Tuesday scent of the day 2/11

Posted by Robin on 11 February 2025 162 Comments

It's Tuesday and Inventors’ Day aka Thomas Edison’s birthday. RIP Tom Robbins. What fragrance are you wearing?

I woke late and am already behind for the day. I will pick a fragrance later! Tea at the moment is a green Mao Feng from Upton.

Reminder: 2/14 is Valentine's Day. Wear a fragrance that expresses your feelings about the holiday, or that reminds you of someone you love.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Crowned Heart teapot by Marin Montagut ("Marin Montagut works on each of his tableware models by drawing inspiration from old-fashioned French tableware. The tableware, of rare finesse, is made of enameled porcelain. Each model is made by hand, resulting in unique pieces") is €120 at

I tried putting on Sintra first, but it has way too much vanilla, so I switched to Irish Leather. Much more my style, with juniper. I am going to explore more Memo scents with some decants.

I really enjoyed Tom Robbins back when I was younger. Can’t believe he was 92! Seems like yesterday to me that I found a ragged copy of Still Life with Woodpecker in a used book shop. I was young enough that some of it went over my head but old enough to catch the sly wit and humor of much of his writing.

Wearing a bit of the original Bottega Veneta just because. Had hours and hours of sleep, so feeling ready to launch myself into the world today. Watch out world! 😜

I had my haircut last week!
I had been itching for a “hime cut” for quite a while and that’s what I went for. Little did I know, it’s actually trending at the moment, but with another name, the “jellyfish cut”. It’s sported by Lady Gaga and others.

Interesting! I had to look that cut up — I’m not up on the latest anything! How do you like it so far? My hair has been a basic layered bob with bangs for about a century now, except for a couple of phases when I thought I wanted something new but it turned out I didn’t really. 😆

I am liking it! Bob had also been the cut for me for many years, though the length may vary. My hair style changes now and then but one thing that never change is bangs!

Tam Dao in moderate application, is received favorably by most people, I find. To the uneducated nose, it just seems mellow but unindentifable. To the more educated nose, it’s a nice little sandalwood.

February is pitiless, and it is boring. That parade of red numerals on its page adds up to zero: birthdays of politicians, a holiday reserved for rodents, what kind of celebrations are those? The only bubble in the flat champagne of February is Valentine’s Day. It was no accident that our ancestors pinned Valentine’s Day on February’s shirt: he or she lucky enough to have a lover in frigid, antsy February has cause for celebration, indeed.”
      ― Tom Robbins, Jitterbug Perfume

Also, read Jitterbug Perfume when it came out and remember literally NOTHING. Not a thing. And with apologies to TR, and with thanks because I know I really enjoyed reading him at the time, he got cut in my last book cull so I don’t have copies of any of them anymore, except Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas because I bought a used copy and still haven’t read it…it is in one of many piles of “books to read”, somewhere in my house.

I remember bits and pieces from his books, but not much more. They belong to that period of my life when I was reading Tom Wolfe ( like you) , Thomas McGuane, Edward Abbey, Pynchon etc. I am thinking that I might reread something this week

I loved Thomas McGuane. The New Yorker has a short story of his every so often, so he is still writing (and “sounds” pretty much the same as ever) but I don’t know if he is still doing novels. I have never read Pynchon, and Edward Abbey only a bit of the non-fiction. If you read lots of Edward Abbey fiction tell me the best one to try.

I am rereading Sebald’s Rings of Saturn, maybe I’ll see if I can find Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas after that.

I think Monkey Wrench Gang is the classic Abbey. For McGuane I liked 92 in the Shade, and for Pynchon The Crying of Lot 49. But I haven’t read either McGuane or Pynchon for over thirty years. I think they might have been taught in an American lit. Post modernist paper along with Ishmael Reed and Doctorow, maybe?

I saw a review last week of a collection of just-published Sebald essays ( collected after death ) and it didn’t sound too good in that it was quite academic and bitsy. Rings of Saturn is terrific, eh? All of them are. I read an interesting biography a couple of years back that I enjoyed, a good book if you know his work because of all the references. Will try and find it for you

    Hello.
Sotd is Prada Candy. I should’ve gotten a bub of Candy Night when I had the chance because the chocolate note is so delicious.
It’s funny how our taste in things change. When I was much younger, I’d only wear silver-toned jewelery because I thought it matched my skin tone best. When rose gold became a thing, I switched because it’s prettier on me. Now that I am older, I am starting to appreciate gold things…

Yes! ALL my early jewelry was silver, then for some years much of it was costume, and only when I got older did I want gold. Luckily also lost interest in having lots of jewelry choices…I wear the same gold earrings & rings pretty much every day and again luckily for my wallet, don’t care about necklaces or bracelets.

Started with Grandiflora-Michel, which is gorgeous in the cold air. I bought SL Parole de L’eau and it just came in-lemons, like Fleurs de Citronnier, and eucalyptus. It will be nice for the summer.

Not afiliated, but the Bay has a nice beauty promotion-if you buy any SL product you’ll get a 10 ml Ecrin Fumee. Just in case anyone needs more SL scents in their life 🙂

Last night’s scent was SL Bois et Fruit from a decant received I think in the last swapmeet. Thank you swapper! I love all the Lutens Bois fragrances, including of course the first one, Feminite du Bois. In honor of Valentine’s Day week, I shall wear Theorema later, as the DH loves it. I tell him to enjoy it while he can as it’s d/c. One fragrance he absolutely doesn’t love is L’Air du Desert Marocain by Tauer. Each time I wear it he wrinkles his nose and asks me in a downbeat tone what I’m wearing. So I wear that one when he’s not home. It lasts into the next day, but by that time it’s much less strong. But he might also come around. He used to say that Parfum Sacre was too ‘musky,’ his term for frags he doesn’t care for, but last time I wore it he liked it, so there is hope. Kanuka, I put that Australian book Juice by Tim Winston on my reading list, thank you! It sounds good. Sounds a bit like The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

It has a similar feel to The Road but is more interior, less aggressive. It’s a shift for Winton who is best loved for his western Australian surfer community, working class books. A couple of his books have been made into films, and Breath is probably the best of these ( director Simon Baker).

Sounds great! I will seek them out. We have our own west coast surfers and I’ve really enjoyed the fiction they have spawned, especially Kem Nunn’s Tapping the Source, Tijuana Straits and The Dogs of Winter. It’s Surf Noir, with excellent writing. And also a period of funky cheap apartments on the beach and a lifestyle that is long gone.

In St. Clair Casablanca for this sunny crisp February day. We were thinking of booking a museum tour in Paris (adorable hubby’s travel anxiety is such that I hoped a tour would let him obsess about fewer details) but there is a problem with the airline tickets out of Detroit which might scuttle the whole project. Of course we could find a cheaper hotel in Paris, but I am too old to sleep is a picturesque little place where holes on the floor pass for plumbing-been there, done that- and some of that “padding” of the fees is a reserved set of slots for the Louvre so we don’t to stand in line for 5 hours, and a trustworthy way to get our baggage from Orley to the hotel for a known price in a timely fashion, all of which I could do while maintaining equanimity, but dear AH can’t even think about it months ahead of time without a meltdown. Ugh. Sorry, shouldn’t be complaining here. Maybe we will just go spend a few days in Yellowstone, or the Grand Canyon, instead. Those venues are a pleasant challenge for him, rather than an overwhelming trigger.

What about an actual, fully organised “ tour” package that covers hotels, sightseeing etc. with a guide. Something that is fully organised, with a professional leader might alleviate his stress while allowing you to see the sights? Or maybe somewhere within US where you can get to with direct flights? Or, how about a really cool organised tour within your state that focuses on history, nature, arts, food or whatever…again low stress as it is all organised.

You are so kind. We drive all over the U.S., no problem. Overseas, he has only traveled as a sort of mendicant monk on a pilgrimage of one sort or another, so taking an actual destination vacation for pleasure and relaxation just is overwhelming to him. I really shouldn’t have vented. We will work it out. If all else fails,I will go with my sister and the hubbies can be grumpy together, and play golf, or something.

I cleaned my entire kitchen yesterday. Pantry shelves, fridge, freezer, under the sink, cabinets…done and done. Took forever to get motivated.

And then foam rolled for like an hour while watching We Live in Time on Max. Finally it was free streaming.

Post shower boxing up books and audible CDs and other stuff I won’t resell to the resale shop.

I see Chanel is raising the exclusifs pricing again. I guess the ones I have will be the ones I have.

Post shower I think Allure will do nicely. Love the teapot, but heading downstairs for final cup of coffee.

How much will they be now? Geez, come on Chanel! Like you, I’ll be happy with what I’ve got and pleased as punch to have two of the exclusifs in extrait form. The spray sample of Coromandel edp has almost zero lasting power in me, which I find interesting as my BdI EDT lasts forever. Wondering if price changes also come hand in hand with reformulation…🤔

I think they are going to 500.00 now.
        Crazy town.
I want a bottle of Dior Tobacolor and not much else. They have changed their bottle sizes also and am thinking I should/might get it now. The FOMO is real.

SOTD is another of my favorites-Chanel Exclusifs 31 Rue Cambon. I see Apsara mentioned the prices are going up again. I better hold on to this one and use sparingly. This is the only one I have anymore. Used to have Bois des Iles, Misia and Coromandel. Either used them or gave them away so now down to one. That’s okay as there are a lot of other great fragrance out there!

My husband is having back surgery next week and on top of that we are doing a ton of remodeling, so we are keeping very busy. Sometimes I wonder how we ever had time to work🤣

You are right. I should just wear it more. I have had it for 10 years and at the rate I am going with it, I think it will be around after I die. I have over 1/2 of it left and I don’t wear it often. I think I forget I have it sometimes.

I really liked it, but I have so many iris scents that I decided I didn’t need a full bottle. Like Jalapeno mentioned, it is very Chanel in nature. Many felt that it was fleeting on them, but I did not find that to be the case.

I’m in Jil Sander No. 4 today, remembering a valentine long, long ago who probably bought me the bottle I had back then. Thinking of him is a good reminder of everything I never want in a relationship (except for the perfume, I’ll take the perfume)! You live, you learn. Interestingly he gave me a “sapphire” ring back then, almost certainly glass, not real. Many years later, Mr. Ockeghem gave me real sapphire earrings. I’ve paired them today as a reminder of what’s fake and what’s real, and my real Valentine. 🙂

I have not, but it’s occurred to me. Long ago valentine was when we were in our early 20s (I was barely 20, actually), so the chances that it’s real are low. But still, he was pretty obsessed (part of the problem) and had some disposable income, so it could be real, but probably isn’t.

    So good, inspired by Kris!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/DF8h-Llxsap/?igsh=amx1ZDFwdWFzdHgx

We’re supposed to get more snow starting this evening. These days, I almost feel like if it is < 2 inches, don’t even tell me about it. It is supposed to be 2-4 inches so it just met the cut off.

Just about every Tuesday and Friday, I take a little trip to Whole Foods and then to an asian store. Last week, there was a sale on seaweed with “x” chips (potato, brown rice and something else). Anyway, since I have never had them before, I got 1 of each to do a side x side. The clear winner was the one with potato so last week, I got 8 of these. Today, I got 10. To my surprise, it was $0.49 cheaper per bag so I was quite surprised! If it is still on sale this Friday, I will get 10 more!

Four grey days in a row but it’s not very cold. Saw the lovely bird who spends winters here, I think they’re called white tails. This morning I chose Mandarina Corsica, I’m still getting acquainted with it since I purchased it last quarter. I think it’s one of my rare Quentin Bisch scents. Tonight it’s vintage Miss Dior esprit de parfum.
