It's the weekend! As of Saturday, there are 40 days of (astronomical) winter left (or, 21 days until meteorological spring), and Now Smell This is 20 years old.
We're marking the time with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the last perfume you tried in a brick & mortar store, whatever.
Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Congratulations on a superb 20 years, Robin. I am so glad I discovered this site – it’s interesting, informative, amusing, helpful, sympathetic – & everyone is so lovely. You have done sterling work, which I am sure we are all grateful for, & long may you continue to do so,
I don’t know about sterling, but I am persistent 🙂
Happy 20th birthday, NST! 🎈
Like Carolyn, I am so happy I’ve found this wonderful site and grateful to you Robin for all the great work you put into it.
Today, post run and post shower, I am sampling J’adore L’Or. It’s nice but not something I would be tempted to buy.
I guess I still haven’t found my perfect Jasmin…
I have never loved J’Adore or the flankers I tried, but never say never…
I’ve never like J’Adore either. Unfortunately, I won a large bottle when it just came out and I try it from time to time and, nope, my reaction is always the same.
Congratulations, that’s amazing. That’s been a great journey. I don’t remember exactly when I joined but it’s been a while.
I am at the cottage and forgot to bring any perfume with me, so using one of the samples I have here, Not a Perfume by Juliette has a gun. I am looking forward to the Live conferences in March organized by Le Nez, Paris perfume week. I got my pass and can watch all these talks, workshops and there are so many.
Sounds like a wonderful, educational time.
How wonderful! I think they are now selling also a pass to watch livestreams of some of the talks.
Exactly, that’s what I got, the pass for the Livestreams!
Happy Birthday, NST! Thank you for 20 years of community and companionship. I read this site for years before joining-now I wonder why did I wait. More fun when you participate.
SOTD is Goutal shower gel in Tenue de Soiree. I really like this format for this scent-something about it reminds me of something else but I can never make the connection in my head.
Three weeks till spring-it’s sunny here today and I have a lot to keep me busy. Hoping to flake out on the chesterfield tomorrow with the cat, and make some meals for the week and watch some films.
Hope you get your stay home time tomorrow, your plan sound very pleasant.
So it’s Sun night, and I did get to stick to my plan, ring thing, and had a really relaxing day 🙂
I have too much to keep me busy this weekend, and MUST make a bigger dent in the taxes. Day on sofa with cat sounds great!
I bought a new Chanel lippy the other day- after looking at your color you picked during the week I sprang for a new color for myself 🙂
Funny – I dug out the colour Nuance because you mentioned it the other day! What new colour did you buy, if it’s not too personal a question?
Not personal at all.
What do you think of nuance? I love that color.
832 Rouge Libre in Chanel Allure Extrait. It’s a refillable lipstick. Pink/red. When I tried it – I fell in love 🥰
I just googled it-I love blue reds. That’s a beautiful lipstick. I love Nuance-love that you can apply as a single swipe, like a lipgloss. Apply a few times to build up the colour for a more intense look. These colours don’t oxidize or change, they tend not to bleed, and the packaging feels special. Enjoy it, in the best of health 🙂
Tenue de Soiree is so pretty.
I agree with you, Old Herbaceous. I really like the potency of the shower gel.Not affiliated-it’s on for a very reasonable price at fragrance net.
Congrats on the 20 years. Wearing CdG Kyoto today. It will be a zoo at work today and I need some kind of zen today to cope.
wishing you a zenful day, Dawn.
Some reason for today being busy?
My son said his job will be ugly today too, everyone getting everything they need before the super bowl?
Or Valentine’s Day?
Super Bowl Sunday.
Got it! I didn’t know what kind of work you did so thought it could be Valentine’s Day too. I kind of forgot that some places would be busy for the Super Bowl😊
Happy anniversary, everyone. What a treat this page is each day.
I’m in vintage Chanel 19 eau de cologne. This bottle is not the freshest so I best splash generously and use it up.
The last thing I tried in a store was Diorella. Now I’m on the hunt for … what else… a vintage bottle of it.
Good luck!!
Ooh, No. 19, you smell great!
No 19 is beautiful.
Congratulations and thanks to you, Robin for this delightful corner of the internet. It’s been a source of comfort, laughs, kindness, and discovery all wrapped up in the most wonderful fragrance.
🙂
You captured this sentiment so well, apsara!
yep, yep 12 hours sleep.
post shower some Tobacolor. Love this one.
Congratulations on the sleep!
Love my bed. And magic pillow.
If you can spare a few hours, I’ll pay you beaucoup $$$ for them to add to my 5 hr total last night apsara!
so a sleep swap – like a fragrance swap but different!
😉 ooh love this!
I second everyone else’s appreciation of your good work, Robyn! NST is a little refuge of pleasant thoughts from the wild crazy world we live in. I am so grateful I found this place! Accidentally commando at the grocery store today, I rushed out of the house trying to beat the alleged snow, which has failed to materialize. When I get home I will probably put on Tam Dao, to at least get on the hemisphere to cook dinner, which will be a Wyoming/ Vietnamese fusion dish-Meredith’s Special Lemongrass Bison Noodles. 🙂
Gosh, wish I was coming to dinner! Bonus to be passed my plate with a whiff of Tam Dao 😉
Plenty go go around. Grilling the well marinaded meat right now- get just the right hint of char I gave up and put a tablespoon of real sugar in the marinade. It makes all the difference. That and dill pickles. I put homemade garlic dills in the salad portion. Good contrast with the sweeter dressing elements.
Sold!
LOL! Too Late, all gone! Did turn out very tasty, if I do say so myself!
Congratulations and Happy 20th NST Birthday, Robin!💐💗💐
You all make such a difference in my life everyday with your insights, wisdom, humor and perspective. I’ve learned so much from you, been enabled by you, validated by you and helped with things big and small💕
Thank you, Robin for all of the energy you put in to hold us together, especially during crazy times. It makes a significant impact😘
Wearing HG Slowdive (from a generous NSTer) and the beautiful beeswax note inspired me to put honey on my toast! Mmmm!
I forgot to ask my question: do we have a date for our next Swapmeet? My swap box is overflowing!😊
Oh, now I want to know what you have.
More than 15 things, I can tell you that!😋
Meeeee toooo
I’ll email you😊
I beat you🤣
Ha, what we have so far is that just this morning I added a note to my to do list “schedule swapmeet & splitmeet”…I will get to it soon, promise!
😊
I was bored last night so I did my taxes, and I’m glad they are out of the way. Tax planning for 2025 is a big guessing game, I have to file estimated taxes quarterly. It’s groping in the dark trying to figure out how much money to budget for taxes as my AGI varies considerably from year to year. Anyway, I am wearing EL Tuberose Gardenia to banish the gray skies. There are leaf buds on the maple tree so spring is coming!
Love your scent today!
If you get super bored feel free to do my taxes. I can’t bring myself to look yet. Lol.
Ha, pretty much what I was going to say. I have started but have not gotten all that far.
Robin I forgot to say how much NST means to me. Each day brings an opportunity to learn and share with so many like-minded, generous, kind people. Thank you for creating such a wonderful place.
Thanks foxbins!
I haven’t posted much and was rereading old threads and was so sorry to read about your fall. Hope you feeling better and recover quickly!
I had the flu on Xmas break during college and fainted in the bathroom…broke my 2 front teeth on the sink and the nerves never died so even w/ great trauma teeth can be surprisingly resilient…just like us humans. Sending you strength and hugs. 🤗
Thanks, She-ra. I am feeling better.
Echoing pretty much everyone else’s congratulations and thanks for keeping NST a place of joyful refuge for us. Twenty years!
My SOTM is Kerosene Broken Theories for warmth, sweetness and just a bit of weird. 💕
Thank you, and you smell great today!
Happy 20th anniversary! We appreciate you so much, Robin.
What allo and others said above, it’s all true. We love it here.
Speaking of allo, I’m wearing Niral today. 🙏
After a month of unexpectedly cold weather (for GA), spring is in the air with temps in the 70s, which means I’m starting to feel like wearing some of my floral perfumes.
Here’s to another 20 years of NST! ❤️
You smell wonderful! And how serendipitous! I’m wearing Dryad today and I just got a bottle of Shaal Nur after I loved the decant you gave me! 😊
ZOMG, you found Shaal Nur?!?
Congratulations on your 20 years Robin! This has been a wonderful place to be a part of and I am so thankful for all the friends I have made here. I echo Allo in that I have been enabled and validated by many of you. I have gained a whole new appreciation for scents. Thanks so much!
SOTD is Shalimar MI.
You’ve found a couple versions of Shalimar that made you a believer here…
Which is funny since I never liked Shalimar in the past. MI is still my favorite. Wonder what it will be this year.
Happy anniversary Robin and everyone who make up NST. Thank you so much Robin, for all your hard work keeping this warm, fragrant community together! Love and hugs all around.
My hand went to White Cube today and it smells so good, I might wear it again tomorrow. I have really been craving it.
Winter weather advisory for snow and ice this afternoon, just snow so far. Ice is the worst.
I hope you don’t get the ice. Miraculously I have been taken out of the advisory tonight. Heavy snow to my north and wintery mix to my south. I’m expecting a little of both but the weather people said I shouldn’t worry.
I noticed a lot of people like the white cube. I haven’t tried it, but I think I have a few scents that are similar.
White Cube is sadly discontinued but can still be found a few places online. It’s a powdery gardenia scent with woodsy base notes. Not usually my thing but I just love it, I think it was lillyjo talking about it that made me pursue a bottle.
Sounds nice.
They should have just called it White Cube. The names of that whole line are so confusing!
hear hear
Happy 20th, NST! Think I discovered this place around 2013…time sure flies.
It’s hard to gin up motivation when it’s so gloomy/dreary/chilly.
At least need to make it to the grocery store. In Heure Exquise.
Did you just say Gin? Sure could use a cocktail 🍸🍸 even with lack of sleep!
Love Heure Exquise!
Happy Birthday and Best Wishes to NST and Robin! What a lovely community you’ve fostered, Robin – many thanks. It’s a joy to be part of it.
I’ve been utterly obsessed recently with Bois des Iles – both the marvelous EdP and the celestial Parfum. Today, I’m in the “male” version – Égoïste, which has sharper citrus notes, and rougher woodsy notes than Bois des Iles, but the 1926 classic is definitely in there. (I have fond memories of the short-lived Bois Noir, but as I recall the transition to Égoïste was pretty seamless.) My bottle is a pandemic-era purchase, and it’s lighter than the original, but still wonderful.
On a related note, I read something interesting recently about Chanel No.18, and it sounded quite plausible. The writer suggested that Polge wanted to create a masculine counterpart to Bois des Iles, which led to Bois Noir, then Égoïste, and finally, after further tinkering, to No.18 – “a feminine based on a masculine, based on another masculine, based on an old feminine by a previous house perfumer, full-circle.”
Oooooooh, good to hear that the current-ish Egoiste is still worthy!
It’s still worthy! A bit thinner, but very recognizable.
Congratulations on 20 years, Robin. Excellent site and fellow commenters!
SOTD = 4160 Tuesdays Flawed Fern EDP
… from the 4160 Tuesdays January Joy Box 2025 … yes, a little late but I have a lot. Anyway, this is fresh, leaning masculine. Nice!

I have a ton of packages (big and small) waiting to be opened but no worries about my low buy. So far so good. Of course I went ahead and ordered the Volutes Rose Macaron candle trio. I really should stop reading the Daily Lemming!
I am awaiting a snow event tonight / tomorrow morning. I hope it is not too bad. It feels like we are paying for our favorable winters the past few years!
I saw the snow for your area. Hopefully you can stay in.
Got a text from another friend in NJ telling me about the impending “Yuck” in the area. Hope it ain’t too bad.
Let us know how those candles are! They’re cute in any case.
Happy Birthday NST, Robin, heartfelt thank you for maintaining this haven of perfume fellowship and many other subjects besides.
Enjoying miso soup with yam noodles, Cerruti 1881 this morning and tonight YR Rose absolue. Tackled half of the housekeeping today but will finish tomorrow, it’s too dark now.
Aurora do you think 1881 is something I might like. I saw it for a good deal.
You might if you enjoy a herbal floral, the chamomile is very present which I love but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
Good to know. I am not a fan of chamomile or herbal. Thanks!
My sisters’ cat is named Miso, we tease her endlessly with pictures of miso soup.
It’s a good name for a cat.
Yam noodles? Are those anything like zucchini noodles, aka zoodles?
No, they’re more like regular noodles. Made from the root, konjac.
Ah! I’ve heard of konjac WRT to Japanese food.
Yay, 20 years! I remember this was the first perfume blog I discovered. Maybe the 1st perfume blog ever?
I am sure at some point I knew what was the first perfume blog, but honestly I no longer remember. I am pretty sure there wasn’t anybody blogging “regularly” about perfume when I started, but for some reason I don’t think I was the first. Within a couple years, there were tons.
Wow Robin, amazing. Happy 20th NST! Thanks to Robin and the community for being an amazing resource and community for so long. What a beautiful thing we get to share. Thank you thank you!
Thinking of wearing Angel today, need to eat something first and see what I feel like after that.
Thank you, and thank you for joining in!
Yay for 20 years of NST!!! 🥳🎈Thank you, Robin, for fostering a kind and generous community. I think I stumbled upon NST in 2006 or 2007 but didn’t comment until much later…I was a late bloomer. 😉 🌼
Revisiting a sample of D’ORSAY Flower Lust and notes are below. Not my favorite…I get tuberose which isn’t listed and I generally like tuberose but I think it’s just too much pepper. Generally I love Ropion’s work but this comes off kind of synthetic bordering on…dare I say it?…poser niche… 🫢
Top notes are Pink Pepper and Black Pepper; middle notes are Ylang Ylang and Orange Blossom; base notes are Tonka Bean, Benzoin, Sandalwood, Patchouli and Vetiver.
(snicker) Poser niche!
It ought to be a formal fragrance family, it’s common enough 🙂
Now I want to sample it. I need a reference for “poser niche” 😂
Happy 20 years!!
This blog is amazing…the community-everything! I love all the talk about perfumes, books, soaps, food, workout videos..daily rants about life and family…the list goes on and on. Thank you Robin and everyone
Still on my Chanel week..1932 for the market and Sycamore for dinner tonight. With a Chanel lippy
* SYCOMORE
I would love to see your lipstick collection. Do you organize them?
If you mean by brand yes.
Congratulations on 20 years, Robin – that’s a fantastic achievement, a huge thanks to you and everyone who makes NST such a treasure!
Like a few others, I read NST long before I made any comments, and I think I first discovered NST back around 2009.
By coincidence, I’m wearing a perfume that I bought around the same time, in 2008. It’s Alien Eau Luminescente, with a mandarin note, in a bright orange bottle.
That is a great Alien flanker.

Happy anniversary Robin. Thanks for bringing perfume culture to the far corners of the world! I thought it would interesting to look at one of your 2005 posts and saw this one, which led me to wear Daim Blond today. It’s perfect given that my house is enclosed in mist, with rain falling. Just gave my dog’s paws a sniff ( for research) and they smell of wet soil, which makes sense as she’s been skulking in the vegetable garden and had just traipsed mud over the carpet.
Thanks for sharing the link. I still use Kai. Did not know it was 20 years old. It seems like I have owned it off and on for a while, but not that long!
Interesting link, Kanuka, thanks for posting. And interesting to see what has stood the test of time and what has dropped off. I recall when Suzanne Lang was popular but I have not heard that name in years while Kai is still quite popular, my sisters in law love it, that’s how I learned about it. And oh to go back in time and snap up a case of SL Daim Blond in those Palais Royale bottles. I kick myself for swapping mine away many years ago, back when I was in a frenzy to try everything new and never look back. I haven’t smelled it in ages but I do recall the blog Black Narcissus complaining it had been reformulated, and that was already some time ago. Seems like it would be fabulous winter scent too, with its soft suede, osmanthus, and apricot wrapping you like a warm cashmere shawl.
I still have half a bottle of Suzanne Lang Pashmina tucked away. Loved her fragrances.
IIRC, Scent Bar (aka Luckyscent) used to stock the brand.
Happy 2Oth Anniversary Robin! Although I’ve probably been here a little more than 20 days, I must say ditto to all the moving comments congratulating you on building such a kind, lovely and nurturing corner of the net! Everyone has been so welcoming to me, absolutely charming me out of any shyness at joining your community. Already the generous Kris sent me some heavenly Iris Poudre and Encens Mythique. And when I posted about going natural for my annual physical, I got good wishes for good results! (Which clearly worked, but so far all tests are normal!).
Sotd Valley of Flowers (so I’m rose-adjacent for the CP)
Here’s to another 20 heavenly fragrant years Robin!
Glad the tests are coming back normal!
So far so good lillyjo! 🙏🙏🙏
Robin, happy, happy birthday to your baby! The one, the only, NST! I hope you’re feeling the love from all the posters here today and just how much we appreciate you! Hugs and best wishes for 20 more!
Balloons were late today and I just caught a glimpse of a few as I went to bed through the skylight. Very pretty!
CSP Vanille Apricot today, the OG that (I think) made this brand so popular way back when. I just looked it up and it was launched in 1993, so 30+ years later, this is still a favorite with gourmand lovers. Not a bad track record. 😊
Happy Saturday! 🌞
Thanks Deva, and how cool to see the balloons through the skylight!
Happy 20th anniversary, Now Smell This! What a great online community this is, I’m so grateful that I can take part.
🙂
Congratulations, Robin, on 20 wonderful years of NST, and thank you so very, very much for this wonderful place and community you have gathered. 🙏👏❤️
Enjoyed last night’s folkfest, stayed overnight in the city, and luckily got home this morning before the predicted ‘Wintry mix’ and snow began to fall. Tucked in now for the night with pizza and 🍷 and will be streaming the second night of the folkfest shortly. Wearing Dame’s Chocolate 🍫 + Roses 💐, yum.
Glad your home safe Laila.
Happy to hear that you and Mr. Laila are home safe with the kitties now.
Perfect timing!
Beaucoup bouquets (fragrant ones!) on 20 years of NST! You handle it with grace, tact, and intelligence and we are all so grateful you’re here!
Thanks scaresbears.
Happy 20th anniversary/ Birthday Robin and NST! I think I joined during the 10th anniversary. I’m so grateful to have found this community!
The weather people lied and it’s snowing like crazy here. Always when I have to work the late shift.
I am wearing Gabrielle L’Eau from the purse stash. It’s so perfect for eventual Spring. It makes me feel happy.
We got a few inches of snow today. They are saying more for Monday.
I finally did smell Gabrielle L’Eau a few weeks ago. There was some note in there that I did not care for, which seemed crazy as I love Gabrielle and Gabrielle Essence. It must be the green notes or the berries that are in L’Eau. Glad it’s perfect for you.
It’s the total opposite for me. The first 2 have something that causes me to get a headache even though I enjoy the smell.
Good we all have different tastes with so many different fragrances out there.
Send me your snow! Please!!
Gladly!
Happy 20th Blogoversary Robin! 🎆✨🎉🎊
I discovered NST when my interest in perfume blossomed into full-on mania back in 2009. Took me a while to delurk, though.
I’ve learned loads about perfume, of course, but have also found a well educated and supportive community that talks about much more than lovely scented things. There have been moments of pathos and laugh out loud humor. You all have been here for the ups and down in my life, and that means so very much.
Thank you.
SOTD = back in the OG Flowerbomb. I think it likes temps in the 30’s and 40’s more than I do. 🤣
Don’t forget about the great music we have shared here!🤘
Just checked: No 1 song in US 20 yrs ago was Mario, Let Me Love You!
Well gracious, I think by then I was listening to a local public alternative music radio station, and probably listening to CDs in my car? Or something. I don’t know, but never heard that song…just watched the video. Betcha whatever is No 1 this week, I’ve never heard that either, LOL…
I wasn’t familiar either Robin. Current #1 Billboard Pop 100 is Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars “Die w a Smile.” Don’t know that one either personally.
Yep, never heard it. Did not even know she was still a thing.
Definitely!
20 years ago, I was listening to 2 radio stations out of Philly. One was Y-100, which was the local alternative station. Sadly, they changed format a few years later. The other was the local classical station. A strange combination.
My current terrestrial radio station here in Colorado reminds me of WXPN. Got spoiled listening to that from 2014-ish to 2023.
You know you can still listen to XPN! I listen to radio via streaming apps, mostly XPN plus the Austin, TX station KUTX, which is similar. What is your good radio station there, I will see if they have an app and I can try it!
I still have the XPN app on my laptop. 😊 I like being able to turn on my boombox and have noises I enjoy come out of it, though.
The station I listen to now does have an app. It’s at coloradosound.org.
Thanks, listening to it now!
Smellin’ good!
Thank you!
Happy 20th NST!!!
Thank you so so much Robin for creating this amazing space where I can meet all these amazingly wonderful and kind people who share the same passion for perfume as I do. I don’t remember when I discovered NST but I know it’s been very long! A LOT in my life had happened during all these years. There were ups and certainly some downs, but having NST as a joyful constant made sad days happier and happier days greater. Logging in everyday and just reading about everyone’s sotd, life updates and participating in CPs is something I look forward to everyday and I am grateful for that.
Sotd is Soleil Neige. Sunshine on fresh, glistening snow. Great winter scent!
Well I happen to have the user database open at the moment for other reasons…you registered on February 20, 2012 🙂
Chapeau to Robin for keeping this site humming along and keep us all smelling good for two decades. You have built and steered the good ship NST faithfully and we all appreciate it and the kind warm smart people who have been drawn to it over the years.
I love “the good ship NST”🚢 We should christen it with a factice of Robin’s favorite fragrance. Diorissimo, perhaps???
For a minute I was horrified…but I guess a factice so long as it is newly made. Even “real” factices must be rare now! (Or am I crazy, do they still make them? Haven’t seen one for any new scent in eons)
Diorisssimo 💗💗💗 especially in the original black and white houndstooth packaging!
Happy 20th Anniversary NST and Robin! I am always grateful for this fantastic, supporting community! Wishing many more wonderful years to come!
Thanks for all the messages you left a couple of months ago regarding my health. With a positive attitude and with God’s help I hope to be fully recovered soon.
Wearing Masque Milano L’Attesa.
Have a great and healthy rest of the weekend, everyone!
👋 Waving at you! So glad you are back pl67. Everyone has been missing you.

Thank you, Annie!🌻
Always shining.💗
Just adding to all the others’ good wishes and sending good vibes across the universe for your full recovery and return to us!🤗
Thank you Laila! 🌹
Our winter advisory petered out, maybe an inch of new snow, blending seamlessly into the old snow and ice. AH is off to a Sunday Service. My tricky hip convinced me to stay home, so I am stoking the fire, eating a variety of less suitable foods coffee (with a chocolate mini dissolved it it, and a splash of Kahlua, with lots of half and half-sorta channeling my inner Dude goes to a mountain cabin thing…), a gluten free everything bagel from O’Doughs, which are the best everything bagels, gluten free or otherwise, that I have found- (basically potato bread with sorghum and buckwheat flour-yummy!) with orange marmalade, and pickled herring. Later I will eat an organic Fuji apple for roughage, and a nod to clean eating! LOL! SOTD this morning Mon Precieux Nectar-pretty, pretty, pretty. I ordered a bunch of linen samples on sale this morning. Since I have lost some weight, all the sturdy LL Bean linen pants I have worn the last few years in the summer are all way too big, and it looks like they have succumbed to the “let’s put some spandex in there so they won’t last as long, and make people all sweaty and call it an upgrade” theory of summer dressing, so I just and going to make some for myself!
Breakfast of Champions!!
That’s kind of a good problem to have, you have sized down from your pants…
A year of feeling very hungry! 🙂
Linen + spandex = does not compute!
Yes, I can’t imagine who would buy “linen with added stretch”! It’s just weird.
“A freebie for the 20th Anniversary” (US only)
A new, unopened JD Parfums Jeffrey Dame Petit Coffret au Tresor. It has 4 assorted samples, a perfumed body wear cream, and a 5 in 1 facial cream.
My email monica67 in the land of aol. Please include you NST nickname.
It so good to see you! We (pretty sure I’m speaking for everyone here) miss your regular posts and hope you are doing better. Please take care, pl67!
Welp, prompted by somehere here posting about V&R Flowerbomb a few days ago, so this morning I reached for my old bottle, which only has a titch left and which I haven’t worn in years, only to find that it’s Spicebomb and not Flowerbomb at all.
This is a vintage bottle and perhaps all the ingredients have macerated together, but it smells a bit niche to me from this distance, as though they might have been trying to do a Lutens lite. There is a strong clove note that threatens to slay any competitors, maybe some bay rum (?) like those old gentlemen’s scents, plus cinnamon and more. I’m not that good at teasing out notes. What it lacks vis a vis Lutens is the thick sweet honeyed drip. Though it is somewhat sweet, it’s more ‘dry’ if that makes sense. Interesting to revisit after so long. It’s from 2012.
Update: The clove calmed the heck down pretty quickly and then it was indeed, an extravaganza bomb of spice. Nice, but my Lutens bottles fill that niche, methinks
That’s sort of funny that it turns out to be Spicebomb!
Happy 20th to NST, and Robin, thanks and congratulations! So glad I opened the thread — I’ve been in the whirlwind of my new job (same employer, significantly different role), plus dealing with the passing of Mr. Skal’s father in January. He was 100, still vibrant, and we miss him.
I’m in Borneo 1834 today. I have some perfume-sensitive colleagues in my new role (but there is no fragrance ban) so I’ve been using a very light hand and avoiding the more challenging options in my collection. I asked them directly to please tell me if I ever wore anything that bothered them, but I am also the boss, so I am trying to respect the hesitancy to speak up that this power differential may cause.
We got about 8” of snow last night, lovely fluffy powder, and Mr. Skal and I walked home around 10 from a neighbor’s house as it was coming down. One of those quiet, beautiful, snowy nighttime walks. Until I fell while walking around a badly parked car (it caused me to misjudge the curb) and banged my knee. Although it hurt A LOT at the time, I iced it immediately and it’s way better today than I expected.
As residents of W New York, we are skipping the big game today. (Go, Eagles!)
Ouch! Sorry about your fall, but I did want to say I love those quiet nighttime snowfall walks. There must be some interesting physics about how the falling snow muffles sound waves.
So glad you did not hurt yourself any more than that!
Hope you and Mr Skal are doing ok…it is so hard to lose a parent.
My condolences to you and Mr. Skal on the passing of his father. It’s a seismic shift.
Hope your knee is feeling better now.
Finished vacuuming the house and putting the house back in order. My dad rediscovered the bread machine and is starting to make bread again. Last night, he made French bread and there were crumbs everywhere. About to get into the shower and switch to either the original Coco or go with Number One Intense today. My mother wants to start up on the crock pot pulled pork.
Getting ready for the Super Bowl?
Yep.
SOTD is Encens Mythique. Love this stuff.
Busy cleaning today before the Super Bowl. Just having tacos tonight, but we love them.
House twins in Champs Elysees and you smell wonderful. Taco twins too, for lunch here – with some fabulous guacamole from our local Mexican grocery store. For the occasion, I even used fancy little bowls for each topping: tomatoes, onions, lettuce and cheese. 🌮🥗
Guacamole yum!!! Not doing fancy bowls here. Just two of us.
Enjoy your tacos and the game!
Thanks Tulipani!
Now that I know Encens Mythique Kris, I can say with absolute certainly that you smell absolutely wonderful! Hope your enjoyed your tacos!
My team isn’t in the Super Bowl so it is Puppy Bowl Sunday here. I’m wearing Carner Barcelona D600 today.
My team isn’t either though I love football so will still watch.
Happy 20th Anniversary, NST! What a wonderful accomplishment, Robin! I’ll celebrate with a happy “think Spring” scent: Champs Elysees extrait. I love all versions of it, with the edt as my favorite. Next is the extrait, which seems to have more creamy woods than the edt or edp – I even smell a hint of aldehydes. It almost becomes a White Linen-type power scent, but then turns sweeter and more diffuse.
It’s always interesting to see the variation between concentrations of the classic Guerlains. I’ve only done the Samsara “ladder”.
I am copying Dawn and wearing CdG Kyoto, it makes me feel so cozy on this cold Sunday we are having…
Love Kyoto 🙂
Sotd Desertland. Craving juniper and lavender scents so am now basking in them.
20 yrs #1 song in US was Marion’s Let Me Love You. The word “perfume” is in the lyrics.
Mario’s, not Marion’s
I had to look up the song because I don’t know it. I’m only good with knowing stuff from 2000 or before. Lol.
Lillyjo I didn’t know it either. If it weren’t for Apple Music lyrics, I wouldn’t have known about the perfume line.
SOTD = 4160 Tuesdays Choose the Bear EDP
I love this one! Green and forest walk at the same time! 💚🤎. I am behind in my January Joy Box 2025 sampling but I will be caught up soon!

I decided to be frisky yesterday and posted my earrings in case you want to see them )some already did 😇).

We had snow last night but it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Our snow removal service though was not great today. How could you just clear out where the garbage bins are without removing the snow on the way in to where the bins are? The garbage people are supposed to haul out garbage bags and what not and leap over the uncleared section? SMH 🤦🏻♀️ 💩
Beautiful earrings! I also really like the backings.
So pretty, the earrings! One day, I will get my statement piece of jewelry but I am *still thinking* about what the gem will be. You make a good case for emeralds! Regarding snow removal, we have to hack through the plow ridge plus however many inches to clear a space in front of our mailbox or else the postal person just drives by. This is many shovels-full of sometimes packed and icy glop.
Glad that your snow was NBD. But shoddy snow removal is such a PITA!
Night four, as in four long, long shifts in a row. Wearing MVP. Lots of it. Hoping it has some type of narcotic effect on everyone around me and people just calm tf down.
Not a football fan but will fully endorse whatever team you want me to, no extra charge. 😜 Possibly, the game is already over..?
Sadly, this has been a rather poor balloon weekend. The few I did see were quite far away. I did see one ascending at a very rapid pace, to the point I was concerned something might be wrong. This one was close enough that I could hear the WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH as the flames shot up. My days of living dangerously are over, and thankfully I survived them. No chance I’ll be getting into a hot air balloon any time soon…
Working tonight twins! I got scheduled 6 shifts in a row but not all nights. Do you ever do morning shifts?
No, strictly 7pm to 7am for a variety of reasons. Life is work, sleep, eat, work, sleep, eat…April 5th is taking too long to get here!
Have a good night, twin! I hope your shift goes quickly and without a multitude of large and small annoyances! As an aside, I worked with a gal last night who was a pharmacist for 20 years and decided to go to nursing school. This is her first nursing job. “It’s not like they told is in school.” Nope, honey, it sure isn’t! The grass is always greener, I guess, but I feel bad for her.

Up up and awayyyyy….check out the outfits!
Working tonight and hoping the game keeps people away. Lol.
I’m wishing for summer now by wearing BBW Caramel coconut body spray. I’m drinking the new blackberry Dr. Pepper and giving it a thumbs up👍
The “people” will end up here, in the ER…intoxicated, belligerent, hopefully surviving MVA’s, falls, fights, and various other incidents. They’ll start off by asking (if they’re not obtunded) for a turkey sandwich with a side of dilaudid as soon as you bring them into the department from triage…🙃
Ugh.. I hope none of that happens.
Hope you had an extraordinarily slow and uneventful shift, Deva!
Blackberry Dr Pepper? Awakes from Super Bowl coma. I’ve got to locate some of this!
It’s not in the normal section. They have it outposted by the checkouts. It’s delicious.
Ill be on the lookout!
Hope that your shift was boring and uneventful, lillyjo!
Hope your shift went well!
Hope you had a blissfully slow and uneventful shift! That blackberry Dr. Pepper sounds yummy!
Happy belated birthday, NST! Thank you, Robin, for building this community, and thank you to all NSTers for being here.
I am doing St. Valentine’s week. This holiday has no personal significance for me, but I like the theme, and there are often some fun limited-edition products, like soaps, shower gels, etc.
Today I am wearing Jean Patou 1000 because of this review by Angela – https://freebox.it.com/2011/06/27/jean-patou-1000-fragrance-review/%3C/a%3E (scroll down to “In Susan Irvine’s book”). Modern 1000 smells very clean to me, so I doubt it would have a spicy commercial today.
Angela’s review reads like a riveting short story! Thanks for the link Glannys!
It does! In case you did not know, she is a mystery writer, Angela M. Sanders.
I did not know. I’m a newbie (New Years resolution to stop lurking- fulfilled) and enjoying the community a great deal! Also a NYR to wear fragrance everyday, so far so good!
Vintage Jean Patou 1000 was an amazing green perfume. The modern version really doesn’t resemble its ancestor at all.
Still wearing Chanel..
1932 for the library today, and the lipstick I mention above to Carole
I cute sweater with hearts for Valentines Day week…
Nice! Hope the library was good today.
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2025/feb/10/tom-robbins-quotes
I just read that Tom Robbin’s has died. It surprised me because I thought he had died ages ago. I can remember reading all his books back in the early 80s and not really ‘ getting’ them because, I think, the American counter-counter thing seemed so specific to America that it didn’t quite compute ( plus I was young). Anyway, it was interesting to read these quotes and realise how sensible they seem. Wearing Ganja for another chilly day. Yesterday we had a high of 14C ( about 60F) which is not very inspiring for the hottest month of the year.
I have never heard of him…Great quotes though.
I finished my romantasy book, which I felt like I had to force myself to read. I am thinking of giving Cher’s memoir a pause and reading Prophet Song. Have you heard of this book? I think it was shortlisted for the booker prize.
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/sep/03/prophet-song-by-paul-lynch-review-a-tale-of-dublins-descent-into-dystopia-is-crucial-reading?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
I haven’t read Prophet Song but all the reviews are excellent. I have recently read Australian author Tim Winton’s Juice which is a dystopian epic with a strong environmental heart. Set in Western Australia.
One of Tom Robbins’ books you might like is Jitterbug Perfume.
https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/tom-robbins/jitterbug-perfume/
Thank you
Sorry to hear that. His STILL LIFE W WOODPECKER was a favorite novel for the longest time. I was invited to a potluck dinner in the ‘80s where you had to bring a food mentioned in literature and display the excerpt next to the food. I chose this quote that from that book: “Since Hostess Twinkies always traveled in pairs—because like the coyote, the killer whale, the gorilla, and the whooping crane, Hostess Twinkies mate for life—there would have been a Twinkie each for you to share.” I came in 2nd when we voted, of course that could be because who brings Hostess Twinkies to a potluck 😆
I thought the same…had no idea he was still alive.
I LOVED his early books but when I tried to reread one recently I was mystified. It must have been something only my younger self “got”. Same with early Tom Wolfe … just can’t get into the right mindset.
Good morning! I’m popping by to say that I’m wearing Mito EdP from Vero Profumo, one of my treasures.
Nice! Hope it was a good day Gaynor.
Sotd Desertland (again). I’m really craving g Lavender. Mr Engineer thinks it’s because of my stress. Even my Oura ring has been telling me my heart rate is in the stresses zone waaay too much recently.
Three Questions for NSTers:
1) what’s the difference between a sample and a decant
2) a split meet and swap meet?
3) anyone recommend a lavender-prominent scent for me as an olfactory aid for calming ?
Thank you!!!
Sorry you are stressed. 😢I hope some calmer times come soon to you.
Sample vs. Decant
Sample: A small (1-2 ml) amount of perfume, usually provided by the brand to let you try a scent before committing to a full bottle. It typically comes in the brand’s official packaging, such as a vial attached to a card or a tiny branded box.
Decant: Typically, a larger amount of perfume that has been transferred (decanted) from a full bottle into a smaller container. Decants are not official—they are made by perfumistas or sellers. Unlike samples, decants usually come in plain packaging with a simple (possibly handwritten) label.
Possible reasons for getting a decant:
1) You want to test a fragrance over time before committing to a full bottle (kind of like a bigger sample).
2) The perfume is only sold in large bottles (e.g., 100ml), but you only need a smaller amount.
3) You need a travel-friendly size of a perfume you already own.
4) You can save money by buying a decant per ml instead of purchasing an entire bottle.
Technically, if someone makes a 1-2 ml decant, it can be considered both a decant and a sample. However, since it’s manually decanted and not an official brand sample, it’s usually referred to as a decant rather than a sample.
Glannys, first, well WOW WOW WOW! You’re generous to take the time to give such excellent, detailed answers! Second, there’s reason #5- someone wants to make you feel welcomed to the community. I expressed interest in Iris Poudre, and Kris sent me, a newbie, some with an additional decant of a favorite of hers Encens Mythique. I was blown away by her thoughtfulness and generosity!
Split Meet: This is one way to get a decant. Essentially, it involves buying a bottle of perfume with others and dividing it into decants. For example, if I want 20 ml of a perfume that only comes in 50 ml bottles, I find two people who want 15 ml each. I order the bottle, and when it arrives, I decant two 15 ml portions and ship them to the split participants. They pay for the amount of perfume they ordered, as well as the cost of containers and shipping. I keep the original bottle with the remaining perfume (slightly less than 20 ml, since some is lost during decanting). Robin has a post on NST splits with more details.
Swap Meet: Do you have a perfume you no longer want? You can try to swap it for something else with another person. There’s a post with NST swap rules somewhere, but the basic idea is simple: you send someone Perfume X, and they send you Perfume Y.
Thank you for the clear descriptions. I’m clearly on the differences now.
My favorite anti-stress lavenders are Penhaligon’s Lavandula (lavender field) and Eau Parfumée au Thé Bleu by Bvlgari (lavender tea).
Unfortunately, I think they are both discontinued.
Maybe someone will suggest something that is still in production. Jicky? Mon Guerlain? Chanel Boy?
Oh! I forgot Hermessence Brin de Reglisse. If you don’t mind licorice, it is super relaxing.
Not a licorice fan (scent or candy). What do you think of Guerlain Jicky or Le Labo Lavande 31 ?
Can’t say anything about Le Labo. Never tried that one.
As for Jicky, I think it was too animalic for me – I am more into light, clean floral lavender. However, it is a classic and a lot of people find it very comforting, so it is definitely worth a sniff.
Once more more with fragrant feelings, thank you Glannys for sharing your knowledge with me!
If you are able to go to a Lush store, they have a body spray that is called Sleepy. I’m not as big a fan as I am of the Sleepy lotion, massage bar and shower gel. The body spray is slightly different and used to be under another name.
I would send you some, but it won’t arrive quickly. I’m not well, right now.
There’s a LUSH nearby. I will definitely get some as Sleepy will help with nighttime. Thank you AnniePerfumes, and please feel better soon! I still would like to find a perfume or EDT with a prominent note if you or someone else has a moment of inspiration.
Glannys have given great descriptions of everything you asked about.
I sent you decants since I transferred from bottles I had. I probably did call them samples though.
Sometimes when I do swaps with someone the person (or me) may send samples along with the package they may have gotten from a manufacturer when they bought a perfume from them. For example, when I ordered Shalimar-Jasmine, Guerlain sent a few samples of some of their other scents. If I did not want them I would put them in the package when I was doing a swap.
The swap and split meets will make more sense to you when they come up. There is usually a couple of each every year and Robin schedules them.
I will probably watch and learn at first! But that’s valuable info Kris- thanks!
The only lavender-heavy perfume I have is the Mon Guerlain EdT, which is unfortunately discontinued. The EdP has some lavender, but it is not as prominent as the EdT was.
Think I’m going to try some Le Labo Lavande 31 and Guerlain Jicky. Unless someone knows about them that I should avoid them?
Jicky is lovely! Definitely try it. I don’t have a ton of lavender-forward scents in my collection, so this rec isn’t based on tons of experience: Histoires de Parfum 1725. It does have anise as a listed note, though I’ve never smelled it as “licorice”.
Another belated Happy Birthday wish to NST, Robin! Thank you for all your hard work and commitment. I’m so thankful for finding this group.
I’m wearing a few drops of Lush Smugglers Soul oil.
Gail, you smell so good. The real sandalwood.
Thank you, AnniePerfumes! It’s a good one; glad you love it as well.
Had to wish my sister a happy birthday today. Still wearing Number One Intense for day 2.
Monday – wearing Cashmere Mist because adorable hubby finds it soothing. I find it tediously the same for all its hours, but not especially annoying so that is something.. Cold snap continues here, so I am excavating fossilized piles of random stuff from corners, in between bits of knitting, tending the fire, and, shortly, napping. Later we will have chicken schwarma slices on salad for dinner, which is always tasty!
My sister just had a biopsy of an ugly little bump on her nose. She is blonde and spent her teenage years being the 5’11” goddess lifeguard at the local pool that all the boys lined up and drove by, circling around to look at, to the point that the local cop told them to either buy a ticket to swim or go do something that would impress her, like get a job. It being a very small town and all, the local cop, once a football star, and at the time, big brother to the quarterback, felt he had that prerogative. So anyway, if the biopsy requires further divots in my sister’s nose, she’ll have the chance for a little “work on her face!” Everyone from my neck of the woods with Irish or Scandinavian ancestry has a close personal relationship with a dermatologist, as the thin mountain air provides no protection from the UV, and if you are of a certain age, you spent the 60’s slathering baby oil on your skin, and now that abuse is coming back to bite you, in the form of scaley spots and suspicious bumps which all need to be removed when very small, before they grow and burrow into your bones and cause real problems.
I hope the blemish turns out to be NBD but hey, you found the best “get out of jail free” card!
Yes, it might just be a little scar tissue or something. 🙂
Ah yes the ubiquitous baby oil! Guilty as charged. Hearing baby oil used to make me think of the pool, but now I think of Diddy when I hear that term.
Another thing that might have seemed like a good idea at the time, but live and learn. I now apply SPF 60 every morning!
Me too! Laroche-Posay SPF 60 every day!
That is what I use! Best sunscreen ever!LOL!
I remember some of my older cousins doing the baby oil thing when I was a kid.
Guilty and I am Scandinavian, blonde/gray and burn easily. I lived in baby oil back in the day.
We were living at 7000 feet altitude, but one une understood the dangers. Well, my grands insisted it was a bad idea, but she was just an old fuddy duddy! 🙂
My spell check is insane. Mo one understood the danger. But my grandma!
One of my high-school friends (also blonde) used baby oil, augmented with a bit of iodine back in the day. She eventually became a nurse. I remember using her concoction a few times on myself!
Happy Belated 20th NST! Thank you, Robin.
I had a different username earlier that escapes me, but I’ve been along for the ride probably the 20 years. I hunted around anything perfume, forums, as other blogs appeared and most have gone.
Yet, I’ve abandoned them all except for here.
An exciting way for me to celebrate will be trotting out my gems from 2005 and wearing them a bit more often.
Just thank you. And everyone here. This isn’t a Floral Fragrance Family, but it is a Loving Fragrance Family.
I am so gross right now that a spicy dose of Euphoria put lipstick on that pig. Lol.
Euphoria is great stuff! It might be one of the few perfumes that I regret getting the 30mL bottle of. Shoulda grabbed the 50mL when it first came out.
It has been snowing all day so needed a comfort scent. I went with Indochine.
I may wear this tomorrow! You smell really nice!
Thanks my friend!
You have the snow? Big storm?
No, just 4-5 inches.
Hope it isn’t the wet stuff.
Fluffy. Our weather man calls it “moisture starved” snow. I guess that means it isn’t the heavy stuff.🤷♀️
Good! Fluffy snow is a lot easier to remove than the “snowment”. Stay warm!
SOTD = 4160 Tuesdays (S)Layer EDP
Your skin, but better! 🤍. I need to layer it with … something …

I thought I was being smart when I decided to cover my windshield with one of those windshield covers. Anyway, I cleared my steps yesterday but decided to leave my car to today. BIG MISTAKE! The snow was FROZEN and it took me 30 minutes to free my car! Of course, last night I dreamt about inventing a front steps cover to avoid having to shovel out and I may have an idea on how to make it customizable. Who knows – maybe one day you’ll see a hajusuuri line of (im)practical products!!!
🤣
Well, I was just about to get one of those and you saved me.
You are an enambler, I’d buy your line of everything.
I have a big honking ice scraper for those situations. Now, if you could invent something to get rid of heavy wet snow off a car’s roof… ❄️❄️❄️
I dreamed last night that I wanted to wear TF Lost Cherry so that is my SOTD. It was a very odd dream.
That’s cool though!
Happy 20th! As so many here have said before me, I treasure this as a place to engage with other people without all the noise. I’ve been here, if lurking early on, for most of the 20 years…I think I joined in 2008.
Today I’m in Eau de Commando again, because I had to leave the house at 6:45 a.m. to get to the kid to her early off-timetable class before we both had dentist appointments (near her school). And I haven’t gotten to the perfume drawer because as soon as I got home I had to let in the cooktop installer and get on a townhall meeting I was late for.
Friday I wore L’Heure Bleue for the CP. I hadn’t worn it for a long time, and forgot that it has serious longevity — I was still smelling it Saturday morning. Not a bad thing at all!
So, yes, I hate February. Last week I was putting away my mortar and pestle, which live(d) above the cooktop, and the granite pestle fell and bashed in the glass on my induction cooktop. Very expensive lesson learned. Fortunately a) the cooktop still worked, even cracked, which was fortunate as we had a Super Bowl party yesterday and I needed to cook, b) the appliance store had one in stock, and c) the installer could come this morning. And the mortar and pestle now live in a low drawer.
Anyway, to add to the February list of woe, yesterday while dashing upstairs to make myself presentable when a guest arrived early, I bashed my foot against the stairs and I think a toe is broken. And my face currently feels like it’s been punched, as the anesthetic from the dentist has worn off. It can only go up from here!
Ooooooooooof. I know that feeling of “I think a toe is broken”. Not good! Hopefully that isn’t the case.
I’ll probably never know for sure. Said toe is deeply purple (almost black) and quite swollen, along with the toe next to it (swollen, not black). They’re taped together now. When I broke my pinky (on a cardboard scratch lounge, sigh, ex-cat, ex-condo), I went in to emergency and they x-rayed and validated it was broken, but all they could tell me to do was tape it to the next toe. And interestingly it was the only time in my entire life I had to give an answer to the X-ray questions that I could be pregnant (and I WAS, but didn’t know it yet). Anyway, now I know just to tape it up and find shoes with a large toe box…no point in going in.
Hurts, though.
That is quite a list of woe, so sorry!! Here’s to a peaceful end to the month…
February is almost halfway over, if that helps!
Hope your expensive lesson is on sale and you recover quick.
Well, we got a bit of a discount off the MSRP, but still expensive. 🙂
Watching a cold front slide into the area this afternoon. The wind has picked up and temps are falling. Expected high tomorrow is 20 degrees F. Wednesday is even worse, with the predicted high of 15-ish. Teflon kitty is gonna hate that. 🥶🥶🥶
Watched the Super Bowl yesterday. Was in a text chat with some friends during the game; we were ranking the commercials. HATED the ones with detached body parts flying around. The one with the tongue was especially gross. Ick! Always happy to see the Budweiser Clydesdales. And I thought the Mountain Dew/Seal ad was hilarious. Oh yeah… the team I was rooting for won. 🦅🦅
SOTD = back in the OG Flowerbomb today. Yesterday I pulled out one of the La Vie en Rose flankers. Definitely can smell flowers in those! But needed something cozy for a chilly Monday with Winter Weather Advisories.
Wow, we never get to see the commercials up here, with a few exceptions. Sounds like lots of body parts. All I can say is there were fewer trucking commercials this year and plenty of financial services commercials (it’s retirement contribution season, as we have until the beginning of March to contribute if we want a tax refund).
I saw a couple of them on YouTube before the game. IDK if that would work for you?
There were a LOT of ads for local attorneys sprinkled in. I figured that was from the TV station I was watching, and not the network.
YouTube works, but only after the fact, as you have to know which commercials to look up. We’ve done that in the past, but really no one at the party except me cares about the commercials, so we gave it up. 🙂
I’m going to look up the commercials later tonight.
AVOID the Coffeemate one with the tongues!!!
