Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ Spring Forward, 2025

Posted by Robin on 8 March 2025 192 Comments

PSA: Don't forget to change your clocks tonight! (Unless you live in a happy place that doesn't bother with daylight savings.)

Today: our annual spring forward poll. As always, answer as many or as few as you like, or just talk about something else. If it's fall where you live, adjust the questions accordingly.

1. What's the fragrance you'd most like to add to your collection this spring?

2. You have to vote one perfume in your collection off the island. Which one will go first, and why?

3. It's time for (fantasy) Spring Break! Where are you going, and pick ONE fragrance to bring with you.

    Happy Weekend, everyone!

    1. A bottle of Amouage’s Guidance 46 mysteriously appearing on my shelf would be a most welcome surprise.

    2. Truth is, I have a great many fragrances I don’t ever wear, and I could dispense with any number of them. Today’s unlucky bottle: Burberry London For Men. It’s fine, and I actually like it. But it’s “office safe,” and I really have no need for anything so inoffensive.

    3. I’d love to have a week in Ireland, a country I’ve never visited. I’d bring a vintage bottle of Devin from Aramis, which would fit right in with the Irish countryside.😊🍀

Hello and happy Saturday, Fragrant Folk! It snowed a bit last night and today it’s still quite grey, wet, and unfriendly. Not a fan. I’m wearing a cold weather favorite, SL Cuir Mauresque from the tippy black skyscraper bottle.

I’m continuing to ride the “Get Things Done” train and yesterday got halfway through a deep clean of the camper, including oiling the woodwork and fixing a bothersome, recalcitrant drawer. I showed that drawer who’s BOSS! 💪 I was planning to put a hitch extender for my bike rack on the front hitch, but it’s too cold and wet out now. Before I hit the road, I usually do a massive clean out and get rid of everything I haven’t used in the past 3-4 months, excluding seasonal clothing and footwear. So, some trips to the dumpster have begun. Amazing how much crap one can accumulate…

    1) I DID add something to my collection but it hasn’t arrived yet, so more on that later. 🤫

    2) There are a few, but it’s not time to cut the cord just yet. I see a rather dramatic Clean Out of my Traveling Perfume Box in the near future.

    3) I’ll go anywhere that doesn’t include working in a hospital as a nurse. Plot twist! I’ve just been told I’m no longer allowed to park in the RV spaces at the hospital. Really, I’m so ready to GO! 😅

    Happy weekend!

Don’t I remember that your next contract is somewhere that is cold and potentially snowy? Or maybe grey-wet-snowy is different than dry-fluffy-white-snowy, and the latter is what’s next on the itinerary?

I don’t have another contact. I’m debating whether to even renew my nursing license, which expires at the end of April.

Thank you! And yes, very BIG decision. Calling quits to a career I’ve mostly loved for over 30 years is huge, but bedside has just become so horrendous, especially the last few years. I find it very sad because it didn’t have to be this way. Many young nurses here are so disillusioned and unhappy, they won’t be bedside in two years. They’ve had three (staff nurses) on nights quit since I’ve been here. And all of it is completely avoidable with good management, reasonable pay, and acceptable staffing.

Big decision. My sister is her 49th year? Every year she says the same thing and then she renews everything. She had no CNAs yesterday.
But then you know that I believe there is a special place in heaven for nurses.

This is such a long and convoluted story I won’t waste your time with it. But, I’m my opinion, it has to do with more than parking, and that’s all I’m going to say. I was parked where I was ALLOWED to park. Until yesterday. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I just read about multi-million $ homes in SF Bay Area where homeowners (even the absentee ones) leave out white cones to reserve parking spots on a public street. This is not allowed but they do it anyway.

Some people are nuts. When I lived in my sticks and bricks, I had a neighbor across the street from me who would key any car parked in front of her house. The folks next to her also claimed she was putting nails in the curb area in front of her house. This was public street with parking legally allowed on both sides. Absolutely bonkers.

Honestly I’m not getting as much lilac as I would like. It’s extraordinarily sweet and reminds me a bit of the Kyse perfume , name escapes me, with lavender and shortbread cookie notes.

It’s been in my to buy list forever!!! I think it’s called Lavander Fravolli? Or something like that. The fig one she makes is also on my to buy list. It’s a sweet milky fig. Kyse makes primarily gourmand fragrances.

The hand went to 24, Faubourg this morning — gosh, it’s been a while since I last wore this. It’s wonderfully spring-y, in an opulent way.

The only thing I can think of as far as adding to my already-too-big collection is a bit of vintage Diorling. Any formulation, although I do tend to like the vintage EDTs best. (I have given up on hoping for a bell jar of De Profundis or a smaller-than-vat amount of Cuir Cannage. Missed my window on both of those. Sigh.)

Off the island? I have a number of things that haven’t seen the light of day in years. I hang onto them thinking that tastes change and their descriptions must have appealed to me at some point, but the urge to revisit them just never seems to hit me. For today’s poll, I nominate Evening Edged in Gold.

Dream vacation … I’ll follow Daniel to Ireland, with perhaps a side trip to Skye, and I’ll take Bel Respiro to blend in with the local scenery.

I’ll have to try that with some of them. I tried spritzing Ivoire as a linens spray, but it seemed to sharpen the scent even more than on skin — didn’t work for me. But some of them might —thanks for the idea!

Spring hasn’t come yet where I am, still lots of snow everywhere and cold weather.
The bottle i would like to add is Diptyque l’Ombre dans l’eau., maybe i will get it in Paris next month.. I tried to get a sample in a big store that opened up in my city, I am really disappointed that they are not giving any samples anymore and charging an arm and a leg for these bottles.
I am not ready to say goodbye to any of my bottles.
I am planning a trip to go to Armenia to see my daughter who is volunteering there for 7 months.

Wow, no samples? I don’t understand that business model. I wonder if it’s at the brand’s instigation or the distributing store? Can’t imagine a reputable perfume brand refusing a small sample to a potential customer, but what do I know? 🙁

Good heavens, what store is that? Sounds like a perfect way to make sure no one who cares about perfume, except as a status object, will ever buy there. No thanks.

(Checks wrist, is wearing a scent from this month’s sample set from Scentrique. ‘Course, I had to pay for that, but if I went in I could sample for free…)

When Macy’s stopped giving samples I asked why. The SA told me it was because too many people were coming for free samples and then selling them online.

I’m calling BS on that reason. I can’t imagine selling a ml or two online. How is that even worth it? Especially because most of the scents sold at Macy’s are available on discount sites. One thing I’ve learned is that Big Business will ALWAYS blame the little man/low wage employee/consumer for the changes they make to run a business into the ground so that CEO’s and shareholders get maximum earnings. It’s absolutely insane. People need to just stop buying at these places. I said goodbye to Target and other business whose ethics/politics I find questionable. There’s power in withholding money from these money hungry corporations who give nothing back to the community which sustains and enriches them. BYE! 👋🏼

But insurance still doesn’t pay, because you have to meet your deductible and then your max out of pocket. So you pay for insurance only to keep paying for healthcare anyway, so not much savings there! 🤪

      • Zephyr2 says:

I wonder if people are getting the samples free at stores and then buying the full bottles online elsewhere. I am not opposed to paying for samples, as long as cost is reasonable. I like when one can credit the cost of samples toward a full bottles online.

Off the Island: Too many to mention. Currently in the process of decluttering. The goal is to keep *ten*, which means 40-50 will have to find new homes

Spring Trip: Now that there is direct TGV service connecting Paris and Berlin, I hope to finally get there! The scent I’m bringing is new(ish) love ‘Parfum de Peau’ by Aime (perfume oil & edp, as the bottles are tiny!)

While the commenter wasn’t me that is pretty much how I operated from 1970 to 2010. No more than seven bottles. I kept a list of what I wanted to purchase next but wouldn’t purchase until at least one bottle was finished. I usually used about 30 ml per month so the cycle was quick. I won’t tell you how many bottles I have now 😝

SOTD: Montale Chocolate Greedy from the Scentrique discovery set I just got. Too straightforward, straight up chocolate with nothing complicating it so far. (Gourmands are iffy for me…some I love, some not.) It probably also doesn’t help that I like chocolate IRL, but only in small doses.

    1. I have a bottle of Lush Ginger in the mail now. Enabler pin to Gail!

    2. I finally voted the one scent I didn’t want off the island a year or so ago. There’s pretty much a reason I have every bottle I have right now, so nothing comes to mind.

    3. Morocco! One of these days. Instead we’re headed to London for a long weekend on spring break, so I really shouldn’t complain. We wanted to catch Brian Cox in “The Score” while it’s on. (It’s about J.S. Bach, so…something Mr. Ockeghem is interested in.)

Have you tried Ummagumma? One of the reasons I like it so much is that it’s not a “hit you over the head with a chocolate bar” but a nice blending of chocolate, both dusty and sweet, with incense. While you definitely get chocolate, it’s not simple minded or linear.

Your wonderful descriptions make me want to retry this one, Deva. I’m glad Fragrantica has a ‘for test’ column where I can keep track of all the scents I want to try/retry. Many of them inspired by NST recommendations! Oh, and I am a total fangirl for Tan Twan Eng after reading about him here so thank you Robin and Apsara and Kanuka. I too am now impatiently awaiting his next book. Then I tracked down Martin Booth and read Golden Boy about growing up in 1950s Hong Kong. Fantastic reading, all of it.

For the farmers market this morning is was Chanel Comete and now after showering and errands Amouge Opus X (thanks to a generous NSTer) This is a metallic rose like no other..

    1. I would like for spring Lilac Love
    2. I have a Givenchy neroli that I could part with
    3. Fantasy spring break would be somewhere very fancy that serves high tea and I can wear a spring dress and a hat, stuff myself with scones and clotted cream (and since this is a fantasy) I would NOT gain a single pound after eating towers of sandwiches.

I have been utilizing my connections at the library and doing a lot of genealogy research. Looking into one’s family past is very interesting. The research librarians are really helpful and I am finding out things I never knew before.

    2. I may get some flack, but I’d vote off Shalimar eau de cologne. Somehow on me, I get almost a barber shop vibe. Not good.

    3. I’ll spring-break right in my own area. This is a vacation destination for many with wineries and beaches all over. My niece is coming out in late April for a Bachelorette party; she wants to get together for dinner the night before so we booked a room at the same resort she’ll be at. Should be fun!

Shalimar has worn such a groove on my olfactory brain that I can no longer wear it, though occasionally I have to smell the vintage extrait just to remind myself what pure beauty smells like. It is like certain albums I have played to death over the years that no longer move me. Too much of a good thing, perhaps.

    3. Winter is dragging on here, and I would love a few days on a warm, sunny, very very quiet beach! I would probably take the Light Blue flanker I bought last summer, the one in the pretty white and blue bottle. And happy books to read/ listen to!

Another linden fan here, apsara. Always reminds me of the old world, where majestic lindens line the big boulevards and send out their tantalizing tentacles of scent each spring.

    1. I wish the Easter Bunny would bring me a bottle of Amouage Reasons, but I’m not optimistic about that happening. If it’s up to me to add a new bottle, the more likely option I’d want is the new Arquiste Almond Suede. I tried it on skin a number of times and it was always very warm and enjoyable–it’s quite sweet but I definitely get a lot of suede with it too. I would like to do a side-by-side comparison with Daim Blond, which I own, to see how they match up.

    2. I’ve got some fairly decent “department store” perfumes that I no longer wear, and a few nicer ones, such as Hypnose, that I just don’t like any more.

    3. Fantasy Spring Break: I’ll join ltsg and others for high tea at that fancy hotel in Capetown, South Africa! If I can find the name of the place in my friend’s Facebook posts, I’ll share it here later today. Plus, the scenery in Capetown looked just incredible, with the huge Table Mountain, wineries, a huge botanical garden, and the blue blue ocean. For high tea at a fancy place I’d maybe wear something like the Daim Blond mentioned above–elegant but a skin scent. I don’t want my perfume to interfere with others’ enjoyment of the delicacies on offer!

    SOTD = Tauer Sundowner

Great perfume, less than stellar name, but what can you do 🤷🏻‍♀️? This would have been perfect for during the week with its label artwork. It even has that Broadway boogie-woogie vibe going!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/DG8h2sgODkg/?igsh=eXM2b3J1dGRzdjI3

I have nada on my list of perfumes to purchase (that low buy is really working), I have too many to list as being voted off the island (their time will come, I’m sure), and I haven’t selected where I want to go (perhaps enough traveling for a while).

I haven’t joined the gym yet and will do so once my RealID license shows up. There’s almost an order to the sequence of events for obtaining official documents. Next on my list, although no hurry to do so, is to renew my passport unless I end up wanting to go somewhere outside of the U.S.

I hear demand for passports is up. Probably ought to take care of it sooner, when you don’t mind a wait, rather than be anxious and have to pay the expedited quick time fee, which is substantial!

I’m eyeing a vintage Samsara EDP, although it is not the big love that some others from Guerlain are, just a good deal I think

Still EL Youth Dew Amber nude which I used to love and I have a bub, stupid me, otherwise I love all my perfumes

Happy International Women’s Day! To celebrate the day – and my love of patchouli in March – I’m wearing BPAL’s Nasty Woman, not in any negative sense, but from a positive sense of strength and power – I can do anything! – and celebration of women’s achievements. Earthy and sensual, with notes of black fig, patchouli, bourbon vanilla, honeyed amber oud, and loukhoum, it’s perfect for the day.

    For the poll:
    1. Nothing at the moment.
    2. Probably some vintage Dior J’Adore. I won a bottle years ago at a fragrance event and it just doesn’t do anything for me despite its many admirers.
    3. The Pacific Northwest is still high on my list, not sure of my scent, something green and foresty, maybe Clinique Wrappings?

HAGD! Sharing 🌞 ☀️ with you!

Trying Jasmine Freak today and notes are below…a fruity, somewhat indolic ylang bomb…it’s kind of got that scratchy aroma chemical vibe to my nose…if you know, you know. ehaeheh 😆

    1. What’s the fragrance you’d most like to add to your collection this spring? I have been contemplating Hilde Soliani Panna Montata for a while and even bought a 2 ml sample after I drained a dabber. Sadly, I still like it.

    2. You have to vote one perfume in your collection off the island. Which one will go first, and why? It’s a lot more than one ehaeheh I have lots to cull and really need to make some progress this year.

    3. It’s time for (fantasy) Spring Break! Where are you going, and pick ONE fragrance to bring with you. Some place relaxing with maybe the aforementioned Panna Montata.

Head Note: Mango, Black Pepper, Blackcurrant, Sweet Orange

Heart Note: Bourbon Ylang-Ylang, Jasmine Egypt, Tuberose India

    Base Note: Musk, Cashmere Wood

I want to do a hyacinth week starting Monday. Today I am wearing Caron Pour un Homme – trying to reduce some stress with this creamy green lavender.

    1. Nothing for now.
    2. Well, out of full and partial bottles, possibly Rose Flash. I still like it, but I do not love it. But there is not much left in the bottle anyway, so I might finish it soon. Must remember to wear it often.
    3. Already did it on Friday with Neroli Portofino.

Happy Sunday. SOTD is Diptyque Eau Capitale, which is perfect for the sunny spring day we are having.

    1. What’s the fragrance you’d most like to add to your collection this spring?
    – I just did it, two days ago I bought VC&A Bois d’Iris

    2. You have to vote one perfume in your collection off the island. Which one will go first, and why?
    – Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt. One of my first purchases once I fell down the rabbit hole, now it does nothing for me.

    3. It’s time for (fantasy) Spring Break! Where are you going, and pick ONE fragrance to bring with you.
    – In a month I am going to Cape Town, but that’s a REAL Spring Break! For a fantasy one I would pick Antibes in France, I would eat cheese and baguette and I would wear FM Heaven Can Wait. 🇫🇷

I would say it’s a sophisticated, comforting iris scent, woody and not too powdery. It stays close to the skin, but I can still smell it on me after hours of wearing. The dry down is also beautiful, and I think Robin described it very well in her review: https://freebox.it.com/2009/09/22/van-cleef-arpels-bois-diris-fragrance-review/%3C/a%3E%3Cbr /> Elegant and very enjoyable to wear.

Have y’all noticed how clever Robin is to prime the pump for next weekend’s swapmeet by making us consider and list fragrances that we would vote off the island? I’m making my list and checking it twice but I have *plenty* of fragrances that could go and unlike the disciplined NSTer who aspires to only 10 bottles, I’ve got exponential numbers in my collection. Still wafting last night’s scent which was L’Occitane’s Immortelle de Corse, courtesy of Hajusuuri. (thank you!) I might just reapply this morning. As to my next purchase, I’m on a no-buy, kind of, but Italy is on my mind after watching yesterday’s Strada Bianchi bike race (oof that Pogacar crash) so I’d love a bottle of anything by Profumum Roma that contains myrrh. I also love their big chunky apothecary-like bottles and labels, the Roman/Latin statuary inscription font, the whole package. I would buy this fantasy bottle at one of the chic minimalist Rome PR shops on my next fantasy vacay to beautiful Italy.

I haven’t tried that one so I can’t compare. My go to was always SSS Incense Pure. The Encens Divin is a bit more airy and lighter. I have read that it’s been compared to Dior Mitzah but with less spice? It has a touch of amber (labdanum and vanilla). It’s not, to me, in the same vein as Cardinal or Avignon (which I also have). Hope this helps!

Wearing sample of Fugazzi Vanilla Haze. Nice but not sure it adds anything new, though I will give it more time. I am looking for a vanilla that has a white floral/coconut note but not super strong/sweet. I have a Shea Moisture Coconut hair conditioner spray that has something in that vibe.

I am continuing through my rose fragrance samples , started this a year ago. I retried Delina and, boy, my husband hated that one. He called it “kitty litter” – before the kitty used it, but still. I am starting to think I will table the whole rose pursuit or have it on the back burner.

    1. I am debating getting something new versus just getting BUB Chanel No 5 Eau Premiere. Lots of samples to try. I just bought Vanagloria and I like that one very much. I think lead contender for something new is Perry Monte Carlo Nosy Ylang Ylang Nosy Be.

    2. Lots from my collection I rarely wear, just because my tastes have evolved. Usually if I just buy something and decide I don’t care for it, I get rid of the perfume right away. This is mainly with buying unsniffed. But the ones that are just past loves I tend to keep, thinking I may someday want to go back to them.

    3. I will be covering for coworkers going on their spring break so my wish for the week is not to get crushed by the workload. For fantasy or future trips, I like to go to Tasmania.

17C and sunny today, pretty much perfect weather. I’m starting to think about spring cleaning. I will start with the kitchen I think.
Je Reviens vintage EDT which I always feel is a little bit melancholic but beautiful all the same, and tonight Silences parfum de toilette, a tenacious little number I haven’t worn it in a year, crunchy green and different from the modern EDP.

Still hanging out in No. 5 L’Eau for the weekend. It’s perfect for the springlike weather I am enjoying right now.

    Poll answers!

    1. If I was in a buying mood, I’d strongly consider Chanel No. 19. I keep waffling between the EdT and EdP, though.

    2. Off the island? Agent Provocateur Aphrodisiaque EdP. Despite the racy name and packaging, it’s a very mundane fruity floral. I can see a high school girl easily wearing it.

    3. Fantasy Spring Break? I’d check out one of the ice castles up in the Colorado High Country, assuming they haven’t been closed due to warm weather. If they have been, there’s always Hawaii. Not sure what I’d scent the trips with.

    Sotd is Grandiflora Madagascan Jasmine

    1. The Zoo Tubéreuse Organique has piqued my interest.

    2. It might be Fzotic Ummagumma because I can appreciate its beauty but I’m not loving the chocolate note.

    3. I’m always going to Paris in my dreams and heading straight to the Palais Royal SL boutique fill in a gap in my SL collection🌸

I ordered a sample and will report back.

I don’t really know about it other than a knowledgable contributor on Persolaise’s live posts said it’s her current favorite tuberose fragrance, it’s apparently a light floral, not a heavy hitter, and I am a fan of Christophe Laudamiel, the perfumeur of the brand The Zoo.

What about it–are you wearing it, or do you want it?

I WANT IT desperately intensely passionately! It’s so incredibly beautiful. I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Why did they let it go out of existence?

I am wearing it. I have the bottle that is in the hefty thick fluted glass. It’s a splash. I think it was released in 2008 or 2009? My first time wearing it and it is stunning. I am doing my own community project of wearing classics this week. I also have Jolie Madam and Miss Balmain in the line up as well as Dior Eau Fraiche.

It’s a gloriously 🌞 Monday with temps in the upper 60’s! I’m mirroring the sun in the very yellow, long d/c, YR Pur Desir de Mimosa, another favorite scent note of mine in early Spring. I have several of the fragrances from this line – the Rose, Lilac, Orange Blossom, Peony, and Mimosa – and they were all inexpensive but fantastic.❤️

Numerous people sitting outside my library on my morning visit, two with beautiful dogs having a leisurely chat. So good to see! Keeping that springtime vibe alive today, we’re headed to the Orchid Show at the Chicago Botanic Garden this afternoon.

Hope the ☀️ 🌞 is shining on you! 🌸🌺🌹🌷🥀

It was fantastic and the displays were incredible! The theme this year was India Blooms, and it featured not only the more than 1,000 orchid varieties grown in India but also a glimpse of the culture, religion, food and architecture of the country. I actually felt like I had an all-too-brief but thoroughly enjoyable mini-trip to India. It was a wonderful escape for awhile from the real world!

I remember falling in love with both the scent and the leaf bottle. While it is just a small decant now, it still smells pretty. I’ve never tried the original formulation.

SOTD = Byredo Reine de Nuit Extrait

Holy guacamole! It is so good – dark rose, patchouli, incense, saffron … Thanks to apsara for mentioning her to-be-muled bottle.

Not counting yesterday, today is the perfect weather day: sunny, mid- to- high 60s so I walked to get my exercise in AND to leverage my annual subscription for “free” coffee ☕️.

I also looked up perfumes with hyacinths so I am all set for the rest of the week!

Me too with the hyacinth! I also saw someone from where I used to work by coincidence. She was in town for a friend’s funeral and I was like is that someone from my job a long time ago and indeed she was! She has a long drive home (DE) though so I don’t envy her that!

SOTD is Parfums de Marly Palatine, from this month’s Scentrique discovery set. I thought the opening was nice. I liked that it reminded me of the Palatinate, where I was living recently. Then I looked it up online and, holy moley, no. It’s not $400 nice.

Weather is lovely in my neck of the woods today as well, although we have storms coming this week. Not complaining though, we need the rain!

My SOTD is Comete, which I have worn a few times now. Still cannot quite put my finger on this one. It reminds me of a few other Chanels. It does have a hint of that aldehydic signature, but it’s not as strong as in some Les Exclusifs. I definitely get a hint of a lipstick note that makes me think of Misia. And the musk in the drydown smells similar to the musk in Jersey. It definitely keeps my interest, is not linear, and is very very pleasant, which puts it ahead of most of the new releases these days. But with Chanel prices now, that would be the bare minimum I would expect!

A bottle is out of the question since I’m not looking to acquire much right now, but I would consider a decant. Also, if I were to get a Les Exclusif, Boy would be my #1 choice right now. I regret not getting Boy before the several price hikes.

Also enjoying gorgeous weather today. I think the high temp was 71 degrees F? It made taking Teflon kitty to the vet easier.

Unfortunately, Tef has another ear infection. So $300 later, I have ear drops, an antiviral medication, and Teflon had an antibiotic shot at the vet’s office. Not looking forward to a week of ear drops. Poor kitty.

    SOTD = still in No. 5 L’Eau.

We had a very busy weekend and I wore Kyoto both days to stay calm, which helped. Today I have a whole laundry mountain range, which makes me think of Jalapeño, and I have wafted tons of Shalimar while accomplishing little domestic chores. All of the laundry is folded and put away, I just love that feeling. The weather is gorgeous here today too, the whole weekend has been. Such a nice change.

Domestic chores are good. I just went through all my bedroom drawers and got them rearranged so I am sure I will be looking for things in the wrong places for a while. Will tackle the closet tomorrow and then I just have just one more room to go. I did all the kitchen and bathroom drawers and cupboards last week. I have to admit, it does feel good to get done.
