It’s Tuesday and National Tempura Day. Birthdays: Zora Neale Hurston and Gerald Durrell. What fragrance are you wearing?
There is apparently a tradition in Denmark that if you're still single at 25, your friends can cover you in cinnamon. I suspect this is not widely practiced but it's a good story, and so I'm wearing cinnamon, in Tauer Perfumes Phi — Une Rose de Kandahar. Tea at the moment is Numi Golden Chai, with extra cinnamon to stay on theme.
Reminder: on 1/10, we're off to Denmark! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in Denmark, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to Denmark, or that features a local ingredient, or ?
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: The Nordic Sea Tea Pot shown above is by Broste Copenhagen, and comes in multiple sizes and colors. (We featured one before.)
Good morning-lovely tea pot image.
I’m in Eau d’Hadrien body wash, and a spritz of Eau de Lavandre. Really love this scent but hardly ever wear it. I tired a no buy last year with the dismal result-I bought loads of things. SO Over Christmas I sort of put my collection in order, and realized I have enough for this lifetime. And possibly my next. So now I’m looking at some older purchases with love and I’m wearing them, and remembering what life was like when I bought them. It’s a fun way to view my collection. Also lavender should have calming properties. It’s the first few days of real winter driving, which I loathe and do all the time. I hope this calms my nerves a bit.
Hope everyone’s commutes are icy and snow free 🙂
I love all my Goutal bottles. I never tried their body products.
Hope the roads are ok where you are, carole — they are really not that bad here, but join in you preferring not to drive in snow.
Hello.
Sotd is Lush Chelsea Morning. It is deeelicious! Smells exactly like butter toffee and lemon drops. Can’t stop sniffing myself.
I also bought 5 of Lush’s Goodnight Sweetheart pillow spray. It smells amazing and really helps with falling asleep. I only picked 2 up last year and kicked myself for it.
OK, I might need some Chelsea Morning!
This reminds me that I need to get out the Turmeric Latte now that I’m home… 🙂
Yesterday we had a snowy and icy wintery mix, which resulted in my oldest taking her first trip to the ER for 13 stitches. She is home with me today and on the couch with her leg up doing homework. When I went to the ER, I asked for a wheelchair since she couldn’t put weight on, the gash was so deep, and the security guard didn’t want to help me or find me a wheel chair, so this huge man got out of his truck and said, “Ma’m I’m gonna carry her in for ya!” I was almost moved to tears.
Tea today is trying to make my FIL chai tea. I found my flaw, that he uses fresh ginger, so I tried today but for some reason when someone else makes you tea it tastes better than your own. My daughter loves Bengal Spice-so she is having a cup of that.
For comfort, I am in Shalimar Tonka
Sometimes I wonder if I am missing out on the Iris and Jasmin. Maybe they will make it to the discounter websites and I will buy. For now, I am saving my pennies for the bill that will come from the ER.
Goodness! Sending healing wishes to your oldest. Bless that kind man for helping you out.
Shalimar Iris is like Prada Candy and OG Shalimar had a baby, while Jasmine is Shalimar freshed up with watery jasmine. If they sound just okay to you then you are definitely not missing out because Tonka is also a great one! This year Shalimar is 100 yrs old if I am not mistaken, so something exciting might be in the works (I hope anyway…) so those saved pennies may have somewhere to go.
I didn’t realize Shalimar was having a birthday
Oof, sending healing thoughts to your daughter. From what I’ve observed, the Millesimes never show up at the discounters, so enjoy that Tonka!
Oh no, so sorry. Thank goodness for good samaritans.
Sending get well soon wishes to your daughter. I’m so glad someone stepped in to help you at the ER!
Sounds like a nasty accident. I hope it heals well
I hope the kiddo heals quickly and well. Sorry for your negative interaction, but in some places Security is not allowed, per hospital policy, to assist in any “patient care.”However, not trying to get a wheelchair for her or trying to find someone who could is just disgraceful. I’m sorry that happened to you.
So sorry about your daughter.
I can certainly send you decants of Shalimar Iris and Jasmine if you haven’t tried them. I love both! Guerlain doesn’t sell the iris one anymore, but they are still selling
Didn’t finish my sentence… but they are still selling the jasmine.
So sorry for your daughter, I hope she heals quickly!
The stitches means she will have less scarring, and I’m sorry she was injured. Love the big guy in the truck! Tea always tastes better when someone else makes it for you.
They put a curtain up so she couldn’t see any stitching 🧵
Thanks everyone!
I hope your daughter heals up well, and thank heavens for helpful people! (Boo to the unhelpful ones.)
Poor kid, your story arriving at the hospital shows that some human beings have a great heart if others don’t, I would have been so moved too.
Thankfully someone stopped to help. It’s a bit mind boggling that the guard didn’t even try to help with a wheelchair; I’m sorry that happened to you.
I was annoyed. The security guard inside as soon as he saw my daughter left and got a wheelchair. The one outside was useless
Poor child! Hope she heals fast.
How very frightening for you and for your daughter! I’m so glad that someone helped you out. I really hope she’ll heal fully and quickly.
Ouch! Your poor kiddo! So glad that someone stepped up to help both of you at the Emergency Room. Hugs, and healing thoughts.
What a stressful day, I’m glad she is ok for the most part.
I’m wearing Isabela Capeto. I’ve had this for years, but this is the first time I’ve worn it. I should have over sprayed, because I can barely smell it.
Gosh, forgot all about that one! Is it the cool red doll bottle?
https://freebox.it.com/2007/09/23/ungaro-by-emanuel-ungaro-isabela-capeto-perfume-new-fragrances/%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E
That bottle is amazing!
She did a followup scent with the same bottle in white. Not sure if she ever did more. Agree the bottle is amazing!
We had lake effect snow yesterday, but only about 2″, thank heavens.
The sun’s actually out right now, such a boon after mostly permagloom over the last couple of weeks.
In Shalimar Iris–they grow irises as well as tulips in Denmark, right?
Of course they grow irises!
Good to know as I could wear iris the rest of the week!
Heh…great idea with the iris!
I’m beginning the day in Armani Privé Cuir Améthyste in honor of that gold gown Demi Moore wore at the Golden Globe Awards. Thank you again to the lovely NSTer who introduced me to this beautiful fragrance!
In other Wonderful Things news, we had a gorgeous sunrise here that prompted an Owen-Wilson-esque “oh waow!” from me; and I have stumbled upon what may be my next new favorite comfort-read series. It’s the Flavia de Luce series from Alan Bradley, and the fact(s) that it’s a long-running series and most of them have a waiting list at my local library gives me hopes of hours and hours of entertainment. I’m starting with an interim novelette from the series (that happened to be available immediately) and am enjoying it so far. Bradley’s style reminds me a bit of the Peter Wimsey series, which I adore.
Tell me more about your SOTD
It’s a very elegant leather fragrance that skews floral/amber/woody. The official description is, for once, fairly accurate: “The scent starts with a vivid opening of coriander, rose, and bergamot. At its heart, violet, birch, and patchouli blend to create a rich, floral and woody experience. The composition concludes with a warm base of benzoin, labdanum, and bourbon vanilla, offering a luxurious and deep finish.”
Thank you
Oh, I love Peter Wimsey and long-running Brit book series — thanks so much!
I love the Flavia de Luce series!
You’ve inspired me both to wear Cuir Améthyste tomorrow and to look into that book series. I’ve been sulking and not reading mysteries ever since Reginald Hill died; maybe I can move on now.
Cuir Amethyste sounds like it’s well worth a sniff! I’ll keep an eye out for it next time I’m at one of the ‘fancy’ malls out here.
https://blixen.dk/en/rungstedlund/karen-blixens-home/entrance-hall-and-gallery
I’m starting with Karen Blixen ( Out of Africa, Babettes Feast) . Apart from running a coffee plantation in Kenya, and writing books, she also liked to paint and I’m matching one of her watercolours of roses with SL Fille de Berlin. It’s not really a “ watercolour” rose but I think it matches Blixen’s personality and resourcefulness .
Kanuka, I went to her home in Nairobi last year. And visited Rungstedlund many years ago while traveling through Denmark and Sweden.
SOTD is Chanel Cuir de Russie. Just cause.
Wow, how wonderful. Your travels always sound so good.
I have built my life around travel from 18 years old and still going at 71.
My footsies have touched over 150 countries thus far. The intent was always to see what was around the next corner.
Major points! 🙂
My coffee cup next to me says – ” I had a farm in Africa”.
💕
I don’t have any associations or ties with Denmark, except that I would love to visit that country (and the entire area) one day.
I love the casually beautiful tea accoutrements in todays photo-sky and clouds all in one tea set. 🥰
I went for Nicolai Vetyver today which mostly straddles the unisex line, but leans a teensy bit towards the masculine side on me. I find it very warming and comforting and not so masculine as to make me feel we don’t fit together well.
Well, people, I’m stunned and amazed. Started Sunday, talked to security, then yesterday got more info from them about parking Biggie Smols and what I was told was nothing short of astonishing. They have 3 RV spaces with electric hookups available to ANYONE who needs them, patient or staff. He APOLOGIZED about not having water and sewer hookups! NO charge! There’s a big Class A there and a travel trailer, so I’m just parked in the gravel overflow lot because I didn’t want to take the last space. (Many elderly couples who RV in retirement end up with one or the other having a medical event that lands them in the hospital for an undetermined time so the other half of the couple would need a place close by to hookup.) I don’t need electric anyway, since I have a robust solar set-up. But I cannot TELL you the difference in attitude here from the PNW. In Oregon, I ended up cancelling a contract after two weeks because I found out I couldn’t be in ANY public park ANY TIME of day or night EVER. Not even to walk my dog. I got booted by the PoPo one bright day while walking doggo…🤯
If you ever get to this area while traveling about, I highly recommend the Coronado Historic site. I spent hours there Sunday. They let me take T-Rex everywhere, gave an impromptu docent led tour and another staff person kindly held the dogs leash so I could climb up onto a kiva roof and then descend into the kiva itself by another ladder. Lots of amazing preservation of painted walls which can be seen in the “Mural Room.” No photos allowed inside either place. Then, a Native American artist painted a duplication of the art inside the kiva. The preservation process was painstaking and amazing. Also, a great gift shop which always gets some money from me, usually for books.
I have piddly little things to do today, which I find tiresome. Alas, I’m so thankful for not having to deal with parking issues here, I’m kind of overjoyed. When do you think the other shoe will drop?! 🫣
Happy Tuesday!
That’s good news, indeed 🙂 I’m chuffed for you and the pooch. Sometimes nice things happen to nice people.
Yay for the RV parking! That’s such a thoughtful and wise thing for a hospital to do. And Coronado looked fascinating!
Hooray for RV parking! When you say Coronado, are you talking about the area near San Diego? If yes, I’ve been there although I did not have time to do a walkabout at all (conference and the need to be there).
No, the one I’m speaking of is in New Mexico. I’m a bit flummoxed by the name though…this is an indigenous site that Coronado “discovered” and basically began a systematic decimation of the population. I would think they would name it something else. Nonetheless, it’s an amazing place. In North American we don’t have much in the way of historic places before the coming of the Europeans, so for me, it’s all that more precious.
So happy for you that parking is so happily solved.
What a report, Deva! That RV parking makes so much sense – maybe the whole administration at that place is going to make sense, too. Here’s hope!
What awesome news! May the good things keep coming.
Quite happy to hear you aren’t going to have any issues with parking at your new gig!
SOTD is Eau des Merveilles. This has become another of my favorites.
And you smell marvelous 🥰
Thank you Nina!
Our non-summer continues. I was very excited by sunshine yesterday, there was a cool breeze, but it was warm enough to wear a dress and sandals. Today is back to dull and wet, we’re going to visit my beloved’s mother for a couple of days, and the forecast is for dull and wet there too 🙁 .
I think I’ll wear Fille en Aiguilles for the pine note, which fits well with my idea of the northern climes of Denmark.
So sorry Gaynor!! I really hate non-summers. These days they might be preferable to summers where it’s too hot to go outside? Hard to say.
This morning I sampled Acne Studios par Frederic Malle. I didn’t appreciate it very much. To me it’s quite a departure from the rest of the line, maybe more mainstream? I am not sure what the crowds like. I went to the official website and well, at least the perfumer was honest when she said she was inspired by fabric softener… On the other hand, I LOVE my little bottle of Heaven Can Wait which the sample came with. Another Ellena’s masterpiece 🤍
That’s pretty much how I felt about Outrageous too.
How could a Real perfumer admit to trying for fabric softener? Anyway I too am in an FM, the non-fs Iris Poudre.
Yay for Heaven Can Wait! I love it more and more. I’ve shared my bottle with my mother and now she loves it too.
It’s beautiful!
Ew, a perfume inspired by fabric softener? Hard pass for me!
I’m not very Denmark today, I suppose, in Shalimar MI. (I’m going back through the bottles I didn’t have with me in Europe…that could take all year, I suppose.) I’m not sure this is one I’d ever associate with Denmark or Danes, but I DO love the country and their design.
Yesterday I pulled Tauer Les Annees 25 off my small bottle tray, and man do I wish I’d have snagged a FB of that one. Oh well.
They grow irises in Denmark so you’re good to go today!
I wish I had snagged it also!
I treated myself to some Aedes samples, so today I’m trying Amnesia Rose on one wrist and POAL on the other for comparison. The AR is much rosier, with a blooming deep red rose note and toned-down patchouli note, whereas the POAL is more of a dried, potpourri rose note is a big fresh patch note.
Tea today is F&M Wedding tea.
Ooh, I love their wedding tea – wonder whether I still have any.
Amnesia Rose sounds lovely!
I like it. I had tried it once before in a store and it didn’t make an impression on me, but I probably had three other samples on at the same time.
I know you like patchouli frags. How do like patch + rose?
I have a couple full bottles of patch + rose perfumes, so I like that combo too!
8″ of snow where I am – very beautiful. My lower back is registering just a small complaint, which I expected after a couple sessions of driveway shoveling. I did not have to go anywhere, but TBH I had a sense of pride about not shutting down. That, along with knowing that the fresh, fluffy snow is the easiest to shovel, got Mr. Mossy and me out early yesterday. This morning, I wrangled the plow ridge at the bottom of the driveway, which happily still had very little ice. Temps are going to be very cold here, with single digits at night! I will probably go out tomorrow, but will see how the streets are and will stay close to home. Our county’s schools closed up again today. Cristalle edp is a most excellent scent under a down coat while out in the snow, sez me. 😸
Keep warm, very wise not to venture out too far tomorrow.
Come to think of it, even itsname sounds rather wintry
Very smart to shovel now before it’s packed down and icy! Stay warm.
Cristalle edp is wonderful in cold weather.
Good on you and Mr. Mossy! We got a few inches of snow in NJ and I uncharacteristically shoveled even though I had no plans to leave the comfort of my house!
Well done on shoveling before your snow turned into “Sierra Cement”!
I’m looking at single digit temps here tonight, too. 🥶🥶🥶
Frozen mango and yogurt smoothie
Take care in the snow American friends dealing with it. We’re expecting some later this week. Today it was Kenzo Flower l’elixir and tonight to follow on my Caron resolution it’s Farnesiana, so edible but not in a sugar way.
Also that sounds like a good progression from day to night, Aurora.
Almost never hear about Farnesiana these days.
Thank you Robin, they both were lovely in their own way. Yes, Farnesiana is not in the line-up of the recently re-released scents at Caron,
I dug out an old decant of Lorenzo Villoresi Teint de Neige because I was recently reminded of it when I wore Arquiste Venice Rococo. Gosh, this smells so nice. It’s incredibly powdery and pleasant to wear. I think it was one I could mostly appreciate but didn’t really want to wear back when I first got it. Now I think I’m more in the mood for this type of powder bomb perfume. Amazing what 10+ years will do. 😉
And you can’t beat it for the seasonal name…
Right! No snow of any kind in Seattle yet, but it’s definitely a perfect winter, snowy day perfume.
Yay for TdN!
I’m wearing Perfumer H Dust, which felt like “too much” in warmer weather but is perfect for the current arctic chill, like a thick comfy cashmere sweater.
Mmm, you smell great. I really like Dust.
I bought it in London last January! I think this line is becoming a little easier to find in the US…certain scents, at least. But the thrill of visiting her shops in London is still with me!
It being a London souvenir makes it even better! I do wish they’d offer an extensive sample set. I don’t usually like to spend a lot on those, but for this brand I think I would.
Some perfumes are definitely seasonal. Sounds like Dust is one of them.
Yes! It’s an iris and amber scent and it feels a little too opaque and even a touch masculine in warm weather, but in cold weather, it’s quite different somehow! Warm and soft and all-enveloping, and the iris comes through more.
I am systematically wearing each of my now-catalogued full bottles and the one that came to hand today was Cuir de Lancôme. Lovely stuff. Decants and samples are going to have to get worked in around the edges, but I am determined to give everything a fair wearing in the course of about this next year. What a fun little project!
I’m doing the same project and having a lot of fun with it so far. Today is FM Iris Silver Mist which I’m going to let double for Denmark.
Cuir de Lancome is gorgeous!!
I’m wearing PG Indochine 25 again. It even works for the CP due to the cardamom note, as I’ve read that along with other Scandinavian countries, the Danish also often use cardamom in baking.
Yearly mammogram done and ENT visit went relatively well. AND I ran some errands topped off with a delicious peanut butter milkshake per allo’s recommendation. Dentist tomorrow, and eye appt sometime in January. Then maybe I can avoid doctors for a bit.
Wow, I’m truly impressed! I need someone like you to organize my life for me as I’m always putting off all those important appointments.
Yay for a celebratory milkshake!
Glad to hear that your appointments today went well.
Smelling good again today😉
SOTD = 4160 Tuesdays Buns ‘n’ Roses EDP
Fresh rose and baked goods so yummy and so good!
https://www.instagram.com/p/DEioqMhRYfo/?igsh=MW83YW54bzF3ZXI4NQ==
I’m behind in my January Joy Box sampling and will be catching up shortly.
In other news, resolutions, perfume or otherwise …
– low buy (perfumes)
– 39 good deeds (so I saw this as a what to do to “honor” a recently departed former president and while I have no opinions whatsoever on this person, I like the idea of being able to count good deeds)
– now that I have somewhat recorded my full year spending for 2024, I will use the data to inform on what I should do next financially. I have no worries whatsoever but I do want to simplify.
– I’m sure I have a few more but these are top of mind
Bun’s ‘n’ Roses made me laugh!
Cute kitteh in your Insta today!
And I also got a chuckle out of “Buns’n’Roses”. No earworm from it yet, though.
It’s cold here for Texas and one sign of it is having four cats attempting to be piled on my lap all at once. I’m amused by how one will simply plop down on the others until they’re all stacked up in a pile but nobody seems to mind another cat sitting on their head as long as it’s warm.
Today I found some samples that I had mislaid (an all too common occurrence in my house) and I’m trying out Zoologist Cockatiel, which I don’t even remember ordering. It’s a truly odd scent that is somehow winning me over the longer it’s sitting on my hands. It’s sweet and powdery with a rhubarb note and a lot of something else which I guess is mimosa. It smells like something very familiar and nostalgic.
I also found my samples of Perris Monte Carlo and will be comparing a couple of their scents soon. It’s a contest between Mandarino and Arancia di Sicilia. I recall trying them before and much preferring one over the other but can’t recall which was the winner. I think I need to find them in a store somewhere so I can do a better job of spraying and giving them skin time.
Cockatiel also has raspberry and that might be the mystery note in the mix.
I would love to find the Perris Monte Carlo line at a store so I could properly smell them all.
Loved your description of “kitty Tetris” taking place on your lap!
It snowed here! It snowed here! It FINALLY snowed here! Looks like I got around 3 inches. I think the high temp was around 27 degrees F. Not bad!
And of course, today was the day I decided to take down the outdoor Xmas lights. Fortunately for me, my deck is very sheltered. Didn’t have any snow to deal with, and I layered up before my task. Also made sure to wear some gloves.
Then I stayed inside to do a couple loads of laundry. Cleaning my car off is a task for another day.
SOTD = Tauer PHI – Une Rose de Kandahar, from The Sample Stash. Twins with Robin today! And this time I am getting apricot and rose from PHI. The previous sample I had was all tobacco on me. Much happier with this one!
I’m glad you finally got some snow Jalapeno!
Thanks lillyjo! Folks here have been praying for snow. This is a decent start to getting rid of the drought.
⛄️ yay!
Whoo hoo! ❄️☃️
Hey twin!!
My tree is still up, sorry to say it will probably be up for at least another week, possibly two. Good thing I didn’t put any lights outside, they’d be there til Spring 😉
I would liked to have kept the lights up longer, but didn’t want a NastyGram from the rental office. It’s rather gloomy now that everything’s been packed away.
Ah, that’s too bad. Awfully gloomy here too this afternoon so happy to have the tree lit up inside.
Also glad you got snow! It’s a relief when you finally get some type of precipitation. (Words I never thought I’d ever have to say, myself).
Thanks Gail! December here was scary dry. Hoping that January and February make up for it. 🤞🤞🤞
It’s been a hectic day.
About a year ago I bought some bbw products in Black Cherry Merlot. Today I finally took them out to use. The best perfume match I could find was LPRN Couture, which I love. I really don’t have any Cherry centered perfumes. I have a few body mists but didn’t feel like wearing them.
Do you like the Black Cherry Merlot stuff you have?
I do because they don’t smell cough syrupy.
That’s why I am nervous about cherry anything. I can’t shake the association with cough syrup. Plus it seems that cherry, cranberry, and blackberry notes do not play nice with me.
Haven’t tried stuff with raspberry or blueberry yet.
No points, i wore Covet, just because…
got a new haircut, i let my pixie grow out and now i have a short bob.
No points for me either; I was in Livre Blanc today.
