Thursday scent of the day 1/16

Posted by Robin on 16 January 2025 122 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also National Religious Freedom Day, or, if you prefer, National Nothing Day. Birthdays: Susan Sontag, Sade, Kate Moss. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m trying to stay warm, in Serge Lutens Chêne.

Reminder: 1/17 is Betty White's (1922-2021) birthday. Do absolutely whatever you like with the theme. If you need it: Betty White: A legacy of saucy joy that never grew old at The Christian Science Monitor, Why Betty White is so awesome at Today, Betty White, Progressive Superhero of TV History at Peabody Awards.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
My Guerlain Rouge Bonheur Snake bottle arrived and I am wearing it today! I looove the bottle. It opens with very warm and slightly spicy ginger, then slowly, pink roses blossom and become the focus. It’s simple, elegant and easy to wear.

Jo Malone Taif Rose report! It is a very jammy red rose scent. Providing more body is sweet, golden amber. The coffee is not as obvious as I had hoped, just a roasted hum in the background. This is a cologne intense and the sillage and staying power is quite impressive. One spritz on the back of my hand and I could still catch constant wafts of it for 3 hours easy. Quite delicious.

Did you get it through the Guerlain site? It doesn’t look to me that you have to reserve a bottle. Am I looking at the wrong thing? I think the price was $880.

Taif Rose sounds quite lovely but not terribly different from the JM Rose Amber Cologne that I already have. So, money saved.

I’m wearing Rose Musk from Alkemia, in honor of the Betty White character in The Golden Girls. It is a very straight forward rose fragrance, great for lovers of rose scents.

I had every intention of wearing DSH American Beauty today, a rose for Betty’s iconic Rose Nylund, but my nose wanted IA Dipped in Chocolate. Not sorry!
So much awfulness in the US right now, with the fires and snow and ice storms, National Nothing Day sounds pretty good.

Thanks to a mention of BWF’s yesterday, I was inspired to put on my big girl pants and wear the biggest, baddest (loathed by many) BWF I own: Guerlain Mahora. It is like your (probably favorite) auntie whose clothes are expensive but loud, whose jewelry is really jingly, who has one too many glasses of champagne and gives rib-cracking hugs. I’m looking out the window at snow falling, but indoors I’m in a tropical garden where kupaloke and pua melia are blooming. Betty White could have played that auntie brilliantly and would have had lots of fun with the name. It got discontinued, then maybe reformulated and brought back as Mayotte.

I have some BWFs that are humungous! We’re talking Godzilla big. I enjoy those but have to be in the right mood for something so “stompy”.

Indeed. Mood has more to do with my daily perfume selection than almost anything else. The one thing that trumps mood is the rare circumstance where the scent I’m in the mood for is wildly inappropriate for whatever is going on that day, even if applied sparingly. Luckily retirement has few of those days, and I have a few quiet fragrances that I love for those occasions. I’d love to know what your favorite humongous BWF’s are!

I have distant memories of Betty White from the Mary Tyler Moore Show but not much more than that ( though I know Golden Girls was on tv here, sometime later). Maybe a perfume that is smiley on the outside, steely on the inside? With claws? Or something foodie for the happy homemaker vibe. I don’t know. La Vierge de Fer for its metallic lily will do.

I don’t think Rose on Golden Girls had claws; rather, she was dumb, but dumb like a fox. She had the best comic timing of anyone I’ve ever seen.

I never saw Golden Girls, although I think it was VERY popular here. I have only distant memories of her on the Mary Tyler Moore Show too. I think in the US she is almost known more now for being (or seeming like) a good sport on any show she had even a small part on, much later in her career when many if not all of her contemporaries had stopped working. She was always popping up here and there in a cameo part, and just seemed cheerful.

So in the US, if she had a little cameo part in a sitcom they would advertise that…

My son, who has never seen Mary Tyler Moore or Golden Girls, and possibly has never heard of either, knew who she was, texted me that she had died pretty soon after the fact.

My whole family used to watch Golden Girls. My brother and I teased my Mom about being like Betty White’s character Rose. She was sweet most of the time, with an occasional flash of ornery.

No; the packaging says it is just a different presentation.
However, several reviewers on Fragrantica say 2014’s Glamorama seemed to them to be like the 1992 original. It does seem to have a bit more umph than some of my Angel bottles from various times.

    Frozen mango and yogurt smoothie

Still mild but tomorrow will be colder but still well above freezing. I reached for Rouge Nocturne today, it’s one of my best patchouli/rose, the rose is very natural smelling, it’s just classy. Tonight it’s Baiser Volé essence de parfum, a vanilla bomb that one, flowery lily vanilla that lasts forever, I’m finishing a cute little 15ml shaped like a lighter with a gold cap but have an 80ml bottle in the wings, just as well because it wasn’t long in production.

Ack, when I owned a small retail business inventory was the bane of my existence. I’m glad yours is done and you can hopefully relax.

Sorry you had another tough week, but McD’s fries (hope yours are hot and fresh) along with whatever your other favorites are, should be a comfort food trip. Sweet dreams, sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite!

In Au Coeur du Désert Marocain and quite certain that Betty White would enjoy this beauty.

CPs have a habit of making me very confident regarding people and things about which I actually “know” quite little🤔

Wearing two rose perfumes for Rose Nylund: Atelier des Ors’s Villa Primrose and Goutal’s Rose Splendide. VP is a dewy pink rose — a ballerina in a pink tutu vibe — with a healthy does of ambrette. With RS I get as much magnolia as I do rose, and a little bit of pear at first, which turns into vanilla later. This one has a creamy texture rather than dewy one. But I just had some everything-bagel-seasoned potato chips, so now I’m just wafting garlic. No regrets.

Tea today was Clipper Ship’s Masala Chai in the morning and F&M Afternoon Blend later on.

Plenty of brilliant sunshine today; the kind you only see at altitude. It was almost 60 here! You betcha I enjoyed it. Made sure to take care of pre-storm errands today. Fridge and pantry are stocked up, and the car has almost a full tank of gas. The ice scraper is handy too, in case I need to dig out the car.

Now I’m just waiting for the (bad) weather to roll in tomorrow afternoon/evening.

SOTD = hanging out yet again in Rihanna Rogue.

Yay for thunking, you’re the queen of body lotions while I have exactly one on the go at any given time, at the moment Vaseline intensive care cocoa butter and. a Youth Dew body cream, untouched, I should really use it, it’s at least five years old.

Life is too short to have itchy skin!

I’ve discovered that some scented lotions really are better if I mix them with a dab of unscented lotion.

How many inches are you expecting? We already have more snow as of last week than we did last year for the entire season.

Anywhere from 2 – 8 inches. Depends on the app or TV channel I check. Nothing major by my reckoning.

The cold is MUCH more concerning. It’s going to be around for several days.

Good luck with the snow! We got a dusting today in NJ but nothing like what you are expecting.

Congrats on the thunk! Is it worthy of replacement?

Projected snow totals are all over the map, so to speak. I’ve heard everything from 2 – 4 inches (yawn) to 4 – 8 inches. More powder, since it will be too cold for the gloopy stuff.

I like the Bliss body butter, but will not replace it. Right now I have quite the stash of lotions and potions! Time to use some of it up.

Late to the party today. Wearing Angel’s Share from a travel spray which is just about 2/3 empty. I’ll never buy a full bottle but I may be tempted to get another travel spray sometime after this one is empty, if it’s still in production.

    Happy Almost Friday!

If rose works for the CP, I’m nailing it today in POAL. I even got a compliment from my husband, since I accidentally oversprayed, a rarity for me. He seems to only detect my fragrances when I’m heavy handed!

Work is still super busy and I feel stressed so I haven’t been posting much. But I wanted to report that I finally got to sample Leather Jardin and Millesime Jasmin, thanks to Kris. Immediate love for Leather Jardin, and at such a decent price. I’m still getting to know (and maybe love) MJ, it’s not straightforward for sure.

I was thinking about going with POAL tomorrow.

My husband never says much about my fragrances, but for some reason he really liked Shalimar MI. He normally just says I always smell nice, so I guess that is good enough for me.

Glad you are enjoying the samples. Many of us on here own the Leather Jardin.
