Crisp, clean

For most of the US, autumn is also characterized by lower temperatures and less humidity. “Cooler air holds fewer molecules, meaning fewer things are floating around for our noses to detect—the air is less ‘cluttered’ than during warmer, more humid seasons,” Dr. Crimmins says. This all accounts for the “crisp, clean” feeling and aroma we attribute to fall air, she adds. But while nature plays a role, it’s not necessarily the odor of decaying leaves or lower humidity that we enjoy and remember so vividly—it’s all the sensations that come with those changes.

The daily lemming

Campbell's "The Scents of Sides Season" limited edition candle collection goes on sale November 18 here and will probably sell out pretty quickly. The fragrances: Green Bean Casserole ("Top notes of cream and celery blend into fried onion and mushroom, with a base of buttery green beans"), Jalapeño Cheddar Mac & Cheese ("The spiced aroma of warm, gooey cheese baked to perfection with a hint of jalapeño adding a kick to the scent of melty cheddar"), Apple, Fennel & Herb Stuffing ("The smell of savory fennel, thyme and rosemary in this stuffing-inspired candle will instantly transport you to Thanksgiving dinner") and Everything Bagel-Seasoned Mashed Potatoes (What? Is this a thing?? "A creamy, buttery scent complemented by notes of garlic that brings the cozy, savory aroma of mashed potatoes to your home"). $30.

Remarkable resilience

Despite China’s economic slowdown and softening luxury demand, the country’s niche fragrance market is showing remarkable resilience. International brands are flocking to secure a foothold in the mainland.

On the heels of Frédéric Malle’s recent Shanghai flagship store renovation, Swiss fragrance giant Givaudan opened its Fine Fragrance Creative Centre, “L'Appartement 125,” in downtown Shanghai on October 28.
