Thursday scent of the day 12/5

Posted by Robin on 5 December 2024 114 Comments

It's Thursday and Repeal Day, plus World Soil Day. Happy 89th birthday to Calvin Trillin! (And yes, he's still writing.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I meant to try something new this morning, but instead I'm in my trusty old combo of Diptyque Philosykos and Diptyque Tam Dao.

Reminder: 12/6 will be Plus One Friday...wear your favorite layering combination, or try a brand new one. (We've done variations on this project before.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’ve named today’s layering “Snowstorm Survival Kit” (or “Set,” if you prefer the alliteration). The name was inspired by Robin’s remark that you could survive a snowstorm in Angel Muse.
The scents I chose are Angel Muse, By the Fireplace, and Lune Feline.

Angel Muse and By the Fireplace pair wonderfully—a cozy combination for staying indoors on a winter day. However, I can barely detect Lune Feline; it’s completely overpowered by the other two. I think I’ll need to find something else to achieve the perfect balance.

I’ve had a lot of ideas for this CP, and only one day is left. So I’ll share them here, in case someone wants inspiration.

In the Land of Memo: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Tiger’s Nest + Winter Palace

Joys of Jasmine: Patou Joy + Jasmin et Cigarette + La Route d’Emeraude (centered around Joy, you can try different jasmine scents here).

Study in Scarlet: Tabac Rouge + Habit Rouge + Mon Nom est Rouge

Wine Cellar: Serge Lutens Chêne + Cuir Velours + Or du Serail

None are tested, so I do not guarantee they will work.
I also have several ideas for ‘Winter Forest’, but it’s 6 possible combinations.

I’m surprised I have not tried them together myself. Maybe I have, but it was a long time ago? I feel like Tiger’s Nest may overpower Winter Palace, but you never know. Give it a try!

I found my Tiger’s Nest but have to look for Winter Palace. The two bottles that are prominently displayed are Sintra and Flam.

What wonderful ideas you have, and what clever titles, too! I love the sound of the Rouge one and also I am sure I’d love to try a piled up jasmine mix! Thank you for sharing.
I have some Baccarat Rouge and might try it with Santa Blush…. trying to think what else I have that’s “rouge”.

Yes, you can do a lot with “red” perfumes. I think black/noir also has a great layering potential.

Glannys, you have a real gift not only for coming up with interesting layering combos but also in brilliantly describing them, giving us interesting history and details, and explaining why the combos work and even offering alternatives based on similar notes. Gold Star to you!
Jalapeno, if you read this, pls. contact me and I can send you a bit of Cher Uninhibited. (denise aaaattt denisehamilton dawt commmmmmmmm). Daniel, I’ll be curious to know what you think of it too.
Hera, I’m with you on half your SOTD. I’m in Rahat Loukhoum from Uncle Serge, from a rollerball received in an NST swap. Love this and it’s perfect for chilly semi-desert mornings and pale light of L.A. in winter.

I’m wearing Rochas Absolu today. If I remember correctly this is one of the several scents I bought in an effort to duplicate the feel of Theorema after I found out it was discontinued and before I was able to acquire some backup of Theorema. After what is on me a somewhat overheated opening it has settled into the sweet orange (with other things my nose refuses to recognize) I wanted from it. Very comforting on a winter day.

Interesting, did not think of it as a viable dupe and should try it again.

Then again, I have enough Theorema to last me .

Not so sure it’s really a dupe (though I wanted it to be) but they do share a few notes, the most noticeable for me being the orange (or mandarin or tangelo), but also orange blossom, pepper, rose and benzoin. On me at least Absolu is louder (especially in the top notes), less elegant, and less complex but a lot of fun. Theorema in spite of its plethora of notes feels to me more restrained, more refined, sparer.

Today is the last day off before I return to work tomorrow. In ways, I am not looking forward to going back to work but in some ways I am. I have been off for 3 and a half weeks. Heard thundersnow late last night and haven’t heard that in forever.

Wearing Lyric today on my last day of being off work.

Sephora sent me an email of 20% off everything and that starts tomorrow. If you shop Candle Day at Bath and Body Works, Candle Day starts tomorrow evening if you are a rewards member. I think the price is $9.95 for the 3 wick candles.

Another gorg day here but a bit cooler, which is wonderful. I’m still surfing the Sample Sea and today it’s Montalé Amber Musk. On Fragrantica, reviews are all over the spectrum- “smells like Elmer’s glue” to “very niche, even for a niche.” Honestly the reviews are making my day! I find it very wearable, vaguely floral in a “not a real flower” way and perfectly uninspiring. 😃

Managed to get to a physical beading store the other day and currently working on a new project inspired once again by my admiration of the French folks easy chic sartorial mastery. It’s going to be fabulous when done but it’s a lot of beading. 😅 My Stained Glass bracelet is about half done but I don’t have access to my regular beading supplies right now. It was such a treat to go into a store and see everything in person. I could drop a LOT of money there!

Did you hear about BC/BS? They are no longer covering for anesthesia that goes beyond the “normal” time for any surgery…😂 Because we all know every single surgery is uncomplicated and typical. I kid you not, the hospital and insurance industry will be the death of America.

Did not hear about that. My daughter works for Wellmark, which is an independent licensee of BC/BS. It is in South Dakota and Iowa. She doesn’t work with anything in coverage so didn’t know about it.

They deny far too many things to list because they employ software that automatically declines coverage for thousands of things, including things they state aren’t medically necessary. I guess we have to get ready for surgery without adequate anesthesia if you happen to be a complicated case. ☠️

I rarely layer but I do love to put Perles de Lalique on one wrist and Theo Fennell Scent on the other.

They are both rosy; Perles is just on the edge of being a bit harsh; Scent’s saffon voluptuousness borders on cloying and dull. So I can’t relax into either one on its own, but together they balance each other out.

Does anyone else here love either or both of these perfumes?

Still continuing my fruity chypre theme with Arquiste Ella, I don’t think I would wish to layer this with anything else in the fruity chypre line, so it’s flying solo.

Yesterday, I found out that it will probably be impossible to extend my contract. I knew chances were slim at best, but I had ki d of pushed away that thought. Time to face facts.

I’m no good with layering. (I also don’t have my full perfume collection at my disposal, it’s true, but it’s also a pretty small collection, I think.)

I did start today with Sienne l’hiver and then tonight put on Felanilla, but there’s basically no overlap.

Trying to think what I can do with what I have here for tomorrow, but I’m not having any brainwaves. Maybe I’ll get creative in the morning?

At any rate, my collection increased by 4 last weekend, when I went to Nicolaï in Paris. (Also went to ELdO but wasn’t in love with anything I didn’t already own.) What I love about Nicolaï was that I was able to get out with a coffret of the gourmands and a 30 ml, and it didn’t break the bank. (Now, my scarf purchases were a different matter… 🙂 ) It was a fun weekend. Now I have to deal with the looming reality of moving home…sigh.

I liked Pavlova best, surprisingly. I thought Saint Honore would win, and I’m not usually taken with a pineapple note, but Pavlova was very nicely done and the pineapple works for me. Anyway, I thought all three were nice, and the coffret made it a no-brainer.

      Ooh, iris layering sounds fun.

There are so many jasmine scents that you can definitely build something even without Joy. Something more low-key might even work better, since big “diva” perfumes tend to overpower other fragrances.

SOTD = layering of L’Occitane Immortelle de Corse and Sonoma Scent Studio Forest Walk

Lovely combination with 6 sprays of the immortelle and approximately 3 sprays of Forest Walk.

Lambchop seems to be the way to go for the doggos! My sister’s Havanese has a “lamby”, not quite the Lambchop but close enough.

I gave my dog a lambchop. He chewed it up in about a week.

I remember the OG Lamb Chop puppet on TV. Shari Lewis used to make guest appearances on various shows with Lamb Chop.

I stayed home all day. The snow stopped but I didn’t really want to get out. I did manage to finally reorganize my perfumes. They are neat and orderly now. I have 4 bottles that have gone off. I put them in a drawer to probably dispose of another time.
Sotd is Coco edp. My favorite of the iterations. I don’t wear it as much because the sprayer is bad.

Ugh, I really need to reorg too. My vintage bottles got out of control this year.

A couple questions, lillyjo: how much snow do you have now, and which perfumes went off? Inquiring minds, and all that.

They said on the news that in the past week we have had 15.5 inches of snow in my immediate area. Last night’s storm only gave us about 3 but the blowing and flash freeze made everything bad. The larger surrounded area got about 15 overnight.
        My gone off perfumes are
Cristalle edt, Gucci Envy, EL Beyond Paradise and EL Dazzling Gold. I’ve tried spraying them out a bunch in case it was the sprayer but they all smell not good to awful. I’m pretty sad about it.

Oh no! The Cristalle and the Envy must really hurt. 😢

I was checking prices on Chanel’s US website last night for No. 19. Ouch!

The old school Cristalle EdT did not have a great shelf life…I threw away many bottles before they were drained, back in the day.

If you want some more Cristalle EDT, I’m happy to send you a decant in a good quality bottle that I haven’t had any evaporation issues with yet. Just send me an email – my NST username at Gmail.

During the Black Friday frenzy, I didn’t factor in the fact that brands like Papillon would sell out quickly. Oh well, better for the budget🙂

I had a doctor’s visit this morning so I’ve been commando. Just an annual physical exam, but I haven’t gotten one in many many years, so I was a little anxious and also had a list of concerns I wanted to bring up. There’s just an ultrasound I need to get done and of course blood work for things like cholesterol. I think I’ll wait another week past Thanksgiving for that one! 😆

I’m feeling pretty worn, so no experimenting with any layers today. I think I’ll choose Indochine to wind down my day.

Another gorgeous late Autumn day here. Temps were perfect; right around 50 or so. Didn’t need a jacket for afternoon errands. But it was a cold start to the day.

Figuring out what I will need to get for hanging Xmas lights outside. There’s a trip to a hardware or big box retailer in my near future for the stuff I need.

SOTD = the last of my sample of Feu Secret. Thunk! Wearing it with Pink Grapefruit & Aloe body butter from Bliss.

Also I love the smell of pink grapefruit but not really aloe. Do they smell pretty good together?

The Bliss body butter just smells of sweet pink grapefruit to me. No aloe that I can detect.
