Tuesday scent of the day 3/11

Posted by Robin on 11 March 2025 156 Comments

It’s (Teapot) Tuesday, and there are 8 more days until the spring equinox (your mileage may of course vary, but meteorological winter is already over). Birthdays: Ezra Jack Keats, Douglas Adams, Bobby McFerrin. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m in Ormonde Jayne Champaca.

Reminder: on 3/14, wear a fragrance with a hyacinth note, if you have one. If you don't, pick another spring flowering bulb?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the William Morris Hyacinth Teabag Tidy is $4 at Lark London.

    Hello.
Sotd is Good Girl Gone Bad Extreme. You know how when you get a compliment on a perfume you’re wearing that day, that certain scent immediately becomes “special”? This is one of those scents. I got I think 3 on different occasions. Not much but most of the time I don’t get any!

I’m in SL Dompteuse Encagee, cause I thought it was spring. Walked out the door in a lighter coat and got stopped in my tracks by the clean very cold air – minus 12 lol. It will warm up but that was a jolt to the senses. Works better than coffee to wake you up.

Hi all. I glanced at the hyacinth list on Fragrantica and found that some of my chypres weren’t listed but when I looked up the actual perfumes, they all have hyacinth. So today it’s the bitter and compelling Paloma Picasso, which I just love. It’s a nice change to have a CP that I don’t need to think too much about (although I try to participate even when my brain doesn’t want to.)
I have my mom every day this week. Today I am baking her some apple crisp and I hope it goes well, I haven’t baked in years, but she’s craving it.

I am wearing Sweet William by Carner Barcelona, because that was what I pulled out of my box of minis. Actually I first pulled out Mon Guerlain, but since I remembered that I really dislike it, I pulled another. Sweet William is quite appropriate for spring, which today started in the 40s but is expected to reach the high 70s in my part of Texas.

I’m trying a 1925 floral chypre from F. Millot, “Crêpe de Chine.” I’d never heard of it until I read Barbara Herman’s thoughts on it in her book, “Sense & Subversion.” On first sniff, you know you’re smelling something from another era. It’s definitely got that old-school abstract floral vibe, with a mossy, leathery, musky, vetiver base. I’m guessing the name is meant to evoke the exoticism of the Orient. Haunting stuff.

Crepe di Chine was my grandmother’s perfume, I remember playing at her vanity and smelling it. She had made a crepe di chine handkerchief with lace and she scented it for me to keep, I still have it somewhere. She was born in 1900.

ah, thx for the memories, Daniel. This was a fave of mine for a very long time. Created by Jean Desprez, supposedly, but then who is F. Millot? I read somewhere that production was d/c a long time ago because the Grasse strain of jasmine used proved too expensive to make it commercially viable. It’s not a jasmine forward fragrance but you can definitely smell it. Jasmine-oakmoss chypre. Calypso, a bottle of this will probably be on my swaplist this weekend, just saying 🙂

I’m still wafting bits of the perfume I put on last night, Guerlain’s Mayotte. I am surprised that the reviewers on Fragrantica complain that it has no lasting power because it certainly does on me. I have a bee bottle with no atomizer (or if I did it’s lost), and so I dabbed it on–a lot, to be honest. I find it an absolutely intoxicating fragrance. It’s got a mad amount of ylang ylang. I swear it has some spicy note in it too but it’s not in any ingredients list. Like cinnamon or something. On some crazy trip to the Galleria back in 2006 I splurged and bought this along with Vega and Sous le Vent in their gorgeous Art Deco bottles and now I keep them safe in the dark reaches at the back of my little perfume cabinet. I have had them out lately and revisiting them is such a pleasure.

It’s an updated version, and fans of the original complain about it not being as interesting, because Mahora had almond and peach, which Mayotte does not. It is altogether a floral bomb! Ha ha, but to me the standouts are the frangipani and ylang ylang.

My bottle, which I found on eBay about five years ago, now only has about 15-20s mls left. This beauty radiates long blazers and mauve pencil skirts!

My parents always used to say it was “ degging down” whenever it was raining very heavily and that’s what it’s doing this morning : raining so hard the drops bounce. The word is from the Lancashire dialect , basically almost extinct but the writer Alan Garner ( The Treacle Walker) uses it. So, not a bright start to the day . But a good reading day. I am wearing a dab from my precious Parure EdT mini and hyacinth is not a listed note but it could be IMHO. I’m finishing the book Anima by Kapka Kassabova, a Scottish-Bulgarian writer, about the disappearing transhumance (the seasonal movement of livestock, their guardian dogs and semi-nomadic people) in remote Bulgarian mountains, and her writing is so mesmerizing that I must now track down everything she’s written. Did someone here recommend her? I can’t remember. And if you like this stuff, the 1925 silent documentary Grass chronicles a season in the life of tribal herders as they migrate to summer pastures in remote Iranian mountains.

Check out her poetry, too. It’s worth searching out ( her very early novels not so much). Some of these early works date from when she lived in New Zealand ( went to university here, we were in the same writing class). The book on Borders is also good.

I think I might get snow next week. I saw that Friday/ Saturday might be severe storms for the Midwest.

Yes. Friday it is going to be in the 70’s with rain and then on Saturday it is going to be in the 30’s with snow. Crazy.

Good morning! I’ve been neglecting NST over the last few days, life has been a bit busy. I’m catching up with myself now and will catch up with NST soon.
Meanwhile, I’m wearing the always lovely Tea for Two.

Not CP-compliant now, but hoping maybe I can get there later. I tried Mancera Instant Crush from my Scentrique samples. Alas, not an instant crush, nor a true scrubber. All the top notes sound lovely (citrus, saffron, ginger, rose supposedly in the drydown), but I smell nothing but an amber bomb with some vanilla. Not my thing.

I have lots of hyacinth, though, so I want to get back to that. 🙂

I’m officially an Old Person, I guess. Yes, I do know some Daft Punk but didn’t realize this was one of their songs!

Do they also have a song for “I wish I’d scrubbed this off this morning because it lasted all day?” 🙂

Looking at Mancera’s site, I don’t think they have a song name quirk (“Black Noir” and “Intense Red Tobacco” and “Hindu Kush” not being song names I know).

SOTD = Guerlain Royal Extract II

I have a decant from pixel (where is she?) from way back in 2020! That was … almost 5 years ago and it’s still going strong. I really should finish it this year. It is a woody green scent with galbanum, moss, and vetiver. Sillage is lower than average although it is nonetheless lovely.

I have a surplus of NYTimes gift articles. So here’s one for cats 🐈 🐈‍⬛ 🐱 because it seems we have more cat lovers here than usual. For what it’s worth, it is NOT a happy article although there is hope yet!

Pretty sure I know what this article is because I read it this morning (didn’t click through on your link). It was eye-opening — I had no idea that vets do almost no research on cats and try to manage them using dog knowledge.

Smoothie is a pear, they took a while to ripen but really delicious.

I applied Angel Innocent this morning and thought this is probably my favorite flanker of Angel. It lasted well too and it has wonderful citrus notes. Tonight it’s Fragonard Grain de Soleil which sounds summery but is meant for coldish weather with all its resins.

I’m enjoying good weather on my day off today.
My official sotd is Gucci by Gucci (brown square bottle) I stopped at the mall and did some sniffing so I have another 5 scents wafting. I ended up getting a perfume compliment at the gas station. I have no idea for which perfume. Lol.
One that I tried is the new JhaG Miami Milkshake. I could smell milky strawberry for a few minutes and then I could only smell ambroxan. I really wish I could smell past it like some people can.

More warm weather here, but today is cloudy instead of the typical Colorado blue skies.

Teflon kitty’s appetite seems to have picked up a bit, which is A Good Thing. Yesterday’s vet visit showed that she had lost some weight since October. She is looking rather bedraggled from the ear drops since those don’t stay inside her ears.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 Poudre. Sticking with Chanel for the time being. I like this one, but it doesn’t project much at all from my scent glue skin.

Aww…kitties and ears. I do hope she feels better soon. I spent way too much of my time with Katrei, my bestest cat ever, cleaning black gunk out of her ears. Not the case now with my ueber-healthy cat; she gets offended if I even try to look in her ears, which are pristine (bless her, and bless not having feline leukemia).

Teflon LOVES almost anything dairy. She’s been getting a little dollop of sour cream as a snack. The vet did say to take easy with it to prevent the potential for pancreatitis.

I survived Day 2 of Many-People-on-Vacation week. I wore Goldfield and Banks Silky Woods. All of us, vacationing and not, were chagrined to get a memo regarding our supposed declining productivity and how we all need to pick up more work. I was NOT thrilled to be reading this on a 14-hr workday.

Whatever perfume I sampled last week dried down beautifully on the shirt I put on at home after I take off my scrubs. It reminds me of a leather bag that had pipe tobacco in it. Trouble is, I can’t figure out which sample it was. Or maybe two mixed together . .
