Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, late November 2024

Posted by Robin on 23 November 2024 191 Comments

marigold-garland

It's finally the weekend — and perhaps, the last bit of calm before the holiday storm. We're relaxing with our standard open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance that helps you keep calm despite various holiday hassles, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

I’m wearing Onda Voile this morning. I woke up with an earworm of “Famous Blue Raincoat” in my head and I’m trying to drown it out with some Queen. Also I saw that Alice of “Alice’s Restaurant” fame has died. It’s almost time for my annual play of the album.

I’m easing back into perfume today with my dirty hippie rollerball of patchouli and lavender essential oils. It’s been my bedtime scent but it’s perfect for today, as I come to you sans gallbladder.
My surgery was yesterday morning and I think it went quite well. I have no baseline as this was my first surgery ever in my 56 years. Thank you all so much for your kind words last week. skalolazka, if you’re reading thank you so much for the guided imagery suggestion. I didn’t purchase the one you linked to but found one on Spotify and listened to it in the days leading up to surgery. I also had a meditation playlist ready to go and asked my family not to text me yesterday morning so I could listen to it in pre-op without distractions. My pre op nurse was so wonderful.😊Nurses are just the best. Kanuka, I kept visualizing your description of anesthesia and by the time they wheeled my into the or I was pretty much zen like. Of course the dose of versed didn’t hurt.😉 The last thing I remember was scooching myself onto the or table then it was lights out. I woke up to another nurse asking me how my pain was. I had just a little bit right after surgery that wasn’t too bad (I’ve done labor😅) but they quickly got that under control and I’ve had minimal pain since. The only hiccup was a little emesis after the car ride home. Sorry, probably tmi.
Anyway, I have no plans this weekend other than to kick back in the recliner and let people wait on me.🤣 If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading! Happy Saturday!

I thought of you when they put the scd’s on in pre-op but they were off by the time I woke up in recovery so I didn’t really get to enjoy them.😆

I agree springpansy, but I really feel like the guided meditation helped. I had one brief moment of anxiety the night before but listening to the meditation music in pre op really made me feel calm. It’s the same type of music my massage therapist plays and I just closed my eyes and pictured myself on her table.

Another gorgeous sunny day here and we are shortly heading out for a bit of a walkabout. I’m wearing SmellBent Smoked Ambergris. It’s been a while since I wore this and it’s as lovely and comforting as ever.

Also wearing jeans for the first time in forever. I’ve mostly given them up and replaced them with super comfortable joggers, which were a huge blessing in France because I didn’t have to worry about my pant legs touching the (often times) dirty bathroom floors when using a public restroom.

And for those who have pets, did you know Costco sells pet meds? I had no clue and was furiously trying to locate Simparica Trio for doggo and couldn’t find it anywhere at any veterinarian office hereabouts. Someone suggested Costco and BAM! They had it, and at a great price!! I wish I’d known this years ago.

Robin, I love that photo! The contrast of colors is arresting and beautiful. 😍

Is the medicine a lot cheaper than getting it from the vet? I get it there and think it’s pretty high.

Well, my dog uses the 44-80lb dosage and a six month supply was around 130ish (forget the exact number as I already threw the receipt away) with tax. Simparica Trio is more expensive than others in this care but I love that it’s a heart worm preventative as well as killing fleas and TICKS! Once a month, no other meds needed for parasite prevention. It’s also off label for other types of worms like roundworms and hookworms. The prescription will transfer to any Costco nationwide which is super convenient for me. The price is dose related so if you have a small dog under 44lbs, it’ll be cheaper and if over 80lb it’ll be more expensive.

I pick up Teflon kitty’s asthma inhalers at Costco. The vet I had in NJ suggested I do that, since it was cheaper than the vet’s office.

I copied Robin again yesterday in a spritz of Bois Des Iles. Today I’m wafting No. 22 and planning to get out for a bike ride before it rains.

My routine procedure went well yesterday and I got the “all good” for another 10 years. I might have just had a very good anesthesiologist and/or they’ve developed a better concoction since I had this done 10 years ago but I wasn’t totally wiped out afterward and didn’t sleep the rest of the day away. And most importantly, as planned, I enjoyed 2 shakes, crunchy peanut butter and a double malt chocolate malt😋Nothing like breaking a fast in style!

I wish I’d made it so I could give you the recipe but I bought them at a great burger place near us.

I don’t remember ever having as many chopped peanuts in a peanut butter shake and it was unbelievably good. I’m the person who is always disappointed that peanut butter labeled “crunchy” is rarely crunchy enough for me.

I went with Encre Noire this morning, and it’s very soothing. For the first time (possibly) ever, I’ve finished my Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving, and a mini of vintage Bel Ami is supposed to arrive today, so I’m not sure why I needed soothing. But hey, soothing is always nice.

My fading memory of Bel Ami is a rugged, classic leather chypre. The Vetiver is a much more modernized version, more dandy-ish, but still beautiful. People say they get a “christmas spice” vibe, and I agree with that. The drydown is less sweet, and the leather is more apparent, but still softened.

A cool, cloudy morning here. There’s more than a touch of melancholy in the air – maybe it’s the season. (Or, more likely, it’s just my mood.😊)
Anyway, rather than fight it, I’m embracing it by lying low and listening to early Gordon Lightfoot records. Wearing some vintage Devin, the first fragrance I ever wore.
Hope everyone enjoys the calm before the holiday storms.

Shari, it’s wonderful. (The perfumer is Bernard Chant, who composed many famous fragrances.)
I’m not certain it’s still in production; if it is I’m sure the formula has changed over the years. Fortunately, I have an ample supply of the vintage stuff. If you’re ever curious to try it, drop me a line – I’m happy to share.😊 (Click on my name, and you’ll be directed to my web site, where you’ll find my email address.)

Oh gosh, it’s very kind of you, offering to part with even a drop of that particular precious! I’m also a big fan of Bernard Chant’s work — the OG Aliage was my first self-chosen scent back in the mid-70s (when I knew nothing whatsoever about the people who compose perfumes), and I fell in love with vintage Cabochard after falling down the perfume rabbit hole. But I’m already yearning for more of a few elusive vintage scents and am reluctant to add to the list, so I will content myself with living vicariously through you on this one. Thank you so much for your kindness though!

Been MIA for a few days. My mother is getting over COVID and spread her COVID plague to my dad and I. Got it from her Thursday but I am starting to feel better. This is why I get my jabs. I see my surgeon for my post op appointment on Monday. I will let her know that I cannot take one more day of having a drain since it’s sore. I know that it’s probably too much info but I want a proper shower. Wearing Eau premiere today since I want something a little more soothing.

    The rain is here.
What a lazy morning emailing my sister back and forth as we plan for Zambia in 2025.

She is two weeks and two days post surgery and worked on Thursday so we are glad that is behind us.

I went to an estate sale the other day. I bought a vintage chemise for two dollars.
This beautiful house overlooking the Pacific had everything from Avon and small hats with veils a la Mamie Eishenhower to walkers and a portable commode. Every phase of life.

It made me so glad for all my downsizing and selling these past months.
Post shower I have put on the same hoodie from three days and I smell smoky, vanilla-y, benzoin-y and vetiver-y. To which I will add some Eight & Bob Egypt. Why not.

Off to fill the washing machine.

Estate sales are amazing. An entire lifetime summed up in stuff. Like you, I’m so happy to have downsized. I can’t wait for your trip to Zambia. What month are you going? Is there ever a “cool” season there or is it just hot with a monsoon season thrown in? Is this the trip you’re going to get close to gorillas? Such an exciting trip! ✈️

We are planning to go next December and spend the end of year holidays on a beach facing the Indian Ocean.

It’s a medical mission for my sister, I will join her when she is wrapping up and we will journey onto Vic Falls and Botswana.

No gorillas there, I am afraid. They are up in Uganda & Rwanda.

There are the dry and the wet seasons, also known as brown and green.
My sister hates rain. She is a person who is very much affected by weather and so we are looking at other times, too.

The good news is we can do and go when and where and what we want!!

This is so funny as I just bought my turkey tonight and was worrying about the same thing. I looked it up and it says about 24 hours for every 4 pounds, but it can stay in the refrigerator up to four days after thawed. Some articles said up to 2 days. Anyway, I decided to make mine on Wednesday the cut it up and reheat Thursday. You should be okay.

I slept in until 12:30 today! and had such strange dreams. One involved me being on a train with a handsome fellow and for some reason I was a spy and was translating French and Russian…. Not likely!

My SOTD is Anima Dulcis which exactly fits the season and my mood. The cats have been enjoying some time out on the porch where it is very pleasant today. I’m so happy it’s no longer HOT. What a blessing.

I’m involved in planning some papers for two upcoming conferences that are making me feel very stimulated and energized. I really hope that my knee surgery will improve my mobility so that travel will be less trying. One is in Philadelphia and the other will be in Edmonton, Alberta, with a side trip to Banff and Calgary. Both are next spring.

Hoping that my friend will take me to visit Mom tomorrow. It’s been too long since I’ve been out there.

A friend who is a fabulous cook shared this recipe for me and said these are the best cookies he’s ever made or eaten. Everyone loves them. Pumpkin and maple, what’s not to love? I need to order a new grocery delivery soon and will get the needed ingredients, and make them for Thanksgiving.

I was finishing a bottle of Dolce Vita today, I have a proper vintage bottle waiting and tonight it’s Burberry Brit EDP inspired by ChocolateMarzipan, my bottle is definitely oldish with its small white Burberry checks but BB doesn’t quite qualify for vintagestatus yet.

I had to look up the notes. I always thought it had lavender, and that was the reason I would get headaches from BB. I see peony in there though, which also can trigger a headache for me.

Peony is rose + citrus IIRC, so very common ingredients and not sure it’s the culprit but I bet not all the notes are listed and there might be aroma chemicals in there to which you are especially sensitive. No perfume is worth a headache for sure.

I’m in Heure Exquise today. It’s a bit of a go-to if I’m not sure what to wear; still hoping to thunk it by the end of the year.

Made some chicken thighs in the crockpot. They get finished on the BBQ to get a bit more crispy. The best part is the stock that results after cooking all day with onions, carrots and celery. There will be a delicious soup made for next week since it’s going to get colder out.

Yes, I freeze it until I want to make the soup. I remove all the vegetables (from when it cooked in the crockpot), then remove most of the fat once it’s solidified on top (you can refrigerate it to expedite this). Then freeze it.

It’s a lovely Sunday here and I’ve just been out for an afternoon walk. My broken toe is much better after six weeks, it’s still a bit sensitive in closed shoes, but I’m fine in sandals. Thank goodness it’s not the middle of winter!
I’ve tried a good spray of Arquiste’s new Almond Suede, and it doesn’t appeal to me. However, if you like a suede note, I’d recommend trying this.
While I was in the shop, I also tried The Architect’s Club, which I had tried ages ago. I don’t recall exactly what I thought about it then, but it now reminds me of Guerlain’s Angélique Noire. Given how expensive that Guerlain range is now, that’s a great discovery!

Still commando this morning, but I think I will continue my sandalwood weekend. I want to wear Bois des Îles since allo mentioned it earlier. Unfortunately, it’s at home and I’m not. Will search for another soon.
The last two days, I tried again my samples of Xeroff Richwood and PMC Santal Pacifique. The jury is still out on both. They are opposites in the wearing. Richwood gets better in the drydown, and SdP starts out great, but lacks at the end. Still looking for the best available sandalwood-centric scent. Suggestions are welcome!

I’m so glad to hear you mention L’Artisan Santal. It was my first fragrance and my signature fragrance for several years.

I didn’t even know at the time that it was a sandalwood fragrance per se. I knew nothing, other than that I loved the scent. I was shocked when they discontinued it, discontinuation being an entirely new concept to me at the time.

The bottle I have has gone off because among all of the other things I didn’t know, I had no idea about the enemies of perfume: light and heat. It still evokes such good memories though and I feel grateful that it started me down such a fragrant path.

I have a small bottle of the current EdT, and I do like it, although it’s not the HG. Way back when I was a budding perfumista, I bought a bottle and it was not what I expected it to be at all. It seemed harsh to me, probably because I expected it to be similar to one I had had before and couldn’t find again. But I’ve come around. 😉

Started the day in 28 La Pausa — six sprays from my travel atomizer and you’d never know it (it has been seven hours, but it barely lasted one). Why do I have to love something that is so fleeting?

Crazy weather here in Ireland — we got snow (actual, sticking snow) here in Galway on Thursday. That is a rarity. We also experienced our first ever Status Red weather warning on Friday night into Saturday (the levels are yellow/orange/red, with red the worst). Very glad to have been indoors. Today is just a measly Status Yellow, and it is plenty windy — I struggled as we crossed the bridge near our flat earlier this afternoon.

Getting into the shower soon. Not looking forward to tomorrow’s phone call to my union to inquire about my disability pay due to my surgery. The doctor’s office didn’t read the directions to the forms. One form didn’t go to the right place. So that was a fun phone call on Thursday to correct. The lady told me to call her Monday or Tuesday to see where it is. She gave me the heads up that they would be off Wednesday onwards due to Thanksgiving. It must be nice to be a corporate suit since they get more time off than their retail workers. But I am hoping to get my drain removed tomorrow. It might be a wise idea to insist on it. My sister who is an ER nurse said that there is no real need to keep it in for more than 10 to 14 days due to the infection risk.

Wearing Infusion d’Iris today and hoping for some good luck for tomorrow.

Hmmm, but then as soon as I say that, I think of Coco and Sycomore, Cuir de Russie, Bel Respiro. Even Chance Eau Fraiche on the right day. Still, I think BdI wins. For today.

I’m sure it’s my wonky nose. Just overly sensitive to certain things.

I’m wearing the scent that is my favorite one for the US Thanksgiving holiday, Ambre Narguilé, as I start my cooking ahead of time with a make-ahead gravy that we love. We also bought our annual Fraser fir today. I will continue to buy a fresh cut tree as long as the aging process permits me to as any purchase I can make that contributes to land remaining under cultivation rather than becoming, say, a strip mall is well worth it.

Perfect scent for making gravy! And I salute you…you’ve already got a tree! I did go out and cut some holly and winterberry for the house yesterday but that is literally all I’ve done to prepare for the holidays so far.

SOTD is Shalimar Millesime Jasmine. I thought it would be best in the summer, but the projection is quite good today along with the longevity. I have had it on for 10 hours and it is still going strong.

I’m in Vol de Nuit. It’s fairly quiet on me, so it was perfect for a cloudy day.

Commando right now and will be commando until after my appointment which is at 1. Let’s hope the drain is removed today. My skin on my abdomen is starting to not handle the medical tape so well. After my appointment, I think that Chanel no 5 edp will do.

I too hope that the drain is removed today and that the healing can continue. No. 5 is the perfect choice.

Another Monday. The perma-cloud is setting up here downwind from Lake Michigan so it’s dreary and gray again. Still.
So I want a cozy scent and chose DSH Inner Sanctum today. Dark rose is just what I need.
PSA: Dawn’s holiday sale has started, 20% off site wide with code joy20.

I love your term “perma-cloud.” I have not-very-fond memories of it…which is part of the reason I don’t live there anymore, lol!

Wearing LouLou this morning, which is the kind of thing that could be a signature scent for me if I didn’t love so many other perfumes.

Yesterday I ended up in Diptique 34 EdT. It surprised me with how long it lasted.
Today, my eye lighted upon a decant which arrived courtesy of a generous perfume fairy here. Patchouli Patch from Montale – my first,
    and patchouli.

and probably my last, patchouli. I’ve not tried another that I’ve liked as well.
