Wednesday scent of the day 1/8

Posted by Robin on 8 January 2025 191 Comments

It's Hump Day and David Bowie’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

So Denmark takes the problem of food waste seriously, or at least, way more seriously than we seem to here in the US. In Copenhagen there is even a restaurant that makes all its products from discarded bananas. My scent: Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Banane.

Reminder: on 1/10, we're off to Denmark! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in Denmark, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to Denmark, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Entrance to Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen [cropped] by Mustang Joe at flickr; public domain. Tivoli Gardens, in Copenhagen, is the third-oldest operating amusement park in the world.

Robin, how exciting to go to Denmark. Ever since I watched Borgen on Netflix I’ve wanted to visit!

LesLiesse, we do a themed Friday project every week and this week it’s Denmark…

      https://freebox.it.com/scent-of-the-day-friday-community-projects-2025/%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E

I wish I was going myself in real life but I’m not! I loved Borgen too.

Oops! Thanks for clarification! Which reminds me to ask how do you keep track of your fragrance purchases and impressions? App? Spreadsheet? Perfume journal?

Sotd: The Harmonist Hypnotizing Fire. Because apsara asked how I liked it. A bit too spicy for me. Next up wearing Abel Laundry Day on one arm then Black Anise on other to compare drydowns for Kanuka.

I love a good spice, must get a sample soon.

I also use a spreadsheet to keep track of what I try. I don’t keep detailed notes, but enough to know whether I liked something or not.

I used to keep detailed notes in a Word document, but I’ve long since given that up.

I do keep a note in Evernote that lists purchases.

I keep detailed perfume notes for both samples and full bottles of perfume in 2 separate Word documents. Which get backed up regularly and saved to an external thumb drive.

I’ve never been to Scandinavia at all, however, there were two long-running Tivoli restaurants in Arlington. In the 1990s, they specialized in gourmet food and fancy cakes. At some point they must have changed hands and began offering sandwiches instead of gourmet food. Recently, the one nearest me was remodeling and now offers Korean snacks, such as the fancy hot dogs, and mochi donuts, different flavors and fancy icings every day. Still with the fancy cakes, too! Mochi donuts are surprisingly delicious.

I might wear L’Heure Bleue this week, which Luca Turin describes as having a delicious pastry effect.

BTW, I looked up L’Heure Bleue on the Guerlain site and found this 1948 illustration by Clement Serveau from their archives:

Also, the most 90s possible David Bowie and Annie Lennox performance. This version has some of the rehearsal footage, which makes you wonder, where on Earth did they get their final, over the top stage performances?

Oh, that was a good watch this morning. I’d never seen it with the rehearsal footage before — was fun to see George Michael in there, mouthing the words along. I love Annie, and she just embodies Freddy here.

Sotd is Rabanne Fame Parfum. Pink pepper and mangoes but still kinda clean?
It’s been a while since I had them but maybe I should get a tin of Danish butter cookies for this week. My favourites are the ones with granulated sugar on top.

Happy Birthday David Bowie. I know what I’ll be cueing up on Spotify today.🕺
I’m in Livre Blanc. It’s been a bit since I’ve posted. Hope the new year is going well for everyone. Can you believe a third of January will be over this weekend?! It’s going fast. We are having our typical January bitter cold with single digit temps this morning, but I will not complain because, sun. The sun it out! And it’s shining into my east facing office window. It’s heaven.☺️ This may not seem all that remarkable but the weatherman did the statistics for our December when I watched it New Year’s Eve, and we had exactly 2 clear days in the whole month! No wonder I felt like I was slogging through. The struggle was real y’all.

SOTM is TF Noir Pour Femme. I haven’t worn this in a while and it’s still a favorite, although it’s one that requires just the right mood. On me it conjures coriander, or cardamom, or something like that — maybe the kulfi note? — and that’s what keeps it from being a no-brainer. But this morning I’m enjoying it very much.

I’m trying to find ideas for Denmark and perfume but will need to keep pondering this challenge. I have been to Copenhagen once and unfortunately it was in January and was ferociously cold and wet. Tivoli was closed. I did luck out in that the big department stores were having sales and I had fun shopping there. I remember seeing numerous very elegant women in fur coats on the streets and it was so cold I envied them. One clear memory is the fancy Georg Jensen shop on a big street or square. Very beautiful designs. In fact I just visited their online shop and spent way too much time imagining that I could buy some of the stunning gold jewelry pieces there! Here, you can do it too! https://www.georgjensen.com/en-us
I’ll have to check in again later once I’ve chosen a scent for the day.

Their national flower is the daisy, and I think Georg Jensen did some daisy themed works fairly recently, which were sweet. Maybe just a modernist theme to go with all the incredible designers, or something metallic…a lot of pewter and silverware.

I have Royal Copenhagen Christmas plates that used to be very popular. I had them up in my kitchen at one time when it was blue. I think I probably have 20 of them. They used to be very expensive. I have no idea what they are worth anymore. Mine are probably 50 years old. My mother gave them to me many years ago after she took them off her wall.

    https://www.dailyartmagazine.com/lili-elbe-and-gerda-wegener/

So I’m looking at artists Lili Elbe ( who was the inspiration behind the movie The Danish Girl ) and her wife , the artist Gorda Wegener. Elbe painted landscapes, often with a bridge motif ( linking or symbolically transitioning from male to female) while Wegener did a lot of stylised, illustrative work. There’s a reproduction of a face cream image: the woman holds a mask with a tired , old face while her image is a young, smiling face. Quite creepy really. Matching it with Kelly Caleche which has a vintage “ cosmetic” vibe mixed with modernist “ sportiness”.

Oh my goodness, the fires are something.

Lots of smoke and ash in my neighborhood as the winds go south from Santa Monica.
But I am lucky, just trees down and lost power for just a few minutes last night. And I am always ready to bug out if needed.

It’s also Elvis Presleys birthday – the man would be 90 this year.

The first time I went to Tivoli was in 1971.

I would eventually go on to work at Disney HQ and learn about and see the pictures of Walt and his brother Roy visiting Tivoli when they were designing the first theme park.

My sister and I went in 1991 on a trip from Sweden. She was charmed and lots of french fries were eaten.

SOTD will be commando I think – theres so much smoke in the air and it’s very dark out. Maybe I will just use my le labo Hinoki body cream post shower.

Those fires are so scary! You are smart to have a bug out bag ready to go!

As for Disney, a long time ago, when I first moved to St Pete, there was a legit log house near me that friends of Disney owned back in the day. The daughter of the then current occupant was a friend of a friend and one day we stopped there as we were headed out somewhere together. Anyway, she showed us some doodles Disney had made on the logs in one of the rooms of the cabin! Even then (this was back in the early 80’s) I was pretty astounded. I know the cabin was removed long ago but not sure if those doodles were saved or not.

Yesterday the internet was out in my area, I have no idea why, but I couldn’t post. Today I am trying to think how to link Denmark with my little perfume collection here, but not having much luck. I went to Tivoli sometime in the late ’70s, I think it was. Today I’m wearing Rhubarbe Ecarlate.

Today I’m testing a sample of Aedes Corfu Kumquat. The opening is gorgeous — a fantastic bitter orange note with some salt water. If that opening lasted I would buy a full bottle of this, no question. But it did what citrus does and faded relatively quickly into a salty skin musk. It is a lovely musk, but not something I need a full bottle of. I’m going to give this sample another go in warmer weather and see if the citrus holds on longer then.

Tea today is Clipper Ship Lemon Chiffon, which is a nice adjacent note to the opening of the CK.

I’m looking forward to All Creatures season 5 starting this weekend.

      • Vee says:
        8 January 2025 at 8:04 pm

In my mind there are two kinds of salt (or I guess salt water really): beachy salt water, which has a seaweed note in it, and middle-of-the-ocean salt water, which doesn’t have that seaweed note. I generally like the latter, but the former is hit and miss (and mostly miss) for me. The salt note in Corfu Kumquat was the middle-of-ocean variety to my nose, so that aspect was fine, I just wish the citrus note lasted longer because I loved it. I got 10 minutes at best. I’m hoping it will stick around longer if I wear it in the summer.

Is salt a no-go for you?

It’s challenging. I don’t have a problem with the (supposed) caviar notes in TM Womanity. Or the salt/woody/aquatic combo of Hermes EdM Bleue. But I have tried other perfumes with salt notes in them that were Very Not Good on me.

It’s cold for southeast England and there is a snow advisory but it’s above freezing. Thanks to SheriG’s mention of it yesterday, I’m wearing Cuir Améthyste today.

I looked up Danish pastries and found a few that used almond paste, so I hunted my collection for scents with an almond note and found several: Hypnotic Poison, Lolita Lempicka Fleur Defendue, Bvlgari Jasmine Noir (really??), and Omnia. I hasten to add that it was not my lame nose which discovered the almond note, but Fragrantica.

I also love Kanuka’s mention of Isak Dinesen earlier this week, I feel like that calls for Safari, which always reminded me of Out of Africa.

SOTD = 4160 Tuesdays Shadowed Veil EDP

Meh – “fresh” forest floor which I normally like but this one has something my nose does not agree with. So far, I have loved 3 out of 4 – not bad I say! Also, there must be something wrong with either my phone or IG because there’s no way for me to copy the link! If you feel like it, you can 🔍 for hajusuuri while in IG.

In other news, I went back to the mall today to get a seat cushion. The one I currently have was squashed from being used too often. Of course I had to try to see if the Christmas holiday cushion (for the back, not the butt) was still available and how much that cost since there was no barcode / label. The cashier went to look and couldn’t find anything similar and brought back an EASTER / SPRING cushion that quite frankly had nothing to do with the cushion I wanted. He said it would be $20 and I said how about $10 because it is Christmas-themed (gingerbread house, snow, peppermint swirls, Christmas lights) but he said no. Anyway, money saved, I suppose 🤷🏻‍♀️.

I’ve worn this scent three days running and enjoyed it very much.

I’m not often so fascinated with a perfume like this. It’s big big florals, and reminds me of vintage Ysatis which I also enjoy in small doses.

Robin, there seems to be a grammatical error in the second sentence of the second paragraph. There’s a verb missing from the sentence that begins “In Copenhagen…”

It was a bone chilling minus 3 degrees F this morning when I woke up to feed Teflon kitty her breakfast at 6:33. Glad I wore ski socks to bed! It did warm up to the mid 30’s this afternoon, so got above freezing. Made clearing the car off a lot easier.

In other weather news, I hope the LA contingent of NSTers are safe and sound. Heard about the fires. Truly terrifying.

I don’t think that’s it. I did like the Tauerville ones, but the others just seemed strong and masculine leaning. Probably just me.

It’s a contender for a Birthday Perfume purchase. 😉 It’s up against vintage Samsara parfum, though…

What a rollercoaster 24 hours it’s been with these L.A. fires. I’ve had family forced to evacuate and others who are still on evacuation warnings, we had 2 family members, 3 dogs and 1 cat here today, with our own fate uncertain, and one SIL in Altadena whose house was one of only a handful left standing after the crazy winds. And the DH and this SIL spent the afternoon on her roof with water bottles waiting to put out embers.
Nobody is out of the woods yet and now a fire has broken out in the Hollywood Hills though thankfully the demon winds have died down.
I had no time for fragrance today but have finally put on a bit of Tom Ford Noir de Noir from a very partial bottle I recently procured. This is a heavenly scent and very soothing to me, but I sorrow for all the friends and strangers who have lost their homes and can never recoup everything. The devastation is unbelievable.

How terrifying. I’m so sorry this is happening. May the winds calm and heavy rains prevail.

Thank you everyone! We are hanging in there and the winds are gone and it’s eerily quiet and everything smells like a firepit and the air is majorly unhealthy. My heart goes out to all who are facing much greater losses.
