Thursday scent of the day 11/14

Posted by Robin on 14 November 2024 163 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also National Pickle Day, World Diabetes Day and Claude Monet’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking more points in Aedes de Venustas Copal Azur.

Reminder: on 11/15, wear a fragrance with tonka bean, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I like the bird picture! Alert, indeed. Makes me want to make myself a cup of coffee. 😂☕

I picked Lalique Le Parfum for the CP. Tonka is the third main note according to Fragrantica votes.

I just heard from the client whose test I initially almost passed, so they let me try again. And this time I passed. Hopefully it will bring some good new projects.

Great news Glannys. I often think of you and wonder how you’re doing, even more so now that I’m reading The Rooster House by Victoria Belim, whom people here may know as Victoria Frolova from the wonderful blog Bois de Jasmin. It’s all about returning for long visits to Ukraine, her homeland, to spend time with the family matriarch. (she was born there to Russian and Ukrainian parents). I enjoy her posts so much, including all those on culture, art, music. But the memoir is also about family, history, politics through the intimate lens of loved ones, tiny beautiful moments, the plague of war, the sundering of relatives who are lost to disinformation, generations of strong women, family secrets. Highly recommended. And Glannys, I wish with all my heart for you and everyone in Ukraine to stay safe from harm and for the harmers to trip over their own evil and disappear for good.

    Hello.
Sotd is Shalimar M Tonka. I don’t know why I didn’t buy a bub of this beauty (if I did, I can’t find it).
Made myself a mug of skinny hot chocolate (cocoa powder, skimmed milk and stevia), and because I saved calories, that meant more mini marshmallows!

I’m in an older scent, which may be discontinued: it’s Caron’s Alpona, a lovely grapefruit chypre. I have the generous sample Diane made me, cause Caron didn’t ship to Canada. It’s beautiful. I’ll be sad when it’s gone.

Have a great day, lovely NST people 🙂

Caron’s Alpona is indeed a treasure. Btw, another perfumista & I found that vintage Eau de Caron is like an EDT version of Alpona, which only comes in parfum I think. If you want to test this theory, you can sometimes find large minis of Alpona on the evilbay for very little $$. The bottle is very plain. I’m putting in a link here, not sure that’s allowed so pls delete Robin if so. I’m not affiliated in any way. This is for the U.S. Ebay site and there are a bunch of them if you scroll.

Many years ago, on my first visit to the Caron boutique in NYC, Alpona was my favorite of the urn scents and I came home with a scented tassel…it hung by my computer for some years before it got so ratty I had to throw it out.

Anyway, I wish I’d bought some but it was too spendy for me at the time.

Speaking of birds, I have a neighbor who has been coming multiple times a day to beat a tattoo on a pine by my camper. He/She is lovely and very diligent. A few steps away is another pine that has been converted into granary tree, stuffed chock-a-block full of acorns. From the views I’ve gotten of the bird, it seems most likely to be an acorn woodpecker. Interestingly, they are a communal species and live with family members in tree “condos” made by excavating not just a single nest, but many “rooms” that branch off the main entryway. While not considered a threatened species, they are in decline due to habit loss. Of course.

Here it is in action for those interested:

As for perfume, I want easy and uncomplicated so I went with SL Une Bois Vanille.

I’m avoiding news on-line which has just been made easier because the news channel now requires a subscription to view on-line. So no, I’m not paying and it will much easier to avoid it for the next four years…😅

    Happy Almost Friday!

I’m wearing “Chute de l’humanité” from Coeur Angoissé. Top notes of despair and distress, which morph effortlessly to bleakness and fear, with subtle hints of desolation. And, boy, do those heavy notes of blinding rage come through in the dry down, and they last forever! (No indication on the bottle, but I think it must be an extrait.)

      Happy Thursday, Deva!

That said, this does bring to mind about my thoughts re: Undina’s Saturday question regarding how I feel about perfume prices these days; as long as I don’t have to choose between eating well (for the foreseeable future) and buying perfume, I will always opt for the latter.

I’ve been focusing on foreign news sources. It helps to have a different perspective, or at least a foreign language to slow me down. 🙂 But I do also find it refreshing that the German Süddeutsche Zeitung (centrist) will totally call a spade a spade.

So of the eight fragrances I brought with me to Ireland (all in very small decanted spray bottles), ONE has tonka. Therefore, Memo Winter Palace it is. Or will be, once I get brave enough — Mr. Skal and I both started the week with food poisoning, and I am still skittish about strong scents and flavors.

Had my surgery yesterday. Feels like I was kicked in the stomach a few times. I have a drain in due to the gallbladder being inflamed and looks like the liver was inflamed. I don’t know why I am so worried about my liver being inflamed. I have a follow up on the 25th and hope to get the drain removed. Wore no 22 extrait on the inside of my ankle yesterday. I think that I will wear no 5 extrait today after my shower.

Copying Robin in Copal Azur today, it’s one of my favorites and I had no idea it has a tonka note!

Thanks everyone for their kind condolences yesterday. One death was an estranged uncle we hardly knew, but the other was my husband’s step father, so it has been rough.

I’m scent free, still in Porto, coming home next Wednesday. Today I pilgrimaged to Claus Porto and bought a lot of soap lol. 2 for a friend who has faithfully watered my plants for 2 months (she gets soap and a fancy chocolate bar). And several for me. The prices here are a bargain compared to the US so I indulged.
She gets lemon verbena and moss. I get moss, green leaf and lemongrass.

We’ve had a grand time! 2 months in Porto at a VRBO just off the main tourist area, so a little quieter and neighborly. We’ve explored every inch, taking weeping train trips to nearby towns, did 2 completely different river cruises, eaten so many egg tarts I’m embarrassed to even count. Souvenirs: the soap, a lovely pair of locally crafted earrings, a tile set in a cork trivet and 2 kitchen towels. I did not find a perfume that spoke to me, oh well. Next adventure will be 2 months in Bologna Italy next spring.

I have shifted to a warmer bathrobe this morning ~ a clear sign of fall in Los Angeles.
My Guiac 10 hauling friend who is in Kyoto today ~ her hotel/ryokan is next to the Kyoto le labo boutique. She is trying to get sample of the new fragrance to bring back.
Post shower something fall like ~ I think a few sprays of Silky Woods.

Signs of fall in PA…it starts when I put away my summer bathrobe and get out the spring/fall bathrobe. Then I get the summer bathrobe back out, then eventually I need the winter bathrobe too but according to the 10 day forecast it is too soon to put away the others. Luckily there are lots of hooks in my bedroom.

Not-so-patiently waiting for a sample of Jusbox Fifty Four to come in the mail. Notes are below and I will update w/ impressions later. This is a collaboration between The Perfume Guy and Jusbox. I have watched TPG’s reviews from time to time and he mentioned this new fragrance and it being vanilla-centric so I sought ought a sample. Don’t think I have tried anything from Jusbox actually before. 🤔

    TOP NOTES
    Piña Colada, Cardamom, Guatemala Davana

    HEART NOTES
Saffron, Chocolate Accord, Nagarmotha, Cinnamon Bark

    BOTTOM NOTES
Rhum, Vanilla Resin Absolute, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Tobacco

    Hi everyone!
Taking points in Montale Arabians Tonka. I’m not sure why I bought a decant of this, I have decided that I really don’t care for it. Too much aoud for my nose, and not enough tonka. I’ll switch to vintage Opium when AT dies down a bit.

CP-compliant tonight in Anatole Lebreton Caribe Kiss. Really it’s just a very straight-up piña colada scent, but in the most polite way possible, a very nice pineapple and coconut scent that’s not in-your-face about it. And tonka’s in the notes.

But my main scent all day was AL Uruk. No tonka in the notes, for once. Luca Turin was all over this one recently, and I do find that it’s very well done, but I’m not sure I need it. But I may reevaluate based on how I feel about incense. My initial take was “Absolutely a dead ringer for a European church. Not getting the nutmeg and orange up top. There’s just a hint of something metallic, too.” It does soften but while the drydown is well done it doesn’t speak to me. The incense up front, though, does speak to me.

I was off commenting on NST for a whole week and I barely survived!

My cousin’s son’s wedding was a lovely affair in the beautiful New Hope PA venue. It was frou-frou from the attire (black tie! and no I did not), to VALET PARKING only, to gathering in a holding pen before being allowed to go to the where the wedding was held. The cocktail hour was great, except it was confusing as to where all the food was; I’m not the only one confused or I would have decided that maybe it was me! The signature drinks were fabulous and named after their pets. The dinner was good and the dessert was different. I did not manage to take a picture of it but there was a donut 🍩 display that we were supposed to take one and bring it home — I just ate it there 😋. Anyway, the whole thing was great overall. We even managed to spend time at nearby Peddler’s Village. The hotel we stayed at could have been better … without the dog we would have stayed elsewhere.

And since this post had turned out to be longer than intended, here’s my post on getting something for “free” at Starbucks today:

The closest mall to me is about 25 minutes away or so, depending on traffic. Some shopping centers are closer, but they aren’t the big, enclosed spaces I think of when someone says “shopping mall”.
