Friday scent of the day 12/27

Posted by Robin on 27 December 2024 142 Comments

It's Friday! Plus, National Fruitcake Day, the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness, the third day of Christmas, the third night of Hanukkah, and the second day of Kwanzaa. Our community project for today is Best of 2024...wear your favorite new release of the year, or your favorite purchase of the year, or the fragrance you wore the most in 2024, or interpret this project however you like. (We've done this project several times.)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Shortly I'm going to put on my second purchase for 2024, Tauer Perfumes Heraud.

Reminder: on 1/3, wear a fragrance to match Mocha Mousse, Pantone's color of the year for 2025.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wearing no 5 edt. Lyric and no 5 are my most worn perfumes this year. Lyric is too beautiful to waste on my job.

Worthy or not, I never wanted to let my best perfumes become associated with work.

Oddly enough, I will sometimes wear my fanciest, Rich Lady scent to work to counter the quotidian. I do have a tray of Office Scents, though, so I usually wear something pleasant and innocuous.

My SOTD Friday was Chanel No 5 EdT as well, Dawn. I bought a partial bottle of the vintage juice, just to remind me of my Mom, who walked around in a cloud of it. It *might* be my last perfume buy of 2024, but I’m sure I’ll succumb to some deal I can’t resist before year’s end, though it’s unlikely to be a new release or a brand new bottle. I am the queen of partial bottles. Cheaper and more than I’ll probably ever finish anyway. I’m too fickle to have a fave perfume buy of 2024 or most-worn scent as I’m always changing, but my happiest swap was for Dzongkha, which I’ve craved for a long time and wore a lot during the summer heat when its mineral coolness was almost magical in cooling me off. One of my resolutions for 2025 is to pull out all my winter holiday perfumes in late November and plant them on the mirrored gold metal tray I bought for exactly that purpose so I have them at hand to grab and spritz because sometimes I am too lazy or hurried to search.

I’m wearing my favorite perfume from the 2024 releases I’ve tried: Serge Lutens La Fille Tour de Fer.

It opens with a peppery rose — spicy and vibrant — before transforming into a lovely fruity lipstick rose. The name suggests something cold and unyielding, but the scent tells a different story. While there’s a faint metallic note at the opening, it soon softens into a cheerful, pretty floral. It’s not a complex fragrance, but it’s a pleasure to wear.

After writing all this, I checked the copy on SL’s website. Apparently, “Tour de Fer” is a nod to the Eiffel Tower! My mind had wandered to a medieval setting — a cold beauty perched atop an iron tower. Instead, this perfume is about a rebellious, modern Parisian girl. Well, that certainly makes more sense, though I don’t find anything particularly edgy or daring about it.

And if I were to pick the color for this rose, it would be hot pink or dark pink. Something like this:

I agree with your idea; LFTdF is a that-shade-of-pink perfume. Knowing you like it so well, I am going to pay more attention to it on the next test. I am not a rose person, and I thought upon first sniff that it was a classy, quality rose, but not much to it.

Edgy is a scarce commodity in perfume these days — even with Uncle Serge 🙂

I am fine with bright and cheerful. 🙂 This perfume just does not feel ‘rebellious’ to me (unless extraverted and excitable is considered rebellious nowadays), so I think this part of the copy is a miss.

A very thoughtful review, Glannys! Thank you. Makes me want to try it. I wonder if it might be the Paris version of La Fille de Berlin, which I really liked, even though there wasn’t anything edgy or challenging. Just cheerful prettiness.

I have three favorite purchases of the year, but at the top of that list is Profumum Roma Ambra Aurea — such a simple yet gorgeous set of notes. It’s blending well with my morning coffee, and might work for next week’s CP also. Robin, sounds like your selection for today would also work for next week’s CP, with all that cocoa.

Another great photo Robin! I think I’ve been drawn to these colorful photos because it has been SO gray here. For weeks! Ugh. I’m holding onto hope though because I know the days are getting longer.🌞
I’m scentless currently because I have a massage this morning, then I’ll be in my favorite perfume from this year: Element 79 from Beauty Pie. I first tried this as part of a sampler set and when they released it in full bottle I instantly bought one. Should have gotten a backup because now it’s gone from their website. This has notes of fig, orris, orange flowers, sandalwood, patchouli and vanilla. It is so good.☺️

I guess several of us are in the Midwest Winter greys. After living here for almost 35 years, I know to turn on more lights in the house, and get outside on sunny days no matter how bitter cold the temperatures are! But yes, we are having a long stretch of grey and wet.

My favorite new scent of 2024 is Anatole Lebreton’s Grimoire, rather dense smoky incense which seems perfect for these short days of winter before the light starts to come back. I am surprised I like it as much as I do- and I foresee a FB of this in my future when the sample I gone is gone. It is like La Liturgie des Heures, after a series of disasters, came back still contemplative, but darker and stronger. It’s oddly very soothing.

The repairman is here to replace the water pump in my dishwasher! Not the present I was planning on buying myself for the New Year, but after years of no dishwasher, getting my little Bosch 18 incher was such a game changer for me! And having it break the week before Christmas was not the most fun! But the repair guy (nice family man in looks and manner) and his apprentice (diffident due to circumstances but slightly aware that he is cute cute cute) are working away and I sm trying not to hover!

No CP for me because I’ve been wearing all my CSPs in order (for no reason but my own pleasure) and today I’m in the last one, the charming Vanille Pineapple. I’ll spend the last four days of December in my four favourite chypres, which seems like a nice way to round out the year.

They do! Vanille Ylang in particular seems like something they could do well.

I used to have a decant of Vanille Pitahaya but that’s long gone. There used to be a Vanille Rose, which I never got to try, and we all know how well vanilla and rose go together.

I’d have to say that my favorite purchase this year was Myrrhe 55 from Le Labo, one of their limited edition September-only city perfumes. I had wanted it last year, when it was new, and finally sprang for a small bottle this year. It also seems to have pushed me into a larger investigation of myrrh as a note (nicely seasonal at Christmastime, right?), and after trying it earlier last year I also bought myself a bottle of TF Myrrhe Mystere from an online seller at a good (so to speak) price as a Christmas gift. That’s another favorite already. Then I bought something from Luckyscent and asked for myrrh fragrances as my free samples and this morning I’m trying out two of them. Neither is likely to go on my list for subsequent FB purchases. One, Headspace Myrrhe, is much too cedar-y, and the other, Pierre Guillaume Collection Myrrhiade, is spoiled for me by a strong licorice note. (If you like licorice, though, you might like this one.) They also sent me a sample of Wazamba, which I have not tried yet. (I’ve tried it before but don’t remember much about it.)

I am frankly glad, and will be gladder, to get past the holiday season, which has just been a big struggle for me this year. Two cancer deaths of people close to me and Mom is not doing very well.

I’m reunited with my traveling box of perfumes so I have many choices. It’s quite crisp where I’m at now with highs maybe squeaking to the upper 40’s or lower 50’s. But the sun is blasting down with all the power of a ray gun from a 1950’s sci-if movie so it’s lovely. Parked by a small lake that apparently sees a lot of migratory waterfowl so when I’m done with coffee we’ll go for a little walk about.

I’m at a state park just for the convenience and location, but got two knocks on my door before 9am this morning because the office is run by two lovely old geezers who don’t know how to work the computer system. Think Grumpy Old Men except they’re not grumpy. I’m playing the grumpy part, as I usually do! Same winter hat with the furred flaps to cover the ears, bulky gloves, heavy duty state park winter bomber jacket… like we’re in the remote backcountry in -10F weather. Same grizzled, grey, creased faces. It’s uncanny.

Because SherriG has mentioned it so frequently in the past few weeks and because it’s one of my favorites, I’m going with Profvmvm Ambra Aurea today.

Thanks for the kind comments yesterday. I’m in recovery mode and the only person I want any dealings with in my Baby T-Rex. Her enthusiasm and joy for life never fails to delight me.

I hope everyone has a great day!

I’ve been collecting fragrances for many years and am quite sated with my collection, so I buy very little these days. But earlier this year I made a small purchase of a coffret of scents, while not new to 2024, were new to me: SL Collection Noire miniatures, consisting of La Fille de Berlin, Nuit de Cellophane, L’Orpheline, and Amber Sultan. I also received samples of Ecrin de Fumee and Dans Le Bleue Qui Petille.

Jessica’s 2014 NST review of L’Orpheline in which she said ‘the fragrance feels like a worthy complement to a rainy autumn afternoon’ prompted this to be my SOTD choice for today’s cp, as our late December weather – temps near 50F. and rain, drizzle, clouds for days on end – feels much more like late autumn than winter. When I look outside my window, instead of snow and ice I see lots of brown, hibernating grass, decaying leaves, and leftover garden detritus, and the incense/musk/patchouli perfectly mirrors what I see. Yes, it is sad and austere, but as someone who enjoys being in harmony with Nature no matter what She brings, I find it to be a very comforting scent, and I know that some of that detritus is providing food and shelter for birds and other creatures, especially for the cold snow and ice that I know will be here soon.

Looking forward to tonight’s folk 🎶 concert benefitting local food pantries; for once, I actually enjoyed grocery shopping, choosing items to bring tonight that will hopefully make life a little easier for those less fortunate than me. Tomorrow is Catmas Day: we’re taking our cats’ Auntie out for a seafood dinner, and our 2 sisters 😻😻 (+our last adopted 😻) will be exchanging 🎁 🎁 with their 2 brothers 😸😸who live with Auntie. (Not too spoiled! 😇😇😇😇😇)

Hope everyone is able to relax and enjoy the last few days of the year with all good things to come in 2025!🥳

After wearing Réminiscence Tonka some days ago I retrieved Commodity Tonka from the back of the wardrobe, so that’s what I wore today and tonight it’s Messe de Minuit. I don’t think I bought any 2024 release but my favorite discovery of the year has been Devotion, hands down, I bought in spring I think.

Wearing Angelique Noire and its 2024-ness is due to the fact that it is housed in the 2024 reinterpretation of Guerlain’s flacon Sac. Very happy to have it and did not care about the cost.

I have a lot of candidates for “best of 2024” but I think the knocked-my-socks-off purchase was Guidance 46 but it is too potent for the low key day I am having so pinch hitter Day Three Escándalo, another 2024 find, is my SOTD.

Most worn new purchase for 2024 is Obvious Une Vanille, such an easy reach and always comfortable.

Now I am on the get-nagging-tasks done part of my time off. I did take a walk – beautiful outside, 75 and sunny.

I am not sure I have words for this one. I get a fruity floral that seems very fresh but not juvenile sweet and has a bit of amber/wood in it as well. It reminds me a little of the feeling I got from Delina and it is a Quentin Bisch creation as well. I had tried the original Guidance and didn’t think it was all that. I got a sample of Guidance 46 mainly wondering about the rose note, since I was testing rose scents and decided I need something WITH rose but not so rose-centric. It is more feminine but I think a man could wear it.

I was walking outside with my mother yesterday and she picked up the vestige of Guidance on my sweater from a week prior, exclaimed about the fresh floral smell. My mother NEVER picks up on perfume.

SOTD = Filigree & Shadow Tell Me About the Forest (You Once Called Home)

I’m glad I saw that it was a water perfume so did not have to take a second look at the white color! It is one of my newest and my first time wearing it. It’s a lovely green 💚 perfume, not overwhelming and probably won’t last long, just perfect for my dinner out with family!

I included one of my latest purchases from the MOMA Design Store. It is an “hoptimist” although I have absolutely no clue what it is (I will google). It looks so cute and also comes in a different color aesthetic!

I went with Arquiste Venice Rococo for the CP today. I don’t think I’ve spent enough time with any 2024 releases to have a true favorite new release, but this one is very nice. If they put out a travel spray, I’d probably buy it. Others from 2024 I’ve worn this week are Comete, Marissa Zappas Carnival of Souls (really liked the sample and immediately bought a travel spray during her recent sale), Scents of Wood Apricot in Cognac and Mycelium in Chestnut, and Scent Trunk Starlight Sesame. Other notables are Papillon Epona and Hiram Green Tryst and Philtre. I’m curious what fun new discoveries 2025 will bring.

Staying in tonight since it’s supposed to be really rainy but tomorrow I’m excited to go see Nosferatu. Not sure yet what perfume I’ll choose to wear to the movie. Any suggestions? Carnival of Souls could be the ticket even if it is based on a different movie. 😉

I am not quite sure where I got my sample of Fumerie Turque. So, I may be departing from my goal of wearing favorites from the generosity of NST’ers. But it certainly is a favorite of 2024 purchases as in, Merry Christmas to me, and an enabler badge to the one who gifted the sample to me! Robin – did you do a mini-review for Heraud? Anyone who’s tried it, I’d like to read your reaction. I’ve been using some restraint since about mid-year, so I did not do my usual rush to buy the latest Taur. 🙂

I’ve tried Heraud. It’s a mostly non-gourmand chocolate with something that reads as incense to me. There is a sweet cocoa opening note, though. Definitely something for cold weather.

I’m debating about getting a FB.

Yes, very incensey and I also get a leather note, but that might just be me. Very intense and strong with that typical “Tauerade” underpinning. To me the chocolate is very dark and unsweet, almost bitter, but I’m also not a chocolate person except for See’s mint patties, and even then I go for the milk chocolate ones. Actually I was trying to buy a box of the dark chocolate ones for my son, who loves them, and they were sold out at 3 Sees stores, the clerks said it’s companywide, the brand is having trouble sourcing peppermint oil. Another global warming/supply chain crack in our world.

Unfortunately, I decided not to even try Heraud on skin because I could smell some of the white florals he uses emanating from the my decant when it arrived. Sadly, Tauer’s white floral notes singe my nostrils, irritating my nasal passage terribly. This is what happened when I tried his Sotto la Luna Tuberose years back. This problem with his white florals seems to be a me problem though, as most others don’t report this. In Heraud I can detect some gourmand notes but it didn’t read as cocoa/chocolate as I was hoping for.

I’ll be swapping or giving away my decant at some point.

It started off bright and sunny here, but clouds rolled in as the day went on. They’re just sitting there, glowering. Sheesh! If I am getting cloudy weather, the least they could do is drop some moisture.

Had several contenders for today, but I should have picked the perfume I wanted to wear rather than one that was CP compliant. The scent that was calling my name loudest was a release from 2022.

SOTD = Fzotic POOF! I purchased a travel spray of this on/around Black Friday and it arrived a week later than its ETA. Tracking shows that it took a slight detour to Missouri before showing up on my doorstep. I *loved* it back in September and early October. It will probably be gorgeous again in the Spring. POOF! doesn’t seem to be happy about being out and about in Winter.

More like POOF! pouted and sulked all day. Just didn’t fit with the weather.

Yeah, still desperately need moisture here. It’s down to “Serious” drought from “Extreme” where I am at. There’s been no snow to speak of, which is typically how precip falls this time of year. Not a whole lot of rain either. December 2024 might end up being the 5th or 6th warmest in history.

OTOH, 3/4 of Colorado has gotten a decent amount of snow so far this Winter.

The grocery store is absolutely horrifying. And what makes it worse is that it’s just pure greed and price gouging. The last four years have made me so jaded and disgusted with money hungry corporations, CEO’s, shareholders, private equity firms, ad nauseum. “Sales” are an absolute joke.

Deva, all of these prices are killing me! My car and home owners insurance went way up. I was able to shop around but it’s still ridiculous. My wages in no way have kept up. Throw in the groceries and I burst into tears in my heart. When I see people loading their carts up I want to ask them how are they doing it?!
I do indeed though, smell very nice.

One of the main reasons I sold my house is because even though the mortgage was almost paid off, the home owners insurance was more than the mortgage, and going up substantially every year. I see more and more people living out of cars everywhere. I was just reading about a guy who was a restaurant manager and at age 26 got kicked off his parents insurance. He had been type I diabetic (insulin dependent) since childhood. He made 35,000 a year, health insurance was over 450 per month and deductible was 7500. Insulin was astronomical. He started rationing his insulin and within a very short while, he was dead. And sadly, this is NOT unusual. I’m beginning to hate this country and all it f*cked-up-ed-ness. I can totally understand your “tears in my heart” comment. I hear about things like this and I’m torn between bursting into tears as well or starting a revolution. Hope that not too political…😬

I don’t get any jasmin. I looked at the notes and it shows orange blossom.
I get cinnamon, stewed fruits and the amber plus a powdery vanilla. This is only my second wearing and I am still getting to know it. I saw somebody compared it to Armani Code, and I smell no resemblance. I think they only said that because of the orange blossom. I get some orange but more like a cooked rind than a flower.

SOTD and best of the year is Byredo Mohave Ghost.

Way back in February this wonderful hive of fragrance lovers made some excellent recommendations for a new scent for me. I’m still exploring but the one that was love at first spritz and stayed on my mind for weeks afterwards was Mohave Ghost. (Thank you SheriG!)

I must have been a VERY good girl because Santa brought me both the edp and body cream for Christmas. I was so shocked and thrilled it brought me to tears.

Wearing it feels both exotic and intoxicating yet quiet and comfortable. I’m in love!
