Jacinthe des Bois, and I could easily wear this for the rest of the season.

Reminder: 3/21 is International Fragrance Day. Wear a fragrance and tell us why you picked it.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Yes. I think they complement each other well – Cristalle is definitely brighter and lighter (more citrus), and Private Collection is darker and greener, but they share that mossy/woody accord that ties them together.

I had two hyacinth forward scents in my collection – Florist’s Fridge by the lamented Smell Bent, and Wet Garden from Demeter. Both were cheap as chips, but unfortunately I couldn’t find my Florist’s Fridge. I’m in Wet Garden, and while it won’t last long, on my skin, it is a very realistic hyacinth scent.

Good Morning NST. Writing while wafting (sounds like a moving violation) just a wee bit of Vent Vert extrait, from a very partial mini that I found years ago at an antique shop when I first fell down the rabbit hole. Very heady and rich, managing to be both astringently green and bracing as the molecules first hit the nose (like smelling salts stuck under the nose of fainted heroines in old movies) but also with honeyed and floral notes lurking shyly in the background as second impressions kick in. There is no mystery for why VV is a classic. The mystery lies in its eternal ability to bewitch and unsettle and as to why it was ever d/c. No matter how many times I wear it, there is always some new facet to explore. That said, this week’s CP has forced me to ponder my collection in search of hyacinth notes and conclude that I don’t reach for green florals and chypres nearly as much as I should. In winter at least, or when it’s cold in L.A. like now, my hand goes to the spicy incensey ambery woody things that warm me rather than the cold green florals that scream early spring to me. I also thought about wearing Chanel No. 19 or Cristalle, two fragrances my mom loved, but those ice queens will have to wait for warmer weather.

Yes, very cold this morning. Dog didn’t mind. Luckily you can still find vintage mini bottles of VV extrait on the Evil Bay for a very decent price esp. considering what a masterpiece it is. The original 1940s formula is the one with the geometric bottle with sharp angles and flat black cap and label. The one with the tall bright green cap like foliage and green lettering is a reformulation from the 90s I think. I believe there was a third version as well.

          • Robin says:
            14 March 2025 at 2:36 pm

The vintage I have is much much more bitter and green than the 90s version. I like bitter greens but this was like the galbanum ate everything else as it sat…I suspect it did not age well. It’s sorta cool but I would not wear it out.

I’m the polar opposite of spring flowers today in the IA chocolate dipped thingy, the decant of which I finally found after searching for days around the camper. I love it, but not as much as Ummagumma, so I’m saved from the threat of a full bottle purchase.

Windy AF here with sustained winds 30-40 mph and gusts up to 55mph. I have a some aromatic goodies waiting for pick up at the post office but they may have to wait until tomorrow because Jumping Jehoshaphat-it’s like a high powered sand blaster out there! The Baby T-Rex was almost blown away this morning. It’s not just the wind, but the sand and dust that blast you and get in your eyes if you’re outside. She was not a fan- ears flat and tight against her head, eyes squinted against flying debris, and giving me lots of side eye while her fleece puffed and flapped in the buffeting winds. The Sandia Mountains are cloaked in particulate matter just like Pig Pen (of Peanuts fame) is cloaked in dirt and dust. Tomorrow looks to be much calmer, thankfully! 💨

SOTD is Amour Indian Holi, because if not today, when?

Last night there were six(!!) deer eating from the bird feeder just off the patio. Apparently it is squirrel-proof but not deer-proof. I live in a subdivision, and not one that is plunked down in an agricultural or forested area so such a large number of deer was somewhat surprising. I was delighted to see them as my affection for wildlife of all kinds knows no bounds, but I do worry about their continued health and safety. This also does not bode well for the native plant garden I have been planning to establish right in the area in which they left hoof prints. Ironic, eh?

You’re right about gardens and deer – My MIL was an avid gardener, and she had her entire yard planted with something or other. The deer from the neighboring woods would always get through her fences and treat it like a big buffet.

Yes, this episode may have answered the question of who keeps eating the asters I’ve planted in the rain garden out front. Thought that could still be rabbits. A few years back a doe hid her fawn right in the middle of the shrub that screens our patio; the shrub is Japanese Andromeda, apparently known in New England as the only shrub the deer won’t eat.

The famous Getty Center garden in the hills of Los Angles planted wild garlic as border foliage around its flower gardens as the plentiful deer are known not to like it. Beautiful delicate violet flowers but stinky. I think the deer just jumped over it.

Loved your deer story! Good luck with the native plant garden. We have lots of bird feeders and squirrels who join them, too. I also had a surprise deer visit several years ago. We live on a suburban street just 2 blocks from our busy downtown area. One day I looked out the front window and saw a couple of what appeared to be very large dogs strolling down our street headed downtown and when they came into full view I was amazed to see they were deer! They continued their unhurried stroll down the block right past my house and turned at the corner, sure enough, headed straight downtown. Never saw anything like it again!

Deer are quite happy to hang out in NJ suburbia. I had a couple of close calls driving at night. Have yet to see any where I am at now, but I know there of plenty of deer in this area too.

I wore Anais Anais yesterday ( our Friday) but today I’m in the hyacinth- blaster Dior Remember Me, a perfume I bought about 25 years ago when I lived in Germany and gave to my mother. I had thought she’d like it as she had worn Dioressence but her tastes had changed and she was more interested in my Helmut Lang, Yoji Yamamoto and CDGs by the 2000s . I had a good view of the moon last night, and the dark shadow crossing it. Also saw Orion, which will disappear from our night skies soon ( a sign of autumn ).

I figured my SOTD would already have been mentioned by now, but it’s not-Chamade! And I’m in parfum EDP and EDT. Very sparing amounts of each one but omg-I do smell fabulous. Very Catherine Deneuve.

Loving everyone’s choices for this fantastic flower. Thanks for always brightening my day 🙂

This champion sleeper went without last night. I swear I watched every hour on the clock go by.

And, could someone please explain why all the beginner yoga classes for baby boomers start at 7am or even earlier? Geez.

Going with something cozy for this rainy, dark day in LA. Maybe a spray or three of Le Lion.

    Volunteering duties this weekend.

I am wearing Frederic Malle Synthetic Jungle for the CP.

I just contacted LuckyScent regarding my package, which is still in limbo. They said they will open an investigation case with the USPS, which might take weeks, if no longer, to get resolved. They can’t issue a refund or send a replacement since the mistake was not from their side. I spoke to the manager from my USPS local post office, and they could not find in the system where the package is right now. I am very upset about the whole thing.
I will eat some ice cream now to cool down and wait until next week to make the next step.

Nice, sunny day here, before the rain arrives and stays for the next tree days. Spring is in the air! Happy Friday! 🌻

I’m sorry to hear about your lost package. I had the very same issue with luckyscent and since then have refused to purchase from them. Abysmal customer service. When I asked about a replacement bottle, they straight up lied and said the perfume I purchased was discontinued and they no longer stocked it. It was Bengale Rouge, and it has never gone out of production and they have always stocked it. I was never a big spender so I’m sure they could care less, but I’ll no longer do business with them.

Thanks for letting me know, Deva. I guess it is the same case with me, since I am not a big spender either. The customer representative I spoke too was not helpful at all and she sounded pretty annoyed, despite me being nice all the time. I will dispute the charges with my credit card. So frustrating dealing with this situation!

Yes, I tried the same with CC company. I did eventually get a refund from LS but it took weeks. In the meantime, I bought another bottle from Indigo which arrived within a few days. Two months or so later, the bottle LS shipped apparently ended up somewhere in Utah (I was in NC at the time), where it was opened, sampled, found wanting, repacked sloppily, and sent on to me. So now I have two bottles. Anyway, I hope the bottle makes it to you eventually. LS must have shipping insurance so I’m not sure why they treat customers like this. Seems counterintuitive to me. Make sure you keep tracking it because after a certain point I think they legally have to refund your money.

Sotd FM Angeliques Sous La Pluie. Not CP but my travel spray arrives this week, and I couldn’t tolerate any scent. Finally enjoying it today. And it’s raining in LA, so petrichor galore. But no petrichor listed in ASLP, but the overall effect is marvelous.

That only took half an hour, our vet is only 5 minutes drive away, but I arrived with blood on my clothes! Phaedra is the most affectionate cat I’ve ever met, but that goes out the window when she sees the cat carrier. I thought I was prepared for it and had a good grip on her, but I still got a lot of scratches.

Wow! Our weather here is as crazy lately as our stock market and the daily political chaos – up, down, all around, and, I swear, inside out! It’s 75 🌞 degrees here, absolutely gorgeous, but severe storms coming in tonight with all kinds of serious wind warnings, and then snow showers on Sunday morning with highs only in the 30’s. Wow again!

I took a walk around the garden this morning and saw all sorts of little green shoots poking up through the ground – my hyacinth leaves are up 2” along with other bulbs including my favorite tiny wild blue Scilla; snowdrops (misnamed this year, no snow to peek through) are in full bloom and have spread beautifully. I was surprised to see my chives up 3”; I love using fresh herbs right from the garden!

For today’s cp, I absolutely love the scent of hyacinths, but only outside. The few times I’ve brought fresh blooms inside their scent is so strong as to be choking. So for today’s cp I wanted a fragrance whose hyacinth note was a quiet one, and I found it in what is probably my favorite classic floral, vintage Worth Je Reviens. I was first introduced to it by my late mother-in-law decades ago, who gifted me with a tiny flacon of the pure perfume, a tiny flat blue disk that fit into its own deep blue leather sleeve, that she bought on one of her Island trips. I’m weaing a few precious drops from it today, but I have Je Reviens in various formulations- I love it in Spring. Its notes are so beautifully and softly blended and I get mostly violet from it, a favorite floral note (and I’m not a person who’s very fond of florals.) And I always think of dear Sophie whenever I wear it; she was a wonderful role model of what a mother-in-law should be.🙏

It’s been a busy week of events and a few instances of connecting with old friends and former co-workers I haven’t seen in awhile, and I’m grateful for those treasured relationships. Hope it’s been a good one for you and a good weekend ahead. ☮️ ✌️

    Frozen mango and yogurt smoothie

Selected Guerlain Rosa Magnifica this morning, it is primarily a rose but there’s hyacinth too, it makes me think of Persolaise rushing to find it when I shared that Mathilde Laurent created it as an homage to Nahema, then he made a post with a glowing review of it, sending his viewers on the hunt for a bottle. It’s very long-lasting. Tonight I am twins with meals, I was saving Chamade for Friday, I’m wearing the extrait, hyacinth, yes but it’s also a complex perfume.

I’m wearing Grand Amour for the CP. It’s one of the few Goutals I have that hasn’t been spoiled by time, it still smells glorious.

So hyacinth, I really don’t know what it actually smells like. All the scents I have with a hyacinth note contain many other florals. And most of them also have galbanum, so I’m wondering if what I’ve always thought of as galbanum is actually hyacinth. Is hyacinth at all bitter? Is it indolic? Does the perfume note resemble the actual flower? If so, I will try to seek out the flower to sniff!

That is interesting, in the Netherlands hyacinth bulbs are more or less available everywhere and lots of people have them in their house. It’s a strong smell, both green and oily, maybe even indolic. Very memorable and not at all delicate.

Hyacinth is potent! Some grocery stores here are selling pots of them in the Floral Department for spring. Definitely not bitter. A touch sweet. It’s one of those smells that, once you have experienced it, you will probably always remember.

SOTD Hermes 24Faubourg. It actually has hyacinth! It’s not very springlike but here in northern Sweden it’s still winter- or rather ”vårvinter”-the springwinter :-). A favorite eason here when there’s still snow and ice but the sun is shining, perfect for being outdoors, especially out on the ice.

I was surprised to find that 24 Faubourg contains hyacinth and wore it yesterday. 😀

Varvinter aka Springwinter belongs in the NST lexicon, like with Almost Friday = Thursday.

I’m just catching up on comments, but I had to tell you how much I like that Swedish word! Vårvinter is what we’re having here in Massachusetts. Cold and sunny! The longer daylight hours are a sign that spring is on the way, but it’s still a far way aways.
I wore 24 just yesterday. There had been so many mentions of it here that I had to do it. I was also surprised at the hyacinth note in it!

My list of hyacinth perfumes was so long, I couldn’t decide what to wear this morning. So I decided to wear a little spray of multiple perfumes across my arms, however, I’ve been getting sidetracked by work (WFH) and wanting to test something again before the swap meet. So the two hyacinth perfumes I currently have on my left arm are vintage Chamade EDC, which I’ve finally decided to put on my swap list, and Grand Amour, which I prefer to Chamade. It’s been a tough decision to try and swap it, but I’m trying to get better about understanding that I can appreciate and like a perfume but never really want to wear it or fall in love with it. On the other hand, I re-tried and am not swapping my rare L’Artisan Humeur Jalousie (Jealous Mood). It’s Olivia Giacobetti with notes of tomato leaf, green leaves, and bamboo. I just need to remember to wear it this spring!

Yesterday I wore 24 Faubourg from a decant from Makeup Alley days and fell back in love with it. I was surprised to see it has a hyacinth note when researching for the cp. It’s so well blended, I can’t pick out many specific notes, and definitely not hyacinth.

Looking forward to the swap meet tomorrow!

I was just searching for info on the Mood Swings collection and discovered there’s a coffret in the full, original presentation on eBay right now. It’s listed for $585.

I know I’ve tried at least a couple others in the collection before and might still have samples of them, but I wasn’t terribly impressed or particularly into the others IIRC.

Maybe someday I will try to grow some hyacinth in containers. Plants would be a nice addition to the deck.

Weather whiplash here today. I was using the A/C yesterday evening; this morning I had to turn on the heat! March Madness doesn’t just apply to sports, lol.

SOTD = CP compliant today in Smell Bent Florist’s Fridge, courtesy of Vee. It’s lovely! Probably one of the best Smell Bent perfumes I have tried. Would have been nice to get a travel size while it was still around.

Haven’t heard a peep about what Brent is up to now. I don’t think he intended to take a permanent break from perfume, though.

Vintage Shiseido Zen today – it’s both CP and Zeitgeist compliant.
I am allergic to actual hyacinths (and to narcissus), but apparently not to the note which is featured in so many of my green forward favorites.

Wearing Quartz today. Thanks to Aurora mentioning that this has hyacinth, otherwise I never would have known. My bottle is not marked as femme or homme; therefore I’m assuming it must be the original formulation. It has the blue wavy cap.
