Wednesday scent of the day 2/5

Posted by Robin on 5 February 2025 153 Comments

Happy Hump Day and happy World Nutella Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in vintage Hermès Calèche.

Reminder: 2/7 is Rose Day, but we've already done rose for a Friday project at least twice, so we'll put a spin on it this time...wear your favorite fragrance that has a rose note but doesn't smell primarily of rose, or wear a rose fragrance layered with something that tones down the rose.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Rose, Rosa x cantabligiensis, バラ, ロサ カンタブリジエンシス, [cropped] by T.Kiya at flickr; some rights reserved.

Caleche is an excellent choice for this CP!

I’m wearing Guerlain Liu today (apparently overrated, according to Luca Turin 😉).

In floral aldehydic fragrances, the floral notes seem to break down and transform into something else – I still perceive this scent as floral, but I can’t distinguish individual notes, including rose. Still, it’s lovely. It has many similarities to Chanel No. 22, which I might also wear this week, but Liu feels warmer and more intimate, though less modern.

I went back to Eau Capitale yesterday after you mentioned the pronounced rose note for you and I am struck by the way the pepper and patchouli throw me off the rose. Patchouli is also dominant for me in POAL, at least compared to rose forward fragrances like Perris Monte Carlo Rose de Mai or Sa Majeste La Rose. This is such an interesting CP!

It’s not a rose soliflore for sure, and I agree that patchouli is strong here.
I’ve just sprayed a little of Eau Capitale on myself. Rose… Patchouli takes over… Rose again… Now mostly rose, but it’s faded, musky, less fresh. No pepper for me, and I think bergamot amplifies the freshness of rose in the opening.
So, yes, I am getting more rose than you are, and it just shows how important testing is.

I am doing a week of Chanel.
Before reading Glanny’s post above I already sprayed Chanel No. 22. I am wearing a spray of the EdT from a decant that has a few sprays left 🙁 and a few drops of the glorious parfum behind each ear. Clean face and a Chanel lippy for volunteering later today at the library.

Front and center on the business section of the WSJ was the layoff of 7K employees at Estee Lauder. Things have been really shaken up in the beauty industry these days.

I am disappointed so far in this Onyx Storm book I have been reading. As soon as I am done I will go back to Cher’s memoir

Beige was my wedding perfume but No 22 a close contender.

I feel very elegant when I wear it. Even in my cowboy boots today.

I love sharing about perfume and cosmetics:) It’s 467 Preceuse. I intended to buy the lacquer 78 in Tenacious, but it isn’t made anymore. This is in the same vein-a deep berry pink. The coverage is buildable, lasts quite a few hours, doesn’t dry my lips out and fades evenly. Tenacious is still my preferred shade but this one is really good, too. Which shade did you choose?

allo the colours are really pretty. Preceuse is really pretty but more vibrant than what you’re describing. There is another one in the matte pearl shades that might be closer to what you are describing-I forget it’s name.

This morning I am wearing Nicolai Rose Royale layered with MFK Oud Satin Mood extrait roll on and loving the combination. Rose is one of my favourite notes.
I will try to wear scents where the Rose is not the first thing you smell, getting ideas from you all.
    Have a great week.

I’m wearing Halston (Classic), from a new bottle. I bought this one after reading a column on reformulations, the good, the bad, and the ugly, and Halston was reported as being quite like its original formulation. Back in the day, this was one of my sister’s favorites, but I never wore it. I smell no rose, although rose is listed in the middle notes.

Vintage Calèche is gorgeous! I’m saving that for later in the week, and today I’m in Soivohle Paracelsus. It has a dark rose note that is not so much toned down as abetted by the patchouli, cèpes, dark chocolate and tobacco that are also in there. Lovely in our sub-freezing temperatures this morning.

Today, since I now have the gist of the CP, I’m wearing Tauer’s PHI, which is a big benzoin bomb on me and I love it! Benzoin isn’t in the note list but I’d bet my bottom dollar it’s in there. Im sure there some rose in there, but the best part is I don’t smell it. 😜

Had a very laid back day yesterday, dawdling and reading, a bit of cleaning, etc. Finally got my summer plans locked down. The schedule is fabulous: 230 to 7pm for seven days in a row then a week off, alternating all summer!! Plenty of time on my working days to get the Baby T-Rex out and about and the every-other-week off is fabulous. It’s a huge county park with miles of hiking, equestrian, and mountain bike trails! Later today, I’m off to see a man about a bike! 🚲

Now, my second cuppa and errands…Have a great day, all!

Hold the phone…the MIDWEST! A place I’ve avoided as a travel nurse because of violent swings in weather and temperatures….more specifically, Minnesota. 🦟 I will miss the pronghorns and the sunsets in Utah but have much better pay, better schedule, and the amenities can’t be beat. Plus it’s a legit professional organization that was very thorough-background check, drug screen, two interviews! I have a good feeling about it, and hoping the job works well for both myself and the employer so returning next year is an option. ⛺️🔥

I’m wearing Y-Uszac Lale which has a drowsy, summer late-afternoon vibe…barefoot on the verandah watching insects hover over the garden sort of thing. Rose is a minor note, wafting across . I watched Queer last night and Daniel Craig as the William Burroughs stand-in was excellent capturing the loneliness and longing/ desperation of the character. Beautiful sets, colours etc for the Mexico City section …had the look of being filmed on sets ( which I think it was, in Rome).

Sotd 69 y/o Shalimar Eau de Toilette applied w its Lalique stopper

Today would have been my parents’ 70th Platinum Wedding Anniversary. Mom is still alive as is her Maid of Honor her sister my aunt. We’re celebrating with dinner tonight.

The fragrance was a first anniversary gift from Feb 5, 1956. It hasn’t aged well, but the marriage did for 42 yrs until my darling Dad passed away. Top notes gone, but base has endured, sort of like a long-term union perhaps.

    Vive L’Amour! Vive Shalimar!

I do usually associate a fragrance or a distinctive smell with special memories. Dad always wore Aramis and I’ve been known to follow a man around a shopping center when I catch a whiff; the man are usually quite old frankly. The younger generation hasn’t embraced some of the older scents. Adore that one gentleman here wore Hai Karate. That was in Dad’s rotation but not his signature. Also some 9 Flags and original Old Spice. Thank you for taking a moment to share this with me Carole!

I almost laughed out loud when I sprayed on the Comete sample. It’s SO very Chanel. Really beautiful and I can see the appeal, but a little too powdery for my preference. I feel like it reminds me of something…but can’t quite figure out what. A richer and creamier La Pausa? A lighter and less violet Lipstick Rose? A different take on my Ambre a Levres by Nez? I still prefer the Nez, but enjoyed the sample journey.

Is anyone else interested in trying Comete? I can send my sample on!

Good morning! And it is definitely a good morning here, it’s a public holiday for Waitangi Day and I’m taking a day’s leave tomorrow, so I have a four day weekend.
I’m eating breakfast and contemplating the day, Guerlain’s Vol de Nuit has come to mind and Fragrantica tells me it has a rose note amongst many things.

I’m taking half a point for Montale Black Aoud, which is mainly rose but it’s smacked with oud and patchouli pretty hard. When I think of a beast mode perfume, this is it, in a good way.

This week has been and will continue to be a great smelling one for me. I have lots of perfume loves that include a rose note but don’t smell primarily of rose. Today I’m in Bengale Rouge. I spent the first couple days of the week in Lush Cardamom Coffee and Maison Anonyme Pale Fire. I actually went ahead and finally bought a bottle of the latter yesterday evening so that’s something to look forward to. I’ve already made quite a few perfume purchases this year, oopsie.

My COBRA insurance will terminate at the end of the month. I looked into various options and may have come up with my choices. I am curious to know what you’ve experienced (NOT Medicare) with companies like AmeriHealth, aetnaCVSHealth, OSCAR, Horizon, UnitedHealthcare. I’ll repeat this list tomorrow since I am posting late. Thanks.

Also had a data breach with Aetna.

I got so tired of worrying about data breaches that I finally froze my credit. It took a lot less time than anticipated, and completely worth it for the peace of mind! I highly recommend it if you’re not needing to have your credit checked in the near future. And even if you do, you can apparently easily un-freeze it for the credit check.

Sunny and WARM here today. I think it got up to 62 degrees. Teflon kitty is a fan of this, and was much more active than she has been. She is currently thundering around the apartment as I type. 😺

Much better mood today for me. I have an upcoming somber anniversary this weekend; it will be 36 years since my Dad passed away unexpectedly. He was relatively young at the time.

Some body products were thunked today! That means I can dig into my stash and pull something else out to enjoy.

SOTD = commando for perfume, but wearing a scented body butter on my shins. Because that’s what I do. 😊

I’ve had only 1 lotion go bad among all the ones I’ve ever purchased. But yes, body lotions/creams/butters do have a shorter lifespan than perfumes. Some of my lotions have been around for years and are still fine. I keep them away from heat & light.

CP points for me today, I’m in VC&A Moonlight Patchouli. It’s got rose… and I don’t really detect it!

PSA for other lovers of miniature bottles. I picked up a couple of VC&A miniatures at a discounter a few months ago and have been enjoying them. They are adorable BUT when you pull off the cap, there’s actually a detached rubber stopper underneath. It’s fiddly to remove and impossible to do so without getting perfume all over your fingers.

Today I’m in Chanel Paris-Venise lotion (which has rose as a note) layered underneath Zara Livre Blanc.

Busy couple of days here so I haven’t reported in. I wore Guerlain Vol de Nuit and SL Iris Silver Mist earlier this week. Last night I wore some vintage Oscar de la Renta (definitely a kitchen sink scent which i believe contains rose).

Last night I earned CP points in ELDO You Or Someone Like You. The mint and grapefruit combo is refreshing.

Today went commando, but now spritzed Francesca Bianchi Under My Skin for more CP points. I’d like to sample some more of hers, but not sure I need a whole discovery set.

Another long work day, but actually feel like I’m digging myself out of the hole, which feels nice.

Made some broccoli cheddar soup tonight. Yum. I always add vadouvan curry to it. It sent taste intensely curry, but enhances the cheesy vibes. I rarely like any restaurant or store-bought broccoli cheddar soup, but always love my own.
