It's Tuesday, plus World Logic Day and Ratification Day. Birthdays: Nina Ricci, John Dos Passos, Clarence Carter, Julian Bond, T Bone Burnett. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm commando for an exercise class later this morning, so I'll report my fragrance later. Tea at the moment is Numi Golden Chai.
Reminder: 1/17 is Betty White's (1922-2021) birthday. Do absolutely whatever you like with the theme. If you need it: Betty White: A legacy of saucy joy that never grew old at The Christian Science Monitor, Why Betty White is so awesome at Today, Betty White, Progressive Superhero of TV History at Peabody Awards.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Mythical Creatures teapot from Wedgwood ("This colourful teapot by designer Kit Kemp makes a striking centrepiece for your table setting. Kemp has brought her inimitable style to Wedgwood with the fantastical Mythical Creatures collection. Here, she transforms a classically shaped, silky white china teapot with a procession of imaginary birds and animals roaming through the wild") is $360.
This is another teapot I would love to have.
I’m wearing 31 Rue Cambon today — thunked off my decant. I don’t think I’ll repurchase; this perfume is unique and wonderful, but it still doesn’t feel like “me.”
I hope everyone in California is safe. The news I’ve read is really alarming.
Love this perfume. Sorry, it doesn’t work for you.
Twins!
I’m wearing Alkemia perfume oils this week. Today I layered O Tea! with The de Ceylon, which is a layering note. I intended to strengthen the black tea note, and I think I accomplished that.
Ah, it could be very useful to have a black tea layering note.
Hello.
Sotd is Lipstick Rose.
I visited Tom Ford to sniff their newest Rose Exposed. It is very peppery, woody and dense. Not your average rose for sure. I don’t like it that much. It’s too heavy on the peppers for me and not enough rose.
I shouldn’t have gone to TF because the SA talked me into getting a Oud Wood set with 10ml travel spray for 15% off. I don’t like OW on its own that’s why it’s been around for years and I never bought it but the SA showed me how it layers beautifully with other TFs that I own. It is verrry nice with Rose Prick.
Sometimes one is just hoping to be seduced into something nice by a persuasive SA!
Yes; I am about 50-50, intimidated, and ready to be swept away by a good sales pitch!
I initially read that as “stalked you into” … 😂
LOL – SA’s can sure make me feel that way!
Good salesperson🤣
Sounds like I should try Rose Prick one of these days.
Hello!
I’m in Dzing! I feel like I’m indulging my younger self-I first smelled this about 18 years ago and loved it. I’ve also been wearing Eau d’Hadrien, and La Chasse. If anyone here remembers MUA those seemed to get a lot of love on the Fragrance Board. I didn’t really have disposal income then, and there didn’t seem to be discounters in Canada, so a new bottle of something was very special, indeed 🙂
You smell fabulous! Dzing! is another one of Olivia Giacobetti’s greats.
I don’t think I have ever smelled it. What is it like?
Barnyard + circus
Oh, yes. I have heard that. Why would someone want to smell like a barn. I never quite figured that out though I have never smelled it.
It’s kind of jolly!
Kris, I’m laughing at Calypso’s description: it matches some reviews of this fragrance. I get sweet wood and gentle spice. No barnyard. Maybe try and sample it, if you can find some , and see what your nose says. I remember precisely where I was when I first smelled it, and how wonderful I thought it was. I find it very easy to wear.
Yes, I recall much chatter on the MUA frag board. You smell great!
I remember…that’s how I fell in love with La Chasse.
Yep, I sure remember those fun days on MUA.
I’m in Vanille Insensee for a sunny cold Tuesday.
We had just a dusting of snow overnight and single digit temps this morning. Warm up on the way though, into the 40s by Friday, which is downright balmy for January.
Great scent! Below zero this morning here, but we may get to the 40’s on Thursday. We are usually a day or two ahead of you.
Thanks!
Yes, and I’m usually a little ahead of lillyjo.😊
I’m getting 34 on Friday but next week I saw a high of 10! It’s 14 right now.
Dang, I hadn’t looked that far ahead, the weatherman said high of 2 on Monday!🥶
It sounds like the 40-degree temps I’ve been enjoying are working their way East.
I’m wearing Tocade today, described years ago over on Perfume Posse as a warm radiator scent. It feels very appropriate for a day which started with temps in the mid-teens, which have now climbed all the way to 24. The squirrels have nearly emptied the peanut-filled bird feeders; normally I’d have chased them off but in this bitter cold I didn’t have the heart to do so. Time to bundle up and refill them.
You smell wonderful – I always enjoy Tocade when I commit to the spritz!
It would be a commitment if spritzed, I’m sure! Luckily for me I have a little dabber bottle of the parfum and can keep the amount applied under control. I’m not good at controlling sprayers, as I have repeatedly proven to myself of late.
The post about Le labo’s new eucalyptus scent made me reach for a blend of essential oils I made that replicates the cemetery where I walk on a hot day: eucalyptus, rose, and a dash of peppermint ( as some of the briar roses has a candy cane peppermint facet). It’s not exactly subtle, as both the eucalyptus and rose oils are quite concentrated but it is good. I would like to try Koala one day. Smell Bent’s Yard Next Door used to be my eucalyptus adjacent scent but I only have a drizzle left. So, it’s official …so far it’s been the coldest January for 25 years. And today’s no different. I keep seeing cruise ship passengers in down jackets wandering around as if they’ve been dropped in Antarctica.
When I held an actual koala in Australia, I sniffed its fur, and it smelled of eucalyptus. Very sweet.
I remember when I spent a few weeks in the Blue Mountains out of Sydney. They are covered in eucalyptus ( the air is hazy with the volatiles, hence the name). It was almost dizzying. Fantastic.
Thanks for your email. Thinking, thinking, thinking….
And ours is the worst since 1980!!
I’m right in my assessment that this is the worst summer I’ve experienced here, because I moved to Wellington in 1985.
It’s so rubbish, eh.
Wearing Montale Patchouli Leaves today, wonderful patchouli on a cold snowy day.
I’m sure a bunch of you have sampled or purchased Phlur vanilla mist for skin and hair. What are your thoughts? For some inexplicable reason, I ordered a bottle this morning, unsniffed. Please tell me I didn’t mess up, I never purchase without sampling first but today my hand hit buy without even thinking about it.
Better you than me! I am still on the equivalent of a no buy (although resolution is low buy).
I don’t believe I have tried Phlur vanilla mist.
I don’t think I’ve tried anything from Phlur, so I can’t advise.
I haven’t tried that one. Honestly though Phlur smells pretty good in general. Hair mists are pretty fun too.
I like hair mists and I have just been craving vanilla scents this winter, so there we are.
Wearing Trayee from a travel spray.
I’ve procrastinated so long about doing laundry, I’m now in the Jalapeño Zone! 😂🧺🧺🧺🧺
Ha!
Lol!
LOL🤣
She’s been pretty great lately though, or at least that’s my impression!
Ah, so now you are dealing with a few Fourteeners worth of laundry?
Wearing Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Touch hand cream layered with Clinique Happy. It’s a nice combination but not appropriate for the high of 17 degrees.
Probably is cheering though! Which makes it sort of appropriate for 17.
The Kit Kemp designs for Wedgewood are great! I fell in love with the Sailor’s Farewell design after Robin posted it and was able to get the teapot and mug on clearance when it was discontinued. I may try to snag a mug in this pattern the same way.
SOTD is a sample of 4160 Tuesdays Chocolate Ginger, inspired by hajusurri’s recent description. I have a similar impression – cocoa power mixed with some cream, and candied ginger. Sweet enough to be pleasant, but not “sweet” sweet. It is blooming quickly because I am in the office and they set the temp much warmer than I do at home.
Tea today is Clipper Ship Burnt Sugar Black Tea.
Oh, that was a great teapot, so glad you got one.
Good morning! This is my third day back at work and I’m getting back into the usual routine.
I ordered a perfume to comfort myself over going back to work – SL’s Bapteme du Feu. Kanuka has mentioned it frequently and I recalled that I quite liked it years back. I got a sample from Surrender to Chance which arrived yesterday and a FB is now on its way.
I’m twins with Glannys, wearing 31 Rue Cambon today.
Bapteme du Feu can be found for such a low price that I’d say it is perfume-math free, due to how excellent it smells. Glad to hear of someone else who felt love at first sniff!
For some perverse reason I’m back in T Rex today. It’s as if I’m trying to conquer the beast, like St George with the dragon! Fortunately the cats don’t seem to mind. I’m sitting here and can’t move because I have three cats on my lap now. It’s very cozy and I don’t have to go out anyway.
Love that image of you and your feline friends
I am back in fog and cold this morning but the short tropical break was so nice. I wore Crabtree and Evelyn Carnation Toilet Water yesterday. It’s a very old bottle and smells wonderful. I could still smell it on my fleece today so I added more carnation with DSH Oeillets Rouges. I tried a new recipe for crispy chocolate chip cookies that made the worst cookies of my life, so today I plan on making a tried and true recipe to erase the memory (and taste) of the horrid cookies. I think I’ll compare the recipes to see where the new recipe went awry.
Oh my! It’s a shame to waste good chocolate chips!
Ugh, sorry to hear about your recipe fail!
Aww! I’m sorry for the bad recipe! One time I was trying to make a savory cookie (with cheese); I ended up with salty crumbs. I know exactly how you feel.
It’s cold but the sun is shining…
Shalimar for the library
Does everyone now I have a favorite flanker 😉
Tea is coffee-running around a lot today, listening to Genesis on my phone…”I can’t dance…”
Robin hope your chai is good!
How is your daughter doing?
This coming Monday she will get her stitches out.
She is hobbling along and taking it easy
It is good, and just as well I’ve never had your FIL’s chai 🙂
I’m in Ferentina. It’s my obscure scent that Caesar’s Palace marketed years ago.
Today I’m getting more spice, so I had to look up the notes to refresh my memory. There’s cinnamon in the mid notes, so it could be that. The bottle is nearly finished, and it’s not spraying out well anymore so it could be a thunk very soon. I loved this scent for many years, and it’s one that I’ve gotten complements with.
On fragrancenet it’s categorized as a floral green with addiitional notes of marigold, cassis, orange flower, rose and jasmine with sandalwood and amber in the base.
Good work!
Thanks, AnnieA! 😊
Working on finishing the travel spray of Iris Poudre.
Do you like it? Definitely one of my top five favorites.
I do, although EL’s Jasmine White Moss does slightly edge it out. Happily, for the latter I still have a partial bottle.
Too cold to wear anything other than something cozy. Went with Coco Noir body cream and perfume.
The body cream is so delicious
It really is.
Drat! I was at ULTA yesterday and totally forgot to do any perfume sniffing.
Nice, you smell wonderful!
I was initially drawing a bit of a blank for Betty White as the inspiration for perfume but then a couple ideas hit me. One is for any perfumes with Gold or Golden in the name for The Golden Girls. The other idea is kinda a wacky one, very specific to me.
Betty White appeared in the third season of one of my favorite tv shows, Community. In it she plays an anthropology professor who is very unorthodox. I’ll share a video clip or two later in the week. Anyway, so I thought for the cp I can also wear perfumes that I purchased at the store Anthropologie. I used to shop there a lot circa 2008-2014 or so and was able to go through my perfumes and make a list of what I bought from there.
Today I’m in Smoked Amber, a D.S. & Durga limited edition for Anthropologie from 2009. This is back before D.S. & Durga rebranded, when they were still focused on themes of handcrafted botanical scents and Americana. Not surprisingly this is an assertive scent up front, but give it an hour and it becomes more cozy. Cinnamon is a dominant note. I even found these reviews Kevin did here on the line! I also have Royal Purpure from this series, which may get a wear this week. https://freebox.it.com/2009/10/21/d-s-durga-1538-rheims-smoked-amber-east-mideast-and-royal-purpure-fragrance-reviews/%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E
I love your interpretation of the CP! Community is such a great show
Glad to see another Community fan!
Cinnamon twins today! I also like your take on the CP; your sotd sounds great. Assertive scents could be a good project.
Hi cinnamon-twin!
OMG I totally forgot she was in Community. And, she was great. Thank you. Have been thinking might be time to rewatch the first few seasons.
It’s always a good time for a rewatch.
Great ideas for the CP! Thanks for sharing them.
Glad to be of service!
Frozen cherries and yogurt smoothie but also a coffee, so will find out if I can fall asleep or not.
After a few days of rather cold weather for the UK it was 10C and sunny today, it was so pleasant being outside. Today I sprayed Sana Jardin Nubian musk from a sample I wanted to finish, it’s an interesting musk , neither quite dirty nor clean with a kitten growl, definitely something Egyptian about it, it grew on me, rather low ratings on Fragrantica, not that it bothers me, I am considering a travel spray as it’s 40% off on their website. Tonight it’s Muddled Plum, one of my best Molton Brown scents, it’s quite delicious, very plummy and not too sweet.
Kitten growl made me think of FM Superstitious, but it’s not a musk. If you ever find a great deal on it I think you would like it.
That M wasn’t on my radar, so thank you very much Lillyjo.
*FM
Glad to hear that you got some sun today!
It had been rather cold, yesterday was such a treat.
Hi everyone! I’m luxuriating in my day off, still in my PJs and snuggling with my dog under a blanket on the couch. It’s horribly cold here today, but the sun is bright and that makes me happy.
I bought a small bottle of Devotion a few weeks ago since so many people here like it, and I’m wearing it now. It reminds me a bit of the old Hanae Mori I used to have, though my bottle was probably fake since I bought it on the street in NYC 😂
I missed all the New Year’s stuff here, but I’ll say that my resolutions (apart from the usual exercise more and eat healthier) are about using up what I have and not buying more until I make a dent in my collections. So that includes perfumes, soaps and lotions and skin care products, candles, and yarn. I’m also working on finishing up or frogging (undoing so I can repurpose the yarn) my unfinished knitting projects (there are so many). I placed my last perfume order at the end of December, and I’m determined to stay on a no-buy until I thunk some things!
I feel for all the people in the LA area who are suffering; I hope the fires end soon.
My yarn and my perfume collections both fall into the SABLE category: Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy. And that’s not necessarily including the UFO’s. I should feel worse about it than I do.
I think I could probably use up all my yarn in my lifetime if I never acquired more, but probably not my perfume unless I committed to hajusuuri-level sprays daily! My UFOs go back many years… I’m a pretty fast knitter once I get going, but a very slow finisher. And I’m fickle. But that’s okay, no bad feelings here either!
same here, I can someday use up all my yarn – I’ve found sock yarn makes excellent hats, scarves, and shawls 😅 – but the perfume stash is here forever and ever. 💕
Oh yes, I love using sock yarn for things other than socks!
You know the weather is cold when pets get extra snuggly.
I read this as extra soggy. Lol!
I don’t even want to think about an extra soggy cat!
We help keep each other warm 🥰
It’s very cold here. Fortunately I have the day off and I haven’t gone anywhere. I am sampling 2 perfumes. YSL Babycat and Guerlain Cuir Beluga. I can’t say that I love either one.
What the – – ? I am thinking you have the newer version of Cuir Beluga, in which case, you’re excused 🤣. YSL Babycat I have to try again because I may have misidentified it in my decant (mega) stash.
I know! I associate Cuir Beluga with you. I have what I think is a new sample. To be fair to it, I only sprayed once. I will retest at another date.
I think you have to spray it several times.
Love the name Babycat!
Unfortunately, your area is going to get @#$%& cold very soon. Be careful, and stay warm.
Huge cold front starting Sunday. I’m not looking forward to it.
I’m getting it Friday night. 🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶
SOTD = Tom Ford Lost Cherry
🍒 ❤️!
(can’t link again … le sigh …)
Per an article on The New York Post, there are some behaviors that make TSA suspicious of a traveler. Would you believe one of them is wearing TOO MUCH PERFUME. I have to say when I am traveling (flying), I tend to be less generous with my spraying. Not sure if you can get to it, but here’s the article:
https://nypost.com/2025/01/13/lifestyle/these-common-behaviors-may-be-red-flags-for-the-tsa-and-the-reason-why-youre-delayed/?utm_campaign=iphone_nyp&utm_source=mail_app
I agree with the point on excessive talking. Whenever I have a customer trying to do a fraudulent return they tend to talk a lot. The longer the story the more suspicious I get. Another trick is pretending they are your best friend and being overly complimentary.
This just happened to me with a co-worker the other day. Compliments are nice but the effusive, over doing it kind of compliments make all my alarms go off! 🚩🚨🚩🚨🚩 I’m going to keep my eye on her because I immediately don’t trust her! 🙃
Oy! Would love to see how this turns out!
So true about the obsessive talking! I usually don’t even open my mouth except to ask questions.
Too much perfume? Sheesh. What one person considers too much may be barely detectible to someone else. There’s no hard & fast measurement of that.
gosh, yes, that’s true for sure. I wear miniscule amounts of some scents and still think I’m smelling pretty loud. 😅
wait, whut? 😳 Aren’t all perfume people on the good side? 😢
sotd = Vanille Galante
Smells like a vanilla-banana hybrid to me. 😅 I love bananas so that’s a good thing. 🍌 Always comforting and comfortable too.
Hope everyone is having a beautiful scented day and using your perfume superpowers for the good of all noses. 💕
Love “perfume superpowers”
we gotta use ’em for good! 💪🌟😁
Mmm, that sounds yummy! Now I wish I had some banana pudding.
Posting late today. Winter is headed here Friday night with a vengeance, so I am trying to get things done before then. I intend to hunker down and not go anywhere once the weather turns.
And for those NSTers with a passing familiarity of northern Colorado: RIP Johnson’s Corner. The truck stop is still around, but the diner closed on Sunday. My brother and I have fond childhood memories of it.
SOTD = back in Rihanna Rogue.
Are you going to get any snow with the cold?
In theory, yes. There’s some in the forecast. I’m much more focused on the sub-zero temps that are being mentioned. I might have to let my faucets drip over the weekend thru MLK Day.
Rogue is pretty good. Sadly I got just a roll-on (at a deep discount) one year after Christmas. Then a few weeks later I passed on the full-sized bottle on a ridiculous sale at my good pharmacy (where they also sell Chanel and the like). If I’m not mistaken, I think it was $6.00.
I hope the cold isn’t too long-lived where you are.
Thanks Gail!
I am hoping that the estimates of 100 hours below freezing are incorrect. ❄️❄️❄️ We shall see.
Ack, I hope the extreme cold won’t last that long! We’ll be getting it starting Sunday. I didn’t know that diner, but I hate it when old favorites close. Feels like the end of an era.
It does feel like a connection to the area’s history has been lost. Apparently another restaurant will occupy the building. I’m hoping they keep the old neon signage.
MLK Day tends to be wicked cold here.
Sorry that a childhood landmark is no more.
Hope you will be well prepared for the cold wave, lots of layers help, have you had to get more warm clothing since you moved or do you make do?
The building will still be standing. But a chain restaurant will occupy the space.
I have plenty of wool socks and warm clothes that I brought with me during my move. It gets cold on the Eastern Seaboard too, at least in the mid-Atlantic region. Plus, like you said, layers.
Chanel Cuir de Russie
Gorgeous!
Quite late but wearing Fischersund 101. I can’t think of a Betty White connection unless she’s been to Iceland.
